Summary

A one-year experience resume is a one page document that treats twelve months of work as a record rather than an apology. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the rule for turning a bullet into a section when the page is thin, what drops off the moment your first year is done, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics figures on how long people actually stay in a job.

One-Year Experience resume examples by experience level

A one-year experience resume is a one page document covering roughly twelve months of paid work, written as evidence rather than as an apology for how short it is.

Of course, the instinct at this stage is to pad: a longer objective, a coursework list, an interests line, adjectives doing the work numbers should do. The better move is the opposite. However, one year of real work, described with volumes and dates, fills a page perfectly well once you stop hiding the fact that it is one year.

Resume guide for a one year experience resume

To start, this guide and the corresponding one year experience resume example will cover:

  • First, how to write a one year experience resume, section by section
  • How to fill a page honestly when the record is twelve months long
  • Then, three adaptable summaries: ten months, two years and team lead
  • Also, what comes off the page the moment your first year is done
  • Finally, what the data says about tenure, and why one year is normal

How to write a one year experience resume

In short, five sections: contact header, summary, experience, education, and skills. In general, one page, and it will stay one page for several more years.

The header is where most of these files lose a reader. "Recent graduate seeking an entry-level opportunity" says you have nothing; "IT Support Analyst, 1,400 tickets resolved" says you have a year and here is what it contained.

SectionWhat it is answeringWhere it goes
Header and title lineWhat is this person's job, and at what volume?Top, the posting's own title
SummaryWhat have they done for twelve months, and how much of it?Under the header, three lines
ExperienceWhat did they own, and how often did they do it?Reverse chronological, volume in every bullet
EducationDo they clear a stated requirement?Below experience, one or two lines
Skills and certificationsWhich named systems could they be tested on?Short block, with certification dates
Expert Tip

Volume and cadence are what you have instead of years

A candidate with eight years has trajectory to show: what they were promoted into, what they rebuilt, who they trained. You do not have that yet, and pretending otherwise is transparent.

What you do have is throughput. In twelve months you handled a countable number of things at a countable rate, and that number is usually larger than you think. Tickets closed a month. Accounts covered. Shifts worked. Patients roomed. Releases shipped. Calls taken and the share resolved without escalation.

Count it before you write. Pull the actual figure out of the ticketing system, the roster or the point of sale report rather than estimating, because the interview will ask and a number you cannot defend is worse than no number. "Roughly 320 tickets a month, first-contact resolution at 71%" is a year of work made visible in eleven words.

Run the finished file through the ATS resume checker before you send it. Short histories parse badly when people compensate with unusual layouts.

Choosing the best resume format for a one year experience resume

As a rule, reverse chronological, one page, no exceptions worth making. After all, your history is short enough that the order takes three seconds to read, which is exactly the situation the format is built for.

Meanwhile, functional formats are marketed to people in your position on the theory that they hide a thin record. They do not hide it. Instead, they announce it, because a reader whose first question is "how long have they been doing this" now has to hunt for the answer, and hunting makes people suspicious.

If your twelve months came in two jobs rather than one, list both, with months. Two short roles is a fact about the last year, not a flaw to be smoothed over, and a reader who sees a clean date sequence stops thinking about it.

CompTIA A+ certified, 2025Various IT certifications

Put the certification on the header line if you have one. In fact, at this stage it is frequently the strongest single fact you own, and burying it at the bottom of page one wastes it.

Leave the objective statement off entirely. In other words, it tells the reader what you want, in a document whose only job is to tell them what they get.

Make use of a summary

Three lines: your job and how long you have done it, the volume, and one thing that changed because you were there.

Ten months adaptable resume summary example

IT support analyst with 10 months on a managed service provider's service desk, handling roughly 320 tickets a month across 14 client sites and holding first-contact resolution at 71%. Rewrote the 9 most-used knowledge base articles after finding they were the source of a third of repeat tickets; repeat volume on those issues fell 24% over the following quarter. CompTIA A+ certified, working toward Network+.

Two years adaptable resume summary example

Systems support specialist with 2 years at a managed service provider, currently owning endpoint management for 640 devices across 14 client sites. Cut average ticket age from 19 hours to 11 by triaging at intake rather than in the queue, and built the onboarding runbook now used for every new client. CompTIA A+ and Network+ certified, with Microsoft 365 administration as the day-to-day environment.

Team lead adaptable resume summary example

IT support team lead with 6 years in managed services and 2 leading a service desk of 7 covering 31 client sites and roughly 2,400 tickets a month. Took first-contact resolution from 63% to 79% across the team by rebuilding intake triage and the knowledge base together. Hire and review the desk, run the on-call rotation, and have trained 4 analysts into specialist roles.

The right column is four checkable facts written by someone who has been working for less than a year. Nothing in it requires seniority. It requires having counted.

