Summary

A tax accountant resume is a one to two page document about returns: how many you prepare or review, of which types, to which deadlines, and what you did when the position was not obvious. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, a return inventory block that almost nobody writes, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics and Internal Revenue Service figures.

Tax Accountant resume examples by experience level

A tax accountant resume is a one to two page document about returns. How many you prepare or review, of which types, to which deadlines, and what you did on the returns where the right answer was not obvious.

Almost every tax resume in a stack says the same four things: prepared individual and business tax returns, researched tax issues, communicated with clients, worked with tax software. None of those sentences tells a tax manager what they need to know before the January hiring window closes, which is what you can be handed in February and how much review it will need.

This page is also written around the shape of the year. Tax work arrives in waves against statutory dates, and a resume organized around those dates reads as written by somebody who has worked a season.

This is a resume guide, not tax advice. Nothing here is a position you should take on a return.

Resume guide for a tax accountant resume

This guide and the corresponding tax accountant resume example will cover:

  • How to write a tax accountant resume, section by section
  • The return inventory: forms, volumes, complexity and the season behind them
  • Three adaptable summaries: associate, senior and tax manager
  • How to write research, documented positions, notices and examinations
  • What the job market looks like and what you can expect to earn

How to write a tax accountant resume

Six blocks: contact header, summary, return inventory, experience, software, and education and credentials. One page for your first two seasons, two once you review other people's returns or carry your own client relationships.

SectionWhat it is answeringWhere it goes
Return inventoryWhat can this person be handed in February, and at what volume?Directly under the summary
ExperienceWhat did they own, review, research or resolve?Reverse chronological, one number per bullet
SoftwareCan they work in our stack without a season of training?Named products, preparation and research separately
Education and credentialsLicense, PTIN, credit hours, exam progress, datedLast, explicit rather than implied
Expert Tip

Count your returns by form, not by the word returns

"Prepared over 300 tax returns" is the most common sentence on a tax resume and it is nearly unusable, because a season of 300 straightforward individual returns and a season of 300 partnership returns with multistate apportionment are different jobs at different pay.

Break the count by form. Individual returns on Form 1040. Partnerships on Form 1065. S corporations on Form 1120-S. C corporations on Form 1120. Then add the complexity markers that change the work: how many states, how many Schedule K-1s issued, how many with rental or self-employment schedules, how many consolidated, how many with a fixed asset population you maintained.

Then say whether you prepared, reviewed or both, because a reviewer's 300 and a preparer's 300 are not the same claim and a manager reading quickly will assume the smaller one.

Run the file through the free ATS resume checker first. Tax recruiting filters on software names, form numbers and credentials, and all three are the first casualties of a decorative template.

Choosing the best resume format for a tax accountant resume

Reverse chronological, single column, one page early and two once you review returns or carry client relationships. Seasonal and contract seasons count as jobs; list them with the firm, the season and the volume rather than folding them into a vague range of years. Do not use a functional format: in an occupation defined by dated filings, a resume that hides dates is an unfortunate first impression.

The third line is what gets you read: your forms, your multistate exposure and your throughput before anyone opens a bullet, which is exactly the triage a tax manager is doing.

Make use of a summary

Four lines: the forms you work on, the volume and season, one area of complexity you own, and one thing you resolved.

Own multistate apportionment, the fixed asset rollforward and the basis schedules for eight partnerships, and wrote the research memo supporting the firm's treatment of a state nexus question now applied across the client base. Resolved 31 agency notices last year without escalation and hold a CPA license issued by the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy.

Tax manager adaptable resume summary example

Tax manager at a regional accounting firm, responsible for a book of 96 client groups filing about 620 returns a season across Forms 1040, 1065, 1120-S and 1120 in 21 states, with a team of five preparers. Rebuilt the season calendar around the 15 March and 15 April deadlines with a documented cut-off for information received, which cut extensions filed for missing data from 44 to 19. Represent clients in correspondence examinations under my CPA license, and review every documented position before it leaves the firm.

