Summary

A medical resume is a one to two page document naming what you are credentialed to do, who issued that credential and the date it expires. Medical hiring runs through a verification step before an offer, so this guide shows you how to write a credential and clearance packet a verifier can clear in minutes, with three adaptable summaries and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and openings for healthcare occupations.

Medical resume examples by experience level

In short, a medical resume is a one to two page document that names what you are credentialed to do, who issued that credential, and the date it expires.

However, that third item is the one applicants leave off, and it quietly decides files. That is because medical employers hand your resume to someone whose job is verification, and that person works a checklist: is the license or registry entry real, is it current, is the national certification active, is the life support card in date, has screening cleared. As a result, a file that answers those questions on the page moves in a day. A file that leaves them open waits while someone emails you for numbers.

In general, the Bureau of Labor Statistics groups this work into two bands. Healthcare practitioners and technical occupations had a median annual wage of $86,530 in May 2025, healthcare support occupations $38,340, against $50,980 for all occupations, and about 1.9 million openings are projected each year on average across healthcare occupations (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, Healthcare Occupations, last modified 27 August 2026).

Specifically, the worked examples here use the clinical support side, where most people enter the sector and where the credential packet does the most work.

Resume guide for a medical resume

To that end, this guide and the corresponding medical resume example will cover:

  • To begin with, how to write a medical resume, section by section
  • Then, why a credential and clearance packet belongs on the page, and what goes in it
  • Also, three adaptable summaries: entry-level, certified practitioner and clinical lead
  • How to write an expiry date so it reads as current rather than as a risk
  • What healthcare pays, and how much of that is decided by the credential you hold

How to write a medical resume

Overall, six blocks: contact header, summary, credentials and clearances, clinical experience, skills, and education. Generally, one page for your first five years, two once you carry a lead line or a preceptor record.

The order is the argument. Credentials sit above experience because they are a gate rather than an achievement: an applicant who cannot be verified cannot be scheduled, and the reader would rather learn that in line five than on the start date.

BlockWhat it is answeringWhere it goes
Credentials and clearancesCan this person be verified and cleared before my start date?Directly under the summary
Clinical experienceWhat did they do, on what volume, and for whom?Reverse chronological, with a count in the header line
SkillsWhich of my systems and procedures do they already know?Grouped block, not a list of adjectives
EducationDid they complete an approved program, and when?Short, dated, at the foot
Expert Tip

Write the expiry date, not the year you certified

Nearly every medical credential is a dated object with a life span: a state license renews on a cycle, a national certification recertifies every two or three years, an American Heart Association course card runs for two years from the month of issue.

A resume that says "BLS certified" tells a verifier nothing, because the question is never whether you once took the course. Write "BLS Provider, American Heart Association, expires March 2027" and the question is answered in the line it was asked.

The same rule covers the credential you are still finishing: "examination scheduled 14 November 2026" is a fact a manager staffing a January vacancy can plan around.

Run the finished file through the free ATS resume checker before you submit. Health systems parse applications into a structured record before a human opens them, and credential fields are among them.

Choosing the best resume format for a medical resume

Reverse chronological, single column, plain type. One page while your history fits on one, two once you hold a lead role or a preceptor record.

Functional formats fail here because the reader is checking continuity and verifiability, and both live in the timeline. Moreover, per diem and agency work are normal and deserve a label rather than a disguise: "per diem, 2 to 3 shifts a week, same unit, 19 months" is a stable record, while the same months written as an unexplained short job are a departure.

Four lines, and the third does the work: a registry or license number in the header lets a verifier check you before anyone calls. Write the credential exactly as the issuing body writes it, because that is the string a verification system searches on.

Make use of a summary

In effect, four lines: what you are credentialed as, the setting and volume you have worked, one measured result, and the state of your clearances.

Entry-level medical adaptable resume summary example

Certified nursing assistant on the New Mexico Nurse Aide Registry, with 14 months on a 28-bed medical unit carrying an assignment of 9 to 11 patients a shift. Completed 1,340 documented patient care hours and a phlebotomy certificate alongside the role, with 214 successful draws logged during training. BLS Provider card current through March 2027, immunization and annual tuberculosis screening complete, and background check and drug screen cleared in 2025.

