Summary
A copywriter resume is a one page document naming the channels you write, the brand voices you have carried, and the commercial result attached to your work. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the portfolio rules that decide most shortlists, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay for the occupations a copywriter is banded against.
Copywriter resume examples by experience level
A copywriter resume is a one page document that names the channels you write, the brand voices you have carried, and the commercial number that moved when your copy shipped.
That last part is what separates a copywriter from a writer. Nobody buys copy for its own sake. A hiring manager is looking at a paid search account that is not converting, an email program with a falling open rate, or a landing page that loses two thirds of its traffic above the fold. They are hiring someone who has moved one of those numbers before and can say by how much.
Resume guide for a copywriter resume
This guide and the corresponding copywriter resume example will cover:
- How to write a copywriter resume, section by section
- Why the brief, the channel and the test belong in every experience bullet
- Three adaptable summaries: junior, senior copywriter and copy lead
- What belongs in the portfolio the resume links to, and what quietly sinks it
- What the market looks like and what BLS says the surrounding occupations pay
How to write a copywriter resume
Six sections: contact header with a live portfolio link, summary, experience, selected work with results, skills, and education with certifications. One page until you are running a team.
The order is deliberate. The portfolio link sits in the header because it is the first thing a creative director clicks, and a resume that buries it costs you the click.
| Section | What it is answering | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Portfolio link | Can this person write, and is the link live? | Contact header, spelled out in full |
| Summary | Which channels, which categories, what scale? | Directly under the header |
| Experience | What did the copy do commercially? | Reverse chronological, a number per bullet |
| Selected work | Three pieces with brief, channel and result | Its own short block |
| Skills | Which stack can they work in tomorrow? | Grouped, not one long line |
Write the brief into the bullet, not just the output
A bullet that says "wrote email campaigns" tells a reader nothing. A bullet built on the brief tells them everything: what the business needed, what you shipped, what you tested it against, and what changed.
The shape is four parts. The brief, in five words. The channel. The test, if there was one. The number, with the period it covers.
"Rewrote the abandoned cart sequence for a home goods brand, testing two subject line families across 14,000 sends; open rate moved from 21% to 33% and recovered revenue per send rose 40% over one quarter."
If a piece of work has no number attached, it can still go on the page, but say what it was instead: the size of the brand voice guide you wrote, the number of SKUs you covered, the review cycle you got through.
Run the finished file through the ATS resume checker before you send it. Agency and in-house recruiting both sit on parsing software now.
Choosing the best resume format for a copywriter resume
Reverse chronological, one page. A copywriter's career reads as a sequence of brands and channels, and a creative director wants to see it in order: who you wrote for, at what scale, and for how long.
Functional formats fail badly here. They hide the one thing that cannot be faked, which is the run of accounts and the length of time on each. Freelance stretches are normal in this field and do not need hiding. Write them as a business with named channels and client categories.
Two columns and heavy graphic treatment are a trap. A portfolio is where design lives, and a designed resume from a copywriter reads as effort spent in the wrong place.

Write the portfolio URL out in full, and check it that morning. A dead portfolio link is the fastest rejection in this field, and it happens constantly because people leave a password on a staging site.
The title line under your name should say what kind of copywriter you are. Direct response, brand, lifecycle, performance, technical product marketing, and long form content are different jobs with different hiring managers.
Make use of a summary
Four lines: your channels, your categories, the scale you work at, and one commercial result with a number attached.
Copywriter with two years in-house at a direct-to-consumer home goods brand, writing email, paid social and product detail pages against a documented brand voice. Rewrote the abandoned cart sequence and moved open rate from 21% to 33% across 14,000 sends in one quarter. Work daily in a shared content calendar with design and lifecycle marketing, and run subject line tests through the email platform rather than sending on instinct.
Senior copywriter with seven years across agency and in-house work, covering direct response email, paid search, landing pages and long form brand campaigns for retail and subscription clients. Took a paid search account from a $54 cost per acquisition to $31 over eight months by rebuilding ad copy around one objection per ad group. Carry brand voice for three concurrent accounts and take copy through legal and compliance review without losing the argument.
