Summary
A brand manager resume is a one to two page document describing a line of business rather than a campaign: the SKUs you owned, the price architecture and pack sizes, your distribution and share of the category, and the gross margin you were accountable for. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, a brand P&L block, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay.
Brand Manager resume examples by experience level
A brand manager resume is a one to two page document that describes a line of business. How many SKUs you owned, what they sold for, in how many stores, at what gross margin, and what you were allowed to launch.
Brand management is a general management job wearing a marketing title. The person reading your file is not looking for a campaign portfolio. They are looking for evidence that someone has handed you a range with a margin line attached and that the range came back healthier than you found it.
Resume guide for a brand manager resume
This guide and the corresponding brand manager resume example will cover:
- How to write a brand manager resume, section by section
- Why the range, not the campaign list, is the unit of evidence
- Three adaptable summaries: assistant brand manager, brand manager and senior brand manager
- How to write SKU count, price architecture, distribution, share and gross margin on one line each
- What the job market looks like and what you can expect to earn
How to write a brand manager resume
Six blocks: contact header, summary, the brand P&L and range block, experience, skills, education and certifications. One page while you are an assistant, two once you have carried a full range through an annual plan and a stage gate launch.
The range block goes directly under the summary because it is the fastest way to establish scale. Two candidates can both be called brand manager and be separated by a factor of twenty in net sales, by whether they held the margin line or only the marketing budget, and by whether they could kill a SKU or only propose it.
| Section | What it is answering | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Brand P&L and range | What line of business did they actually run, and how big was it? | Directly under the summary |
| Experience | What did they change about the range, and what did it do to margin and share? | Reverse chronological, one number per bullet |
| Stage gate record | Have they carried a product from concept to shelf, or only supported one? | One line inside each role |
| Skills | Commercial and category skills first, tools last | Short grouped block |
Write the range before you write anything else
Before you draft a single bullet, write four plain sentences about the biggest range you have owned.
First, the shape of it: how many SKUs, in how many pack sizes and formats, sold to which channels. Second, the money: annual net sales, and whether you were accountable for gross margin, contribution, or marketing spend only. Third, the position: your price architecture from opening price point to premium tier, and your gap to private label or the nearest competitor. Fourth, the distribution: your ACV weighted distribution and your share of the category, both with the measurement source and period.
Those four sentences are the resume. Everything else is supporting evidence for them. If you cannot write the second sentence, you were probably running a marketing plan rather than a brand, and it is better to say so accurately than to imply a P&L you did not hold.
Run the finished file through the free Rezoom ATS resume checker before you send it. Consumer goods employers run high application volumes through a parser first.
Choosing the best resume format for a brand manager resume
Reverse chronological, always. Brand management careers are read as a progression of scale: assistant on someone else's range, then your own smaller brand, then a portfolio with people under you. A format that hides the sequence hides the only thing the reader is measuring.
One page covers an assistant brand manager and most first brand manager roles. Two pages start to make sense once you have run more than one annual plan, taken a product through a full stage gate, and led other brand people.

The second line is doing real work. A recruiter screening forty consumer goods files can sort by scale in one pass if you give them the scale, and cannot if you give them an adjective.
Make use of a summary
Four lines: the range and its size, the margin or P&L responsibility, one movement in share or margin with its period, and your stage gate record.
Assistant brand manager supporting a 9 SKU shelf-stable broth line worth $14.2 million in annual net sales across two pack sizes and three price tiers. Own the monthly share and velocity reporting for the range, the promotional calendar submissions, and the gate one concept paperwork for two line extensions. Rebuilt the 14.5 ounce opening price point pack after a category review and held 62 percent ACV weighted distribution through a full planogram reset.
Brand manager owning a 23 SKU soup and broth range at $61 million net sales and 34.8 percent gross margin, with P&L accountability from trade spend through to contribution. Took the range from 8.4 percent to 10.1 percent of the shelf-stable broth category over two years while lifting gross margin 1.6 points through a price pack architecture reset. Carry two products a year through a five gate stage gate process, including the business case and the launch readiness review.
Senior brand manager responsible for three brands, 41 SKUs and $148 million in net sales at 36.2 percent gross margin, sold through grocery, club and e-commerce. Lead a team of four brand and assistant brand managers and chair the monthly gate review that decides which concepts are funded. Retired 9 unprofitable SKUs and reinvested the margin into a club pack that reached 74 percent ACV weighted distribution in its first year, moving portfolio share from 9.8 percent to 11.6 percent.

Outline your brand management experience
Company, brand or category, city, dates, then the scale of the range inside the role header. Three to five bullets under each, and every bullet moves a commercial number, not an impression count.

