Summary

CPA is a state license, not a job title, and a CPA resume is one where the license is the strongest single line on the page. This guide covers what the license gates, the exam and its four sections, licensure state by state, continuing professional education, and precisely what a CPA candidate may and may not claim, with sources from BLS, NASBA, the AICPA and the IRS.

CPA resume examples by experience level

CPA is not a job title. Instead, it is a license, issued by a state board of accountancy, and a CPA resume is any resume where that license is the strongest single line on the page.

As a result, that distinction decides how you build the page. If you search for a CPA resume example you are usually after a narrower answer: where the license goes, how to write it before you have it, what it lets you do that an unlicensed accountant cannot, and how to keep the claim accurate.

This page answers those. The job-shaped guides live elsewhere: for ownership of a close, our accountant resume example; for review and documented positions, the senior accountant resume example; for assurance, the auditor resume example.

Resume guide for a CPA resume

To start, this guide and the corresponding CPA resume example will cover:

  • First, what a CPA license gates, and where the line falls against an unlicensed accountant
  • Then, how to write the credential at every stage, from eligible to licensed to inactive
  • Also, the Uniform CPA Examination, its four sections and its credit window
  • Licensure state by state, including the newer pathways
  • Finally, continuing professional education, and how to show it without overclaiming

How to write a CPA resume

Overall, use six blocks: contact header with the credential, summary, license and credential block, experience, systems, and education and continuing professional education. One page if you are early, two once your scope justifies it. The order is the point: the credential moves to the top, because it is the fact that changes what a reader may ask you to do.

SectionWhat it is answeringWhere it goes
License and credential blockWhich board, which number, active or inactive, and since when?Directly under the summary
ExperienceWhat has the license been used for?Reverse chronological, one number per bullet
SystemsWhich ERP, reporting and close tools?Named products

Expert Tip

Say what the license is for, not only that you have it

A license line with nothing attached to it is a decoration. The strong version connects the credential to something in the job.

Weak: "CPA certified." Better: "CPA, Rhode Island." Strongest: "CPA, Rhode Island, active since 2022; sign the technical accounting memos supporting our revenue and lease positions and own the reporting package filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission."

The last version says why the license matters here. Many resumes carry the credential; very few explain what it is doing.

Run the file through the free ATS resume checker first, and make sure the letters CPA appear as plain text rather than inside a graphic.

Choosing the best resume format for a CPA resume

Reverse chronological, single column. Put the credential in the header line beside your name and repeat it once in a dated license block, so that both a keyword filter and a human find it. Do not build a certifications-first functional resume around it: a license is a gate, not a career, and a format that pushes the work below the fold reads as more credential than history.

Two details do the work: the board that issued the license, because state boards of accountancy issue CPA licenses across the 55 US jurisdictions (NASBA, accessed 13 September 2026), and the word active, because inactive and lapsed licenses exist.

Make use of a summary

Next, write four lines: the credential and its board, what you use the license for, one area you own, one measurable outcome.

Newly licensed CPA adaptable resume summary example

Financial reporting accountant at a publicly traded medical device manufacturer, licensed as a CPA by the Rhode Island Board of Accountancy since 2022. Prepare the quarterly and annual reporting package filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, including the disclosure checklist and the supporting tie-out binder, and own the earnings per share and segment disclosures. Cut the tie-out cycle from six days to four by rebuilding the binder around a linked source file, and hold 150 semester hours with continuing professional education current for the reporting period.

Technical accounting and reporting manager at a publicly traded medical device manufacturer, licensed as a CPA by the Rhode Island Board of Accountancy and responsible for every accounting position the company documents. Write and maintain eleven technical memos, including revenue recognition on multi-year supply agreements, the lease population and discount rate, and the treatment of a business combination completed in 2025, and present the significant judgments to the audit committee each quarter. Own the SEC reporting calendar across four filings a year and a team of three.

What the license gates, and how to write it before and after you pass

In fact, this section has two halves: what the license lets you do, and what you may write at each stage on the way to it.

