Summary

A bank teller resume is a one page document built on the drawer record: how many transactions you run a day, how much cash passes through your window, how often you balance to the penny, which hold and identification rules you apply, and how many referrals you send to the branch banker. This guide gives you three adaptable versions and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook.

Bank Teller resume examples by experience level

A bank teller resume is a one page document built on the drawer record: how many transactions you run a day, how much cash moves through your window, how often you balance to the penny, which hold and identification rules you apply without being told, and how many customers you hand on to the branch banker.

Most teller resumes say "handled cash accurately" and stop. That sentence is unverifiable, and every applicant writes it. A branch manager hiring for a window has three questions in mind: can this person be trusted alone with a drawer, will the line move, and will they notice the thing that should not be happening. Numbers answer all three.

Resume guide for a bank teller resume

This guide and the corresponding bank teller resume example will cover:

  • How to write a bank teller resume, section by section
  • Why the drawer record belongs on the page, and how to write outages honestly
  • Three adaptable summaries: new teller, senior teller and head teller
  • Which compliance rules you can claim without overclaiming
  • What the job market looks like, including an honest reading of the decline

How to write a bank teller resume

Six sections: contact header, summary, the drawer record, experience, skills and systems, education and certifications. One page, almost always. A teller resume that runs to two pages is padding, and padding reads as a thin record stretched.

The drawer record sits directly under the summary because it is the only part of the job that produces hard evidence. Everything else on a teller resume can be claimed by anyone; a balancing record cannot.

SectionWhat it is answeringWhere it goes
Drawer recordCan I put this person on a window alone?Directly under the summary
ExperienceWhat volume did they carry, and what did they catch?Reverse chronological, numbers in every bullet
Skills and systemsWhich platform do they already know?Short grouped block, core system named
CertificationsNotary, teller certificate, current compliance trainingLast block, with the issuing body
Expert Tip

Write the outage, do not hide it

Every teller is out at some point. A resume that claims a perfect record across several years reads as either untrue or as a very low volume window, and an experienced branch manager knows both.

The credible version gives three numbers: how many days you balanced to the penny, out of how many, and what the outages totaled. "Balanced to the penny on 243 of 248 days, with $61 in total outages for the year" is a sentence that a manager can picture. It says you know your own record, which almost nobody does.

Add what happened next if it is good: found and documented the same day, no repeat finding in the following internal cash count. The recovery is as interesting as the error.

Run the finished file through the ATS resume checker before you apply. Large banks route every teller application through a parsing system before a branch manager opens it.

Choosing the best resume format for a bank teller resume

Reverse chronological, one page. Bank hiring is built on verification: employment dates, gaps, and a background and credit check that has to match what you wrote. A format that obscures dates creates work for the recruiter and doubt for the compliance team.

If you are coming from retail, hospitality or a cash office, still use reverse chronological and let the transferable work speak in the bullets. A functional resume does not disguise a career change here; it only delays the timeline the recruiter is going to build anyway.

Use a plain name-based email address. The window is a trust role, and a background check is coming; every small signal of seriousness is worth having. If you hold a notary commission, put it in the header. It is a scheduling advantage for the branch, and it costs the reader nothing to see.

Make use of a summary

Four lines: role and setting, daily volume, your balancing record, and one thing beyond the drawer.

New bank teller adaptable resume summary example

Bank teller with 10 months at a six-window branch, averaging 110 transactions and roughly $38,000 in cash a day. Balanced to the penny on 187 of 192 days, with five outages totaling $34 for the year, all found and documented the same day. Trained on Regulation CC hold rules, currency transaction reporting and customer identification, and referred 34 customers to the branch banker in the first year.

Senior bank teller adaptable resume summary example

Senior teller with four years at a high volume branch, handling about 140 transactions and $52,000 in cash a day and running vault and ATM settlement two days a week. Drawer balanced to the penny on 243 of 248 days with $61 in total outages for the year, and no repeat findings in two internal cash counts. Made 92 banker referrals that produced 38 opened accounts, and hold a current Arizona notary commission.

Head teller adaptable resume summary example

Head teller and vault custodian supervising seven tellers at a branch carrying a $1.4 million cash limit, responsible for weekly cash ordering, dual control and daily proof. Cut branch teller outages from $840 to $190 a year and Regulation CC hold exceptions from 11 to 2 by rewriting the opening and closing checklists. Trained 14 new tellers, and the branch closed its last two internal audits with no cash findings.

Senior Teller, Rillito Bend Bank, Tucson, AZ, March 2022 to Present

Run a six-window branch station averaging 140 transactions and $52,000 in cash a day, including commercial deposits, night drop and coin orders.

Balanced to the penny on 243 of 248 days in the last year, $61 in total outages, each found and documented before close.

Settle the ATM and the vault two days a week under dual control, with weekly cash ordering against branch limits.

