In short, a physician assistant resume is a one to two page clinical document that names your PA-C certification, your state license, the specialty you are working in now, and the procedures you perform without a physician in the room.
However, the PA license does not say any of that. It is deliberately generalist: one credential, one examination, one scope defined by your education, training and experience rather than by an organ system. Indeed, that generality is the profession's greatest asset and your resume's biggest problem, because the medical director reading your file is filling a specific seat on a specific service, and needs to know whether you can take it in six weeks or six months.

- How to write a physician assistant resume, section by section
- Why the specialty block matters more than the license line
- Three adaptable summaries: new graduate, practicing PA and lead advanced practice provider
- How to write your practice agreement, prescriptive authority and DEA registration

How to write a physician assistant resume
First, use seven blocks: contact header, summary, certification and licensure, clinical experience, procedures and privileges, education, and skills. Generally, one page for your first three years, two once you have a procedure log and a service line to point at.
Certification and licensure sit above experience because they are gates. A credentialing office cannot begin a file that does not say who certified you, which state licensed you, and whether your registration to prescribe is active.
BlockThe question it answersWhere it goes
- Certification and licensureIs this person board certified, licensed and able to prescribe?Directly under the summary
- Specialty and settingWhich service can they join without a training runway? Its own block, named, not implied
- ProceduresWhat will they be privileged for on day one?A named list with volumes
- Clinical experienceWhat did they carry, and how much of it?Reverse chronological, with patient volumes
Specialty mobility is the norm, so your resume has to state where you are now
NCCPA's 2025 Statistical Profile of Board Certified PAs reports that 52.7 percent of clinically practicing PAs have changed specialties at least once during their career, and that 201,038 PAs held board certification at the end of 2025 (NCCPA, 2025 Statistical Profile of Board Certified PAs).
That figure explains why a PA resume behaves differently from a physician resume. No residency is stamped on the credential, and more than half the profession has moved at least once, so the reader assumes nothing and reads for evidence instead.
Write the specialty as a fact with a duration attached: "Emergency medicine, four years, Level II trauma center, 2.1 patients per hour." Not "experience in a variety of clinical settings."
Run the finished file through the ATS resume checker before you submit. Hospital systems parse applications into a credentialing record before a human opens them, and a two-column PDF is where that parsing fails.
Choosing the best resume format for a physician assistant resume
Reverse chronological, single column. Similarly, keep to one page as a new graduate, two once you have a second specialty, a procedure log worth publishing, or supervisory responsibility for other advanced practice providers.
Functional formats fail badly here. Medical staff services read a PA file for continuity: which service, which dates, which state, whether there is a gap. A format that hides the timeline creates work for the person deciding whether your file goes to a credentials committee, and work is what gets a file set aside.
Include your contact information
Therefore, put the credential after your name, and the numbers on the page. NCCPA and every state board run public verification, so the file that lets an analyst confirm you in ninety seconds moves before the one that makes them email you first.
Make use of a summary
Specifically, write four lines: certification and specialty, years and setting, one volume or acuity figure, and the thing about your scope a reader could not guess.

Right vs wrong: the same physician assistant summary, twice
The left column can be credentialed and scheduled. On the other hand, the right could describe any of the 201,038 board certified PAs counted at the end of 2025, and a medical director who has read forty files this month is looking for the difference.
Outline your clinical experience
Employer, service, city, dates, then the shape of the job: patient volume, acuity, panel size, case mix, call. In addition, write three to five bullets, each carrying a number.

Adaptable resume employment history example
Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant, Treasure Valley Regional Medical Center, Boise, ID, March 2021 to Present
Carry 2.1 patients per hour in a 38-bed Level II trauma center, roughly 3,900 encounters a year across a mixed acuity department.
Perform laceration repair, fracture reduction and splinting, incision and drainage, lumbar puncture, procedural sedation support and ultrasound-guided peripheral access without a physician at the bedside.
Work under a written collaborative practice agreement with the department chair that names independent disposition authority for ESI levels 3 to 5 and a consultation trigger for chest pain with abnormal troponin.
Precept PA students on emergency medicine rotation, 14 since 2022, and wrote the department's procedural sedation checklist now used on every shift.