Copy lead with 12 years in advertising and 4 managing a team of five writers inside a national outdoor apparel brand. Rebuilt the voice guide and the review process so copy reaches legal once rather than three times, which cut the average time from brief to live page from 19 days to 6. Own the testing roadmap with the growth team, and hire, brief and review the freelance bench that covers seasonal volume.
Right vs wrong: the same copywriter summary, twice
| ✅ Right | ❌ Wrong |
|---|---|
| Senior copywriter with seven years across agency and in-house work in retail and subscription. | Creative wordsmith with a love of storytelling and a knack for clever headlines. |
| Direct response email, paid search, landing pages and long form brand campaigns. | Experienced writing a wide variety of marketing materials. |
| Took a paid search account from a $54 cost per acquisition to $31 over eight months. | Consistently delivered high-performing copy that exceeded expectations. |
The right column can be put on an account tomorrow. The left column describes a personality, and a creative director reading sixty applications is not hiring a personality.
Outline your experience
Employer, city, your title, dates, and the categories you wrote for. Then three to five bullets. Every bullet carries a channel and a number, or a channel and a scale.
| Instead of | Use |
|---|---|
| Wrote engaging copy for social media | Wrote 40 paid social variants a month across three audiences, with the winning variant cutting cost per click from $1.84 to $1.12 |
| Created email marketing campaigns | Rebuilt the 6-email welcome series; click-through rose from 2.1% to 4.4% across 90,000 sends |
| Worked closely with the design team | Paired with design on 22 landing pages in a quarter, writing to a shared wireframe rather than into a blank document |
| Helped improve website conversion | Rewrote the pricing page around the three objections support logged most; trial starts rose 18% over six weeks |
| Maintained brand voice | Wrote the 14-page voice guide now used by five in-house writers and a freelance bench of nine |
| Produced content for various clients | Carried voice for three concurrent accounts in retail, subscription fitness and financial services |
Senior Copywriter, Northbeam Creative, Portland, OR, March 2018 to Present
Write direct response email, paid search, landing pages and campaign concepts for three concurrent accounts in retail, subscription fitness and financial services.
Took a retail client's paid search account from a $54 cost per acquisition to $31 over eight months by rebuilding ad copy around one objection per ad group and killing the variants that were winning clicks but not carts.
Rebuilt a 6-email welcome series for a subscription client; click-through rose from 2.1% to 4.4% across 90,000 sends over two quarters.
Wrote the 14-page voice guide for the financial services account and took every asset through compliance review, which cut the average number of legal review rounds per campaign from three to one.
Brief and review four freelance writers on seasonal volume, including rate negotiation and scope.
Name the category, not the client, if your contract says so. "A national subscription fitness brand" is specific enough to be useful and does not put you in breach of a non-disclosure agreement.
Build a portfolio that proves the number, not the copy
The portfolio is the hiring gate in this field. The resume gets you the click; the portfolio gets you the call. Most portfolios fail for the same reason, which is that they show finished artwork and say nothing about what it was for.
Six to eight pieces is right. Ten is a lot, and twenty says you cannot choose. Each piece needs four things on the page with it.
Brief: the home goods brand was recovering under 4% of abandoned carts, and the existing three-email sequence had not been touched in two years.
What I wrote: a rebuilt 4-email sequence, with two subject line families tested against each other, and a rewritten first email that led with the delivery guarantee instead of a discount.
Constraint: no discounting was allowed in the first two emails, and every claim about delivery timing had to survive a review by the operations team.
Result: open rate moved from 21% to 33% across 14,000 sends, and recovered revenue per send rose 40% over one quarter.
Four rules that decide whether a portfolio survives a first pass:
- Show the piece as it shipped, not as a mockup. A screenshot of the live email or page beats a composition in a design file.
- Say what you wrote and what someone else wrote. Creative directors can tell, and claiming a whole campaign you contributed three headlines to is the single fastest way to lose a job you were otherwise getting.
- Include one piece that failed, with what you learned. It is rare, it is credible, and it signals that you read results rather than only writing.
- Keep one long form and one short form piece in every version. A page of headlines with no argument underneath makes a reader wonder whether you can build one.
If you cannot show client work, write spec work against a real brief and label it clearly as spec. Unlabeled spec work presented as shipped is a reference-check problem waiting to happen.
