Summary
A part time job resume is a one page document whose most important section is the one most applicants leave off: when you can actually work. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, an availability grid you can copy, the federal hour limits that apply to workers under 18, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics figures on how many people work part time.
Part Time Job resume examples by experience level
A part time job resume is a one page document that says what you can do and, just as importantly, when you can be there.
However, the second half is where most of these resumes fail. After all, a manager filling part-time hours is not choosing the strongest candidate in the abstract. They are holding a schedule with specific holes in it: Thursday evenings, the Sunday opening shift, two weekday mornings, and cover for whoever calls out. The applicant who fills four of those holes beats the one who fills one, and the resume that does not say which holes it fills beats nobody, because the manager has to call and ask.
Resume guide for a part time job resume
To start, this guide and the corresponding part time job resume example will cover:
- First, how to write a part time job resume, section by section
- How to build an availability grid and where to put it
- Then, three adaptable summaries: first job, experienced part-timer and shift lead
- The federal hour limits that apply if you are under 18, and state work permits
- What the data says about part-time work and what you can expect to be paid
How to write a part time job resume
In short, five sections: contact header, availability, summary, experience, and education with skills. As a rule, one page, and it should stay well inside one page. The order is the point: availability goes high, not at the foot under "additional information", because it is what the reader screens on.
| Section | What it is answering | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Can this person cover the shifts I actually need? | Directly under the contact header |
| Summary | What can they do, and how much of it have they done? | Two or three lines, under availability |
| Experience | What did they handle, at what volume, on which shifts? | Reverse chronological, with numbers |
| Education and skills | Do they clear any stated requirement, and what can they be trained on quickly? | Short block at the foot |
Say yes to something specific before you are asked
Managers hiring part-time staff are solving a coverage problem, and the shifts they struggle to fill are predictable: the opening shift, the closing shift, and Sunday.
If you can work any of those, name them. "Available to open weekends and to close Thursday and Friday" is a more useful sentence than any adjective you could put in its place, and it takes a reader about one second to match against the gap they are trying to fill.
If you cannot work them, still name what you can. A clear no is worth more than a vague yes, because the cost of a bad part-time hire is the schedule falling over in week three. A resume honest about a Tuesday class reads as someone who will still be there in month six.
Run the finished file through the ATS resume checker before you apply. Retail, grocery and hospitality employers parse applications into a hiring system before a manager sees them.
Choosing the best resume format for a part time job resume
Reverse chronological, one page, single column. Whatever your history looks like, the reader still wants the sequence and the dates.
If your history is several short jobs, list them with months and let the dates work. Seasonal, casual and term-time roles are normal here and nobody expects a straight line. What a manager looks for is whether you left in a way that suggests you would be rehired, so if a job ended because a season closed or a term started, say so in four words inside the entry.
With no paid history the page still works. Volunteer shifts, a campus role with a rota, family responsibilities with fixed hours and a certification are all evidence that you turn up when you say you will, which is the trait being purchased.

For example, "flexible availability" is the most common line on a part-time resume and it means nothing, because every applicant writes it and half of them turn out to have a Tuesday class. In other words, specific hours are believable; flexibility is not.
Make use of a summary
Two or three lines: what you have done, at what volume, and the shift pattern you carried.
Reliable part-time worker with 10 months on a cinema concessions and box office team, covering 14 to 18 hours a week across Friday evenings, Saturdays and Sunday openings. Handled a register averaging 180 transactions a shift with under $2 in variance across the period, and trained two new starters on the popcorn and drink stations. Part-time front end associate with 3 years in grocery retail, working 28 hours a week across four shifts including two openings. Run a register, the self-checkout bank and the customer service desk, averaging 320 transactions a shift and handling returns, lottery and money orders. Opened the store 90 times in the last year, and hold a current Food Handler card and the store's alcohol server certification.
Part-time store supervisor with 6 years in grocery retail and 2 as a keyholder, working 32 hours a week and building the weekly schedule for 22 associates across a 90-hour trading week. Cut unplanned overtime by 41 percent in a year by rebuilding the shift pattern around the two peaks rather than around seniority, and reduced call-out gaps by starting a standing cover list. Open or close as required and hold keys and alarm codes.
Right vs wrong: the same part time job summary, twice
| ✅ Right | ❌ Wrong |
|---|---|
| Part-time front end associate with 3 years in grocery retail, working 28 hours a week. | Hard-working and reliable individual seeking a part-time position. |
| Four shifts a week including two openings; opened the store 90 times last year. | Flexible availability and willing to work any shift. |
| Averaging 320 transactions a shift across register, self-checkout and the service desk. | Experience in customer service and cash handling. |
| Food Handler card and alcohol server certification current. | Various certifications and training completed. |
By contrast, every line in the right column is something a manager can act on this week, and none of it requires a career.
