Summary
A CFO resume is a two page document about capital and counterparties rather than about the finance function. It states the capital structure you manage, the lenders and investors you sit in front of, the audit committee you serve, the reporting obligations your company's status creates, and what you put your own signature to. This guide gives you three adaptable versions and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook.
CFO resume examples by experience level
In short, a CFO resume is a two page document about the right-hand side of the balance sheet and the people who own it.
Running the finance function well is a prerequisite, not the job. Our finance director resume example is built for the function: statements, controls, the audit, the team, the cadence. If that is the role you are applying for, use it.
However, the chief financial officer job starts where the function ends. To begin with, you choose and maintain a capital structure. You sit in front of lenders, investors or a sponsor who can change your company's options in a meeting. In addition, you serve an audit committee rather than merely reporting to one. Moreover, your company's status creates reporting obligations that are yours specifically. Finally, you are a co-signer: your name goes on things next to the chief executive's.
Resume guide for a CFO resume
To that end, this guide and the corresponding CFO resume example will cover:
- How to write a CFO resume that is not a longer finance director resume
- Firstly, the capital and counterparty block that sizes you in five lines
- Then, three adaptable summaries: first chief financial officer role, sponsor-backed CFO and public company CFO
- Also, what "co-signer" means in practice, and why it belongs on the page
- Finally, current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook, and why the published band cannot see most of a CFO package
How to write a CFO resume
Overall, six blocks: contact header, summary, the capital and counterparty block, experience, qualifications and governance, and a short systems line. Two pages.
| Section | What it is answering | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Header | How big, how owned, how financed, who do you report to? | Under your name, three lines |
| Capital structure | What sits on the right-hand side, and who holds it? | Directly under the summary |
| Counterparties | Which lenders, investors, agencies and auditors do you face? | Same block, one line |
| Reporting status | Private, sponsor-owned, registrant, regulated? What does that oblige? | Same block, one line |
| Signature | What do you personally certify, attest or sign? | Same block, one line |
| Experience | What did you finance, refinance, restructure or raise, and when? | Reverse chronological, two roles deep |
The order matters. After all, a board chair recruiting a CFO assumes you can close the books. They are asking whether you have financed a company that looks like theirs, in front of counterparties that look like theirs, under obligations that look like theirs.
Run the finished file through the free ATS resume checker before you send it. Search firms and corporate portals both parse the document into structured fields, and two-column templates are where that breaks.
Choosing the best resume format for a CFO resume
Reverse chronological, two pages, with the last two roles carrying most of the words. Compress everything before your first controller or finance director role to a single progression line.
Therefore, put the capital and counterparty block above your experience, not inside it, because a CFO's scope does not travel with a single employer. A candidate who refinanced at one company and ran an initial public offering readiness program at another has a capital history that no reverse chronological listing displays well. Instead, give it its own block and let the roles carry the operating story.

Above all, three lines that place you in about four seconds. Revenue alone, however, does not: a $620 million company financed by a family shareholder and a $620 million company with a syndicated term loan, a convertible and a quarterly earnings call are different jobs, and the second line says which you have done.
Make use of a summary
In effect, four lines: the company and how it is owned, the capital structure, the counterparties, and one financing outcome with a number and a year.
First chief financial officer of a venture-backed diagnostics company, $54 million revenue, appointed from a finance director role to put a capital structure and a governance routine in place before a Series C. Raised $40 million of equity in 2015 and negotiated a $15 million venture debt facility alongside it, and built the first audit committee reporting pack, the first three statement model and the first set of covenant calculations the company had produced. Reported to the chief executive with a direct line to a four person board.
Chief financial officer of a $340 million industrial group owned by a private equity sponsor, carrying a $190 million capital structure across a unitranche facility and a revolving credit line with four lenders. Refinanced in 2019 on covenant terms that replaced two maintenance tests with one, took quarterly lender reporting from working day 20 to working day 12, and ran the sell-side diligence that supported a sale in 2021. Serve the audit committee and the sponsor's finance partner, and signed the compliance certificate each quarter.
Chief financial officer of a $620 million packaging group that has been an SEC registrant since 2024, with a $310 million capital structure of a $180 million term loan, a $70 million revolver and a $60 million convertible note. Took the company through registration readiness in 14 months, including two years of restated comparatives and remediation of a material weakness inherited in 2022, and now certify each quarterly and annual report alongside the chief executive. Report to the chief executive and serve an audit committee of four, with a private session at every meeting.
Right vs wrong: the same CFO summary, twice

| Carry a $310 million capital structure: a $180 million term loan, a $70 million revolver and a $60 million convertible note. | Responsible for all financing and treasury activities across the group. |
| Refinanced in 2022 on terms that replaced two maintenance covenants with one, with four lenders in the syndicate. | Successfully negotiated improved terms with our banking partners. |
| Certify each quarterly and annual report alongside the chief executive, and hold a private session with the auditor at every committee meeting. | Maintained strong relationships with auditors and the board. |
On one hand, the right column tells a board chair which version of the job you have held. On the other hand, the left column could describe a finance director at a private company with one bank, and frequently does.
