Summary

A public relations resume is a one to two page document built on two things: an honest coverage ledger that separates what you pitched and landed from what syndicated off a wire, and a plain statement of your spokesperson scope. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, a coverage block you can copy, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay for specialists and managers.

Public Relations resume examples by experience level

A public relations resume is a one to two page document built on two claims that can be checked: what coverage you actually caused, and what you were authorized to say on behalf of an organization.

Almost every resume in this field fails the first claim. A release goes out over a wire, 43 outlets republish it automatically, and the resume says "secured 43 placements". The person reading it has run a wire distribution themselves and knows exactly what happened. Honest attribution is not a modesty exercise here; it is the thing that makes the rest of your file believable.

Resume guide for a public relations resume

This guide and the corresponding public relations resume example will cover:

  • How to write a public relations resume, section by section
  • How to build a coverage ledger that separates pitched from syndicated
  • Three adaptable summaries: coordinator, specialist and manager
  • How to state your spokesperson scope, including crisis and issues work
  • What the job market looks like and what you can expect to earn

How to write a public relations resume

Six blocks: contact header, summary, the coverage ledger and spokesperson scope, experience, skills, education and accreditation. One page under five years, two once you hold on-the-record authority and an after-hours rota.

The coverage block sits directly under the summary because the two questions a communications director opens your file with are "what has this person actually landed" and "can they be put in front of a reporter without supervision". Nothing else in the document answers either one.

SectionWhat it is answeringWhere it goes
Coverage ledgerWhat did they cause, and what merely happened near them?Directly under the summary
Spokesperson scopeWhat are they cleared to say, and who signs above them? Two lines under the ledger

Expert Tip

Separate the three columns before you write a single bullet

Open a spreadsheet and give it three columns: pitched and landed, wire pickup, and paid or owned.

Pitched and landed means you contacted a named journalist or producer, and something ran because of that contact. Wire pickup means a release went out over a distribution service and outlets republished it without a human decision at their end. Paid means sponsored content, a native placement or an advertorial, and owned means your employer's own channels.

All three are legitimate work. They are simply not the same claim, and a communications director can tell them apart in about thirty seconds using a search engine. Write the first column as your headline number, the second as context, and label anything paid as paid. A candidate who volunteers the distinction is immediately more credible than one who forces the reader to discover it.

Run the finished file through the free Rezoom ATS resume checker before you send it. Agency and in-house communications teams both run high application volumes through a parser first.

Choosing the best resume format for a public relations resume

Reverse chronological. Public relations careers are read as an escalation of trust: writing for someone else's approval, then pitching in your own name, then speaking on the record, then approving what other people say.

One page covers a coordinator or an account executive. Two pages become reasonable once you hold spokesperson authority, sit on an after-hours rota, or have run an issues response with legal in the room.

Include your contact information

The third line is unusual and it is the reason this header works. Spokesperson authority is a real, granted permission inside an organization, and stating that you hold it tells a hiring manager what grade you sit at faster than any adjective.

Make use of a summary

Four lines: your setting and sector, your coverage ledger in one sentence with the pitched share named, your spokesperson scope, and your issues or crisis record.

Public relations coordinator adaptable resume summary example

Public relations coordinator at a Denver agency, with 61 unique placements over 12 months, 18 of them directly pitched and landed and the remainder wire pickup from three client releases. Cover a technology and outdoor recreation client list, draft releases and pitches for partner review, and maintain the coverage ledger that separates earned placements from syndicated duplicates. Not yet an approved spokesperson: all inbound media enquiries route to the account director within 15 minutes.

Public relations specialist adaptable resume summary example

Public relations specialist inside a nine-hospital health system, with 94 unique earned placements in the past year, 52 of them directly pitched, across 2 national trade titles, 11 top 50 metro dailies and 19 local broadcast segments. Approved on the record for service line and community health topics, with any statement touching clinical care countersigned by the chief medical officer. Staffed 11 on-camera interviews and drafted holding statements for 3 issues activations.

Public relations manager adaptable resume summary example

Public relations manager for a nine-hospital system, accountable for the coverage ledger, the spokesperson roster and the approval chain behind every statement the system issues. Designated spokesperson for operational incidents and hold the after-hours media rota, with litigation and patient care statements countersigned by the general counsel. Grew directly pitched placements from 52 to 88 a year while cutting the wire pickup share of reported coverage from 46 percent to 19 percent, and media trained 24 clinicians.

Right vs wrong: the same public relations summary, twice

✅ Right❌ Wrong
94 unique earned placements in the past year, 52 of them directly pitched.Secured over 200 media placements.
2 national trade titles, 11 top 50 metro dailies and 19 local broadcast segments.Achieved coverage in top-tier national media.
Approved on the record for service line and community health topics.Trusted media spokesperson and communications leader.
Statements touching clinical care countersigned by the chief medical officer.Worked closely with executive leadership on messaging.

The right column names an outlet tier, an attribution rule and an approval chain. The left column is a set of claims that a communications director will assume are inflated, because in most files they are.