Tax Senior, Caldwell Yates LLP, San Antonio, TX, October 2022 to Present

Prepare and review about 240 returns a season for closely held businesses and their owners, across Forms 1040, 1065, 1120-S and 1120, with filings in 14 states.

Own multistate apportionment, the fixed asset rollforward across 60 entities, and the partner basis schedules for eight partnerships.

Wrote the research memo supporting the firm's treatment of a state nexus question for clients with remote employees, reviewed by the engagement partner and now applied across the client base.

Resolved 31 agency notices in the last year, 22 of them automated underreporter matches, assembling the response file and the supporting schedules without escalation.

Review the work of two associates during the season, returning about one return in six for correction before it reaches the partner.

Write your return inventory: forms, volumes, complexity and the season you worked to

This is the block that separates a tax accountant resume from a general accounting resume, and almost nobody writes it. Five labeled lines.

Adaptable resume return inventory example

Returns a season: about 240. Form 1040: 150. Form 1065: 52. Form 1120-S: 28. Form 1120: 10. Prepared and reviewed, roughly two-thirds prepared.

Jurisdictions: filings in 14 states, including apportionment for eight clients with employees in more than one state, plus local filings in two jurisdictions.

Complexity: 8 partnership basis schedules maintained, 60 entities in the fixed asset system, 94 Schedule K-1s issued, 12 returns with rental activity, 3 consolidated groups.

Season calendar: information cut-off published in January, 15 March for partnerships and S corporations, 15 April for individuals and C corporations, extended filings on 15 September and 15 October, planning work from November.

Controversy: 31 agency notices resolved in the most recent year, 22 of them automated underreporter matches, none escalated to the partner. Two correspondence examinations supported end to end.

Returns by form is the sizing question and it belongs first. A reviewer count without the word review in front of it will be read as a preparer count.

Jurisdictions is the most underused line on a tax resume. Multistate work is where the difficulty and the fee premium sit, and the number of states is a one-word proxy for it.

Complexity is what stops a manager from assuming your 240 were straightforward. Basis schedules, K-1 counts, fixed asset populations, consolidated groups and rental activity all say something specific about what you can be handed.

The season calendar is the line that shows you have worked a real season. The federal dates are structural rather than negotiable: Form 1065 and Form 1120-S are due on the 15th day of the third month after the end of the tax year, Form 1040 and Form 1120 on the 15th day of the fourth month, with Form 7004 giving an automatic six-month extension for the business returns (IRS Publication 509, 2026, page last reviewed 30 April 2026). For calendar-year filers in 2026 that meant a 15 April deadline, with the filing season opening on 26 January 2026 (IRS, IR-2026-12, 26 January 2026).

Controversy work is the part most candidates leave out and most firms are short of. Notices, matches and correspondence examinations are year-round work between the waves, and somebody who can assemble a response file is immediately useful.

Statistical insight

The notice pile is bigger than the audit pile

In fiscal year 2025 the IRS closed 497,621 tax return audits, producing $26.8 billion in recommended additional tax. Over the same period its Automated Underreporter program, which matches what was reported on a return against information returns filed by third parties, closed 987,460 cases (IRS, Compliance Presence, page last reviewed 5 June 2026). The IRS expected about 164 million individual returns for tax year 2025 (IRS, IR-2026-12, 26 January 2026).

Read those three numbers together. Examination touches a very small share of returns. Automated matching touches roughly twice as many taxpayers, and it arrives as a letter with a deadline rather than as an audit.

For a resume, that is a direct instruction. Notice work is the most common controversy experience in the profession, most candidates omit it, and a firm reading a resume that quantifies it knows they are looking at someone who can take the notice pile off a partner's desk in June.

Build a snapshot of your key skills

Twelve to sixteen entries in three groups: compliance, research and controversy, and software. Split preparation software from research software, because hiring managers filter on both and they are not the same list.