Reduced fast-track door-to-provider time from 41 minutes to 24 by restructuring the first-hour rooming order with the charge nurse.
Name the specialty you can step into, and the agreement you practiced under
Above all, this is the section that decides a PA file, and almost nobody writes it. Everything else on your resume also appears on the resume of a PA in a different specialty. This block tells a medical director whether hiring you means a six-week onboarding or a nine-month one. Specifically, it has five parts, each answering a different question.
What the license says, and what it does not. NCCPA issues one certification: PAs who pass the examination "are issued NCCPA certification and can use the PA-C designation until the certification expiration date," and eligibility for the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination requires graduation "from a PA program accredited by ARC-PA," the agency that "defines the standards for PA education" and evaluates programs against them (NCCPA; ARC-PA). In fact, nowhere in that chain does a specialty appear. That is by design, and it is why you can move from family medicine to emergency medicine without sitting another board examination. It is also why your resume must carry what the credential does not.
Physician assistant specialty and CAQs
The specialty, with a duration and a volume. NCCPA's 2025 Statistical Profile records the largest practice areas among clinically practicing PAs as surgical subspecialties at 18.3 percent, family medicine and general practice at 15.9 percent and emergency medicine at 10.4 percent, with 21.4 percent in a primary care specialty in 2025 (NCCPA, 2025 Statistical Profile of Board Certified PAs). Therefore, say which of those you are in, for how long, and at what volume. If you have moved, say where you came from and treat it as range rather than a gap.
The Certificate of Added Qualifications, if you hold one. For example, NCCPA publishes CAQs in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, Hospital Medicine, Nephrology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Occupational Medicine, Orthopaedic Surgery, Palliative Medicine and Hospice Care, Pediatrics and Psychiatry. Each requires "(1) current PA-C certification and (2) possession of a valid, unrestricted license to practice as a PA in at least one jurisdiction in the United States or its territories," plus at least 75 Category I CME credits in the specialty over six years with 25 in the last two, specialty practice hours, an attestation of procedures and cases from a physician or senior PA, and a 120-question examination (NCCPA). It is valid ten years, and it belongs in the header, because it is the only line on a PA resume that is specialty-specific by design.
Your PA practice agreement
The practice agreement you worked under. This is the part that reads as inside knowledge, and the part that lets a director price the job. AAPA's Optimal Team Practice policy, adopted by its House of Delegates in May 2017, asks states to allow "PAs to practice to the full extent of their education, training and experience absent a mandated relationship to a specific healthcare provider" and to make PAs "eligible for direct payment by all public and private insurers" (AAPA). For instance, AAPA states that ten states have eliminated the legal requirement for a specific PA-physician relationship: Delaware, Iowa, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, Virginia and Wyoming (AAPA, PA Practice Modernization).
However, most states are not on that list, and what you write depends on which side of it you practiced on. The Idaho State Board of Medicine publishes that "a written collaborative practice agreement is required for most PAs and graduate PAs," with an exception for those employed by facilities whose credentialing bylaws govern scope instead, and that the agreement must name the parties, "the authorized scope of practice for each licensed physician assistant," a requirement to collaborate, consult or refer as indicated by the patient's condition and your own experience, and any monitoring parameters (Idaho State Board of Medicine). Consequently, one sentence naming what your agreement authorized beats a paragraph about teamwork.
Prescribing rights and recertification
Prescriptive authority and DEA registration. Write these as two facts, because they are two. In other words, state licensure grants prescriptive authority; federal registration grants the ability to prescribe controlled substances. DEA defines a mid-level practitioner as "an individual practitioner, other than a physician, dentist, veterinarian, or podiatrist, who is licensed, registered, or otherwise permitted by the United States or the jurisdiction in which he/she practices, to dispense a controlled substance in the course of professional practice" (U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Diversion Control Division).
AAPA's prescribing issue brief, dated April 2019, states that in 44 states and the District of Columbia PAs were authorized to prescribe in schedules II to V, that five states allowed schedules III to V, and that Kentucky was the only state where PAs could not prescribe controlled medications (AAPA, April 2019). Name your state, name the schedules, and say whether your registration is active, pending or institutional.
