Summary

A personal banker resume is a one to two page document about a branch desk: how many households you serve, which deposit and lending products you open yourself, how the needs conversation gets documented, and what happens to the business that leaves your desk. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the two registration questions, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay for the occupations that cover the work.

Personal Banker resume examples by experience level

A personal banker resume is a one to two page document about a specific seat: the desk in a branch lobby where a household arrives with a paycheck, a small inheritance, a car they want to buy or a bill they cannot cover, and leaves with an account, a loan, an appointment with someone else, or nothing.

In practice, everything a hiring manager wants to know is about that seat. How many households sit on your list, which products you can open without asking anyone, what you ask people and where the answers are written down, and what you do with the business you are not allowed to close yourself, which in a branch is most of the money.

The wider argument about what the word "banker" covers is a separate one, and our banker resume example handles it. This page takes the narrow job: the consumer desk, the named product set, the referral duty.

Resume guide for a personal banker resume

To start, this guide and the corresponding personal banker resume example will cover:

  • First, how to write a personal banker resume, section by section
  • Then, the named product list that belongs on the page, and the one that does not
  • Also, three adaptable summaries: new banker, personal banker and licensed banker
  • How to write the needs conversation so it reads as a process rather than a personality
  • Finally, what the market pays, bracketed across the published occupations that cover branch work

How to write a personal banker resume

Overall, use six blocks: contact header, summary, the product and referral block, experience, skills and systems, education and registrations. In general, one page for the first three years, two once you carry a licensed product set and a referral pipeline with funded volume behind it.

In particular, the product and referral block sits under the summary, because it answers the branch manager's first question: on day one, which of my customers can this person finish with, and which do they hand off?

Product and referral blockWhat can they open alone, and what leaves the desk?Directly under the summary

Expert Tip

Count households, not customers

Branches measure the desk in households, because a household is the unit the bank prices: one relationship, several people, several accounts. "Customers served" is a number nobody can size; "serve 540 assigned households across two branches" places you immediately.

Then give the second number, which is movement: how many you added, how many you kept through a rate cycle, and how many products the average household holds now against when you took the list. A desk that grew from 3.1 products per household to 4.4 describes a year of work that no adjective covers.

If your bank does not use the word household, use whatever it counts: relationships, assigned book, portfolio, primary customers. The shape of the number matters, not the vocabulary.

Run the finished file through the ATS resume checker before you send it. Bank recruiting systems read the file into structured fields before a person opens it, and two column templates are where that reliably breaks.

Choosing the best resume format for a personal banker resume

Reverse chronological, one to two pages. Every bank hire ends in a background check, a credit check and a verification of dates and titles, so a resume that blurs the timeline creates work for a recruiter and questions for a compliance reviewer.

A functional format is a particularly bad fit here, because what is being bought is continuity at a desk. How long you held a list, and what happened to it while you held it, is the whole argument, and a format that hides the dates hides it.

Three lines and the reader knows the segment, the scale and whether you can take a mortgage application. A branch manager has placed you before reaching the summary, which is the point.

Make use of a summary

Next, write four lines: the desk and its size, the product set you open yourself, one number about growth or conversion, and what you refer out.

Personal banker serving 540 assigned households across two branches, with products per household up from 3.1 to 4.4 over two years. Opened 412 deposit accounts and closed 96 consumer loans and credit cards in the last 12 months, and documented a financial needs review for 83 percent of assigned households against a branch standard of 60 percent. Sent 74 mortgage referrals, 29 of which funded for $8.1 million, and 52 investment referrals that produced 17 opened accounts.

Licensed personal banker adaptable resume summary example

Licensed personal banker serving 620 households, holding the Securities Industry Essentials, Series 6 and Series 63, so annuity and mutual fund conversations end at my desk rather than leaving it. Opened 388 deposit accounts and 141 consumer loans and credit cards last year, and placed 34 small business operating relationships. Mentor five bankers across three branches on needs discovery and documentation, and run the onboarding call program for households in their first 90 days.