What it gates. Three things are concrete rather than cultural. Filings: BLS states plainly that "any accountant who files a report with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is required to be a licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA)" (Occupational Outlook Handbook, published 27 August 2026). Representation: the IRS states that "enrolled agents, certified public accountants, and attorneys have unlimited representation rights before the IRS", while other preparers may only represent clients whose returns they prepared and signed, before limited categories of IRS staff (IRS, page last reviewed 29 January 2026). And the title itself, issued by state boards of accountancy across the 55 jurisdictions (NASBA, accessed 13 September 2026).

Everything else is preference rather than gate. Most industry accounting roles do not require the license, which is why the honest way to write exam progress matters.

Writing the CPA credential at each stage

How to write it at each stage. The rule underneath the table is one sentence: nothing goes after your name until a board has issued a license.

Where you areWhat you may writeWhat you may not write
Meet a board's education rules, not yet sitting"150 semester hours completed; meets the education requirements to sit for the Uniform CPA Examination in Rhode Island""CPA eligible" with no state named, and nothing after your name
Sections passed, exam in progress"CPA candidate: FAR and AUD passed; REG scheduled February 2027; 150 semester hours completed""CPA (in progress)", "CPA pending", or CPA beside your name
All four sections passed, license not yet issued"Passed all four sections of the Uniform CPA Examination; license application with the Rhode Island Board of Accountancy""CPA" on its own; passing the exam is not the license
Licensed"CPA, Rhode Island Board of Accountancy, license #RI-CPA-0071384, active" and CPA after your nameNothing to avoid, other than omitting the state
Inactive or lapsed"CPA, Rhode Island, inactive status since 2024""CPA" with no qualifier, which reads as active

CPA eligible is the phrase most often used loosely. It is not a credential and it does not mean the same thing in two states. Used precisely it means you meet a particular board's education requirements to sit, so name the board and the hours behind it.

The CPA exam and its credit window

The exam is worth stating correctly, because getting it wrong is a tell. The Uniform CPA Examination is a four-section, 16-hour assessment: three Core sections, Auditing and Attestation (AUD), Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR) and Taxation and Regulation (REG), plus one Discipline section of the candidate's choice from Business Analysis and Reporting (BAR), Information Systems and Control (ISC) and Tax Compliance and Planning (TCP), each four hours (NASBA, accessed 13 September 2026). To pass a section "you must score a minimum of 75", on a scale running from 0 to 99 that is neither a percentage correct nor a curve (AICPA, 15 July 2026). Name your Discipline on the resume; it says something real about where you intend to work.

The credit window is the part candidates most often get wrong. In April 2023 NASBA amended UAA Model Rule 5-7 to extend conditional credit from 18 months to 30 months and to calculate it from the date scores are released. The amendment is a recommendation to boards rather than a rule, and candidates "remain under existing rules until, if and when, the board to which they applied makes changes" (NASBA, 24 April 2023). So do not state a window on your resume: state the sections you have passed, with dates, and what is scheduled next.

Statistical insight

The license is scarcer than the occupation it sits in

NASBA's Accountancy Licensee Database recorded 650,667 actively licensed CPAs as of 27 August 2026, aggregated from 53 of the 55 CPA licensing jurisdictions (NASBA, accessed 13 September 2026). BLS counted 1,595,200 accountant and auditor jobs in 2025 and projects about 115,300 openings a year through 2035 (Occupational Outlook Handbook, published 27 August 2026).

Those two counts are not directly comparable: the licensee figure includes people who are retired, working outside accounting or licensed in more than one jurisdiction, and many accountant and auditor jobs are held by people who are not licensed. What the pair shows is that licensed CPAs are a minority of the people doing the work.

The supply side has moved. The AICPA's 2025 Trends report counted 28,082 new candidates entering the CPA Examination pipeline in 2024 against 42,626 in 2023 (AICPA, 27 October 2025). If you hold the license, it belongs in the header rather than the bottom of page two.

Build a snapshot of your key skills

Generally, list twelve to sixteen entries in three groups: technical accounting, reporting and control, and systems. The technical group should be the longest, because that is what the license is evidence for.

