Application for Branch Manager, Colfax Branch, Sand Creek Federal Bank

Dear Ms. Ashgrove,

I am applying for the Branch Manager post at Sand Creek Federal Bank. I currently run a $126 million deposit branch with 11 full time staff, grown $14 million net new over two years against a $9 million plan, and internal audit has come back satisfactory in two consecutive cycles with no repeat findings.

The work I would want to bring to you is the branch I was given in 2022. It was losing roughly $600,000 in deposits a month, the internal audit was unsatisfactory with nine repeat findings, and two of eleven positions were vacant. I rebuilt the opening and closing routine, put dual control on a published schedule rather than a habit, and started a weekly exception review with the whole branch rather than with the supervisors. I filled both vacancies internally, which meant the people who knew the customers stayed. Fourteen months later the audit came back satisfactory with no repeats and deposits were up $9.4 million.

Your Colfax branch sits in the same small business corridor my current branch works, and the posting describes a deposit base close to mine with a larger commercial mix. The first thing I would do is measure lobby and appointment traffic for a fortnight before touching the schedule, because most branch staffing problems I have seen were schedule problems wearing a hiring problem's clothes.

I am a federally registered mortgage loan originator under the SAFE Act and my Bank Secrecy Act training is current for 2026. I can start on four weeks' notice, and I will bring no documents, reports or customer information with me. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, Leonora Vasilenko

Summary

A bank manager cover letter tells a regional manager how big your branch is, how much it grew and over what period, what the control record looks like, and what you did about a branch that was failing. This guide gives you a full adaptable letter, the openings that work, and the rules on what you may say about an audit or an examination.

Bank Manager cover letter examples by experience level

A bank manager cover letter is a one page letter that answers a regional manager's two questions at once: will this branch grow under you, and will it stay clean while it does.

Nearly every letter in the folder answers only the first, and answers it in adjectives. The letter that gives a deposit base, a net new number with a period attached and an audit history is doing something the rest of the stack is not.

Guide to a bank manager cover letter

This guide and the corresponding bank manager cover letter example will cover:

  • How to structure the letter, paragraph by paragraph
  • Why the branch size and the control record belong in the opening
  • What you may say about an audit or an examination, and what you may not
  • How to write a turnaround so it reads as method rather than luck
  • The openings that get a manager file read to the end

Expert Tip

Put the audit in the first half of the letter

Growth is the thing every applicant writes about and the thing a regional manager can verify least. Controls are the thing almost nobody writes about and the thing that wakes a regional manager up at night.

A branch that grows and fails an audit is a harder problem than a branch that does neither, because the second is a staffing decision and the first is a remediation plan, a regional visit and a conversation with the head of compliance.

So say it early: "two consecutive satisfactory internal audits with no repeat findings" or, better, "I inherited nine repeat findings and the next two cycles came back clean." The second sentence is worth more than any growth number, because it describes a method rather than a market.

What counts as evidence in a branch manager letter

Pick one from each half. A growth number on its own reads as a market; a control number on its own reads as a caretaker.

Kind of evidenceWhat it looks like in a sentence
SizeA $126 million deposit branch with 11 full time staff across six windows and three desks

What you may and may not say about an audit or an examination

This is the part of a branch manager letter that gets written carelessly, and it is the part a compliance-minded reader notices.

Do

Describe your own branch's internal audit outcomes as ratings and finding counts, including what you inherited. Say which testing populations your branch owned during an examination and whether it produced findings. Reference a Community Reinvestment Act performance evaluation if it is relevant, since the written evaluation is public and its rating is one of outstanding, satisfactory, needs to improve or substantial noncompliance (FFIEC, CRA Ratings). Say plainly in the closing that you will bring no documents or customer information with you.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not quote or attach an examination report, name a safety and soundness rating, or describe examiner conversations; those are confidential supervisory information belonging to the agency and the bank. Do not attach internal audit workpapers or exception reports. Do not name a customer or a colleague. Do not describe a branch you inherited in good shape as a turnaround, because the regional manager will ask what the starting state was.

Statistical insight

Fewer windows, the same branches, more management

Financial managers, the occupation that covers banking management, are projected to grow 10 percent between 2025 and 2035, adding 84,900 jobs with about 65,600 openings a year, while tellers are projected to decline 13 percent over the same period (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025 to 2035 projections).

The branch network itself is still large. The FDIC's 2025 Summary of Deposits, covering data as of 30 June 2025 and released in September 2025, reported more than 76,000 domestic offices operated by more than 4,400 FDIC-insured institutions.

The mix inside them is what moved. The FDIC's 2023 National Survey of Unbanked and Underbanked Households, published 12 November 2024, found 48.3 percent of banked households naming mobile banking as their primary method of account access, with teller use as a primary method down by more than half over the preceding decade. A letter about supervising a busy teller line is describing a job that is shrinking. A letter about growth, development and controls is describing the one being hired for.

Length, format and sending it

One page, four paragraphs, 300 to 400 words. A branch manager letter runs slightly longer than a teller letter because the turnaround paragraph needs room, but it should never reach a second page. PDF unless the portal asks otherwise: leonora-vasilenko-branch-manager-cover-letter.pdf.

Address the regional or market manager by name if the posting or the bank's site gives it. Name the branch, not just the bank, since branch manager postings are location specific and a letter with no branch in it reads as one sent to every opening in the state.

Use exactly the figures from your resume. Our bank manager resume example is built on the same deposit base, growth number and audit history used here.

Key takeaways

  1. Open with branch size, headcount and a net new growth number with its period.
  2. Put the audit record in the first half of the letter, not the last line.
  3. Write one turnaround with a starting state, the method and an end state.
  4. Name the branch and one accurate thing about its market.
  5. Say what you would do first, and make it a measurement rather than a promise.
  6. Keep confidential supervisory information and customer details out entirely.
  7. State your registration and training currency, and keep it to one page.

Bank manager cover letter questions, answered

How long should a bank manager cover letter be?

One page, four paragraphs, 300 to 400 words. Slightly longer than a front line letter, because the turnaround paragraph carries the weight, but never onto a second page.

Should I put deposit and growth numbers in the letter?

Yes, and they should match your resume exactly. Aggregate branch performance is not customer information: deposit base, net new growth, loan production, fee income, headcount, turnover and audit outcomes are all normal things for a manager to state. What does not belong is any individual customer, account or balance, or anything taken out of a bank system.

Can I mention that my branch passed an examination?

You can say what your branch contributed and what the outcome was, without the document. "I owned the funds availability and currency transaction report testing populations for the bank's 2025 compliance examination, and the branch produced no findings" is disclosable and specific. Naming a safety and soundness rating, quoting an examination report or recounting examiner conversations is not, since those are confidential supervisory information. Community Reinvestment Act performance evaluations are public and may be referenced (FFIEC, CRA Ratings).

What do I write if I am moving from retail store management?

Translate the parts that map and be exact: headcount, scheduling against measured traffic, cash loss control, audit routines, hiring and turnover, and profit and loss ownership. Then name the gap yourself. Say which banking regulations you have read, that you expect Bank Secrecy Act training in your first week, and that you understand a background and credit check is part of hiring. Banks hire branch managers out of retail regularly, and the letter that names the gap outperforms the one that hopes the reader misses it.

How do I write about a branch I inherited in good shape?

Say so, then write growth and development instead of remediation. A manager who took a clean, stable branch and grew it $14 million net new while promoting three people internally has an excellent letter; they just have a different one. Claiming a turnaround you did not run is the single easiest thing for a regional manager to unpick, because their first question will be what the numbers looked like the day you arrived.
