Summary

A marketing manager resume is a one to two page document showing the marketing plan you owned end to end, the commercial number it was built to hit, and what you cut to fund it. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, a plan block that replaces a list of campaigns, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook for marketing managers.

Marketing Manager resume examples by experience level

A marketing manager resume is a one to two page document that shows the plan you owned end to end, the commercial number that plan was built to hit, and what you chose not to do in order to fund it.

Most marketing manager resumes are campaign inventories. Launched a rebrand, ran a webinar program, managed the trade show calendar, produced a customer magazine. Each entry is true and none of it answers the question a hiring director is holding, which is whether you can be given a number and a budget in January and be trusted to come back in December having hit it.

Resume guide for a marketing manager resume

This guide and the corresponding marketing manager resume example will cover:

  • How to write a marketing manager resume, section by section
  • Why the plan, not the campaign list, is what gets read
  • Three adaptable summaries: first manager role, consumer brand, and B2B team lead
  • How to write the number you were accountable for, and the cadence you defended it in
  • What the job market looks like and what you can expect to earn

How to write a marketing manager resume

Six blocks: contact header, summary, the plan and the number, experience, skills, education and certifications. One page under five years, two pages once you have owned more than one annual plan.

The plan block sits under the summary because it is the fastest way to establish level. Coordinators execute other people's plans. Managers write one, defend it, fund it by cutting something, and report against it. That distinction is the whole hiring decision, and a campaign list obscures it in both directions.

Expert Tip

Write the number before you write anything else

Start with one sentence: what was marketing measured on while you were there, and what was your share of it?

It might be revenue, qualified pipeline, new customer count, retention, category share, average order value, event registrations converted to meetings, or a membership renewal rate. It is almost never "brand awareness" on its own, and a resume that offers only that reads as a candidate who was never given a number.

Then say how the number reached you. "I owned the full-year qualified pipeline target of $18 million and built the plan against it" is a different job from "I delivered the campaign calendar against a pipeline target set by the chief revenue officer", and both are worth writing accurately.

Finally, say where you defended it: a monthly business review, a quarterly board pack, a weekly pipeline call with sales leadership. The cadence tells a reader how exposed you were, which is the part interviewers probe first.

Run the finished file through the free Rezoom ATS resume checker before you send it. Marketing roles draw very high application volume, so the first reader is usually a parser.

Choosing the best resume format for a marketing manager resume

Reverse chronological, single column. One page for the first five years, two after you have owned a full-year plan more than once.

Avoid the portfolio-style layout. Designers can carry a two-column resume; marketing managers are being assessed on judgement and accountability, and a layout that fragments the timeline makes both harder to read. If you have visual work worth showing, link to it once and keep the document plain.

The second and third lines answer level in two seconds: budget, team, and who you answered to. A channel list answers nothing, because every marketing manager has touched all of them.

Make use of a summary

Four lines: the plan you owned, the number, one result with a baseline and a period, and the team and suppliers you directed.

First marketing manager role adaptable resume summary example

Marketing manager for a single homewares product line, promoted from coordinator and given the quarterly plan and a $310,000 annual budget. Built the plan against a target of 14,000 new customers a year and delivered 15,600 by cutting two long-running print placements and moving the money into a spring catalog and a retailer co-operative program. Run the campaign calendar with one coordinator and a design freelancer, and present results at the monthly commercial review.

Consumer brand marketing manager adaptable resume summary example

Marketing manager for an outdoor consumer brand, owning the annual marketing plan and a $1.8 million budget against a revenue target of $26 million. Hit the target in three of four years and finished the missed year within 4 percent after a delayed product launch, which I reforecast in July rather than at year end. Cut sponsorship spending by a third to fund a retail partnership program that grew doors from 180 to 340 in two years. Direct a team of four and two agencies.

B2B marketing manager adaptable resume summary example

Marketing manager in industrial software, owning a $4.2 million annual plan against a qualified pipeline target of $18 million and defending it in the quarterly business review. Delivered $19.6 million of qualified pipeline in 2025 after rebuilding the plan around three named verticals and stopping two legacy trade shows that had absorbed 22 percent of budget. Lead six people and three agencies, and run a fortnightly planning cycle with sales leadership that replaced an annual handover.

Right vs wrong: the same marketing manager summary, twice

✅ Right❌ Wrong
Owned a $4.2 million annual plan against a qualified pipeline target of $18 million.Managed marketing budgets and campaigns across multiple channels.
Stopped two legacy trade shows that had absorbed 22 percent of budget.Optimized marketing spend to maximize return on investment.
Hit the target in three of four years and finished the missed year within 4 percent.Consistently exceeded marketing goals and KPIs.
Defended the plan in the quarterly business review.Partnered with cross-functional stakeholders to drive alignment.