The brand P&L and the range you owned
This is the section that separates a brand manager from every other marketing title, and it is the one most candidates leave off.
A brand manager is given a range and asked to make it more valuable. That means five specific things a reader wants to see stated, in plain figures, with the source and period attached.
| Line | What to write | Worked example |
|---|---|---|
| Range shape | SKU count, pack sizes, formats | 23 SKUs, 4 pack sizes, cartons and cans |
| Price architecture | Opening price point, mainline, premium tier, gap to private label | $2.29 opening, $4.49 mainline, $7.99 organic, 26 percent gap to private label |
| Distribution | ACV weighted distribution, channels, banner count | 79 percent ACV, grocery, club and e-commerce, 6 national banners |
| Share and velocity | Share of category and units per store per week, with source and period | 10.1 percent of shelf-stable broth, 1.9 units per store per week, syndicated scanner data, 52 weeks to June 2024 |
| Margin responsibility | Gross margin, trade budget, and what you could decide alone | 34.8 percent gross margin, $4.1 million trade and marketing budget, authority to delist below 0.4 units per store per week |
Range owned: 23 SKUs across 4 pack sizes, shelf-stable broth and condensed soup, cartons and cans.
Price architecture: $2.29 opening price point at 14.5 ounces, $4.49 mainline 32 ounce carton, $7.99 organic bone broth, 26 percent gap to private label.
Distribution and share: 79 percent ACV weighted distribution across 6 national banners plus club and e-commerce; 10.1 percent of the shelf-stable broth category on syndicated scanner data, 52 weeks to June 2024.
P&L responsibility: $61 million net sales, 34.8 percent gross margin, $4.1 million trade and marketing budget, delisting authority below an agreed velocity threshold.
Stage gate record: 2 line extensions carried through all 5 gates in 2 years, 1 concept stopped at the business case gate, 1 withdrawn at the post-launch review.
Then write the gate a new product had to clear before it launched, because every company's process differs and the reader wants to know which one you have lived inside. Name the gates in your own company's language: concept screen, business case, development, launch readiness, post-launch review. Say which ones you authored and which ones you chaired. Authoring a business case and chairing the decision are different levels of the same job.
State SKU count, net sales and gross margin in the same sentence, because together they describe a range and separately they describe nothing. Name the measurement source and period behind every share figure. Write the price architecture as actual shelf prices, not as "premium positioning". Say what you were allowed to decide without approval: a delist, a price move, a trade spend reallocation. Write the SKU you retired and the criterion you retired it on.
Do not claim P&L ownership if you held a marketing budget; say "owned a $4.1 million trade and marketing budget within a $61 million range" instead. Do not give a share number without its source and its 52 week or 13 week window. Do not describe a launch without saying which gates you cleared and who signed them. Do not list media impressions and gross margin in the same block, since they are evidence for different jobs. Do not round a margin figure you do not have in front of you.
Build a snapshot of your key skills
Twelve to fourteen entries in three groups: commercial, category and consumer, then systems. The commercial group goes first because it is the group the title is paid for.
Commercial: Brand P&L management, Gross margin and mix analysis, Price pack architecture, Trade spend planning and evaluation, Annual operating plan, Volume forecasting and forecast accuracy
Category and consumer: Syndicated scanner data analysis, Category review and planogram preparation, Assortment and SKU rationalisation, Concept and product testing, Claims substantiation with regulatory and legal review
Innovation: Stage gate business case authoring, Cost of goods and margin modeling for new items, Launch readiness and first shipment planning, Post-launch review and withdrawal decisions
Systems: SAP, Circana and NielsenIQ platforms, Excel financial modeling, Power BI, Trade promotion management software
Leave the tool names to the last line. In this occupation the systems are assumed and the commercial judgement is not.
List your education and certifications
Degree first, then any postgraduate qualification, then certifications with their issuing body and year. Brand management has no license, so this section is short and its job is to establish the commercial grounding rather than a gate.
Master of Business Administration, University of Cincinnati, Carl H. Lindner College of Business, Cincinnati, OH, 2023. Concentration in marketing and finance; capstone on price pack architecture in shelf-stable food.
Bachelor of Science, Marketing, Miami University, Oxford, OH, 2019. Minor in supply chain and operations management.
Certifications: Professional Certified Marketer, Marketing Management, American Marketing Association, 2023, certificate PCM-MM-2023-40517. Financial Modeling and Valuation Analyst, Corporate Finance Institute, 2022. Category Management Fundamentals, Category Management Association, 2021.
