Ms. Halina Brzezinski Branch Manager, Shaw Avenue Kings Canyon Federal Savings Fresno, United States

Application for Personal Banker, Kings Canyon Federal Savings

Dear Ms. Brzezinski,

I am applying for the Personal Banker post at your Shaw Avenue branch. I currently serve 540 assigned consumer households across two branches, open the full deposit set at the desk, and close consumer credit within a $20,000 unsecured authority. I am federally registered as a mortgage loan originator, so a residential application can be taken at my desk rather than booked for another week.

The part of my desk I would most want to bring across is the documentation. I run a scheduled 45 minute financial review rather than working from walk-in traffic, and I record the recommendation, the products declined and the reason, and a dated next action the same day. That habit took products per household from 3.1 to 4.4 over two years and lifted my documented review rate to 83 percent against a branch standard of 60 percent. It also made the referrals worth something: of 74 mortgage referrals last year, 29 funded for $8.1 million, because the lending team received a file with the answers already in it.

I know the Shaw Avenue branch sits in a market with a lot of households that hold an account and still use check cashing and money orders, which is the group I have had most success with. Forty-six of the accounts I opened last year were overdraft-alternative checking for households new to the bank. I would want to work the new-mover list the same way, and I am glad to run onboarding calls in Spanish, which is half my current conversations.

I hold no securities registrations today and refer every investment conversation to the licensed representative; I would take the Securities Industry Essentials and a Series 6 if the branch wants that coverage. I can give four weeks' notice. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, Marisela Quijano

Summary

A personal banker cover letter tells a branch manager which of their customers you could finish with on day one, which you would hand off, and what happened the last time you did. This guide gives you a full adaptable letter, the openings that work, what counts as evidence at a consumer desk, and how to handle the two registration questions without overclaiming.

Personal Banker cover letter examples by experience level

In short, a personal banker cover letter is a one-page letter that answers a branch manager's first question: on day one, which of my customers can this person sit down with and finish with, and which do they have to hand to somebody else?

In fact, branch managers hire under pressure, usually because a desk has been empty for weeks and whoever is free is covering the households on that list. Therefore, a letter that names the product set and the registration status in the first paragraph answers the thing that worries them.

Guide to a personal banker cover letter

Overall, this guide and the corresponding personal banker cover letter example will cover:

  • How to structure the letter, paragraph by paragraph
  • Why the product set and the registration belong in the opening
  • What counts as evidence at a consumer desk when you have no sales award to cite
  • How to write about referrals without claiming business you did not close
  • The openings that work, and the ones that read as every other letter

Expert Tip

Open with the product set, not the passion

The sentence a branch manager wants in line two is a list. "I open the full consumer deposit set at the desk and close consumer credit to $20,000 unsecured, and I am federally registered as a mortgage loan originator" tells them exactly what happens when a customer sits down with you.

The second sentence is the boundary: what leaves your desk and goes where. That is not an admission of weakness. It is the part of the job that most bankers do badly, and a manager who has watched referrals go cold knows it.

Then one number. Households served, products per household as a before and after, or referrals with conversion behind them. One is enough in a letter; the resume carries the rest.

What counts as evidence at a consumer desk

Of course, not every branch runs a sales contest, and not every good banker has won one. However, there is plenty else to point at.

Statistical insight

Nineteen million households already bank somewhere and still pay someone else

The FDIC's 2023 National Survey of Unbanked and Underbanked Households, published 12 November 2024, found 4.2 percent of United States households, about 5.6 million, with no bank or credit union account, and a further 14.2 percent, about 19.0 million households, underbanked: they hold an account and still used a nonbank money order, check cashing, payday, pawn, rent-to-own or auto title product in the past year.

That is the growth a branch network is chasing, and it is a consumer desk job rather than a marketing one. The same survey found 48.3 percent of banked households using mobile banking as their primary way to reach their accounts, so the people still walking into a branch are largely the ones with something to sort out. A letter that names what you did for that group is unusual; a letter about passion for service is not.