The right column describes a person who has been accountable. The left column describes a person who has been present, and after a few hundred applications a hiring director can tell the difference in one line.

Outline your marketing experience

Company, what it sells, the plan and budget you owned, the team and agencies, your dates. Then three to five bullets, each carrying a decision and a consequence rather than an activity.

Adaptable resume employment history example

Marketing Manager, Vantage Industrial Software, Minneapolis, MN, April 2022 to Present

Industrial software, roughly $95 million in annual revenue. Own the annual marketing plan and a $4.2 million budget against a qualified pipeline target of $18 million. Lead six people across demand generation, content, events and product marketing, plus three agencies.

Rebuilt the plan around three named verticals and stopped pursuing two others we had no right to win, which took 30 percent of activity out of the calendar and freed the team to build depth.

Stopped two legacy trade shows that had absorbed 22 percent of budget and redirected it into a field event program run with sales; qualified pipeline reached $19.6 million in 2025 against the $18 million target.

Replaced the annual plan handover to sales with a fortnightly planning cycle, so priorities could be changed in flight rather than argued about in January.

Defend the plan and its variance in the quarterly business review, including the quarter we finished 11 percent short and the reforecast that followed.

Run the launch calendar with product management, including the readiness criteria that let us move a launch date twice without losing the quarter.

Show the plan you owned and the number it was measured against

A marketing manager is hired to make choices under a constraint, and a plan is the record of those choices. The campaign list tells a reader what happened. The plan tells them what you decided, which is the thing being bought.

Six parts make a plan legible on a resume. Most candidates write one of them.

Part of the planWhat to writeWhy it lands
The numberThe commercial target the plan was built to hitIt establishes that you were accountable at all
The budgetThe total and whether you set it or received itConstraint is what makes a choice a choice
The mixWhere the money went, in three or four lines, not twentyIt shows a point of view, not a channel inventory
What you cutThe activity you stopped, and what it had costThis is the strongest single line on the page
The team and suppliersPeople and agencies you directed, by numberIt separates a manager from a specialist
The cadenceWhere the number was reviewed, and by whomIt shows how exposed you were when it went wrong
Expert Tip

What you cut is the most persuasive line you can write

Anyone can add activity. A plan is defined by what it excludes, and the sentence naming what you stopped funding is almost always the most credible one in a marketing manager's resume.

"Stopped two legacy trade shows that had absorbed 22 percent of budget" tells a reader four things at once: you knew the cost, you were willing to remove something with internal supporters, you had the authority to do it, and you had somewhere better to put the money.

It also invites the follow-up question you want, which is what happened next. Have the answer ready, including the part where somebody was unhappy about it.

If you have never cut anything, that is worth noticing before you apply. It usually means you have been executing a plan rather than owning one, and the honest version of your resume should say so.

Then write the plan as a block a reader can scan in ten seconds.

Adaptable resume plan and accountability block example

Plan owned: full-year marketing plan for industrial software, built in October, reforecast quarterly.

Number: qualified pipeline of $18 million, contributing to a $95 million revenue plan. Delivered $19.6 million in 2025.

Budget: $4.2 million, proposed by me and approved by the chief executive and finance director.

Mix: three named verticals, 55 percent to field events and account programs, 30 percent to demand generation, 15 percent to product marketing and content.

Cut to fund it: two legacy trade shows at 22 percent of prior-year budget, and a sponsorship renewal we could not connect to pipeline.

Team and suppliers: six direct reports, three agencies on retainer, one freelance designer.

Cadence: fortnightly planning with sales leadership, monthly forecast, quarterly business review with the executive team.

Three points on writing that block well.

Prioritization reads better than breadth. A plan that names three verticals and drops two is more persuasive than one that covers everything, because the second describes a budget being spread rather than allocated. Hiring directors have usually lived through the spread version and know how it ends.

Cross-functional delivery belongs here, not in a skills list. "Partnered with stakeholders" is invisible. "Ran the launch calendar with product management, including the readiness criteria that let us move a date twice without losing the quarter" describes actual joint work, and it is the same length.

Write the year you missed. A manager who reports four consecutive years of hitting target reads as either lucky or unreliable. Naming the miss, the size of it, and when you reforecast is disarming, and it makes the successes believable. It also happens to be the question most interview panels ask third.

Build a snapshot of your key skills

Twelve to sixteen entries in three groups. Favor planning, commercial and delivery skills over software names; the tools change every two years and everyone lists the same ones.

Adaptable resume skills example

Planning and commercial: Annual and quarterly marketing planning, Budget setting and reforecasting, Target setting and variance reporting, Segmentation and vertical prioritization, Pricing and promotion input, Business case writing

Delivery: Campaign and launch calendar management, Cross-functional launch readiness, Agency selection and management, Brief writing, Team leadership and objective setting, Supplier negotiation

Craft and channels: Positioning and messaging, Content strategy, Events and field marketing, Partner and channel marketing, Customer research, Product marketing

List your education and certifications

Short and dated, each authority named. In marketing management the degree matters less than evidence that you have been trained in planning rather than only in channels.