Right vs wrong: the same personal banker summary, twice

Personal Banker, Consumer Deposits and Lending, Tulare Street Community Bank, Fresno, CA, April 2021 to Present

Serve 540 assigned consumer households across two branches, with products per household up from 3.1 to 4.4 over two years and 61 households added from the branch's new-mover list.

Open the full consumer deposit set at the desk: checking, savings, money market, certificates and health savings accounts, 412 accounts in the last 12 months.

Close consumer credit at the desk within a $20,000 unsecured authority: 96 personal loans, auto loans and credit cards last year, including 27 auto loans for $611,000.

Document a financial needs review for 83 percent of assigned households against a branch standard of 60 percent, working from the branch appointment calendar rather than walk-in traffic.

Sent 74 residential mortgage referrals to the lending team, 29 of which funded for $8.1 million, and 52 investment referrals that produced 24 kept appointments and 17 opened accounts.

The needs conversation, and the record it has to leave behind

In fact, this is the block that separates a personal banker resume from a teller resume with a better job title, and almost nobody writes it.

Every bank runs a version of the same conversation: you sit down with a household, ask a fixed set of questions about income, cash flow, savings goals, debt and what is coming in the next year, and the answers steer what you open, what you decline, and what you refer. After all, the conversation is the job, and the record it leaves is what auditors check the branch on.

Adaptable resume needs conversation and referral example

Discovery: scheduled 45 minute financial review covering income and deposit pattern, monthly cash flow and overdraft history, savings goals with a date attached, existing debt and rates, and any life event in the next 12 months

Documentation: structured needs review recorded in the customer relationship system the same day, with the recommendation, the products declined and the reason, and a dated next action. Documented for 83 percent of assigned households against a branch standard of 60 percent

Placed at the desk: checking, savings, money market, certificates, health savings accounts, personal and auto loans to $20,000 unsecured, secured and unsecured cards, small business operating accounts

Referred out: residential mortgage and home equity to the lending team; investments, annuities and rollovers to the licensed representative; commercial credit above $250,000 to business banking

Conversion: 74 mortgage referrals, 29 funded for $8.1 million; 52 investment referrals, 24 kept appointments, 17 accounts opened

That is five lines and five questions; however, the fourth is the one most bankers skip. A branch manager knows most of the revenue a consumer desk creates is handed to somebody else; what they cannot tell from a normal resume is whether you hand it over well. Yet referral counts alone do not show that. Counts with conversion behind them do.

Expert Tip

If you are not registered, the law limits what you may say about investments

A bank that sells securities through a third party broker-dealer relies on the networking exception in the Securities Exchange Act. Under 15 U.S.C. 78c(a)(4)(B)(i), the exception applies where bank employees who are not associated persons of a broker or dealer "perform only clerical or ministerial functions in connection with brokerage transactions", and where those employees "do not receive incentive compensation for any brokerage transaction", with a narrow carve-out: they "may receive compensation for the referral of any customer if the compensation is a nominal one-time cash fee of a fixed dollar amount and the payment of the fee is not contingent on whether the referral results in a transaction."

Read plainly, that is the shape of an unregistered banker's day. You may set the appointment and describe in general terms what is available; you may not recommend a security, and your referral pay may not ride on whether the customer buys one.

It also tells you how to write the resume. Unregistered, write referrals and appointments kept and do not claim you sold anything. If you hold the Securities Industry Essentials with a Series 6 or Series 7 and a state registration, name it and say what it lets you close: that line moves a personal banker from the referral side of the desk to the revenue side.

Build a snapshot of your key skills

Generally, list twelve to fifteen entries in three groups: the conversation, the product set, and the systems and rules. Name the core platform, the origination system and the CRM, because a bank on the same stack reads that as weeks of ramp saved.