Certified medical practitioner adaptable resume summary example

Certified Clinical Medical Assistant with four years in a six-provider family practice, rooming 32 to 38 patients a day and running the vaccine, injection and point-of-care testing workflow. Rebuilt the pre-visit chart review so outstanding orders were resolved before the appointment, which cut provider chart-closing time by roughly 20 minutes a session across the practice. Hold CCMA and CPT certifications through the National Healthcareer Association, both recertified in 2025, with BLS and PALS cards current through 2027.

Clinical lead adaptable resume summary example

Clinical team lead for 11 medical assistants and 2 patient care technicians across a three-site family practice group, responsible for scheduling, competency sign-off and the team credential file. Took the group from 7 lapsed credentials at the 2024 audit to zero at the 2026 audit by moving every expiry date onto a 90-day tracking calendar. Certified Clinical Medical Assistant since 2022, certified phlebotomy technician, and a preceptor for the local community college medical assistant program.

Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, Petroglyph Family Health, Albuquerque, NM, July 2023 to Present

Six-provider family practice, roughly 180 visits a day across three sites, Epic and Athenahealth.

Room 32 to 38 patients a day, covering vitals, medication reconciliation, standing-order screening and pre-visit chart review for two providers.

Run the vaccine and injection workflow, including cold chain logging, state immunization registry entry and roughly 45 phlebotomy draws a week at a 3 percent redraw rate.

Rebuilt pre-visit chart review so outstanding orders were resolved before the appointment; provider chart-closing time fell by roughly 20 minutes a session.

Precept students from the Central New Mexico Community College medical assistant program, 7 through the 6-week checklist so far.

Build the credential and clearance packet, with every expiry date on it

This is the block almost nobody writes, even though it decides how fast your file moves.

Every clinical hire passes verification before a start date is set. Somebody confirms the credential exists, belongs to you and is current on your start date, then closes a separate file of clearances. Both steps are slow, and both can be pre-answered on one page. Six things belong in the block.

The state credential, with its number and issuing state. Licensure and registration are state matters, and the number turns verification into a lookup. Registered nurses need a state license issued after an approved program and a qualifying exam, and nursing assistants typically complete a state-approved program and pass their state's competency exam, after which they are placed on a state registry (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, last modified 27 August 2026). Name the state, because a credential is not portable by default.

National certification and life support cards

The national certification, written the way its issuing body writes it. Full name, acronym, awarding body, certification number, recertification date. "CCMA" alone is ambiguous; "Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), National Healthcareer Association" is not.

Life support cards with their expiry month. BLS, and where the role needs them ACLS and PALS, are dated cards rather than permanent qualifications. The month of expiry is the whole fact.

The health record. Immunization status and annual tuberculosis screening are conditions of employment in most clinical settings and take weeks to assemble from nothing. One line removes that delay.

Background check and drug screen. Say when the last one cleared and who ran it. It tells a reader there is nothing to find.

What you are working on next. A booked examination date is a fact. Use it.

Adaptable resume credential and clearance packet example

State credential: New Mexico Nurse Aide Registry, #NM-CNA-208471, active through August 2027.

National certification: Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), National Healthcareer Association, #CCMA-4419682, certified June 2023, recertified June 2025.

Additional certification: Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT), National Healthcareer Association, #CPT-3318804, recertified 2024.

Life support: BLS Provider, American Heart Association, expires March 2027. PALS, American Heart Association, expires April 2027.

Health record: immunization record complete, annual tuberculosis screening April 2026, influenza vaccination current for the season.

Screening: background check and 10-panel drug screen cleared July 2025 through the employer's vendor.

In progress: Certified Medical Administrative Assistant examination scheduled 14 November 2026.

With seven lines, therefore, a credentialing office can clear you without an email.