Outline your experience

For each role, give employer, city and state, your title, and dates by month and year. Then four or five bullets, because with one job on the page each bullet has to carry more.

IT Support Analyst, Tamarack Systems Group, Columbus, OH, November 2025 to Present

Managed service provider covering 14 small and mid-sized client sites, roughly 1,900 users.

Own the 7am opening shift four days a week, triaging the overnight queue before the desk opens.

How to fill a page when you have one year

The page is not thin because your year was thin. Instead, it is thin because a year gets written as five bullets when it contains five sections' worth of material.

Promote a bullet into a section. Anything you did repeatedly, or anything you were the only person doing, is a section rather than a line. The knowledge base rewrite above is a bullet in most versions of this resume; if it was a month of your work and it changed a number, it can be its own block with a heading like "Documentation project" and three lines under it. One year gives you one or two of these, and one or two is enough.

Write scope as volume and cadence. Every role has a rate. Find yours and put it in the first bullet of the entry.

Kind of workThe volume and cadence line
Service desk or help deskTickets a month, first-contact resolution, shifts covered
Retail or hospitalityShifts a week, transactions or covers a shift, register variance
Warehouse or logisticsUnits picked or orders processed an hour, accuracy rate
Accounts and adminInvoices or records processed a week, error rate, close cadence
Care and clinical supportPatients or residents a shift, ratio, documentation turnaround
Development and engineeringReleases or pull requests a month, on-call weeks, incidents handled

What to cut after your first year

Use the student and pre-career material, once. A capstone, a campus job, a certification, a volunteer role with a budget or a headcount. Each gets two lines at most, and each has to be doing work the professional year cannot do on its own.

Know what comes off. This is the part almost nobody does, and it is what separates a one-year resume from a graduate resume that has aged badly.

Drops offWhen
Relevant courseworkThe day you have twelve months of paid work in the field
GPATwo years after conferral, or immediately if it was not strong
High schoolImmediately, unless it is your highest completed education
Campus club membership with no role attachedImmediately
Objective statementIt should never have been there
Interests and hobbiesUnless one is genuinely relevant to the work
An unpaid internship from three years agoOnce a paid role covers the same ground

As a result, cutting those four or five lines is what makes room for the volume figures, and the trade is always worth making. That is why a page that reads as a working person's resume beats a page that reads as a student's resume with a job stapled to the top.

Statistical insight

One year is a much more common position than it feels

Median employee tenure with a current employer was 3.9 years as of January 2024, and 22 percent of all wage and salary workers had been with their employer for a year or less (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Employee Tenure in 2024, released 26 September 2024).

The figure is lower for people early in a career. Workers aged 25 to 34 had a median tenure of 2.7 years, against 9.6 years for workers aged 55 to 64. Tenure also splits sharply by sector: 6.2 years in the public sector against 3.5 years in the private sector (same release, January 2024 reference date).

Read that as permission to stop apologizing. Roughly one worker in five is in their first year somewhere, and a recruiter has seen thousands of twelve-month entries. What they have not seen is a twelve-month entry with a throughput number in it, and that is the whole difference.

Build a snapshot of your key skills

For skills, list eight to twelve named entries in two or three groups. Name only things you could be asked about in the interview, because at one year of experience you will be asked.

Adaptable resume skills example

Systems: Microsoft 365 administration, Active Directory, Microsoft Intune, Windows 11 deployment, ConnectWise ticketing, Meraki dashboard

Support: Ticket triage and escalation, Remote and on-site desktop support, Account provisioning and deprovisioning, Knowledge base writing, VPN and MFA troubleshooting

Certifications in progress: CompTIA Network+, expected March 2027

Also, say what is in progress and give a date. For example, a named certification with an exam date is a commitment; "studying for certifications" is not.

List your education and certifications

One or two lines. For education, give degree or program, institution, city and state, year. Then certifications with the issuing body and the date they were earned.

Adaptable resume education and certifications example

Associate of Applied Science, Information Technology Support, Columbus State Community College, Columbus, OH, 2025

Certifications: CompTIA A+, CompTIA, earned June 2025. Microsoft 365 Certified: Fundamentals, Microsoft, earned September 2025. CompTIA Network+ in progress, exam booked March 2027.

Once your paid year is on the page, then, education drops to these two lines and stays there. Similarly, the coursework list, the honors society and the GPA were useful on the resume that got you this job, and they have done their work.

Choose the right layout and design

As for layout, single column, one typeface at 10.5 to 12 point, month and year dates, no photograph, no skills rating bars. Keep it to one page, and resist the urge to stretch margins or font size to fill it: a short page reads as confident, a padded one reads as padded.

