Summary
A financial advisor resume is a one to two page document naming the households you serve, the assets you are responsible for, the planning work you do, how you are paid, and the registrations that decide what you may recommend. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, a compensation and duty block most applicants omit, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook.
Financial Advisor resume examples by experience level
A financial advisor resume is a one to two page document that names the households you serve, the assets you are responsible for, the planning work you actually do, how you are paid, and the registrations that decide what you are allowed to recommend.
The last two are where most advisor resumes fail. In practice, every applicant writes that they build lasting client relationships and deliver tailored financial solutions. Almost none says whether they are a fiduciary, whether they take commissions, and which registration they hold. Those are the first three things a hiring principal wants settled, because they decide whether you can do the job at all.
Resume guide for a financial advisor resume
To start, this guide and the corresponding financial advisor resume example will cover:
- First, how to write a financial advisor resume, section by section
- Then, why your compensation model and fiduciary status belong on the page
- Also, three adaptable summaries: associate advisor, advisor and lead advisor
- Which license or registration gates which kind of advice
- Finally, what the job market looks like and what you can expect to earn
How to write a financial advisor resume
Overall, use six sections: contact header, summary, registrations and credentials, practice experience, a book and planning snapshot, and education. In general, one page for the first five years, two once you lead client relationships.
Registrations sit high on the page because they are a gate, not an achievement. A candidate without the registration the seat requires is a no, however good the rest reads.
| Section | What it is answering | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Registrations and credentials | What are you allowed to recommend, and under whose supervision? | Directly under the summary |
| Compensation model | Fee-only, fee-based or commission, and are you a fiduciary? | In the header line or the first block |
| Practice experience | How many households, how much in assets, and what did you do for them? | Reverse chronological, numbers in every bullet |
| Planning work | What did you actually produce: plans, reviews, tax coordination, estate work? | Its own block, not buried in bullets |
Households and assets are the two numbers the reader is looking for
"Managed a book of clients" tells a hiring principal nothing. Two numbers do most of the work: how many households you are the named advisor for, and the assets you are responsible for.
Write them together, with the shape of the book: "lead advisor for 96 households and roughly $148 million in assets under management, average relationship $1.5 million, concentrated in pre-retirement professionals and small business owners." Then add the flow number, which is harder to fake than the stock: "brought in $11.4 million of net new assets across 14 new households in the last year, 9 of them referred by existing clients."
If you are not yet the named advisor on relationships, say what you are: "supported 3 senior advisors across 210 households, produced 64 financial plans and led 90 review meetings in the last year."
Run the finished file through the free ATS checker before you submit. Advisory firms and broker-dealers both run applications through parsing systems before a person opens them.
Choosing the best resume format for a financial advisor resume
Reverse chronological, single column. This is a regulated occupation with a public registration history, so a timeline that does not match the record on BrokerCheck or Investment Adviser Public Disclosure is a problem rather than a style choice.
Explain gaps and short stays plainly. A hiring firm can see every registration date, every firm you were associated with and every disclosure event, and it will look before it calls you. A resume consistent with the record reads as candour; one that is not reads as something to investigate.

Use the CFP marks only if your certification is current, and write the registration exactly as you hold it. A reader can verify both in about a minute, and the check is routine.
Make use of a summary
Next, write four lines: your role and setting, the households and assets you are responsible for, the planning work you do, and your registration and compensation model.
Associate advisor at a fee-only registered investment adviser, supporting 3 lead advisors across 210 households and roughly $290 million in assets. Produced 64 financial plans in the last year covering retirement income, tax-aware withdrawal sequencing and education funding, and ran 90 client review meetings as second chair. Hold the Series 65 and sit as an investment adviser representative; CFP candidate with the coursework complete and 4,100 qualifying hours logged.
CFP professional and lead advisor for 96 households and roughly $148 million in assets under management at a fee-only registered investment adviser, with an average relationship of $1.5 million concentrated in pre-retirement professionals and business owners. Added $11.4 million of net new assets across 14 households last year, 9 of them client referrals, while holding 98% household retention over three years. Investment adviser representative, Series 65, no commissions or referral fees.