Outline your experience
Then give company, sector, revenue, ownership, reporting status, capital structure, dates. Then five or six bullets on the current role and three on the one before, each one a financing event, a counterparty outcome or an obligation met.

Chief Financial Officer, Merrifield Packaging Group, Minneapolis, MN, $620 million revenue, SEC registrant since 2024, board of nine with an audit committee of four, June 2021 to Present
Carry a $310 million capital structure of a $180 million term loan, a $70 million revolver and a $60 million convertible note, with 11 institutions in the lender group and a rating maintained through the registration.
Delivered registration readiness in 14 months, including two restated comparative years, a rebuilt segment reporting basis and remediation of a material weakness inherited in 2022 and closed in the following cycle.
Certify each quarterly and annual report alongside the chief executive, supported by a sub-certification process I designed across nine reporting units and reviewed quarterly with internal audit.
Serve an audit committee of four with a standing private session with the external auditor at every meeting, and present the going concern and covenant analysis myself rather than delegating it.
Refinanced the term loan in 2023 ahead of registration, extending maturity by three years and replacing two maintenance covenants with one, which removed the quarterly cliff the prior structure had created.
Built the investor relations function from nothing: the first guidance framework, 42 investor meetings across two years, and a non-deal roadshow after the convertible issue.
State the capital structure, the reporting status and what you put your name to
Indeed, this is the block that decides a chief financial officer resume, and it is the one that a very strong finance director resume does not contain.
Specifically, five lines, and each of them answers a question a board chair has already formed. For example, what is the company financed with, and by whom. Who are the counterparties who can change your options. Then, what obligations follow from the company's status. What you personally sign. And what the auditor found while you held the pen.
Capital structure: $310 million across a $180 million term loan, a $70 million revolver drawn to $18 million and a $60 million convertible note issued 2023; net leverage 2.1 times against a 3.5 times covenant.
Counterparties: 11 institutions in the lender group with an agent bank, one rating agency, one external auditor, 38 institutional holders after registration, and a sponsor exited in 2024.
Reporting status and obligations: SEC registrant since 2024. Quarterly and annual reports, a disclosure committee I chair, a sub-certification process across nine reporting units, and segment reporting rebuilt on the basis used by the chief operating decision maker.
Signature: I certify each quarterly and annual report alongside the chief executive, sign the quarterly compliance certificate to the lender group, and sign the management representation letter to the auditor.
Control record: inherited a material weakness in 2022 relating to revenue cut-off at two acquired units; remediated in the following cycle, with the two subsequent audits closing with no material weakness reported.
Four of those five lines are not available to the layer below, and that is the point of writing them down.
Co-signer is a legal description, not a metaphor
Candidates write "partnered with the CEO" when the accurate and far stronger statement is that they sign next to them.
For a company with registered securities, the principal executive officer and the principal financial officer must each certify the annual and quarterly reports. The certification covers, among other things, that the signing officer has reviewed the report, that based on the officer's knowledge it "does not contain any untrue statement of a material fact", and that the financial statements "fairly present in all material respects the financial condition and results of operations" of the issuer; the officers also certify that they have disclosed to the auditors and the audit committee all significant deficiencies and material weaknesses in internal control and any fraud involving management (15 U.S.C. 7241). The implementing rule adds that a person required to provide a certification "may not have the certification signed on his or her behalf pursuant to a power of attorney or other form of confirming authority" (17 CFR 240.13a-14).
Nobody can sign it for you. One line naming what you certify and how you support it says more about the level you have operated at than any amount of language about business partnership.
If your company is private, the equivalent signatures are real too: the management representation letter to the auditor, the quarterly compliance certificate to a lender group, the borrowing base certificate, the covenant calculation. Name them. They are checkable and most candidates leave them off.
Build a snapshot of your key skills
For skills, similarly, twelve to fifteen entries in three groups, pitched at the level you operate. Also keep tools to one short line, because a chief financial officer skills list built on spreadsheet functions invites a question you do not want.
Capital and counterparties: Capital structure design, Debt raising and refinancing, Equity and convertible issuance, Rating agency engagement, Lender syndicate and agent bank management, Sponsor and shareholder reporting
Obligations and governance: Registration readiness, Quarterly and annual reporting, Disclosure committee chairmanship, Sub-certification design, Audit committee service and private sessions, Covenant compliance certification
Company and function: Investor relations and guidance, Merger and acquisition diligence and integration, Treasury and foreign exchange policy, Insurance and risk transfer, Finance operating model, Enterprise systems ownership
List your education, qualifications and governance roles
Short. A degree line, a professional qualification with its state or body, and then the governance exposure, which is the part a nomination committee studies.
Certified Public Accountant, Minnesota, active since 2008
Master of Business Administration, Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN, 2012
Bachelor of Science, Accounting, University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI, 2004
Governance: Audit committee service since 2018 as the executive attending; chair of the disclosure committee since 2024. Non-executive director and audit committee member of an unlisted engineering company since 2023.