Choose the right layout and design
Single column, 11 point serif or clean sans, clear headings, no photograph, no logos of the brands you have worked on. Trademark use on a personal resume is an avoidable problem and adds nothing a sentence cannot.
Keep the range block as plain labeled lines rather than a graphic. Numbers in a chart or an infographic panel are invisible to a parser and awkward to quote in an interview, and the figures in this section are the ones you most want quoted back to you.
Brand manager job market and outlook
Brand managers are counted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics inside marketing managers, part of the advertising, promotions and marketing managers group, which is growing slightly faster than the average across all occupations.
| Measure | Value |
|---|---|
| Employment, advertising, promotions and marketing managers, 2025 | 454,800 |
| Projected change, 2025 to 2035 | 6 percent, +27,900 |
| Projected annual openings | About 36,300 |
| Typical entry-level education | Bachelor's degree |
| Median annual wage, marketing managers, May 2025 | $166,790 |
| Median annual wage, advertising and promotions managers, May 2025 | $133,660 |
Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025 wage data and 2025 to 2035 projections.
Where the money sits, by the industry you run a brand inside
The occupation median for marketing managers was $166,790 in May 2025, but the industry medians published alongside it move a long way around that figure: $192,600 in information, $172,580 in management of companies and enterprises, $172,350 in finance and insurance, $170,050 in professional, scientific and technical services, and $165,630 in wholesale trade (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).
Employment in the wider advertising, promotions and marketing managers group stood at 454,800 in 2025 and is projected to grow 6 percent by 2035, about 27,900 additional jobs, with roughly 36,300 openings a year across the decade (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025 to 2035 projections).
For a brand manager, the practical reading is that management of companies and enterprises, the group that holds most consumer goods head office marketing, pays above the occupation median. It is also where the P&L version of the job lives. A resume that documents margin, distribution and share is aimed squarely at those roles, while a resume of campaigns competes for the agency roles further down the pay distribution.
What salary you can expect as a brand manager
Marketing managers, the Handbook occupation that contains brand management, had a median annual wage of $166,790 in May 2025 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025). The adjacent advertising and promotions managers occupation had a median of $133,660 in the same cycle, which is closer to where many assistant and associate brand roles actually sit.
The spread is wide because the title covers very different amounts of business. An assistant brand manager on a $14 million line and a senior brand manager on a $148 million portfolio with four reports are both called brand people, and a conventional resume does not distinguish them at all. The range block does, which is the practical argument for writing it.
Three things move you up the band. Scale is first: net sales owned, SKU count and channel breadth. Margin authority is second, because the difference between holding a marketing budget and holding a gross margin line is the difference between two pay grades in most consumer goods companies. Third is sector, since the Handbook's May 2025 industry medians put information and finance well above the occupation median while other sectors sit below it.
Key takeaways for a brand manager resume

Brand manager resume questions, answered
How long should a brand manager resume be?
One page for an assistant brand manager and most first brand manager roles. Two pages once you have owned a range through a full annual plan, carried a product through a stage gate, and managed other brand people. The second page has to earn itself with numbers, not with a longer list of campaigns.
What if I never held the gross margin line?
Say what you did hold, precisely. "Owned a $4.1 million trade and marketing budget within a $61 million range, with the margin line held by the category director" is an honest and perfectly respectable sentence, and it will be read as more senior than a vague claim of P&L ownership that falls apart in the first interview question.
Can I put share and distribution figures from a syndicated data subscription on a resume?
You can state the measures you were responsible for, with the source described generically and the window named, as in "10.1 percent share of the shelf-stable broth category on syndicated scanner data, 52 weeks to June 2024". Do not reproduce licensed reports, do not attach screenshots, and check your employment agreement before quoting anything commercially sensitive.
How do I show new product work if nothing I launched has shipped yet?
Write the gates you have cleared. A concept that has passed the business case gate with an approved forecast and a signed cost of goods is real work, and naming the gate tells a reader exactly how far it went. State the launch date if one is set, and keep the forecast figure rather than the ambition.
Is brand management a marketing job or a general management job?
It is written as a marketing job and measured as a general management one. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts these roles inside marketing managers, whose median annual wage was $166,790 in May 2025 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025), but the work is a range with a margin line, a forecast and a stage gate. Write the resume for the second description and it will read correctly for both.
What does a brand manager resume need that a marketing manager resume does not?
Assortment and margin. A marketing manager can be fully described by a plan and a target. A brand manager cannot be described at all without the SKUs, the prices, the distribution and the gross margin, because those are the levers of the job. If your resume would still make sense with the product range deleted, it is not yet a brand manager resume.