Adaptable resume skills example

Client work: Structured needs discovery, Cash flow and overdraft conversations, Goal-based savings planning, New-mover and onboarding calls, Retention outreach, Fee and error dispute resolution, Elder financial exploitation escalation

Products: Consumer checking and savings, Money market and certificates, Health savings accounts, Overdraft-alternative checking, Personal and auto lending, Secured and unsecured credit cards, Small business operating accounts

Rules and systems: Customer identification program, Bank Secrecy Act and anti-money laundering, Currency transaction reporting, Regulation CC funds availability, Regulation E error resolution, Truth in Savings disclosures, Core banking platform, Consumer loan origination system, CRM and appointment scheduling

Keep the two lists honest. If a conversation started at your desk and a specialist closed it, that is a referral, not a placement. Branch interviews go through the product list line by line, and a correction in the room costs more than the smaller claim on the page.

List your education and registrations

A bachelor's degree is the typical entry-level education for the sales and financial occupations that cover branch banking, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, though plenty of strong personal bankers came off the teller line without one. Above all, put registrations high; they are a gate, not a decoration.

Adaptable resume education and registrations example

Bachelor of Science, Business Administration, Finance concentration, California State University, Fresno, Fresno, CA, 2018

Federally registered mortgage loan originator, Nationwide Multistate Licensing System, registered 2021, current

Securities Industry Essentials, Series 6 and Series 63, held through the bank's broker-dealer relationship, 2024

Bank Secrecy Act and anti-money laundering training, completed annually, most recently 2026

Certificate in Consumer Lending, American Bankers Association, 2023

Progression: teller, senior teller, personal banker, licensed personal banker

On the other hand, mortgage registration follows a separate rule from the securities one. An employee of a bank, savings association or credit union who acts as a residential mortgage loan originator registers with the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System and takes a unique identifier rather than holding a state license (Regulation G, 12 CFR 1007, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau). Say whether you are registered, and do not publish the identifier on a public job board.

Choose the right layout and design

Single column, 11 or 12 point, clear headings, no photograph, no charts, no skill bars. Save as PDF unless the portal says otherwise, named for yourself and the role: marisela-quijano-personal-banker-resume.pdf.

Do

Give the desk a size in households and branches. Split the products you open yourself from the ones you refer, as two separate lines. Put conversion behind referral counts, not just the counts. State your NMLS status and your securities registrations by name, or say plainly that you hold none. Name the core platform, the origination system and the CRM. Give your unsecured lending authority as a dollar figure if you have one.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not write "portfolio of customers" without a number. Do not claim a product you referred as one you placed. Do not put a customer name, an account number or an individual balance anywhere in the file, and never take a customer list with you. Do not describe yourself as recommending investments if you hold no securities registration. Do not publish your NMLS unique identifier on a job board.

Personal banker job market and outlook

Notably, the Occupational Outlook Handbook publishes no profile for "personal banker". It covers broad occupations rather than job titles, and the consumer desk is split across three of them: securities, commodities and financial services sales agents, where branch sales work sits; tellers, the job most personal bankers came from; and loan officers, where the lending half of the desk sits. Therefore, the honest reading is a bracket across all three.

Statistical insight

Who is actually sitting down at your desk

The FDIC's 2023 National Survey of Unbanked and Underbanked Households, published on 12 November 2024, found 4.2 percent of United States households, about 5.6 million, without a bank or credit union account, and a further 14.2 percent, about 19.0 million households, underbanked: holding an account but still using a nonbank money order, check cashing, payday, pawn, rent-to-own or auto title product in the past year.

That second group is the personal banker's actual market: nineteen million households that already bank somewhere and still pay someone else for services a branch sells.

It changes what is worth writing. A banker who opened 46 overdraft-alternative checking accounts for households new to the bank is describing the growth the branch network is actually chasing. That number is far rarer on a resume than a cross-sell ratio, and it is the one a branch manager will ask about.

Both bracketing occupations point back at the same desk: 54 percent of financial services sales agents and 80 percent of loan officers work in credit intermediation, which is banking (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).

What salary you can expect as a personal banker

Again, there is no published median for the job title "personal banker", and inventing one would be worse than saying so. Instead, what anyone can state accurately is the band the branch desk sits inside.