Say how your copy gets through legal, because that is half the job
In regulated categories the constraint is not creativity, it is what you are allowed to claim. Financial services, health, supplements, insurance and anything sold to children all go through a review that will send copy back.
Commercial email is the clearest example of a rule a copywriter has to write inside. The Federal Trade Commission's CAN-SPAM compliance guide sets out eight requirements for commercial email, including honest header information and subject lines, identifying the message as an advertisement, giving a valid physical postal address, and a working opt-out honored promptly. Each separate email in violation is subject to a penalty of up to $53,088 (Federal Trade Commission, published August 2023, penalty amount updated January 2024).
A copywriter who can say "I write to substantiation, I know which claims need a source and I take copy through legal in one round rather than three" is worth real money to a brand that has been burned. Put it on the resume as a number of review rounds, not as a personality trait.
Build a snapshot of your key skills
Twelve to fifteen entries in four groups: the writing itself, the channels, the measurement, and the tools. Split them, because a creative director reads the first group and a growth lead reads the second and third.
Writing: Direct response, Brand voice development, Long form landing pages, Headline and subject line testing, Product detail copy, Script writing for short video
Channels: Lifecycle email, Paid search, Paid social, SEO landing pages, Display, Out of home
Measurement: A/B and multivariate test design, Conversion rate analysis, Cost per acquisition, Open and click-through rate, Message and objection mapping
Tools and process: Figma, Google Analytics, Klaviyo, Contentful, Jira, Asana, brand voice guides, legal and compliance review
Grouping matters more than skill levels. A hiring manager is scanning for whether your stack overlaps theirs enough that you are productive in week one.
List your education and certifications
Degree, institution, year. Then certifications, then any writing training that is genuinely specific. Keep this section short; nobody in advertising hires on a degree.
Bachelor of Arts, Journalism, University of Oregon, Eugene, OR, 2014
Certifications: Professional Certified Marketer, Digital Marketing, American Marketing Association (2020). Google Analytics Certification, Google (2025, renewed annually).
Additional: Advertising copy workshop, 12-week evening program, 2016. Ongoing reading of the FTC's business guidance on advertising claims and endorsements.
If you came into copywriting from journalism, teaching, law, nursing or a trade, say so in one line. Hiring managers in health, legal and financial copy actively look for that category knowledge.
Choose the right layout and design
Single column, 10 or 11 point body type, generous margins, clear headings, no photograph, no skills bar charts. Save the PDF with your name and the role in the filename.
Put the portfolio URL in the header, written out and live. Name the channels you write, not "marketing materials". Give a number and a time period in most bullets. Say which parts of a campaign were yours. Name the categories you have written for even when the client has to stay anonymous. Keep it to one page until you are managing writers.
Do not design the resume; the portfolio is where design belongs. Do not list every brand you have ever touched in a one-line client soup. Do not claim a result you cannot explain in an interview, because you will be asked how it was measured. Do not use "wordsmith", "storyteller" or "guru" as a job title. Do not send a portfolio link behind a password without the password in the same line.
Copywriter job market and outlook
The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes no Occupational Outlook Handbook profile for copywriter. The Handbook covers broad occupations rather than job titles, and copywriting sits inside one of them: the writers and authors profile states that copy writers prepare advertisements to promote the sale of a good or service.
The honest way to read the market is to bracket the role between the published occupations it sits between: writers and authors, where the work is classified; public relations specialists, the adjacent communications hire; and advertising, promotions and marketing managers, which is where a copy lead's band is set.
| Bracketing occupation | Employment, 2025 | Projected change, 2025 to 2035 | Annual openings | Median annual wage, May 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Writers and authors | 140,300 | 0 percent, little or no change | ~11,900 | $76,910 |
| Public relations specialists | 314,500 | 2 percent growth | ~23,000 | $74,750 |
| Advertising, promotions and marketing managers | 454,800 | 6 percent growth | ~36,300 | $165,780 |
Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025 wage data and 2025 to 2035 projections, last modified 27 August 2026.
Most of the occupation is self-employed, which changes what a resume is for
Self-employed workers are the largest single share of employment for writers and authors at 65 percent, ahead of professional, scientific and technical services at 9 percent and information at 8 percent (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025).
