Ms. Avery Dunbar Managing Principal Penobscot Ridge Wealth Portsmouth, United States

Application for Senior Advisor, Penobscot Ridge Wealth

Dear Ms. Dunbar,

I am applying for the Senior Advisor post at Penobscot Ridge Wealth. I am currently the lead advisor for 96 households and roughly $148 million in assets at Casco Reach Wealth Partners, a fee-only registered investment adviser, and I am registered as an investment adviser representative on the Series 65 with CFP certification current since 2022.

The work I would most want to bring across is the planning side. In the last year I produced 64 written plans covering retirement income, tax-aware withdrawal sequencing, insurance review and education funding, and built withdrawal and Roth conversion sequencing for 31 households within five years of retirement, coordinating each with the client's own tax preparer. Household retention has been 98% over three years, and $11.4 million of the $12 million in net new assets last year came from 14 households, 9 of them referred by existing clients.

Your Form ADV describes a flat-fee planning engagement alongside the assets-under-management fee, which is closer to how I think about the work than a purely asset-based schedule. I would want to spend the first quarter on the planning calendar and on the households that have not had a current written plan for a while, since that is where I have found the most value at my own firm.

I have never taken a commission, a trailing commission or a referral fee, and I hold no broker-dealer affiliation, so there would be no transition issues on the compensation side. I could start within six weeks. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, Manon Lefebvre, CFP

Summary

A financial advisor cover letter names the households and assets you are responsible for, how you are paid, whether you owe clients a fiduciary duty, and one piece of planning work with a result attached. This guide gives you a full adaptable letter, the openings that work on a hiring principal, and what has to stay off the page.

Financial Advisor cover letter examples by experience level

A financial advisor cover letter is a one-page letter that tells a hiring principal how large a practice you run, how your firm pays you, what duty you owe the people you advise, and what your planning work has actually produced.

Advisory hiring is unlike most hiring in one respect: the reader can verify half your letter before replying. In practice, registration dates, firm affiliations and disclosure history are public. A letter that is precise and consistent with that record earns a call; a vague one invites a check you would rather not prompt.

Guide to a financial advisor cover letter

Specifically, this guide and the corresponding financial advisor cover letter example will cover:

  • First, how to structure the letter, paragraph by paragraph
  • Then, why households, assets and your compensation model belong in the opening
  • Also, how to name your duty to clients without overclaiming
  • What planning evidence looks like when the book is small
  • Finally, what must stay off the page entirely

Expert Tip

Answer the three screening questions in the first paragraph

A hiring principal at an advisory firm is screening for three things before anything else: how big a practice you have run, what registration you hold, and whether your compensation history fits theirs.

Answer all three in two sentences. "I am the lead advisor for 96 households and roughly $148 million in assets at a fee-only registered investment adviser, registered as an investment adviser representative on the Series 65." That is a candidate a principal can place immediately.

If you are moving from a commission or hybrid model to a fee-only firm, say so in the letter rather than letting them find it. It is a common and legitimate move, and naming it yourself reads as candour rather than as something discovered.

What counts as evidence in a financial advisor letter

However, a small book is not a weak letter. Pick the countable thing you actually do.

Kind of evidenceWhat it looks like in a sentence
Practice sizeLead advisor for 96 households and roughly $148 million in assets, average relationship $1.5 million
Growth$11.4 million of net new assets across 14 households, 9 of them client referrals
RetentionHousehold retention of 98% over three years
Planning outputProduced 64 written plans covering retirement income, withdrawal sequencing and education funding
Depth of workBuilt withdrawal and Roth conversion sequencing for 31 households within five years of retirement
Support roleSupported 3 lead advisors across 210 households and sat second chair in 90 review meetings
ProcessRebuilt the annual service calendar; households with a current written plan rose from 54% to 91%

Saying how the firm pays you, and what you owe

This belongs in the letter, not only the resume, because it is the thing the reader is trying to work out.

Two standards apply to advice in the United States. For example, investment advisers and their representatives owe clients a fiduciary duty, which the Securities and Exchange Commission describes as a duty of care and a duty of loyalty (SEC press release 2019-89, 5 June 2019). Broker-dealers and their associated persons are governed by Regulation Best Interest, which requires them to act in a retail customer's best interest at the time of a recommendation, without placing their own interests ahead of the customer's, through obligations covering disclosure, care, conflicts of interest and compliance; it was adopted on 5 June 2019 with a compliance date of 30 June 2020 (SEC, Regulation Best Interest small entity compliance guide).