Apply Regulation CC availability and hold rules and customer identification standards at the window; hold exceptions on my station fell from 6 to 1 across two quarters after the branch checklist was rewritten.

Referred 92 customers to the branch banker last year, producing 38 opened accounts, mostly savings and small business operating accounts.

Complete annual Bank Secrecy Act and anti-money laundering training and prepare currency transaction report information for transactions over $10,000.

Put your drawer record on the page: volume, outages and balancing

This is the block almost nobody writes, and it is the one that decides whether you get called.

The teller job produces a daily audit trail that no other counter job produces. Your bank already knows your transaction counts, your outage history, your hold exceptions and your referral numbers. Pulling them together into four lines is the single highest return thing you can do to a teller resume.

Adaptable resume drawer record example

Volume: about 140 transactions and $52,000 in cash a day, six-window branch, Saturday rotation

Balancing: to the penny on 243 of 248 days in the last 12 months; $61 in total outages, largest single outage $20, all identified and documented before close

Cash responsibility: backup vault custodian, $1.4 million branch cash limit; ATM and vault settlement twice weekly under dual control; weekly cash ordering

Referrals: 92 to the branch banker, 38 opened accounts

Four lines, four different questions answered. Volume says whether you have worked at the pace this branch runs. Balancing says whether you can be left alone. Cash responsibility says how far past the window your authority already goes. Referrals say whether you are a cost or a contributor.

If your bank does not publish your own numbers to you, ask your supervisor before you leave, or keep a note of them as you go. Reconstructing a year of drawer history after you have handed in your badge is not possible.

Expert Tip

Never put a customer on your resume

Customer names, account numbers, balances and transaction details do not belong on a resume, in a cover letter, or in an interview answer. Neither do screenshots, printouts or spreadsheets taken from a bank system.

This is not a style preference. A teller who repeats a customer's balance to demonstrate experience has demonstrated the opposite, and hiring managers in banking are trained to treat it as a disqualifying answer.

Describe the work by type, volume, process and outcome instead. "Processed commercial deposits for eight retail merchants on a daily cycle" carries everything useful and identifies nobody.

Build a snapshot of your key skills

Ten to fourteen entries in three groups: transactions, compliance at the window, and systems. Name the core banking platform if you know one, because a branch that runs the same platform will read that as weeks of onboarding saved.

Adaptable resume skills example

Transactions: Cash and check deposits, Withdrawals and cashier's checks, Money orders, Negotiable instruments, Coin and currency ordering, Night drop and commercial deposits, Foreign currency requests

Compliance at the window: Regulation CC availability and holds, Customer identification and signature verification, Currency transaction report preparation, Suspicious activity referral, Dual control and vault counts, Counterfeit detection

Systems and equipment: Core banking platform, Teller capture and check imaging, Cash recycler and coin counter, ATM settlement, Branch scheduling software

Keep the skill list honest. If you have only prepared currency transaction report information and never filed one, write "prepared", not "filed". Banking interviews probe this, and the correction in the room is worse than the smaller claim on the page.

List your education and certifications

High school diploma or equivalent is the typical entry requirement for tellers, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook. Anything beyond that is a differentiator, so put it where it can be seen.

Adaptable resume education and certifications example

Associate of Applied Science, Business Administration, Pima Community College, Tucson, AZ, 2021

Notary Public, State of Arizona, commission through 2029

Bank Teller Certificate, American Bankers Association, 2023

Bank Secrecy Act and anti-money laundering training, completed annually, most recently 2026

Annual Bank Secrecy Act training is not optional at a bank: the anti-money laundering program rule at 31 CFR 1020.210 requires internal controls, independent testing, a designated compliance officer and training for appropriate personnel. Saying your training is current tells a hiring branch that you will not be starting from zero on day one.

Choose the right layout and design

Single column, 11 or 12 point serif or clean sans, clear headings, no photograph, no graphics, no skill bars. Bank applicant systems parse the file into a structured record before anyone reads it, and two columns and text boxes are where that breaks.

Save as PDF unless the portal asks for a Word file, and name it for yourself and the role: dariela-fonseca-bank-teller-resume.pdf.

Do

Give transactions a day and cash a day as real numbers. State your balancing record with both the numerator and the denominator. Name the compliance rules you apply at the window, at the level you actually apply them. Count your referrals and say how many converted. Name the core banking platform you know. Keep it to one page.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not write "handled cash accurately" and expect it to count. Do not claim a spotless multi-year record unless it is true and you can say the denominator. Do not put customer names, account numbers or balances anywhere. Do not list a compliance duty you have watched rather than performed. Do not pad with hobbies, and do not use a two-column template for a bank portal.

Bank teller job market and outlook

Tellers are a declining occupation, and pretending otherwise does nobody any good. The useful fact sits underneath the decline: turnover is high enough that the occupation still opens tens of thousands of jobs a year.