Do

Put a volume number in the first bullet of your one job. Use month and year dates so the twelve months are visible and unambiguous. Promote your single biggest piece of work into its own short section. State certifications with dates, including ones in progress with an exam date. Cut coursework, GPA and high school once the paid year exists. Keep the whole thing to one page.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not write "entry-level" or "junior" in your own header unless the posting does. Do not apologize for the length of your experience anywhere on the page. Do not list a technology you have only read about. Do not use a functional format to disguise a short history. Do not pad with an interests section, a quotation, or a skills block full of adjectives.

One year experience job market and outlook

Notably, there is no Bureau of Labor Statistics employment level, growth projection or median wage for "one year of experience", because it describes a stage rather than an occupation. What BLS does publish is how long people stay in jobs, and that is the useful context for a twelve-month record.

MeasureValue
Median tenure with current employer, all wage and salary workers, January 20243.9 years
Share of wage and salary workers with a year or less of tenure, January 202422 percent
Median tenure, workers aged 25 to 34, January 20242.7 years
Median tenure, workers aged 55 to 64, January 20249.6 years
Median tenure, public sector against private sector, January 20246.2 years against 3.5 years
Median annual wage, all occupations, May 2025$50,980

Sources: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Employee Tenure in 2024, released 26 September 2024, reference date January 2024; BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025 wage data published 27 August 2026. The tenure survey is biennial, so January 2024 is the most recent published cycle.

Two things follow. A twelve-month entry is unremarkable to the people reading it, so the page should not be written as though it needs a defense. And the median of 3.9 years means the reader's real question is not why your record is short, but whether you are going to stay: an entry that shows progression inside twelve months, a certification earned on the job, or a project you volunteered for, answers that better than any sentence about commitment.

What salary you can expect with one year of experience

Therefore, there is no salary for "one year of experience". Instead, the number depends entirely on the occupation, and the occupation is the thing to look up.

For orientation only, the median annual wage across all occupations was $50,980 in May 2025 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025 wage data published 27 August 2026). That is a median across the whole workforce at every level of seniority, so it is neither a floor nor a target for you.

In addition, educational attainment moves the population figures too. In 2025, full-time workers aged 25 and over with a bachelor's degree had median usual weekly earnings of $1,578 and an unemployment rate of 2.8 percent; those with an associate degree $1,135 and 3.0 percent; those with some college and no degree $1,062 and 3.8 percent (BLS, unemployment rates and earnings by educational attainment, 2025 data, table last modified 1 September 2026). BLS notes the 2025 estimates are 11-month averages that exclude October because of a federal government shutdown.

What actually moves your own number at this stage is narrow and concrete: a certification the employer would otherwise have to pay for, a system you already administer, a shift nobody wants, and a volume figure that shows you can carry the load from week one. Those are the things worth naming when the conversation gets to money, and they are all on the page already if you wrote it the way this guide describes.

Key takeaways for a one year experience resume

  1. In practice, put a volume and cadence number in the first bullet of your one job.
  2. Next, use month and year dates and let the twelve months be visible.
  3. Above all, promote your biggest single piece of work into its own short section.
  4. Cut coursework, GPA and high school once the paid year exists.
  5. Name certifications with dates, including ones in progress with an exam date.
  6. Likewise, never apologize for the length of the record anywhere on the page.
  7. Keep it reverse chronological and keep it to one page.

One-year experience resume questions, answered

How long should a resume be with one year of experience?

One page. It will stay one page for several years yet. If you cannot fill it, the fix is more detail on the job you have rather than more sections: the volume, the systems, the shift pattern, the one project you owned. If you are overflowing, cut the coursework and the GPA first.

Should I still include my degree and coursework?

The degree, yes, as one line. The coursework list, no, once you have twelve months of paid work in the field. Coursework is a substitute for work experience, and you now have work experience, so keeping both signals that you do not think the job counted.

Is one year of experience enough to apply for a mid-level job?

Sometimes, and the way to find out is to read the posting's first three requirements rather than the years figure in the headline. Years are a proxy for the things listed underneath. If you can evidence four of five actual requirements with volume numbers, apply. If you can evidence one, the application is not a good use of the hour.

How do I describe a job I have only had for ten months?

By what it contained rather than how long it lasted. Give the monthly or weekly volume, the systems you use, the shift or coverage you own, and one thing that changed because you were there. Ten months described that way reads longer than two years described as duties.

What if my year was split across two jobs?

List both with months, in order, and let the dates speak. Two short roles inside a year is common and a reader mainly wants to see that the sequence is continuous and explained. If one of them ended because a contract finished or a site closed, say so in four words inside the entry.

When do I stop calling myself entry level?

Around the point you stop writing it, which for most people is the day the first year closes. The label is self-applied and it costs you: a reader who sees "entry level" in your header will price the application that way. Use the job title you actually hold instead, and let the dates give the context.