Director of financial planning and lead advisor at a fee-only registered investment adviser, responsible for 182 households and roughly $340 million in assets and for a team of 3 advisors and 2 associates. Rebuilt the firm's planning process around a documented annual service calendar, which raised the share of households with a current written plan from 54% to 91% in two years. CFP professional, investment adviser representative, and the firm's designated supervisor for planning quality review.
Right vs wrong: the same financial advisor summary, twice
| ✅ Right | ❌ Wrong |
|---|---|
| Lead advisor for 96 households and roughly $148 million in assets at a fee-only registered investment adviser. | Experienced financial advisor with a proven track record of building strong client relationships. |
| Added $11.4 million of net new assets across 14 households, 9 of them referrals, with 98% retention over three years. | Consistently grew my book of business and exceeded targets year over year. |
| Investment adviser representative, Series 65, no commissions or referral fees. | Fully licensed and committed to always doing what is right for my clients. |
In short, the right column is verifiable and specific about duty and pay. The left column could have been written by a candidate at any firm, under any compensation model, holding any registration or none at all.
Outline your financial advisor experience
Then give firm, title, city, the regulatory shape of the firm, and dates. Then four to six bullets. In addition, each names a countable piece of the practice.

How you are paid and whom you owe a duty to
In fact, this is the block that almost no advisor resume contains, and it is the first thing a hiring principal wants settled.
Two different legal standards govern advice in the United States, and which one applies to you follows from how your firm registers rather than from what you call yourself.
Investment advisers and their representatives owe clients a fiduciary duty, which the Securities and Exchange Commission describes as comprising a duty of care and a duty of loyalty (SEC press release 2019-89, 5 June 2019). Broker-dealers and their associated persons are governed instead by Regulation Best Interest, which requires them to act in the best interest of a retail customer at the time a recommendation is made, without placing their own interests ahead of the customer's, through four component obligations covering disclosure, care, conflicts of interest and compliance. The SEC adopted it on 5 June 2019 with a compliance date of 30 June 2020, from which point broker-dealers and SEC-registered advisers also had to deliver a Form CRS relationship summary to retail investors (SEC, Regulation Best Interest small entity compliance guide).
Fee-only, fee-based and commission advisor pay
Compensation language is regulated too, and it is used loosely in job adverts and on resumes. CFP Board permits a CFP professional to describe their compensation as fee-only only when "the CFP professional and the CFP professional's Firm receives no Sales-Related Compensation" and no related party receives it either, where sales-related compensation "provides incentives for the purchase or sale of Financial Assets and includes both commissions and other compensation incentives" (CFP Board, guidance for fee-only advisors). However, fee-based is not a softer synonym; CFP Board treats it as fee and commission together. For example, the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors requires its registered advisors to work "in a Fee-Only capacity" with "no commissions and referral fees" and expects them to hold the CFP designation (NAPFA, accessed September 2026).
Registration: Investment Adviser Representative of an SEC-registered investment adviser. Series 65, NASAA Investment Advisers Law Examination, passed 2019. No broker-dealer affiliation.
Compensation model: Fee-only. Advisory fee on assets under management and flat planning fees. No commissions, no trailing commissions, no referral fees, no proprietary products.
Standard of conduct: Fiduciary duty owed to advisory clients at all times. CFP Board Code of Ethics and Standards of Conduct.
Disclosure documents: Contribute to the firm's Form ADV Part 2A and Part 2B and deliver Form CRS at the start of every relationship.
Supervisory role: Designated reviewer for planning quality, 3 advisors and 2 associates.
Write this block plainly and truthfully. If you hold securities registrations and take commissions on some business, say so; a hybrid arrangement is common and legal, and a firm looking for one will read it as a fit. What loses the interview is a resume implying fiduciary, fee-only advice from someone whose registration record shows commission business, because the record is public.
One more rule, and it is absolute. Specifically, clients do not go on the resume: not by name, not by initial, not by employer, not by account value, not by holding, and not by a description close enough to identify them. Describe the book by size, segment and structure instead.
Build a snapshot of your key skills
Generally, list ten to fourteen entries, grouped by planning work, operations and the client-facing skills the job turns on.