In addition, use the word fee-only only where it is accurate. In fact, CFP Board permits a CFP professional to describe compensation as fee-only only where neither the professional, the firm nor a related party receives sales-related compensation, which "includes both commissions and other compensation incentives" (CFP Board, guidance for fee-only advisors). Fee-based means fee and commission together. If yours is a hybrid arrangement, write it as one.

Do

Name households and assets in the opening. State your registration and the exam behind it. Say plainly how you are paid. Name one piece of planning work and attach a number and a period to it. Read the firm's Form ADV before you write, and reference something real from it. Explain a model change or a firm move in your own words.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not name a client, initial a client or describe one closely enough to identify them. Do not put an individual account value, holding or return in the letter. Do not claim a personal performance record. Do not write fee-only if any part of your pay is sales-related. Do not send a letter whose dates conflict with your public registration record.

Statistical insight

A flat occupation, a growing credential

Personal financial advisors held 299,400 jobs in 2025, with employment projected to grow 1 percent through 2035, an increase of 4,100 jobs, and about 17,100 openings a year over the decade, almost all replacements (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections).

The credential is growing faster than the occupation. CFP Board reported 107,529 CFP professionals in the United States as of 31 December 2025, an all-time high and up 4.3 percent on 2024, with 11,037 people sitting the exam that year (CFP Board, 15 January 2026).

Pay separates by setting rather than by title. The occupation's median annual wage was $105,070 in May 2025, but advisors in securities, commodity contracts and other financial investments had a median of $120,870 against $96,010 in credit intermediation and $84,500 in insurance carriers (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025). Naming your setting and your model in the letter is what places you on that scale.

Length, format and sending it

One page, four paragraphs, 250 to 400 words. PDF unless the portal says otherwise, named for yourself and the post: manon-lefebvre-senior-advisor-cover-letter.pdf.

Address a person. Advisory firms are small, and the firm site and the Form ADV brochure name their principals. "Dear Hiring Manager" on a letter that is otherwise this specific therefore reads as a file sent to twelve firms.

Keep every figure identical to your resume, and keep both consistent with the public registration record. Our financial advisor resume example uses the same numbers as the letter above.

Key takeaways

  1. First, put households, assets and your registration in the first two sentences.
  2. Then say how the firm pays you, in plain words, and do not stretch fee-only.
  3. Next, name the duty you owe clients and let the reader check it.
  4. Also, give one piece of planning work with a number and a period attached.
  5. After that, read their Form ADV and reference one real thing from it.
  6. Above all, keep every client off the page: no names, no initials, no values, no returns.
  7. Finally, address a named principal and keep it to one page.

Financial advisor cover letter questions, answered

How long should a financial advisor cover letter be?

One page, four paragraphs, 250 to 400 words. A hiring principal is usually also a working advisor reading between client meetings, and length is not read as effort.

Should I say how much I manage if my book is small?

Yes, with the household count next to it. A book of 38 households and $41 million is a real practice and reads as one. If you are not yet the named advisor, write the support numbers instead: advisors supported, households covered, plans produced, review meetings attended.

Do I mention that I am moving from commission to fee-only?

Say it yourself, in one sentence, without apology. The move is common, the registration record makes it visible anyway, and naming it lets you frame it as a choice rather than leaving the reader to infer one.

Can I mention a specific client success story?

Not with anything identifying in it. Describe the work and the group: "built withdrawal and Roth conversion sequencing for 31 households within five years of retirement" is a stronger sentence than a single anonymised anecdote, and it carries no disclosure risk at all.

What do I write with no advisory experience yet?

Write the closest countable work you have: plans drafted, meetings prepared, client service volume, custodial platform work, or exam progress with dates. Then say which registration you hold or are studying for. The Series 65, the NASAA Investment Advisers Law Examination, is 130 scored questions in 180 minutes and has no corequisite exam (FINRA, accessed September 2026), so it is one a candidate can sit before being hired.