Adaptable resume specialty and authority block example
Specialty: Emergency medicine, five years. Previously family medicine, four years. Both in Idaho.
Certification: PA-C, NCCPA #PA-1147302, certified 2018, maintenance cycle through 2028. Master of Physician Assistant Studies, ARC-PA accredited program.
Licensure: Idaho Board of Medicine #PA-8842, active, no restrictions. Written collaborative practice agreement with the emergency department chair naming independent disposition authority for ESI 3 to 5.
Prescribing: Schedules II to V under Idaho licensure. DEA registration active as a mid-level practitioner.
Immediately credentialable in: emergency medicine, urgent care, family medicine.
That last line is what gets calls back. As a result, it converts a resume into an answer to the reader's only real question.
Build a snapshot of your key skills
Twelve to sixteen entries in four groups: procedures, clinical management, systems, and the regulatory work PAs actually do.
Adaptable resume skills example
Procedures: Laceration repair and complex closure, Fracture reduction and splinting, Incision and drainage, Lumbar puncture, Procedural sedation support, Ultrasound-guided peripheral access
Clinical management: Undifferentiated chest pain workup, Sepsis bundle initiation, Airway assessment, Pediatric fever pathways, Acute behavioral health disposition
Systems: Epic and Cerner order sets, Point-of-care ultrasound, Prescription monitoring program queries, Clinical documentation integrity, Advanced practice charge capture
Practice and regulatory: Collaborative practice agreement drafting, Credentialing and privileging files, CME planning against the NCCPA cycle, PA student precepting
List your education, license and certifications
Certification first with its number, then state license with number and status, then degree with the accreditation named, then everything else with a date.
Adaptable resume education and certification example
PA-C, National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants, #PA-1147302, certified 2018. Ten-year maintenance cycle through 2028; 100 CME credits logged per two-year cycle, 50 or more Category 1.
Certificate of Added Qualifications, Orthopaedic Surgery, NCCPA, 2024, valid ten years.
Licensed Physician Assistant, Idaho Board of Medicine, #PA-8842, active. DEA registration active, schedules II to V.
Master of Physician Assistant Studies, Idaho State University, Pocatello, ID, 2018. ARC-PA accredited; 2,140 supervised clinical hours across nine rotations.
Bachelor of Science, Biology, Boise State University, Boise, ID, 2015.
Certifications: ACLS, PALS and BLS, American Heart Association, current. ATLS, 2023.
Likewise, say where you are in the maintenance cycle. For example, NCCPA runs a ten-year process containing five two-year cycles, in each of which a certified PA must "earn and log at least 100 CME credits," including "at least 50 Category 1 CME credits" (NCCPA). Meanwhile, the recertifying examination comes two ways: PANRE in years nine and ten, or the longitudinal PANRE-LA, applied for in year six and "administered over 12 quarters in years 7-9 of your certification maintenance cycle," 25 questions a quarter, scored on your best eight (NCCPA). As a result, a line reading "PANRE-LA, quarters complete through 2027" marks you as a PA who manages their own credential.
Choose the right layout and design
In short, use a single column, 11 or 12 point, no photograph, no skills bars. After all, hospital applicant systems and credentialing platforms parse this into a structured provider record, and graphics are where the parse breaks.
Do
- Put PA-C after your name and the NCCPA and state license numbers in the header.
- Name the specialty with a duration and a volume figure.
- List procedures you perform unassisted separately from those you have assisted on.
- Say what your practice agreement authorized.
- State prescriptive schedules and DEA status.
- Name the specialties you could be credentialed into immediately.
Don’t
- Do not write "experience in multiple specialties" when the list is the point.
- Do not claim a procedure you have done twice; privileging asks for numbers.
- Do not write "under a supervising physician" if your state does not use that language, since it says you have not read your own practice act.
- Do not hide a specialty change.
- Do not use a two-column template for a hospital portal.