Statistical insight

A shrinking occupation that still hires 26,800 people a year

Employment of tellers is projected to decline 13 percent between 2025 and 2035, a loss of 44,700 jobs, yet about 26,800 teller openings are projected each year over the decade, nearly all of them from workers transferring to other occupations or leaving the labor force (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025 to 2035 projections).

The reason sits in how customers bank. In the 2023 FDIC National Survey of Unbanked and Underbanked Households, published 12 November 2024, 48.3 percent of banked households used mobile banking as their primary method of account access, and the FDIC noted that use of bank tellers as a primary method had fallen by more than half over the preceding decade.

Read those two findings together and the hiring picture is clear. Branches are handling fewer routine transactions, so windows are being consolidated, but the remaining window is doing harder work: exceptions, business deposits, identification, holds and referrals. Write your resume for that window, not for the one that existed in 2015.

Where the jobs sit:

SettingShare of employmentMedian annual wage, May 2025
Credit intermediation and related activities96 percent$42,920
Management of companies and enterprises1 percent$44,860

Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025.

That 96 percent figure matters for how you write. There is effectively one industry hiring tellers, which means every reader of your resume already knows the job. You gain nothing by explaining what a teller does and everything by saying how much of it you did.

What salary you can expect as a bank teller

The median annual wage for tellers was $43,030 as of May 2025, or $20.69 an hour. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $34,360 and the highest 10 percent more than $49,680 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).

That is an unusually narrow band. The top decile is only about 45 percent above the bottom decile, where in many occupations it is two or three times. Practically, it means no amount of excellence at the window will move your pay very far. Tellers who raise their earnings do it by moving, not by negotiating.

The Handbook says so directly: experienced tellers advance to head teller or supervisory positions, or move into related occupations such as loan officer. Loan officers had a median annual wage of $76,690 in May 2025, and personal financial advisors $105,070 in the same cycle (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025). Those are the doors the teller window opens.

So write the resume with the next job partly in view. Referral numbers, exception handling, vault and ordering responsibility and any training you have delivered are the lines that read as promotable. The transaction count gets you the teller interview; those lines get you the one after it.

Key takeaways for a bank teller resume

  1. Lead with the drawer record: volume, balancing days out of total days, and outage totals.
  2. Write the outages rather than claiming perfection, and say what you did about them.
  3. Name the compliance rules you apply at the window, at the level you actually apply them.
  4. Count your referrals and say how many converted; that is the line that reads as promotable.
  5. Name the core banking platform, the recycler and the capture system you have used.
  6. Never put a customer name, account number or balance anywhere near the file.
  7. Keep it to one page, single column and parseable, because a system reads it first.

Bank teller resume questions, answered

How long should a bank teller resume be?

One page. The job has a defined scope and a hiring manager reading applications between customers. Two pages only makes sense if you have several years as a head teller or vault custodian with supervisory numbers to show, and even then most of it should compress.

What do I put on a bank teller resume with no banking experience?

Cash handling under accountability, wherever you did it. A retail till with an end-of-shift count, a restaurant cash office, a box office, a pharmacy register. Write the volume, the count discipline and the shortage record exactly as a teller would: "counted a $2,400 drawer at open and close, six shifts a week, with three shortages totaling $18 across the year." Then add any identification checking, any money order or lottery handling, and any scheduling or key responsibility. Banks hire from retail constantly; they just want the retail written in banking terms.

How do I write about drawer outages without hurting my chances?

Give the denominator. "Balanced to the penny on 243 of 248 days, $61 in total outages, largest single outage $20, all found and documented before close" is a strong line, not a weak one. What hurts is either silence or a claim of perfection. Silence reads as a record you do not want to show, and perfection across years reads as unlikely to anyone who has run a branch.

Is bank teller still worth doing if the occupation is shrinking?

It depends what you want from it. Employment is projected to fall 13 percent between 2025 and 2035, but about 26,800 openings are still projected each year, and the Occupational Outlook Handbook describes the window as a route into head teller, supervisory and loan officer roles (BLS, 2025 to 2035 projections). As a long career at one window it is a shrinking bet. As the first two or three years of a banking career it remains one of the most reliable entry points there is, which is why the referral and exception lines on your resume matter more than the transaction count.

Can I list the amounts I handled for specific customers?

No. Customer names, account numbers, balances and individual transaction details never go on a resume, a cover letter or into an interview answer, and neither do documents taken from a bank system. Describe the work by type and volume instead: "processed daily commercial deposits for eight retail merchants." It says everything useful about the job and identifies nobody.

Which certifications actually help a bank teller?

A state notary commission is the most practical, because branches need one on site and it appears on the schedule. Beyond that, the American Bankers Association offers a bank teller certificate that signals the vocabulary if you are coming from outside banking. Current Bank Secrecy Act and anti-money laundering training is worth stating by year, since 31 CFR 1020.210 requires banks to train appropriate personnel and a candidate who is already current costs less to onboard.