Adaptable resume skills example

Compliance: Individual returns on Form 1040, Partnership returns on Form 1065, S corporation returns on Form 1120-S, Corporate returns on Form 1120, Multistate apportionment, State and local filings, Partner and shareholder basis schedules, Fixed assets and depreciation, Estimated payments and extensions

Research and controversy: Tax research and memo writing, Documented position files, Agency notice response, Automated underreporter matches, Correspondence examination support, Penalty abatement requests, Year-end planning and projections

Software: CCH Axcess Tax, UltraTax CS, Lacerte, CCH Fixed Assets, Checkpoint, CCH AnswerConnect, Microsoft Excel including Power Query, SurePrep and document automation workflow

Name the products. "Tax software" matches nothing, and a firm on CCH Axcess reading a resume that says CCH Axcess has already decided you are cheaper to onboard.

List your education, credentials and PTIN

Three separate things live here and candidates routinely blur them: the license, the preparer registration, and the representation rights that follow from the license.

Anyone who prepares or assists in preparing federal tax returns for compensation must hold a valid Preparer Tax Identification Number before preparing returns, and enrolled agents must hold one as well (IRS, PTIN requirements page, last updated 16 October 2025). A PTIN is a registration, not a credential, so write it as a line of fact rather than as an achievement.

Representation rights are where the license actually bites. The IRS states that "enrolled agents, certified public accountants, and attorneys have unlimited representation rights before the IRS", while preparers without one of those credentials "may only represent clients whose returns they prepared and signed, but only before revenue agents, customer service representatives, and similar IRS employees", with no representation on appeals or collection matters (IRS, Understanding tax return preparer credentials and qualifications, page last reviewed 29 January 2026). If you hold a CPA license or an enrolled agent credential, that is what makes the difference on a controversy-heavy book.

BLS records that all states require CPA candidates to complete 150 semester hours of college coursework and that CPAs are licensed by their state's Board of Accountancy (Occupational Outlook Handbook, published 27 August 2026). The full treatment of licensure, exam progress and what you may write before you pass is on our CPA resume example.

Choose the right layout and design

Single column, 11 or 12 point, no graphics. Set the return inventory as labeled lines rather than prose, and keep the form numbers as numerals so a keyword filter finds them.

Do

Split your return count by form and say whether you prepared or reviewed. Give the number of states. Name the complexity: basis schedules, K-1 counts, fixed asset entities, consolidated groups. Show the season calendar and the deadlines you worked to. Quantify notices and examinations. Name the preparation software and the research platform separately. State the license, its board and your PTIN.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not name a client or describe one in identifiable terms. Do not put a client's income, tax, refund, balance due or specific position on the page. Do not write "over 300 returns" with no breakdown. Do not claim representation rights you do not hold. Do not list a software you opened twice.

Expert Tip

Return information is not portfolio material

The confidentiality rule in tax is stricter than most candidates assume, and it is easy to break without meaning to.

Never name a client, on a resume, in a cover letter or in an interview. Never give a client's income, tax liability, refund, balance due, valuation or transaction value. Never describe a position in enough specificity that the taxpayer could be identified from the industry, the size and the state together. "Researched the treatment of a sale-leaseback for a San Antonio restaurant group with 40 locations" is a named client with the name removed.

What you may write is your own work: form counts, jurisdiction counts, complexity markers, the number of notices you resolved, the subject of a memo stated generically as "a state nexus question for clients with remote employees", and what happened to your conclusion.

Tax accountant job market and outlook

BLS publishes no separate profile for tax accountants. They sit inside the accountants and auditors occupation, alongside the public accountants the Handbook describes as concentrating "on tax matters, advising corporations about the tax advantages of certain business decisions or preparing individual income tax returns" (Occupational Outlook Handbook, published 27 August 2026).

MeasureValue
Accountant and auditor jobs, 20251,595,200

Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections and May 2025 wage data, published 27 August 2026.

Two rows matter more to a tax accountant than to anyone else in the occupation:

IndustryShare of employmentMedian annual wage (May 2025)
Accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping and payroll services21%$81,490
Finance and insurance8%$93,290
Management of companies and enterprises6%$91,940
Self-employed5%Not published

Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025.

