Ms. Dana Whitlock Store Manager Vista Avenue Market Boise, United States

Application for Part-Time Front End Associate, Vista Avenue Market

Dear Ms. Whitlock,

I am applying for the part-time front end position at the Vista Avenue store. I can work Friday, Saturday and Sunday including the 6am openings, plus Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 4pm to close, and I can start on 6 October. My only fixed commitment is a class on Tuesday evenings, and I have booked travel from 18 to 22 December.

I have worked 28 hours a week at Sawtooth Market Co-op for three years, running a register, the self-checkout bank and the customer service desk at roughly 320 transactions a shift. I opened the store 90 times in the last year, which means till floats, the morning cash drop, receiving for produce and bakery, and having the front end ready before the doors unlock. I also covered 31 call-out shifts at short notice across the year, and in three years I have had no unplanned absence and no late start.

Your Vista Avenue store opens at 6am seven days a week and I understand the Sunday morning shift has been hard to cover. That is the shift I would want, and I can hold it every week rather than on a rotation.

I hold a current Idaho Food Handler card valid through March 2027, an alcohol server certification and Red Cross first aid, and I can give my current employer one week's notice. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, Trevor Landis

Summary

A part time job cover letter names the shifts you can cover, the date you can start and one piece of evidence that you turn up when you say you will. This guide gives you a full adaptable letter, the availability sentence that gets a file read first, the federal hour limits for workers under 18, and the openings that work when you have no paid history yet.

Part Time Job cover letter examples by experience level

A part time job cover letter is a short letter telling a manager which shifts you can cover, when you can start, and why they should believe you will still be doing it in three months.

It is a scheduling document more than a persuasion document. The manager has a rota with holes in specific places, and your letter is either about those holes or about you. Only one of those gets a call back.

Guide to a part time job cover letter

This guide and the corresponding part time job cover letter example will cover:

  • How to structure the letter, paragraph by paragraph
  • Why availability belongs in the first two sentences
  • What counts as evidence when you have no paid history
  • The federal hour limits that apply to workers under 18
  • The openings that work and the ones that get skipped

Expert Tip

Put the shifts in the first two sentences

Nearly every part-time cover letter opens with a sentence about wanting to join the team. The manager reading it is thinking about Sunday.

Open with the answer instead: "I can work Friday, Saturday and Sunday including openings, plus Monday and Wednesday evenings from 4pm, and I can start on 6 October." That is three screening questions closed in one line.

Then say what you cannot do. A stated constraint makes the offer credible. "I have a class on Tuesday evenings and that is my only fixed commitment" reads as someone who has thought about the rota.

What counts as evidence that you turn up

Part-time hiring runs on one belief: that you will be there. The evidence does not have to be a paid job.

Kind of evidenceWhat it looks like in a sentence
Attendance recordThree years with no unplanned absence and no late start
Shifts coveredCovered 31 call-out shifts at short notice across the year
Hard shifts heldOpened the store 90 times in the last year, at 6am
A rota kept outside workA fixed Saturday morning volunteer shift held for 14 months

Pick two. A letter with an attendance record and a hard shift in it has made the argument that three paragraphs of adjectives cannot.

If you are under 18

Statistical insight

Know the hours the law allows before you offer them

Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, workers aged 14 and 15 may work outside school hours only, and no more than 3 hours on a school day including Fridays, 8 hours on a non-school day, 18 hours in a school week and 40 hours in a non-school week, between 7am and 7pm, except between 1 June and Labor Day when the evening hour extends to 9pm. Workers aged 16 and 17 may work unlimited hours in any occupation other than those the Secretary of Labor has declared hazardous (U.S. Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division, Fact Sheet #43, revised December 2016).

Most states also require an employment or age certificate, usually called a work permit and issued by your school or the state labor department. The Department of Labor publishes a state-by-state table of issuance practice with a reference date of 1 January 2024 and notes that it does not administer state laws (U.S. Department of Labor, Employment/Age Certificate table, reference date 1 January 2024).

Offer hours inside the window rather than outside it, and if you hold the work permit, say so in the closing line. A sixteen year old whose letter shows they know the rule is easier to hire than one whose availability the manager has to correct.

Writing the letter with no paid history

Do

Lead with the shifts and the start date even when you have never been paid for work. Use any rota you have kept: a volunteer shift, a team, a family responsibility with fixed times. Give its length in months, because duration is the argument. Say what you would need shown on day one. Name the certification you hold, or the one you will have by the start date.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not apologize for having no experience; the letter is about availability. Do not write "flexible" without hours behind it. Do not offer shifts you cannot sustain past week six. Do not send a letter with no store or shift named in it. Do not ask for the job to become full time.

Length, format and sending it

Half a page to one page, four short paragraphs, 180 to 300 words. These are read quickly, often on a phone in a back office, so short wins.

Send a PDF unless the portal says otherwise, named for yourself and the role: trevor-landis-front-end-cover-letter.pdf. If the application is a web form with a free-text box, paste the same four paragraphs in rather than skipping it.

Address a person where you can. Store managers are often named on the company's location pages, and walking in to ask is normal in this kind of hiring and counts in your favor.

Keep the availability identical to your resume. Our part time job resume example uses the same grid and start date as the letter here.

Key takeaways

  1. Put the shifts you can cover and your start date in the first two sentences.
  2. Name your one fixed commitment; a stated constraint makes the offer credible.
  3. Give one attendance fact and one hard shift you have held.
  4. Say whether you can open and whether you can close.
  5. Under 18, offer hours inside the federal limits and mention the work permit.
  6. Name one real thing about their trading pattern or their site.
  7. Keep it under 300 words and the availability identical to your resume.

Part time job cover letter questions, answered

How long should a part time job cover letter be?

Half a page to one page, 180 to 300 words. A letter that answers the shift question in the first two sentences is doing its whole job.

Do I even need a cover letter for a part-time job?

Send one wherever there is a field for it. The form collects the same structured data from everyone, so the letter is the only place you can say which shifts you hold, when you start and what your one constraint is. In hiring that turns on coverage, that is not a small advantage.

What do I write if I have never had a job?

The shifts, the start date and any rota you have kept: a volunteer role, a team, a family responsibility with fixed hours. Give the duration in months, then one sentence on what you would want shown to you on day one. That reads as preparation.

Should I mention pay or hours expectations?

Hours yes, pay no. How many hours you want a week is a scheduling fact the manager needs and it belongs in the first paragraph. Pay is set by the employer and the state: the federal minimum wage has been $7.25 an hour since 24 July 2009 and a higher state minimum takes precedence (U.S. Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division, Minimum Wage page).

How do I write to a store or site I have never been to?

Go once before you write. Ten minutes in the building tells you the opening hours, how busy Sunday morning is, how many registers run and whether there is a service desk. One accurate sentence from that visit beats anything on the company website, and nobody else will have it.