Adaptable resume skills example

Technical accounting: US GAAP, Revenue recognition under ASC 606, Leases under ASC 842, Business combinations, Share-based compensation, Income tax provision review, Technical memo writing, Accounting policy ownership

Reporting and control: SEC reporting on Forms 10-K and 10-Q, Disclosure checklist and tie-out, Earnings per share and segment disclosure, Audit committee reporting, Internal control over financial reporting, SOX documentation and walkthroughs

Systems: SAP S/4HANA, NetSuite, Workiva, BlackLine, Microsoft Excel including Power Query, Power BI

List your license, education and CPE

In addition, three dated facts belong here and each carries its own risk of overclaiming.

The license. Name the board, give the number if you are comfortable publishing it, and state the status. A license is public information in most jurisdictions, and the file that lets someone confirm it in ten seconds moves faster.

The 150 hours and the pathway. BLS records that all states require CPA candidates to complete 150 semester hours, 30 more than the usual four-year bachelor's degree, and that CPAs are licensed by their state's Board of Accountancy (Occupational Outlook Handbook, published 27 August 2026). That is changing state by state rather than nationally. On 14 May 2025 the AICPA and NASBA approved model legislation revising the Uniform Accountancy Act, and NASBA now describes three pathways: a graduate degree in accounting with one year of professional experience; a bachelor's degree in accounting with 30 additional semester credits, 150 hours in total, with one year of experience; and a bachelor's degree in accounting at 120 semester hours with two years of experience. All three require passing the Uniform CPA Examination, and individual states must enact legislation to adopt them (NASBA, 23 December 2025).

Each state board of accountancy sets its own requirements, not a national body, so check your own board before you plan around anything you read here.

Continuing professional education. CPE requirements are set by each state board too, so the hours figure that matters is your board's. On the resume, write the reporting period you are current through and two or three subject areas that match the job.

Adaptable resume license and education example

Certified Public Accountant, Rhode Island Board of Accountancy, license #RI-CPA-0071384, active since 2022

Master of Science in Accounting, Bryant University, Smithfield, RI, 2019. 150 semester hours completed.

Bachelor of Science, Accounting, University of Rhode Island, Kingston, RI, 2018

Continuing professional education: current for the reporting period, including revenue recognition, business combinations, SEC reporting update and ethics.

Choose the right layout and design

As a rule, use a single column, 11 or 12 point, no graphics. Also put CPA after your name in plain text, never inside a logo or an image, and repeat the full license line in a dated block. That is because applicant systems read only the text layer, and a credential inside a graphic is one the filter never sees.

Do

Put CPA after your name and name the issuing board. State whether the license is active. Say what the license is used for in your work. Write exam progress as sections passed with dates and the next one scheduled. Name the state whenever you use the phrase CPA eligible. Say your continuing professional education is current for the reporting period.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not write CPA after your name before a board has issued the license. Do not write "CPA in progress", "CPA pending" or "CPA equivalent". Do not state a credit window on the resume, since boards adopt the model rule separately. Do not imply a license from a neighboring state applies to the job's state. Do not leave an inactive or lapsed license unqualified.

CPA job market and outlook

There is no BLS occupation called CPA, because it is a license rather than a job. BLS counts licensed CPAs inside accountants and auditors alongside everyone unlicensed, so every figure below covers both.

MeasureValue
Accountant and auditor jobs, 20251,595,200
Projected change, 2025-355% (faster than average), +79,400
Projected annual openingsAbout 115,300
Typical entry-level educationBachelor's degree
Median annual wage, May 2025$83,680

Sources: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections and May 2025 wage data, published 27 August 2026, except the final row, which is NASBA's Accountancy Licensee Database aggregating 53 of 55 jurisdictions, accessed 13 September 2026.

The last row is from a different source on a different basis, included to give the license a scale rather than to be divided into the row above it.

Where licensed work concentrates:

IndustryShare of employmentMedian annual wage (May 2025)
Accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping and payroll services21%$81,490
Finance and insurance8%$93,290
Government, excluding state and local education and hospitals8%$83,350
Management of companies and enterprises6%$91,940

Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025.