Outline your experience
Employer, city and state, your title, dates by month and year, then the hours you worked and three or four bullets. The hours line is unusual and it belongs here: "22 hours a week, Thursday to Sunday" says more about your reliability than a sentence about work ethic.
| Instead of | Use |
|---|---|
| Worked as a cashier | Ran a register averaging 320 transactions a shift, with under $2 variance across the year |
| Provided excellent customer service | Handled returns, exchanges, lottery and money orders at the customer service desk |
| Worked flexible shifts as needed | Opened the store 90 times in the last year and covered 31 call-out shifts at short notice |
Front End Associate, Sawtooth Market Co-op, Boise, ID, June 2023 to Present
Part-time, 28 hours a week across four shifts including two 6am openings.
Run register, the six-lane self-checkout bank and the customer service desk, averaging about 320 transactions a shift.
Opened the store 90 times in the last year, which covers till floats, the morning cash drop, produce and bakery receiving, and getting the front end ready before the doors unlock.
Handle returns, exchanges, lottery, money orders and price overrides; hold the store's alcohol server certification and check identification at the register.
Covered 31 call-out shifts at short notice over the year, trained 6 new starters, and have three years with no unplanned absence and no late start.
Write your availability as a grid, because part-time hiring is scheduling
In fact, part-time hiring is a scheduling decision wearing the clothes of a hiring decision. The manager has a rota with gaps and a labor budget, so everything they want from your resume is an input to that rota. So give it to them as a grid. It takes six lines and almost nobody writes it.
Availability
Monday: 4pm to close. Tuesday: not available (class 5pm to 8pm). Wednesday: 4pm to close. Thursday: 4pm to close. Friday: all day. Saturday: all day, can open. Sunday: all day, can open.
Earliest start date: 6 October 2026
Can open: yes, from 6am. Can close: yes, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Weekend availability: both days, every week
Blackout dates: 18 to 22 December 2026 (booked travel). No other planned absence.
Notice to current employer: one week
Six things belong in it, each answering a question the manager would otherwise ask on the phone.
Days and hours, written as times. Not "mornings" or "after school", which mean different things to different people. "4pm to close" is a fact; "afternoons and evenings" is a negotiating position.
Whether you can open and whether you can close. These are the two hardest shifts to fill in almost every part-time workplace, and the two that carry responsibility: opening means cash handling and receiving, closing means cash-up and locking. Saying yes to either puts you in a smaller pile.
Start dates, weekends and blackout dates
Your earliest start date. A manager filling a gap next week will take a slightly weaker candidate who starts on Monday over a stronger one who starts in a month. If you can start immediately, put it in writing.
Weekend coverage, by frequency. "Both days, every week" and "one day most weeks" are different offers. Say which you are making.
Blackout dates. Booked travel, exam weeks, a term that starts. Listing them looks like a cost and is the opposite: it tells a manager your availability is real rather than aspirational, and it prevents the argument in week four that ends part-time jobs.
Notice, if you are working now. One line.
Part-time job rules for workers under 18
If you are under 18, the hours are set by law, not by you. Federal rules constrain what a manager can schedule you for, and knowing them makes you easier to hire rather than harder.
Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, children under 14 may not be employed in non-agricultural occupations covered by the Act. Workers aged 14 and 15 may work outside school hours only, and no more than 3 hours on a school day including Fridays, 8 hours on a non-school day, 18 hours in a week when school is in session and 40 hours in a week when it is not, and only between 7am and 7pm, except between 1 June and Labor Day when the evening hour extends to 9pm. Workers aged 16 and 17 may work unlimited hours in any occupation other than those the Secretary of Labor has declared hazardous, and once a worker turns 18 the federal youth employment provisions no longer apply (U.S. Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division, Fact Sheet #43, Child Labor Provisions for Nonagricultural Occupations, revised December 2016).
State work permits and your resume
In addition, state law sits on top of that and is often stricter. Most states require a minor to hold an employment or age certificate, commonly called a work permit, usually issued by the school or the state labor department; the Department of Labor publishes a state-by-state table of issuance practice with a reference date of 1 January 2024 and notes that it does not administer state laws (U.S. Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division, Employment/Age Certificate table, reference date 1 January 2024).
Two consequences for the resume. If you hold a work permit, say so in one line, because it removes a step from onboarding. And if you are 14 or 15, write availability inside the legal window: a grid offering a 9pm finish in February tells a manager you do not know the rules they are audited against.
Build a snapshot of your key skills
Eight to twelve named entries in two groups: the systems you have operated, and the tasks you have been trusted with. Also skip the adjectives, because the availability grid has already made the reliability argument better than "punctual" can.
Systems and equipment: NCR and Toshiba point of sale, self-checkout bank monitoring, handheld price scanner and label printer, scheduling software, card and contactless payment terminals
Tasks trusted with: Opening and closing procedures, till float and cash drop, returns and exchanges, price overrides, age-restricted sales and identification checks, receiving and putaway, stock rotation and date checks
Certifications: Food Handler card, alcohol server certification, first aid
List your education and certifications
Two or three lines. School or program, city and state, and the year you finished or expect to. Then certifications with the issuing body and the date, because in part-time hiring a current card often beats a qualification.
Associate of Arts, in progress, College of Western Idaho, Nampa, ID, expected 2027. Classes Tuesday evenings only.