Medical credentials that lapse or expire

One caution, and it is the one that costs people jobs. Never leave a credential whose date has passed on the page without saying so. After all, an expired card is not read as an oversight in a field where it means you cannot be assigned to patients on Monday. Write "lapsed, renewal course booked 3 October 2026" instead. In other words, a date in the future reads as a plan; a date in the past with nothing beside it reads as a file the reader has to stop and investigate.

Set the block as plain lines or a simple table, because a certification number inside a graphic or a sidebar is invisible to the field mapping a portal runs. Also, do not attach photographs of your license or immunization record to a job board: the number and the expiry date belong on the resume, the document itself in the employer's onboarding portal once there is an offer.

Build a snapshot of your key medical skills

Then list twelve to sixteen entries in four groups: clinical procedures, patient care, documentation and systems, and compliance. Group by what the work is, because a reader is scanning for whether you already do their job.

Adaptable resume skills example

Clinical procedures: Venipuncture and capillary collection, Vital signs and point-of-care testing, Intramuscular and subcutaneous injection, Vaccine administration and cold chain logging, EKG acquisition

Patient care: Rooming and intake, Medication reconciliation, Ambulation and transfer with gait belt, Patient education to teach-back

Documentation and systems: Epic, Athenahealth, State immunization registry entry, Order entry and result routing

Compliance: HIPAA privacy practice, Infection prevention and standard precautions, Sharps and biohazard handling, Two-patient-identifier verification

List your education and certifications

Short, dated, with the expiry visible. Indeed, a credential written without a date reads as expired, because that is how the employer's own system would record it.

Adaptable resume education and certifications example

Associate of Applied Science, Health Sciences, Central New Mexico Community College, Albuquerque, NM, 2026.

Medical Assistant Certificate, Central New Mexico Community College, Albuquerque, NM, 2023. 720 program hours including a 160-hour clinical externship.

Nurse Aide Training Program, Central New Mexico Community College, 2021. New Mexico competency examination passed August 2021.

Certifications: Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), National Healthcareer Association, #CCMA-4419682, recertified 2025. Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT), National Healthcareer Association, #CPT-3318804, recertified 2024. BLS Provider, American Heart Association, expires March 2027. PALS, American Heart Association, expires April 2027.

Education matters here mainly as evidence that you completed an approved program, since that is what the credential was issued against. Medical assistants typically enter with a postsecondary nondegree award, and most states do not mandate certification although employers may prefer or require it (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, last modified 27 August 2026). That is the reason to certify anyway: the requirement is the employer's, and it is applied at the shortlist.

Choose the right layout and design

Above all, single column, 11 or 12 point, no photograph, no graphics, no skill bars. Plain tables parse, so the credential packet set as a short table is fine; a two-column template with certifications in a sidebar is where portal parsing loses the lines you most need read. Send PDF unless told otherwise.

Do

Put the registry or license number and its issuing state in the header. Give an expiry month for every card and certification. State that immunization and tuberculosis screening are complete. Say when screening last cleared. Put a patient, bed or visit count in every job header. Give a booked date for any examination you have not yet sat.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not write "certified" without naming the issuing body. Do not list a credential with a date in the past and nothing beside it. Do not attach images of your license or health records to a job board. Do not describe a patient in a way that could identify them.

Medical job market and outlook

Healthcare employment is projected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations from 2025 to 2035, with about 1.9 million openings projected each year on average (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, Healthcare Occupations, last modified 27 August 2026). Within that, however, the credential you hold decides which market you are in:

OccupationTypical entry-level educationMedian annual wage, May 2025Projected change, 2025-35Projected annual openings
Registered nursesBachelor's or associate degree, plus a state license$97,5506%~180,800
Medical assistantsPostsecondary nondegree award$45,69013%~109,700
Nursing assistantsState-approved program and state competency exam$42,2603%~203,300

Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025 wage data and 2025 to 2035 projections, published 27 August 2026.