For example, securities, commodities and financial services sales agents had a median annual wage of $78,660 in May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent under $48,040 and the highest 10 percent over $212,880. Within that occupation, however, the median in credit intermediation, which is banking, was $61,720, against $103,030 in securities and financial investments (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025). Meanwhile, loan officers had a median of $76,690, and tellers, the job below the desk, $43,030 (BLS, May 2025).

Moreover, three things move a personal banker inside that band, and all three belong on the page. Registration comes first, because it decides whether the investment conversation ends at your desk or leaves it: personal financial advisors had a median of $105,070 in May 2025, with 16 percent working in credit intermediation at a median of $96,010 (BLS, May 2025). Lending authority comes second, since a desk that closes consumer credit is worth more than one that only opens deposits. Finally, segment comes third: employers price small business and mass-affluent desks above a general consumer desk of the same size.

One caution on the published figure: the federal wage survey measures straight-time gross pay including commissions and production bonuses, and excludes non-production bonuses and the employer cost of benefits (BLS, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey documentation). Also read the median as base and incentive together, not as a total package.

Key takeaways for a personal banker resume

  1. First, size the desk in households and branches, not in "customers served".
  2. Then split the products you open yourself from the ones you refer, as two lines.
  3. Also write the needs conversation as a process: what you ask, where you record it, what happens next.
  4. Put conversion behind referral counts, especially funded mortgage volume.
  5. In addition, state your NMLS status and any securities registration by name, or say you hold none.
  6. Give your unsecured lending authority as a dollar figure if you have one.
  7. Finally, keep customer names, account numbers and individual balances out of the file entirely.

Personal banker resume questions, answered

What is the difference between a personal banker and a bank teller?

A teller runs transactions at a window and balances a drawer. A personal banker holds a list of assigned households, opens accounts, closes consumer credit within a stated authority, and refers what they cannot close. The two are published separately and paid very differently: tellers had a median annual wage of $43,030 in May 2025 against $78,660 for the financial services sales occupation that covers branch banker work (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).

How long should a personal banker resume be?

One page for the first three years. Two once you hold securities registrations, carry a lending authority, or have a referral pipeline with funded dollar volume behind it. Go two roles deep and give anything earlier a single line.

Can I put my production numbers on a resume?

Your own aggregate production is normally fine: households served, accounts opened by product family, loan units and dollars, referral counts and conversions, and documentation rates. What is never fine is anything identifying a customer: no names, no account numbers, no individual balances, nothing exported from a bank system.

Do I need a Series 6 or Series 7 to be a personal banker?

Not for a deposit and consumer lending desk. Many personal bankers work unregistered for a whole career and refer every investment conversation to a licensed representative. The networking exception in the Securities Exchange Act makes that arrangement work: unregistered bank employees perform "only clerical or ministerial functions in connection with brokerage transactions" and may take a referral fee only as "a nominal one-time cash fee of a fixed dollar amount" that is "not contingent on whether the referral results in a transaction" (15 U.S.C. 78c(a)(4)(B)(i)). Taking the registrations is one of the clearest routes up the pay range, so name them if you hold them.

What compliance knowledge should a personal banker put on the page?

The rules you touch daily, named. Customer identification at account opening; currency transaction reporting, where a report is required for each currency transaction over $10,000 (31 CFR 1010.311); Regulation CC funds availability, where the minimum next-day amount rose to $275 and the cash withdrawal amount to $550 effective 1 July 2025; Regulation E error resolution; and Truth in Savings disclosure. Named rules read as someone who has worked a desk; "ensured compliance with all banking regulations" reads as someone who has not.

What do I write if my branch is small and my numbers are modest?

Use the measures a small branch still produces: households added rather than held, products per household as a before and after, documentation rate against the branch standard, referral conversion rather than volume, and accounts opened for households new to the bank. A banker with 210 households who moved products per household from 2.8 to 3.9 and documented 83 percent of their reviews is describing the exact method a larger branch wants to hire.