High School Diploma, Boise, ID, 2022
Certifications: Idaho Food Handler card, valid through March 2027. Alcohol server certification, earned 2024. Adult and pediatric first aid and CPR, American Red Cross, earned 2025.
Next, note the class schedule written into the education line. That way, one clause connects your education to your availability and saves the reader from working it out.
Choose the right layout and design
Single column, 10.5 to 12 point, month and year dates, no photograph. Put the availability block in plain text rather than a table image or a graphic calendar, because hiring systems parse text and discard pictures.
Put availability directly under your contact details, written as days and times. Say whether you can open and whether you can close. Give an earliest start date. State blackout dates and the class or commitment behind them. Write your weekly hours into each job entry. Name the certification you hold with its expiry. Keep it to one page and keep it plain text.
Do not write "flexible availability" and leave it there. Do not offer hours you cannot sustain in week six. Do not hide a fixed weekly commitment and hope the schedule works around it. Do not describe yourself as hard-working, reliable or punctual; show it with the absence record and the shifts covered. Do not send the same availability block to an employer whose trading hours you have not checked.
Part time job market and outlook
Notably, there is no Bureau of Labor Statistics employment level, growth projection or median wage for "a part time job", because part-time is a schedule rather than an occupation. The Fair Labor Standards Act does not define full-time or part-time employment either; the Department of Labor states plainly that this "is a matter generally to be determined by the employer" (U.S. Department of Labor, Full-Time Employment topic page). What BLS does publish is how many people work part time and why, and that is the useful context.

Most part-time work is chosen, and that changes who you are competing with
Of the 27,142,000 people at work part time in August 2026, 22,752,000 were part time for noneconomic reasons and 4,390,000 for economic reasons, meaning they wanted full-time hours and could not get them (BLS, The Employment Situation, August 2026, Table A-8, released 4 September 2026).
The economic-reasons group fell by 414,000 over the month, to 4.4 million, while the overall unemployment rate held at 4.1 percent and the teenage unemployment rate edged up to 14.1 percent (BLS, The Employment Situation, August 2026, released 4 September 2026).
Read the first figure as the shape of the competition. Roughly five in six part-time workers are there on purpose, around a class schedule, a caring responsibility, a second job or a retirement, and a manager knows it. A resume that reads as someone waiting for something better is at a disadvantage against one that says, in specific hours, what it is offering.
What pay you can expect in a part time job
Similarly, there is no median wage for "a part time job", because the pay is set by the occupation, the employer and the state, not by the schedule. Part-time status also does not change how the Fair Labor Standards Act applies to you (U.S. Department of Labor, Full-Time Employment topic page).
The floor is the one number that is fixed. The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, effective 24 July 2009, and where a state sets a higher minimum the employer must comply with both, so the higher rate is the one that applies (U.S. Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division, Minimum Wage page). Look up your own state before you discuss pay: in much of the country the state figure is the real one.
Above the floor, therefore, what moves a part-time rate is narrow and all of it is schedule-shaped. A shift differential for opening, closing, overnight or Sunday work. For instance, a keyholder premium for the responsibility that comes with cash and alarm codes. A certification the employer would otherwise have to buy and wait for, such as a food handler card or an alcohol server certification. Finally, coverage on the shifts nobody else wants, which is the only real bargaining power most part-time workers have.
All four are already on your resume if you wrote it the way this guide describes, which is the practical argument for the grid: it is the pay conversation, written down in advance.

Part time job resume questions, answered
How long should a part time job resume be?
One page, and usually less than a full one. A short page with an availability grid on it beats a padded page, because the reader is checking three things: can you do the work, can you cover the shifts, and will you still be here in three months.
Where exactly does availability go on the resume?
Directly under your contact details, above the summary. It is what the manager screens on, and putting it at the foot under "additional information" means it is read after the decision is made.
What do I put on a part time job resume with no work experience?
Anything with a rota attached. A volunteer shift, a campus role with fixed hours, a team you turned up to twice a week for a season, a family responsibility with set times. Write it as an entry with dates and hours, then the availability grid, an earliest start date and any certification you hold. The reader is buying reliability, and a record of turning up is the evidence.
Do I have to say if I can only work a few hours a week?
Yes, in the grid rather than hidden. Managers build schedules out of small blocks, and a firm eight hours is more useful than an unreliable twenty. What costs you the job is the limit being discovered in week three, not stated in week one.
What are the legal limits if I am 16?
Under federal law, 16 and 17 year olds may work unlimited hours in any occupation other than those the Secretary of Labor has declared hazardous (U.S. Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division, Fact Sheet #43, revised December 2016). State law is often stricter, and most states also require a work permit or age certificate, usually issued by your school or the state labor department (U.S. Department of Labor, Employment/Age Certificate table, reference date 1 January 2024). Check your own state before you write your availability.
Should I say I want the job to become full time?
Only if the posting invites it. Of the 27,142,000 people at work part time in August 2026, 22,752,000 were there for noneconomic reasons (BLS, The Employment Situation, August 2026, Table A-8, released 4 September 2026). A manager is often wary of a candidate who will leave the moment something full time appears, so let the interview raise it.