For example, public accounting, the first row, is where the license is closest to compulsory and where the published median is the lowest of the four. Management of companies, the last row, is where corporate headquarters sit and where technical accounting, SEC reporting and consolidation work concentrate.

What salary you can expect as a CPA

Specifically, the median annual wage for accountants and auditors was $83,680 in May 2025, or $40.23 an hour. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $56,020 and the highest 10 percent more than $144,090 (BLS, May 2025).

BLS does not publish a separate wage series for licensed CPAs, so there is no federal figure for a CPA premium. What published sources do say is narrower: the license is a hard requirement for filing reports with the SEC (BLS, published 27 August 2026), it carries unlimited representation rights before the IRS (IRS, page last reviewed 29 January 2026), and the number of people entering the examination pipeline fell from 42,626 in 2023 to 28,082 in 2024 (AICPA, 27 October 2025) against about 115,300 projected openings a year.

The license changes which roles you are eligible for rather than adding a fixed amount to a salary. Therefore, name the gated work you have done and let the reader draw the conclusion.

Key takeaways for a CPA resume

  1. Above all, treat CPA as a license, not a job title, and build the page around what it gates.
  2. Then put CPA after your name in plain text and name the issuing board.
  3. State whether the license is active, inactive or lapsed.
  4. Also say what you use the license for in your actual work.
  5. Write exam progress as sections passed with dates and the next one scheduled.
  6. Never write CPA, or anything resembling it, before a board has issued the license.
  7. Name the state whenever you use the phrase CPA eligible.
  8. Finally, say your CPE is current for the reporting period, and check requirements with your own board.

CPA resume questions, answered

Can I put CPA on my resume if I have passed the exam but am not licensed?

No. Passing the Uniform CPA Examination is one requirement among several; the license is issued by a state board of accountancy, and until a board issues it the title is not yours to use. Write the accurate version: "Passed all four sections of the Uniform CPA Examination; license application with the Rhode Island Board of Accountancy."

What does CPA eligible actually mean on a resume?

That you meet a specific board's education requirements to sit for the examination. It is not a credential, it is not uniform across states, and without a state named it reads as vague. Write it with the board and the hours: "150 semester hours completed; meets the education requirements to sit in Rhode Island." If you have started the exam, the sections you have passed are a stronger line anyway.

Do I need 150 credit hours to become a CPA?

BLS records that all states require CPA candidates to complete 150 semester hours, 30 more than a usual four-year bachelor's degree (published 27 August 2026). The routes are changing state by state: NASBA describes three pathways, including a bachelor's degree in accounting at 120 semester hours with two years of professional experience, with states having to enact legislation and implementation dates varying (NASBA, 23 December 2025). Because the answer depends on jurisdiction, check your own state board.

How many sections does the CPA Exam have?

Four, totaling 16 hours. Three are Core sections taken by everyone: Auditing and Attestation, Financial Accounting and Reporting, and Taxation and Regulation. The fourth is a Discipline section chosen from Business Analysis and Reporting, Information Systems and Control, and Tax Compliance and Planning (NASBA, accessed 13 September 2026). Passing requires a minimum score of 75 on a 0 to 99 scale that is not a percentage correct (AICPA, 15 July 2026).

Should I list continuing professional education on a CPA resume?

One line, yes. Write that you are current for the reporting period and name two or three subject areas relevant to the job. Do not quote an hours total you cannot evidence, and do not quote a national requirement, because CPE requirements are set by each state board. The Statement on Standards for CPE Programs is issued jointly by NASBA and the AICPA, and its 2026 revisions take effect on 1 August 2026 unless a state licensing body establishes otherwise (NASBA, 20 May 2026).

Is a CPA resume different from an accountant resume?

In emphasis rather than structure. An accountant resume argues scope: entries owned, accounts reconciled, close days carried. A CPA resume argues the license and its uses: SEC filings, signed positions, representation, attest work, and roles only open to you because you hold it. If you strip the license out and the page reads like our [accountant resume example](/resume/accountant/), the license is doing no work.
