Summary

A social media manager resume is a one to two page document that declares which parts of the job you owned, at what volume and budget, and how you kept paid and creator content inside the federal disclosure rules. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the compliance block almost nobody writes, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook for the adjacent published occupations.

Social Media Manager resume examples by experience level

A social media manager resume is a one to two page document that says which parts of social media you personally ran, at what volume or budget, and how you kept paid and creator content inside the federal disclosure rules.

Both halves of that sentence are unusual on the page, and both are why the title is hard to hire for. "Social media manager" is not one job. It is at least four separable jobs that share a set of apps, and employers hire for one or two at a time. A resume that does not say which forces the reader to guess, and the guess is usually wrong.

Resume guide for a social media manager resume

This guide and the corresponding social media manager resume example will cover:

  • How to write a social media manager resume, section by section
  • The four jobs the title covers, and the evidence each one needs
  • Three adaptable summaries: coordinator, manager and creator program lead
  • The disclosure rules that reach your posts, and how to show you ran them properly
  • What the job market looks like and what you can expect to earn

How to write a social media manager resume

Six blocks: contact header, summary, scope declaration, experience, skills, and education with certifications. One page under five years, two pages once you run a budget or a team.

The scope declaration sits directly under the summary because everything below it is read differently depending on what it says. Community response volume is the point on a community manager's resume and irrelevant on a paid buyer's.

SectionWhat it is answeringWhere it goes
Scope declarationWhich of the four social jobs did this person actually own?Directly under the summary
ExperienceAt what volume, budget or headcount, and what changed?Reverse chronological, a number in every bullet
Disclosure and complianceCan I put this person in front of creators and legal? Its own short block, not buried in bullets
SkillsPlatforms, tooling and reporting, kept separate from the scope claimShort grouped block
Expert Tip

Write the scope line before you write anything else

Draft one sentence naming what you owned, what you contributed to and what someone else did, then build the rest of the resume so it never contradicts it.

"Owned the organic calendar and the community queue. Briefed and reviewed a paid agency, did not buy media myself. Ran the creator program end to end including contracts and disclosure."

That sentence costs you nothing you actually had, and it buys credibility for everything else on the page. Hiring managers in this discipline have all interviewed someone whose resume implied a full stack of ownership and who had only ever scheduled posts.

Run the finished file through the free Rezoom ATS resume checker before you send it. In-house marketing teams and agencies both screen high application volumes through a parser first.

Choosing the best resume format for a social media manager resume

Reverse chronological, single column. One page for your first five years, two once you carry budget, headcount or a creator program.

Avoid the portfolio-style layout some social candidates submit, with screenshots and platform icons instead of dates. A parser strips that file down to almost nothing. Put the work in a linked folder or a simple page and keep the resume plain.

The right-hand column has a number in it and still says less than the left. A follower figure with no account, no date and no indication of who built it is not a claim a hiring manager can use.

Make use of a summary

Four lines: the parts of the job you owned, the volume or budget behind them, one compliance or process fact, and one measured change.

Social media manager adaptable resume summary example

Social media manager covering organic content and community for an outdoor apparel brand, with paid social bought by an agency I brief and review rather than execute. Own the twelve-week content calendar, one coordinator, a freelance editor, and a community queue averaging 1,900 comments and messages a week against a four business hour weekday first-response target. Rebuilt the gifting workflow so every creator post carries a clear and conspicuous disclosure before it publishes, taking unlabelled gifted posts to zero across two seasons. Write the monthly report the merchandising team plans from.

Creator program lead adaptable resume summary example

Senior social media manager running a creator partnership program of 60 to 80 paid creators a year alongside the organic calendar, with a team of four and a working budget of $1.4 million. Wrote the brand's creator contract language and disclosure standard against the FTC endorsement guides at 16 CFR Part 255, including the rule that reaches employees posting about their own employer's products, and run a quarterly audit of live partner content with a documented correction path. Brought paid social buying in house from an agency, which moved media planning from a monthly to a fortnightly cycle. Brief legal and merchandising monthly and sit in the seasonal range review.

Senior Social Media Manager, Wilder & Pine Outdoor Co., Portland, OR, January 2024 to Present

Direct-to-consumer outdoor apparel brand. Own organic content, community and the creator partnership program; team of four; $1.4M annual working budget.

Ran 74 paid creator partnerships in the last twelve months, from sourcing and contracting through briefing, review and payment, with disclosure language written into the contract and verified on the live post before the invoice was approved.

Wrote the brand's creator and employee disclosure standard against the FTC endorsement guides at 16 CFR Part 255, trained 40 retail and head office staff on it, and put a quarterly audit of live partner content in place with a documented correction path.

Cut average first response on the community queue from 19 hours to under 4 business hours by rebuilding triage rules and moving escalation for product safety comments straight to the quality team.

Brought paid social buying in house from the agency across a four-month transition, which moved media planning from a monthly to a fortnightly cycle.