Planning: Retirement income and withdrawal sequencing, Roth conversion analysis, Social Security claiming analysis, Education funding, Insurance needs review, Estate document coordination, Equity compensation planning
Investment: Model portfolio implementation, Rebalancing and tax-loss harvesting, Investment policy statement drafting, Cost basis and asset location
Operations and compliance: Form ADV and Form CRS delivery, Client file and advice documentation, Annual service calendar management, Custodial platform administration
Systems: eMoney or RightCapital planning software, Redtail or Wealthbox CRM, Orion or Tamarac portfolio accounting, Charles Schwab and Fidelity custodial platforms
Name the actual platforms. A firm running one planning tool and one custodian reads that line as an estimate of your onboarding time.
List your education, licenses and certifications
As a rule, list registrations first, with the exam and the year. Then the CFP or other certifications with status. Then the degree.
Series 65, NASAA Investment Advisers Law Examination, passed 2019. Registered as an investment adviser representative in ME, MA and NH.
CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER certification, CFP Board, awarded 2022. Current; continuing education requirement met.
Bachelor of Arts, Economics, University of Maine, Orono, ME, 2016
Additional training: Retirement Income Certified Professional coursework, 2023. Firm-level anti-money laundering and privacy training, annually.
The exams themselves, from the bodies that set them. For instance, the Securities Industry Essentials exam covers "basic securities industry information including concepts fundamental to working in the industry, such as types of products and their risks; the structure of the securities industry markets, regulatory agencies and their functions; and prohibited practices". Moreover, it is open to anyone aged 18 or older, runs to 75 questions in 1 hour 45 minutes with a passing score of 70, and a pass stays valid for four years for a candidate not yet associated with a firm (FINRA, accessed September 2026).
The Series 7 is the general securities registration, and it "assesses the competency of an entry-level registered representative" across the solicitation, purchase and sale of securities products including corporate securities, options, direct participation programs and variable contracts: 125 questions in 3 hours 45 minutes, passing score 72, with the SIE as a corequisite and sponsorship by a FINRA member firm required to sit it. Next comes the Series 63, the NASAA Uniform Securities State Law Examination, with 60 scored questions in 75 minutes; candidates pass by answering at least 43 correctly. The Series 65, the NASAA Investment Advisers Law Examination, qualifies a person to act as an investment adviser representative: 130 scored questions in 180 minutes, passed by answering at least 92 correctly, with no corequisite exam (FINRA, accessed September 2026).
The CFP certification is the planning credential. CFP Board requires coursework through a registered program plus a bachelor's degree in any discipline, a 170-question exam in two 3-hour sessions on one day, either 6,000 hours of professional experience related to the financial planning process or 4,000 hours of apprenticeship experience, and an ethics declaration and background check, with certificants agreeing "to act as a fiduciary when providing financial advice to your client, always putting their best interests first" (CFP Board, accessed September 2026).
Choose the right layout and design
Above all, keep a single column, 10 or 11 point, no photograph, no charts, no client logos. This matters because compliance departments read resumes with the same eye they read marketing material, and a document that looks like an advertisement invites the wrong kind of attention.
Put households and assets under management in the summary. State your registration exactly as it is held, with the exam and year. Say plainly how you are paid and whether you owe a fiduciary duty. Make every date match the public registration record. Name the planning, CRM, portfolio and custodial systems you use. Describe the book by segment and structure rather than by any individual in it.
Do not name a client, initial a client, or describe a client closely enough to identify them. Do not put account values, holdings or performance for an individual relationship on the page. Do not write "fee-only" if any part of your compensation is sales-related. Do not use the CFP marks before the certification is awarded or after it has lapsed. Do not quote a personal performance record; that is marketing, it is governed by rules you are not applying here, and it does not belong on a resume.
Financial advisor job market and outlook
A slow-growing occupation with a very wide wage spread and a strong replacement flow, so the resume's job is placement rather than persuasion.
| Measure | Value |
|---|---|
| Personal financial advisor jobs, 2025 | 299,400 |
| Projected change, 2025-35 | 1% (slower than average), +4,100 |
| Projected annual openings | ~17,100 |

| On-the-job training | Long-term on-the-job training |
| Median annual wage, May 2025 | $105,070 |

The credential is growing faster than the occupation
Personal financial advisor employment is projected to grow 1 percent between 2025 and 2035, an increase of 4,100 jobs, against about 17,100 openings a year, almost all of them replacements (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections).