Employment in the occupation is projected to change by 0 percent between 2025 and 2035, a decline of about 500 jobs, while still producing roughly 11,900 openings a year, almost all of them replacements (BLS, 2025 to 2035 projections).
Read together, those two facts describe the market a copywriter competes in. Salaried in-house and agency posts are a minority of the work and they are not growing, so the openings that exist are replacement seats with heavy application volume. When the pool is full of people who can all write, the shortlist is decided by who can show what their writing did.
Where the work sits also moves the money. Within writers and authors, religious, grantmaking, civic and professional organizations paid a median of $80,480 in May 2025, professional, scientific and technical services $77,860, information $74,590 and educational services $72,610 (BLS, May 2025).
What salary you can expect as a copywriter
There is no published median for the job title copywriter, and quoting one would mean inventing it. What can be said accurately is where the occupation it belongs to sits.
Writers and authors had a median annual wage of $76,910 in May 2025, or $36.98 an hour, with the lowest 10 percent under $44,310 and the highest 10 percent over $139,870 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025). Public relations specialists, the closest adjacent communications occupation, had a median of $74,750 in the same cycle.
At the top of the ladder the band changes character. A copy lead or creative director with budget and team responsibility is banded with advertising, promotions and marketing managers, whose combined median was $165,780 in May 2025, made up of $133,660 for advertising and promotions managers and $166,790 for marketing managers (BLS, May 2025).
Three things move you inside that spread. The first is channel: direct response and performance copy is paid better than general brand copy because the result is visible. The second is category. Regulated categories pay a premium for writers who can get through review, and technical categories pay for writers who understand the product. The third is whether you own a number. A writer who is measured on cost per acquisition or on revenue per send is in a different conversation from one who is measured on volume of copy delivered.
Key takeaways for a copywriter resume
- Put a live portfolio URL in the header, written out in full, and check it that day.
- Name the kind of copywriter you are: direct response, brand, lifecycle, performance or long form.
- Build every experience bullet from the brief, the channel, the test and the number.
- Name categories rather than clients when your contract requires it, and keep the specificity.
- Say who wrote what, because inflated credit is caught in the first conversation.
- Show that you can get copy through legal or compliance, counted in review rounds.
- Keep the resume plain and single column; the design work belongs in the portfolio.

Copywriter resume questions, answered
How long should a copywriter resume be?
One page, until you are managing writers or running a department. Copywriting resumes are read fast and next to a portfolio, so the document's job is to route the reader to the work with enough context to make the click worth it. Two pages is defensible for a copy lead with a team, a budget and a testing roadmap.
Do I need a portfolio if my resume is strong?
Yes, and it is the harder gate of the two. Almost no copywriting job is offered without someone reading your work first. Six to eight pieces, each with the brief, the constraint, what you wrote and what happened, will beat a larger gallery of finished artwork with no context attached.
What do I put on a copywriter resume with no agency experience?
Write what you have actually shipped. Copy for a small business, a newsletter with a subscriber count, product descriptions for a marketplace seller, a rewritten donation page for a volunteer group. Give the number wherever one exists. Then add two or three clearly labeled spec pieces written against real briefs, and say what you would test.
Should I list clients by name?
Only if your contract allows it and the client would not object. Otherwise write the category and the scale: "a national subscription fitness brand, 400,000 subscribers" carries almost all of the useful information and none of the risk. Agencies in particular take client confidentiality seriously and will notice if you do not.
How do I show results when nothing was tested?
Say so, and give scale instead. Number of SKUs covered, length of the voice guide you wrote, number of writers who work from it, review rounds saved, pages shipped in a quarter, languages the copy was adapted into. Scale is a real fact. An invented percentage is the one thing a hiring manager can catch in an interview.
Is copywriting a shrinking field?
The occupation it belongs to is flat rather than shrinking. BLS projects employment of writers and authors to change by 0 percent between 2025 and 2035, a fall of about 500 jobs, while still generating roughly 11,900 openings a year (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025 to 2035 projections). The composition matters more than the total: 65 percent of the occupation is self-employed, so most of the work is contracted rather than salaried.