Declare which half of the social media manager job you ran

One job title, at least four different jobs underneath it. These are hired separately, paid differently and evidenced with completely different numbers, and the single most useful thing your resume can do is say which of them you did.

The job inside the titleWhat it actually isThe evidence it needs
Organic content and calendarPlanning, producing and publishing owned content on a schedulePosting volume and cadence, production model, formats you can make yourself, who else you direct
Paid social buyingMedia planning, buying, budget control, testing and reportingBudget owned in dollars, platforms bought, who signs off, in house or agency, what you optimized
Community management and responseTriage, response, escalation, moderation policy, crisis routingQueue volume, response targets, escalation routes, moderation rules you wrote
Creator and influencer partnershipsSourcing, contracting, briefing, disclosure, payment, measurementPartnership counts, contract ownership, disclosure process, how you measured and what you cut

Very few people have done all four at depth, and a resume implying otherwise reads as inexperience rather than range.

Adaptable resume scope declaration example

Owned end to end: organic content calendar across Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts and LinkedIn; community management and escalation; creator partnership program including sourcing, contracting, briefing, disclosure and payment.

Owned with support: paid social budget and media plan, bought by an agency until 2025 and in house since; crisis response, jointly with communications.

Contributed to, did not own: brand campaign concepting, led by the creative team; email and lifecycle, led by CRM.

Team and budget: four direct reports, $1.4M annual working budget, monthly reporting line into the marketing director.

Show the disclosure discipline behind your creator work

Here is the half of the job most social resumes leave out completely, and it separates candidates faster than any follower number.

The Federal Trade Commission's Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising are codified at 16 CFR Part 255 and were revised in 2023. The FTC's business guidance sets out that where there is a connection between an endorser and the marketer that a significant minority of consumers would not expect, and it would affect how those consumers evaluate the endorsement, that connection should be disclosed clearly and conspicuously (Federal Trade Commission business guidance, ftc.gov, accessed September 2026).

Two consequences follow, and both belong on a resume.

Gifting is a material connection. Free product, early access, travel, an affiliate link or an ongoing relationship all sit inside the rule. A program where creators are trusted to remember is not a program. One where the language is in the contract, in the brief, checked on the live post before payment and re-checked on a schedule is.

The rule reaches your own colleagues. The FTC's guidance addresses employees posting about their own employer's products directly, so the staff training and social policy you wrote is compliance work, not housekeeping. Very few candidates think to say they have done it.

Adaptable resume disclosure and compliance example

Disclosure standard: wrote and maintain the brand's creator disclosure standard against the FTC endorsement guides at 16 CFR Part 255, covering gifted product, paid partnerships, affiliate links, ongoing ambassadors and employee posting.

In the contract: disclosure obligations written into the standard creator agreement, with the required placement and wording specified rather than left to the creator, and payment conditional on the live post meeting it.

In the workflow: disclosure checked at brief, at draft review and on the published post; the check is a required field before an invoice is approved.

Ongoing: quarterly audit of live partner content still in market, with a documented correction and takedown path.

Internal: trained 40 retail and head office staff on the employee posting rules and rewrote the staff social policy to match.

Do

Name the parts of the job you owned and the parts you did not. Give budget in dollars if you controlled one, and say whether buying was in house or agency. State community queue volume with a response target attached. Describe the disclosure process as a process, with the points in the workflow where it is checked. Say how many creator partnerships you ran and over what period.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not put a follower count in the header with no account, date or indication of who built it. Do not claim you ran paid social if you briefed someone who did. Do not cite a benchmark engagement rate you cannot source to a named, dated publication. Do not describe yourself as a guru, ninja or storyteller. Do not submit a screenshot-heavy portfolio file as the resume itself.

Build a snapshot of your key skills

Twelve to fourteen entries in three groups. Keep the platforms separate from the disciplines, because the disciplines are what transfer and the platforms are what change.

Adaptable resume skills example

Disciplines: Organic content strategy and calendar planning, Community management and escalation, Creator and influencer program management, Endorsement disclosure compliance, Social listening and issue triage, Paid social briefing and budget control, Reporting and monthly readouts

Platforms: Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, LinkedIn, Facebook, Reddit, Pinterest

Tooling: Sprout Social, Later, Meta Business Suite, TikTok Ads Manager, Google Analytics 4, Airtable, Adobe Premiere Pro, Canva

Production: Short-form video editing, Copywriting for social, Production day planning, Asset briefing for designers and photographers

List your education and certifications

Short and dated, with each authority named. Treat vendor certifications as supporting evidence, never as the argument.

Adaptable resume education and certifications example

Bachelor of Arts, Communication, University of Oregon, Eugene, OR, 2016

Meta Certified Digital Marketing Associate, Meta Blueprint, 2023

Hootsuite Social Marketing Certification, Hootsuite Academy, 2021

FTC endorsement guides training, delivered in house by brand counsel, most recent refresher 2026

Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Certified Professional, 2022

Internal legal training is not a certificate, and writing it as plainly as it happened is more persuasive than dressing it up.