Adaptable resume education and certifications example

Bachelor of Science in Business, Marketing, Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN, 2010.

Professional Certified Marketer, Marketing Management, American Marketing Association, 2019, maintained current.

Pragmatic Institute, Foundations and Focus certifications, 2021.

Continuing: financial statements for non-financial managers, completed 2023.

The last line is worth more than it looks. A marketing manager who can read a profit and loss statement argues for budget differently, and very few resumes give any evidence of it.

Choose the right layout and design

Single column, 11 point body type, no photograph, no skill dials, no brand-colored headers. PDF unless the portal asks for Word. One portfolio or case study link, checked before you send.

Do

Name the commercial number the plan was built to hit. Say whether you set the budget or received it. Write the activity you cut and what it had cost. Give the team and agency count inside each role. Name the review cadence and who sat in it. Include the year you missed and what you did about it.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not list campaigns as achievements; a campaign is an activity, not an outcome. Do not claim a plan you executed but did not write. Do not use "drove", "spearheaded" or "owned the narrative" in place of a number. Do not fill the skills block with tool names. Do not describe results only as awareness or engagement when a commercial number existed.

Statistical insight

Where marketing managers actually work

Marketing management is more concentrated than it looks from job adverts. Professional, scientific and technical services employ 23 percent of marketing managers and management of companies and enterprises another 12 percent (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).

That concentration also tracks pay. In May 2025 the median for marketing managers was $192,600 in information, $172,580 in management of companies and enterprises and $172,350 in finance and insurance, against an occupation-wide median of $166,790 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).

Employment across advertising, promotions and marketing managers is projected to grow 6 percent between 2025 and 2035, with about 36,300 openings a year on average across the decade (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025 to 2035 projections).

For your resume, the consequence is that a large share of these roles are in agencies, consultancies and group head offices, where the reader is assessing whether you can plan against someone else's commercial target and report on it formally. That is exactly what the plan block on your resume demonstrates.

What salary you can expect as a marketing manager

Marketing managers had a median annual wage of $166,790 in May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent earning less than $90,260 and the highest 10 percent more than $293,610 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025). Advertising and promotions managers, the neighboring occupation, had a median of $133,660 in the same cycle (BLS, May 2025).

The band is wide because the title is worn by very different jobs. A marketing manager running a product line inside a brand team and a marketing manager owning a $4 million plan with six reports are separated by roughly the width of that distribution, and nothing on a conventional resume distinguishes them. The plan block does, which is the practical reason to write it.

Three things move you through the band. Budget and number come first, because accountability is what the role is paid for. Team and supplier leadership comes second; managing three agencies is a different job from briefing one. Third is sector, since the Handbook's May 2025 figures put information and financial services well above the occupation median while other sectors sit below it.

Key takeaways for a marketing manager resume

  1. Lead with the plan you owned and the commercial number it was built to hit.
  2. Say whether you set the budget or received it.
  3. Write what you cut to fund the plan, and what it had cost.
  4. Give the team and agency count inside each role.
  5. Name the review cadence and who was in the room.
  6. Include the year you missed, its size, and when you reforecast.
  7. Keep the skills block on planning and delivery, not tool names.

Marketing manager resume questions, answered

How long should a marketing manager resume be?

One page for the first five years, two once you have owned a full-year plan more than once. The second page earns its place if it carries a second plan with a different number and a different constraint, which is genuinely useful evidence. It does not earn its place as a longer campaign list.

What if I have never owned a full marketing plan?

Write the part you did own, at the level you owned it. A quarterly plan for one product line, a launch plan, an events calendar with its own budget: all of these have a number, a constraint and a set of choices in them. Describing a smaller plan accurately reads far better than implying a bigger one, because the first interview question is always about the trade-offs.

Should I include campaign results if the campaign was not mine?

Only with the role stated plainly. "Delivered the campaign calendar against a pipeline target set by the chief revenue officer" is honest and still shows scale. Claiming the plan when you executed it is the most common exaggeration in marketing resumes, and it is caught by a single question about how the budget was set.

How do I show marketing results when sales closed the revenue?

Use the measure your business actually held marketing to, and say who owned the rest. Qualified pipeline, sourced opportunities, new customer count, retention rate and registrations converted to meetings are all legitimate. Pair the number with the plan it came from and the period, and leave the attribution argument for the interview.

Do certifications matter for a marketing manager role?

Less than the plan, but they help in two cases. If you are moving from a specialist channel role into general management, something like the American Marketing Association's Professional Certified Marketer signals that you have been trained in planning rather than execution. If you are returning after a career break, a dated certification shows currency. Neither substitutes for a number on the page.