The first row is where most tax work happens and it carries the lowest of the published industry medians. The last row is worth noticing: self-employment is a real destination in tax in a way it is not in audit, because a book of returns is portable and an engagement is not. BLS also notes that for accountants and auditors "longer periods of work are typical at certain times of the year, such as for quarterly audits or during tax season" (published 27 August 2026).

What salary you can expect as a tax accountant

The median annual wage for accountants and auditors was $83,680 in May 2025, or $40.23 an hour. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $56,020 and the highest 10 percent more than $144,090 (BLS, May 2025).

BLS does not break the occupation out by specialism, so there is no published median for tax accountants specifically. Treat the distribution as a range you position yourself inside.

What moves you up inside it, in the order a hiring manager weighs them: the license, because it changes what you can sign and whom you can represent; the entity types you can handle without supervision, with partnerships and consolidated returns at the top; multistate exposure; review responsibility over other preparers; and a controversy record, which is scarce and hard to train. Every one of those is stated in the return inventory.

Key takeaways for a tax accountant resume

  1. Break your return count by form and say whether you prepared or reviewed.
  2. Give the number of states you file in; it is the fastest complexity signal there is.
  3. Name the complexity: basis schedules, K-1 counts, fixed asset entities, consolidations.
  4. Show the season calendar and the statutory dates you worked to.
  5. Quantify notices and examinations; almost nobody does and every firm needs it.
  6. Name the preparation software and the research platform separately.
  7. State the license and its board, the PTIN, and the representation rights that follow.
  8. Keep every client name, figure and identifiable position off the page.

Tax accountant resume questions, answered

What is the difference between a tax accountant and a tax preparer?

Scope, credential and what happens after the return is filed. A tax preparer's work centers on preparing and filing returns, often seasonally. A tax accountant usually also plans, researches and documents positions, reviews other people's returns, and handles notices and examinations afterwards. The credential is the sharpest line: the IRS gives enrolled agents, CPAs and attorneys unlimited representation rights, while other preparers may only represent clients whose returns they prepared and signed, before limited categories of IRS staff, with nothing on appeals or collection (IRS, page last reviewed 29 January 2026). Our [tax preparer resume example](/resume/tax-preparer/) covers the other side.

How do I write about busy season without sounding like everyone else?

By putting dates and numbers on it. "Worked long hours during busy season" is on every tax resume. "Published an information cut-off in January, filed to the 15 March and 15 April deadlines, and moved extensions for missing client data from 44 to 19" is a description of how you run a season. The federal dates are structural, and quoting them correctly signals experience (IRS Publication 509, 2026).

Should I put my PTIN number on my resume?

State that you hold a current PTIN, not the number itself. The requirement is real, since anyone who prepares or assists in preparing federal returns for compensation must have a valid PTIN before preparing returns (IRS, last updated 16 October 2025), so a hiring firm wants to see it. The digits are an identifier tied to you; keep them off a document you send to strangers.

How do I describe a tax position I researched without breaching confidentiality?

By subject and outcome, never by facts. "Wrote the research memo supporting the firm's treatment of a state nexus question for clients with remote employees; reviewed by the engagement partner and now applied across the client base" names the issue, the authority level it went to and what happened to it. If you cannot describe the issue without the facts, describe the process instead.

What do I put on a tax accountant resume after one season?

The season, in the shape a senior would use it. Returns by form, the states, the complexity you touched, the software you prepared in, and one quality measure such as the share of your returns that came back from the reviewer without a preparer-caused correction. Then your credential position: PTIN held, credit hours completed, and which sections of the Uniform CPA Examination you have passed with the next one scheduled.

Does a tax accountant resume change between public accounting and industry?

Yes. In public accounting you are sized by returns, clients and seasons. In a corporate tax department you are sized by entities, jurisdictions, the provision and the compliance calendar, so the inventory becomes the entity list, the places you file, and your role in the quarterly and annual provision. Translate deliberately, and keep the notice and examination line either way.