Certification is moving in the other direction. CFP Board reported 107,529 CFP professionals in the United States as of 31 December 2025, an all-time high and an increase of 4.3 percent on 2024, with 6,709 new certificants that year and 11,037 people sitting the exam, up 5.7 percent (CFP Board, 15 January 2026). Across the broader securities industry FINRA counted 639,723 registered representatives in 2025, a 5 percent increase since 2021 (FINRA 2026 Industry Snapshot, 1 June 2026).
The gap between a flat occupation and a growing credential is the market signal. Competition for advisory seats is concentrating around candidates who hold the planning credential and can evidence planning work, not only asset gathering.
Where the jobs sit:
| Setting | Share of employment | Median annual wage (May 2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Securities, commodity contracts and other financial investments | 65% | $120,870 |
| Credit intermediation and related activities | 16% | $96,010 |
| Professional, scientific and technical services | 3% | $99,320 |
| Insurance carriers and related activities | 3% | $84,500 |

What salary you can expect as a financial advisor
The median annual wage for personal financial advisors was $105,070 as of May 2025. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $50,190 and the highest 10 percent more than $357,020 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025). That is one of the widest spreads in this category, and it reflects a job where part of the pay is usually a share of what the book produces.
Setting explains much of it. Advisors in securities, commodity contracts and other financial investments had a median of $120,870 in May 2025, against $96,010 in credit intermediation, mostly bank-based advice, and $84,500 in insurance carriers (BLS, May 2025).
Read the published figure carefully before you use it in a negotiation. Also note that Bureau wages are "straight-time, gross pay, exclusive of premium pay", including base rate, commissions, incentive pay and production bonuses, and excluding non-production bonuses, overtime and benefits (BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, accessed September 2026). For an advisor on a grid or a revenue share, the published number does capture the payout element, which makes this median more useful than most.
Still, what moves you inside the band is the book and the credential. In particular, households and assets you are the named advisor for, net new assets, retention, evidenced planning work and a current CFP certification are the five things a hiring firm prices.
Key takeaways for a financial advisor resume
- First, put households and assets under management in the first two lines.
- State your registration exactly, with the exam and the year you passed it.
- Say how you are paid and whether you owe a fiduciary duty; do not leave the reader to guess.
- Use fee-only only if no part of your compensation is sales-related.
- Evidence the planning work, not only the asset gathering.
- Also keep every client off the page: no names, no initials, no values, no holdings.
- Finally, make the dates match the public registration record exactly.

Financial advisor resume questions, answered
How long should a financial advisor resume be?
One page for your first five years. Two pages once you are the named advisor on relationships, lead a team, or carry a planning and committee record worth listing, and the second page should be practice detail rather than a longer skills list.
Do I need a CFP to be a financial advisor?
No, but it is the credential the hiring market reads. The Handbook lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level education, with long-term on-the-job training and no prior related experience required (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025). CFP Board reported 107,529 CFP professionals in the United States at the end of 2025 against an occupation of 299,400 (CFP Board, 15 January 2026, and BLS, 2025): common enough to be expected in planning-led firms, and still a differentiator elsewhere.
What is the difference between fee-only and fee-based on a resume?
They are not synonyms. CFP Board allows fee-only only when neither the professional, the firm nor a related party receives sales-related compensation, which includes commissions and other incentives to buy or sell financial assets (CFP Board, guidance for fee-only advisors). Fee-based means fee and commission together. Write whichever is accurate; the mismatch between a claim and a registration record is easy to spot and hard to explain.
Which license do I actually need?
It depends on what you will recommend and how your firm is registered. Acting as an investment adviser representative generally runs through the Series 65, the NASAA Investment Advisers Law Examination. Selling securities as a registered representative runs through the SIE plus the Series 7, with the Series 63 for state registration, and those representative-level exams require sponsorship by a member firm (FINRA, accessed September 2026). Ask the hiring firm which registration the seat carries before you pay for an exam.
How do I write about clients without identifying them?
Describe the book, never the person. Household count, approximate assets, average relationship size, client segment and the planning work you did are all publishable. A name, an initial, an employer, an account value or a holding is not. If a sentence would let a reader work out who a client is, cut it.
What should an entry-level financial advisor resume include?
The support role written as a job: how many lead advisors and households you supported, how many plans you produced, how many review meetings you attended and in what capacity, the systems you worked in, and your exam progress with dates. Then the degree and any CFP coursework with hours logged.