Choose the right layout and design

Single column, 11 or 12 point, plain section headings, no photograph, PDF unless the portal asks for Word. Put one link to a work sample folder or a simple page, as a plain URL that survives a parser, and keep everything else on the page as text.

Where candidates in this discipline lose the file is the compulsion to design it. A resume with the scope claim inside a graphic parses into a handful of stray words. Save the craft for the work you link to.

Social media manager job market and outlook

The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes no Occupational Outlook Handbook profile for "social media manager". That is not a gap in the data so much as a description of the job: the work is spread across two published occupations, and pay follows whichever one your role actually sits inside.

The closer of the two is public relations specialists, an occupation whose BLS duty statements state that these specialists are usually the ones in charge of monitoring and responding to social media questions and concerns (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, accessed September 2026). If your job is organic content and community, that is the band you are being paid in.

Statistical insight

Two occupations, one job title, a $92,000 gap

Public relations specialists had a median annual wage of $74,750 in May 2025, with employment of 314,500 in 2025 projected to reach 320,200 by 2035, a change of 2 percent and about 23,000 openings a year (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025 wage data and 2025 to 2035 projections).

Marketing managers had a median annual wage of $166,790 in May 2025, in an occupation group of 454,800 with a projected change of 6 percent from 2025 to 2035 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025 wage data and 2025 to 2035 projections).

Those two medians are the floor and the ceiling of the same job title, roughly $92,000 apart. What moves a social career upward is not platform fluency, which everyone has. It is budget, headcount and a program with commercial and legal exposure attached, which is exactly what the scope declaration and the disclosure block evidence.

Where public relations specialists work, by employment share in 2025: educational services 14 percent, advertising, public relations and related services 12 percent, government 11 percent, and healthcare and social assistance 7 percent (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025).

What salary you can expect as a social media manager

Because there is no BLS profile for the title, read your pay against the occupation your scope matches. Public relations specialists had a median annual wage of $74,750 in May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent earning less than $44,110 and the highest 10 percent more than $135,150 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).

Industry moves that number before seniority does. For public relations specialists in May 2025, government excluding education and hospitals paid a median of $81,350 and advertising, public relations and related services $77,480, against $66,220 in educational services (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025). The same nominal role is a different pay band in an agency and in a school district.

Above that band sits management, where marketing managers had a median annual wage of $166,790 in May 2025 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025). That step is a change of job, made on budget, people and accountability. A resume showing a controlled budget, a team, contracts and a compliance process you own argues for it; one showing platform fluency and follower growth argues to stay where it is.

Key takeaways for a social media manager resume

  1. Declare which of the four social jobs you owned, and which you only contributed to.
  2. Put the scope declaration directly under the summary, before any platform list.
  3. Give budget in dollars, team size in people, and community volume with a response target.
  4. Treat disclosure as a process and describe where in the workflow it is checked.
  5. Say you trained colleagues on employee posting rules if you did; it is compliance work.
  6. Keep follower counts out of the header, and link to work rather than designing the resume.
  7. Anchor your pay expectation on the published occupation your scope actually matches.

Social media manager resume questions, answered

How long should a social media manager resume be?

One page for your first five years. Two once you control a budget, manage people or own a creator program with contracts attached, because the scope declaration and the compliance block both need room. Never three.

Should I put follower counts on a social media manager resume?

Not in the header, and not without context. A raw number says nothing about whether you inherited the account, built it or bought the growth. If a growth figure is genuinely yours, put it in an experience bullet with the account, the period and what you changed to cause it.

What if I only did one part of the job?

Say so in the first line and go deep on it. Specialists are hired constantly here: community teams hire community managers, performance teams hire paid buyers, brand teams hire creator program managers. The applicant who claims all four and evidences one loses to the applicant who claims one and evidences it properly.

Do I really need to write about disclosure compliance?

If you have run gifting or paid partnerships, yes. The FTC endorsement guides at 16 CFR Part 255, revised in 2023, require that a material connection a significant minority of consumers would not expect is disclosed clearly and conspicuously, and the guidance reaches employees posting about their own employer's products (Federal Trade Commission business guidance, ftc.gov, accessed September 2026). Anyone hiring for creator work carries that exposure, and a candidate who has run a compliant program is solving a real problem.

What do I put on a social media manager resume with no experience?

Anything with a schedule, an audience and a record. Accounts you ran for a student society, a local business or a charity all count, provided you write them like a job: what you published and how often, the community volume, what you measured and what changed. Entry-level hiring in social is about production capability and reliability, not reach.

How do I show results without claiming an engagement benchmark?

Report your own tracked numbers with the period and the account attached, and skip industry comparisons unless you can name a dated published source. Response times, publishing cadence, partnership counts, budget managed and sign-up numbers credited by another team are all verifiable in an interview. A benchmark you cannot source is the easiest thing on a resume to be caught on.