Outline your public relations experience

Employer, sector, city, dates, and whether you were agency or in-house, since the two jobs are read differently. Then three to five bullets, each attached to a verifiable thing: a placement, a spokesperson task, a response time, an approval you held.

Adaptable resume employment history example

Public Relations Specialist, Front Range Health Network, Denver, CO, September 2022 to March 2025 (in-house, nine hospitals)

Landed 94 unique earned placements in the most recent year, 52 of them directly pitched to a named reporter or producer, across 2 national trade titles, 11 top 50 metro dailies and 19 local broadcast segments. The remaining 42 were wire pickup from 6 system releases.

Approved on the record for service line, community health and facility announcements; anything touching clinical care, litigation or patient outcomes was drafted by me and signed by the chief medical officer or the general counsel.

Staffed 11 on-camera interviews, including physician preparation, message documents and post-interview review of what actually ran.

Drafted holding statements and ran the first four hours of 3 issues activations, working to a 30 minute legal review standard agreed with the general counsel's office.

Built and maintained the system's coverage ledger, which logs every placement as pitched, syndicated, owned or paid, and is the source for the quarterly report to the board.

The coverage ledger, and what you were authorized to say

This is the section that separates a public relations resume from every other communications title, and it has two halves.

The first half is the ledger. Log every placement with five fields: outlet, tier, date, how it came about, and whether it was earned, owned or paid. "How it came about" is the field that matters, and it has only a few honest values: directly pitched, inbound enquiry answered, wire pickup, contributed byline, event coverage, or reactive comment supplied.

Ledger fieldHonest valuesWhy a hiring manager wants it
Outlet and tierNational trade, top 50 metro daily, local broadcast, niche verticalTier is the difference between a hard placement and an easy one
OriginDirectly pitched, inbound answered, wire pickup, contributed byline, reactive commentTells them what you can repeat on their beat list
CategoryEarned, owned, paidPaid placements are real work but a different skill
Unique or duplicateOne entry per outlet, syndicated duplicates counted separatelyStops a single wire release inflating a career
Message pull-throughDid your key message survive into the published piece? The only quality measure in the whole ledger

Message pull-through is worth a sentence of its own on the resume. Landing a placement that omits everything you needed said is a weaker result than a shorter piece that carries the message, and very few candidates measure it.

The second half is your spokesperson scope, and it should be two flat lines with no adjectives in them.

Adaptable resume coverage and spokesperson scope block example

Coverage, most recent 12 months: 94 unique earned placements. 52 directly pitched and landed, 14 inbound enquiries answered, 6 contributed bylines, 22 wire pickup from 6 releases. Tier: 2 national trade, 11 top 50 metro daily, 19 local broadcast, 62 regional and vertical. Key message appeared in 71 percent of pitched placements.

Paid and owned, recorded separately: 4 sponsored content units, 2 native placements, 38 posts on system-owned channels.

Spokesperson scope: approved on the record for service line, community health and facility topics. Statements on clinical care, patient outcomes or litigation drafted by me and signed by the chief medical officer or general counsel. Designated spokesperson for operational incidents and on the 24 hour media rota, 1 week in 4.

Issues and crisis: 3 activations in 2024, holding statement drafted within 30 minutes and legal review inside a further 30, with a post-incident review written for each.

Do not embellish this part. Spokesperson authority is granted in writing in most regulated sectors, and a reference call will establish exactly what yours was.

Do

Give one headline number for directly pitched placements and a second for wire pickup, in the same sentence. Name outlet tiers rather than saying "top tier". Label paid and sponsored work as paid. State whether you were approved on the record and who signed above you. Say what your first hour looks like in an issues activation, including the review standard you worked to. Count unique outlets, not syndicated duplicates.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not add wire pickup to pitched placements and report the total. Do not claim a crisis you observed from the next desk. Do not name a client's confidential matter, a patient, a complainant or an unnamed source. Do not describe yourself as a spokesperson if enquiries routed past you to someone else. Do not use an advertising equivalency figure; most professional bodies have advised against it for years and communications directors read it as a red flag.

Build a snapshot of your key skills

Twelve to fourteen entries in three groups: media relations, issues and governance, then the systems. The governance group is the one that separates senior files, so do not bury it.

Adaptable resume skills example

Media relations: Reporter and producer pitching, Beat list development, Embargo and exclusive management, Contributed bylines and op-ed placement, On-camera interview staffing, Message pull-through analysis

Issues and governance: Holding statement drafting, Crisis activation and first hour protocol, Legal and clinical review workflows, Spokesperson approval and media training, Statement records and post-incident review

Writing: Press releases, Media advisories, Executive talking points, Briefing documents, Q and A preparation

Systems: Muck Rack, Cision, Meltwater, coverage ledger maintenance, Google Analytics for referral traffic from earned coverage

List your education and certifications

Degree, then accreditation, then crisis and media training with the awarding body and year. Public relations has no license, so accreditation carries more weight here than in occupations where it duplicates a legal requirement.