Registrations, and what to say about them

Specifically, there are two separate questions and they have different answers.

Mortgage comes first. An employee of a bank, savings association or credit union acting as a residential mortgage loan originator registers with the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System and takes a unique identifier, rather than holding the state license a non-depository originator needs (Regulation G, 12 CFR 1007, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau). In short, say whether you hold a registration. Therefore, do not put the identifier in a letter.

In addition, securities comes second, and the wording matters. Where a bank sells investments through a third party broker-dealer, the networking exception in the Securities Exchange Act allows it on the condition that unregistered bank employees "perform only clerical or ministerial functions in connection with brokerage transactions", and that they "do not receive incentive compensation for any brokerage transaction", except that they "may receive compensation for the referral of any customer if the compensation is a nominal one-time cash fee of a fixed dollar amount and the payment of the fee is not contingent on whether the referral results in a transaction" (15 U.S.C. 78c(a)(4)(B)(i)).

Do

Name the products you open yourself in the first paragraph. State your NMLS registration status plainly. If you hold no securities registration, say so and say you would take it. Give one number with a period attached. Name one real thing about the branch or the market, taken from their own pages or a visit. Say what language you can run a conversation in if it is one the market uses.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not describe yourself as advising customers on investments if you hold no securities registration. Do not claim a referred product as one you placed. Do not name a customer, an account number or a balance, in the letter or in the interview. Do not send a letter with no branch in it. Do not lead with a philosophy of customer service; it delays every fact the reader wants.

Length, format and sending it

Similarly, aim for one page, four paragraphs, 250 to 400 words. Likewise, send a PDF unless the portal says otherwise, named for yourself and the post: marisela-quijano-personal-banker-cover-letter.pdf.

Moreover, address the branch manager by name where you can find it. After all, branch leadership is usually listed on a bank's own location pages, and "Dear Hiring Manager" on an otherwise specific letter reads as a letter sent to nine branches.

Above all, keep every figure identical to the one on your resume. For instance, our personal banker resume example is written with the same numbers used here.

Key takeaways

  1. First, name the products you open yourself in the first two sentences.
  2. In addition, say what leaves your desk and where it goes; the handoff is half the job.
  3. Similarly, give one number with a period attached, not a list of them.
  4. Put conversion behind referrals, especially funded mortgage volume.
  5. Likewise, state your NMLS status and your securities registrations, or say you hold none.
  6. Moreover, name one real thing about the branch or the market.
  7. Finally, address the branch manager and keep it to one page.

Personal banker cover letter questions, answered

How long should a personal banker cover letter be?

One page, four paragraphs, 250 to 400 words. Branch managers read these between customers, and length does not read as effort.

Do I need a cover letter if the bank application is a portal?

Attach one wherever there is a field for it. The portal collects the same structured fields from everyone applying. The letter is the only place you can say which products you open yourself, which you refer, and what happened to the last hundred referrals you sent.

What do I write with no banking experience yet?

Write the closest thing you have as a desk. Retail, call center and collections work all contain the transferable parts: a fixed discovery conversation, a product set with rules attached, documentation someone audits, and a handoff to a specialist. Then say plainly what you do not have, and that you expect Bank Secrecy Act training in the first week and a background and credit check as part of hiring.

Should I mention that I am not registered for securities?

Yes, and it reads as competence rather than a gap. The networking exception that lets banks sell investments through a third party broker-dealer requires unregistered employees to perform "only clerical or ministerial functions in connection with brokerage transactions" (15 U.S.C. 78c(a)(4)(B)(i)), so a manager already knows exactly what an unregistered banker can do. Saying it yourself, and offering to take the Securities Industry Essentials and a Series 6, turns the boundary into a plan.

Can I put my numbers in the letter?

Your own aggregate numbers, yes: households served, accounts opened, loan units and dollars, referral counts and conversions, documentation rates. Never a customer name, an account number or an individual balance, and never anything exported from a bank system. If your employment agreement restricts internal sales data, use percentages and ranges instead.