Physician assistant job market and outlook
Overall, it is one of the fastest-growing occupations in American healthcare, with heavy demand and a master's-level entry bar.
| Measure | Value |
|---|---|
| Physician assistant jobs, 2025 | 168,900 |
| Projected change, 2025-35 | 21% (much faster than average) |
| Projected annual openings | About 11,500 |
| Typical entry-level education | Master's degree |
| Median annual wage, May 2025 | $135,880, or $65.33 per hour |
The specialty you name changes the number you are offered
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that 53 percent of physician assistants worked in offices of physicians as of May 2025, at a median of $132,000, while 9 percent worked in outpatient care centers at $153,500 (BLS, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).
The distance between the largest setting and the best-paid one is $21,500 a year, and it is not a seniority gap. It is a setting gap, and you cross it by being credentialable in the setting that pays it.
A resume that says "physician assistant, seven years" competes in the $132,000 band by default. One that says "emergency medicine, five years, Level II trauma center, 2.1 patients per hour, independent disposition authority for ESI 3 to 5" competes somewhere else entirely, on the same license.
Where the jobs sit:
| Setting | Share of employment | Median annual wage (May 2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Offices of physicians | ||
| Hospitals, state, local and private | ||
| Outpatient care centers | ||
| Government | ||
| Educational services |
What salary you can expect as a physician assistant
Furthermore, the median annual wage for physician assistants was $135,880, or $65.33 an hour, as of May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent under $99,380 and the highest 10 percent above $190,280 (BLS, May 2025).
That is a spread of roughly $91,000 between the tenth and ninetieth percentiles, unusually wide for a single license, and three things explain most of it. Setting, shown in the table above. Specialty and procedural depth, because a service that bills your first-assist time prices you differently from a clinic billing your visits at a percentage. And shift structure, since nights, weekends and call carry differentials negotiated against documented experience rather than willingness.
BLS projects physician assistant employment to grow 21 percent from 2025 to 2035, much faster than average, with about 11,500 openings a year over the decade (BLS, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections). Consequently, in a market moving at that rate the constraint on your offer is rarely demand. It is how fast a credentialing committee can say yes, and that is decided by how completely your file answers their questions the first time.
Key takeaways for a physician assistant resume
- Put PA-C, the NCCPA number and the state license number in the header, so verification starts immediately.
- Above all, name your current specialty with a duration and a volume figure; the license will not do it for you.
- Likewise, separate procedures you perform unassisted from those you have assisted on, with counts.
- Describe your practice agreement and what it authorized, in your state's own language.
- Similarly, state prescriptive schedules and DEA registration as two separate facts.
- Finally, treat a specialty change as range; 52.7 percent of practicing PAs have made one.
- Name the specialties you could be credentialed into immediately.

Physician assistant resume questions, answered
How long should a physician assistant resume be?
One page for your first three years. Two once you have a procedure log worth publishing, a second specialty, or responsibility for other advanced practice providers. Credentialing files run long; the resume that opens them should not.
Should I list my rotations as a new graduate?
Yes, as a block, with the specialty, the site type and the hours, plus total supervised clinical hours and procedure counts from the clinical year. A new graduate who can say "61 suturing repairs, 34 incision and drainage, 22 ultrasound-guided lines" has given a director something to privilege against. List every active state license separately too.
Is a Certificate of Added Qualifications worth listing?
Yes, near the top. NCCPA offers CAQs in eleven specialties, each requiring current PA-C certification, an unrestricted license, at least 75 Category I CME credits in the specialty over six years, specialty practice hours, an attestation of procedures and cases, and a 120-question examination (NCCPA). It is the only specialty-specific credential in the profession, so burying it wastes it.
How do I write a resume when I am changing specialty?
Lead with transferable volume, not intention. Name the procedures and clinical problems that carry across, say what you have done to prepare in the new area, and give the number of shifts, cases or CME hours behind it. NCCPA reports 52.7 percent of clinically practicing PAs have changed specialty at least once, so the move itself is unremarkable; the evidence that you have started is what a director reads for.
What should I write about my supervising physician?
Describe the agreement, not the person. Name what it authorized you to do independently, what triggered a consultation, and whether it was a written collaborative practice agreement, a facility credentialing arrangement, or practice without a mandated relationship in a state that has removed one. That sentence tells a reader how much oversight your next job has to build around you.