Adaptable resume education and accreditation example

Accredited in Public Relations (APR), Universal Accreditation Board, 2024, certificate APR-2024-11627.

Bachelor of Arts, Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Colorado Boulder, Boulder, CO, 2020. Emphasis in news editorial; two years on the student newspaper city desk.

Additional training: Crisis Communication Certificate, Public Relations Society of America, 2023. Media training for spokespeople, delivered in-house by an external broadcast trainer, 2023 and refreshed 2026.

A news background is worth naming explicitly. Knowing how a newsroom decides what runs is the single most transferable thing in this field, and a reporter's instinct for a deadline shows up in every pitch you write.

Choose the right layout and design

Single column, plain type, clear headings, no photograph, no outlet logos. Reproducing a masthead on a resume implies a relationship with a publication that you do not have, and in this field the reader will notice.

Keep the coverage ledger as labeled plain lines rather than a chart. Those numbers are the ones you want quoted back to you in an interview, and a parser cannot read them out of a graphic.

Public relations job market and outlook

A large occupation growing slowly, with most hiring driven by replacement rather than expansion, and a clearly separate management tier above it.

Statistical insight

Where public relations specialists actually work, and what it pays

The sector spread matters more in this occupation than in most, because it changes both the pay and the kind of authority you can be granted. In May 2025, the median for public relations specialists was $81,350 in government excluding education and hospitals, $77,480 in advertising, public relations and related services, $71,720 in grantmaking and social advocacy organizations, $66,220 in educational services and $64,550 in healthcare and social assistance, against an occupation median of $74,750 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).

Employment is projected to grow just 2 percent between 2025 and 2035 for specialists, with about 23,000 openings a year across the decade, most of them replacing people who move on (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025 to 2035 projections). The management tier above is projected to grow 6 percent over the same period, with public relations managers at a median of $146,910 in May 2025 (BLS, May 2025).

The practical reading for your resume is that the jump from specialist to manager is where the money is, and what gets granted at that jump is authority: the spokesperson roster, the approval chain and the after-hours rota. Document those and you are applying for the growing half of the occupation.

What salary you can expect in public relations

Public relations specialists had a median annual wage of $74,750 in May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent under $44,110 and the highest 10 percent above $135,150 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025). Public relations managers had a median of $146,910 in the same cycle, and in professional, scientific and technical services that figure was $169,030 (BLS, May 2025).

That is a very wide band for one occupational family, and the ledger explains most of it. A specialist whose coverage record is wire pickup and owned channels is doing production work. A specialist who pitches a named beat list, answers inbound enquiries on deadline and holds on-the-record authority is doing something an employer cannot easily replace, and the pay reflects it.

Two other things move you through the band. Sector is one, with government roles paying above the occupation median in May 2025 and healthcare below it. The second is out-of-hours exposure: an after-hours rota, a crisis role or a designated spokesperson duty is compensated in most organizations, and it is invisible on a resume unless you put it there.

Key takeaways for a public relations resume

  1. Split your coverage into pitched, inbound, wire pickup, owned and paid, and lead with the first.
  2. Count unique outlets, never syndicated duplicates.
  3. Name outlet tiers instead of writing "top tier".
  4. State your spokesperson scope in one flat line, and who signs above you.
  5. Include message pull-through, since it is the only quality measure in the ledger.
  6. Describe your first hour in an issues activation, with the review standard you worked to.
  7. Never use an advertising equivalency figure.

Public relations resume questions, answered

How long should a public relations resume be?

One page for a coordinator or account executive. Two pages once you hold spokesperson authority, sit on an after-hours rota, or have run issues work with legal involved. The coverage ledger is what justifies the second page, not a longer client list.

Is it really a problem to count wire pickup as placements?

Yes, and it is the most common reason an otherwise good file loses credibility. Anyone who has run a distribution knows that a single release can produce dozens of automatic republications. Report both numbers in one sentence, lead with the pitched figure, and you turn the weakness into evidence that you measure your own work carefully.

How do I show coverage when my clients are confidential?

Describe the sector, the outlet tier and the origin without naming the client: "landed a national trade feature and two top 50 metro daily pieces for a private healthcare client, both directly pitched". Check your agency's policy first. Naming a confidential client on a resume is a reason to not hire you, whatever the coverage was.

Should a public relations resume mention crisis work?

Only what you actually did. There is a large difference between drafting the holding statement, staffing the phone line, and standing in front of a camera. Write the specific task, the time standard you worked to, and who reviewed your words. A precise small role reads better than a vague large one.

Does the APR accreditation matter?

It is worth listing, particularly in government, healthcare and nonprofit hiring, where formal accreditation is recognized as evidence of ethics and process training. It is not a license and no employer can require it, so it supports a file rather than gating one. Put the awarding body and year next to it.

What do I write with no professional placements yet?

Write student newsroom, campus communications or volunteer work as a job, with the same ledger discipline: what you pitched, what ran, in which outlet, and what you were allowed to say. A candidate who reports four honestly attributed placements is more employable than one who reports forty that a search engine cannot corroborate.