Three published occupations, three markets. Nursing assistants are large with modest growth and heavy replacement demand, 1,558,700 jobs in 2025 and about 203,300 openings a year; medical assistants grow fastest at 13 percent from 833,900 jobs; registered nurses are largest at 3,465,400 jobs (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025 to 2035 projections).

Statistical insight

The gap between the two halves of healthcare is a credential gap

Healthcare practitioners and technical occupations had a median annual wage of $86,530 in May 2025. Healthcare support occupations had a median of $38,340 in the same month, below the $50,980 median for all occupations (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, Healthcare Occupations, last modified 27 August 2026).

That is a gap of more than two to one inside one sector, and what separates the bands is not effort, hours or how close you work to patients. It is which credential you hold and what scope it grants.

So the credential lines are not trivia at the foot of the page; they are the largest single predictor of what a role pays. Put them where they will be read, and keep the next one visibly in progress, because the route between the bands runs through an examination date.

What salary you can expect in a medical role

Specifically, healthcare practitioners and technical occupations had a median annual wage of $86,530 as of May 2025, and healthcare support occupations $38,340, against $50,980 for all occupations (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 27 August 2026).

Inside each occupation the spread is narrower than people expect, which tells you where to spend effort. Meanwhile, nursing assistants earned between $33,940 at the 10th percentile and $51,980 at the 90th in May 2025, medical assistants between $36,050 and $59,310, and registered nurses between $68,940 and $137,470 (BLS, May 2025). The bottom to the top of the nursing assistant range is about $18,000; the nursing assistant median to the registered nurse median is more than $55,000.

What a resume can move is narrower but real. Differentials are allocated against documentation: night and weekend premiums, charge or lead pay, preceptor pay, unit-specific competencies. Each is awarded to a file that proves eligibility on the day the offer is written rather than a year later.

Key takeaways for a medical resume

  1. Firstly, lead with the credential, its number and its issuing state, because verification is the slow step.
  2. Also write an expiry month for every card and certification, not the year you first certified.
  3. Say that immunization and annual tuberculosis screening are complete, and when screening cleared.
  4. In addition, put a patient, bed or visit count in the header line of every job.
  5. Never leave a lapsed credential on the page without a booked renewal date beside it.
  6. Similarly, keep the packet as parseable text, and keep images of licenses and health records off job boards.
  7. Finally, treat the next credential as part of the resume; a booked examination date is a plannable fact.

Medical resume questions, answered

How long should a medical resume be?

One page while your history fits on one, two once you hold a lead role, a preceptor record or several active certifications. The credential packet is the block worth spending lines on, because each line removes a question someone would otherwise ask you by email.

Where should certifications go on a medical resume?

Directly under the summary. They are a gate rather than an achievement, and the reader checks them first. Keep the full education history at the foot, since the program that led to the credential matters less than the credential itself once you are certified.

What do I put on a medical resume with no clinical experience?

Program hours and the clinical externship, written as a job: the setting, the length, the supervised hours, the procedures you were signed off on and the counts you logged. Then the credential with its number, any booked examination date, and the clearance lines. Medical assistants typically enter with a postsecondary nondegree award and nursing assistants with a state-approved program and a competency exam (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, last modified 27 August 2026), so a completed program with documented hours is a real qualification.

Should I list a certification that has expired?

Only with a renewal date beside it. An expired card with nothing attached reads as a candidate who cannot be assigned to patients on the start date, and that is enough to stop a file. "Lapsed, renewal course booked 3 October 2026" is a different sentence, and honest in a field where the employer verifies anyway.

Is it worth certifying if my state does not require it?

Usually yes. Most states do not mandate medical assistant certification, but employers may prefer or require it (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, last modified 27 August 2026). The requirement is set by the person hiring rather than by statute, so it is applied at the shortlist.

How do I write clinical experience without breaching patient privacy?

Describe the work and the group, never a person. Volumes, bed counts, assignment ratios and procedure counts are safe and more useful than an anecdote. A bullet saying "carried an assignment of 9 to 11 patients on a 28-bed medical unit" tells a manager what your shift looked like; a story about one memorable patient tells them you will discuss patients with strangers.