Progression: audit senior, group financial controller, finance director, chief financial officer.
The last line does more work than it looks. Boards want to know whether you arrived through control and reporting, through treasury and capital markets, or through commercial finance, because the three produce different strengths.
Choose the right layout and design
Single column, two pages, 11 point, no photograph, no charts, no skill bars. Put the capital and counterparty block directly under the summary so it survives a ten second skim. Save as PDF, named plainly: konstantin-falkenrath-cfo-resume.pdf.
State the capital structure by instrument and size. Name the counterparty types and how many are in the lender group. Say what your company's status obliges, whether that is quarterly reporting, a covenant certificate or a sponsor pack. Name what you personally sign. Give the control record, including anything inherited and closed. Say which committee you serve and whether there is a private session.
Do not write "responsible for" anywhere on the page. Do not name a lender, investor, bidder or rating outcome that is not public. Do not put pricing, spreads or covenant headroom on a private facility into the document. Do not quote or attach an audit report, management letter or workpapers. Do not claim a refinancing or a listing you supported as one you led. Do not describe a capital structure you inherited unchanged as one you built.
CFO job market and outlook
However, the Occupational Outlook Handbook publishes no profile for the title "chief financial officer". The work sits across two published occupations: financial managers, which the Handbook describes as including controllers, treasurers, credit managers, cash managers and risk managers; and chief executives, reported inside the top executives group. The honest reading is a bracket.
| Occupation | Employment, 2025 | Projected change, 2025 to 2035 | Annual openings | Median annual wage, May 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Financial managers | 879,700 | 10 percent growth, +84,900 | About 65,600 | $166,570 |
| Chief executives | 291,600 | 3 percent growth, +9,300 | Published for top executives as a group | $213,990 |
Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025 wage data and 2025 to 2035 projections.
Meanwhile, financial managers is one of the faster growing management occupations, projected up 10 percent across the decade against 5 percent for top executives, with about 65,600 openings a year (BLS, 2025 to 2035 projections). In addition, typical entry is a bachelor's degree plus five years or more of experience in another business or financial occupation, and the Handbook names accountant, securities sales agent and financial analyst as the feeder roles (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, accessed 13 September 2026). That matters when you write the progression line: the occupation is entered from somewhere else, and boards read the route.
Industry moves the number more than the title does
Financial managers had a median annual wage of $166,570 in May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent under $94,310 and the highest 10 percent over $323,270 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025). Within that occupation the published industry medians were $174,170 in professional, scientific and technical services, $172,340 in management of companies and enterprises, $169,980 in finance and insurance, $164,400 in manufacturing and $139,810 in government, and nearly a third of all employment, 32 percent, sits in finance and insurance (BLS, May 2025 wage data and 2025 industry employment data).
At the upper bracket, chief executives had a median of $213,990, from under $75,700 to over $507,730, with an industry median of $358,310 in management of companies and enterprises (BLS, May 2025).
What none of that can see is the part a chief financial officer negotiates hardest. The federal wage survey collects straight-time gross pay, which includes base rates, commissions, incentive pay and production bonuses, and excludes year-end bonuses, profit-sharing payments, stock bonuses, severance pay and the employer cost of benefits (BLS, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey documentation, accessed 13 September 2026). For a sponsor-backed chief financial officer, a management equity plan is frequently the largest single component of the package, and it is invisible to every published federal figure.
What salary you can expect as a CFO
There is no published median for the job title, so the usable figures are the bracket above: $166,570 for financial managers and $213,990 for chief executives as May 2025 medians, with the financial managers range running from under $94,310 to over $323,270 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).
Four things, in fact, move a chief financial officer inside that bracket, and three of them are on the second line of your header. In particular, reporting status moves the number most: a registrant with quarterly reporting, a disclosure committee and personal certification is a different job from a private company filing nothing. Then capital structure complexity, because a syndicated facility with an agent bank, a convertible and a rating is a different workload from one bank and a term loan. Then industry, across the range above. Company size comes last, and matters less than most candidates assume.
Therefore, read the published number for what it measures: base pay plus regular incentive for an occupation, not a package, and for this role it cannot see the equity. Ask for the full structure, including vesting and what happens on a change of control.
Key takeaways for a CFO resume
- Firstly, lead with the capital structure by instrument and size, not with the finance function.
- Equally, name the counterparties: lender group, agent bank, rating agency, sponsor, holders, auditor.
- In addition, state what the company's reporting status obliges, and what you chair or design to meet it.
- Say what you personally sign, because nobody can sign it for you.
- Give the control record, including anything inherited and closed.
- Say which committee you serve and whether there is a private session with the auditor.
- Likewise, keep unannounced transactions, private pricing and any non-public counterparty off the page.
- Overall, two pages, with the capital block directly under the summary.

CFO resume questions, answered
What is the difference between a CFO resume and a finance director resume?
The counterparties and the signature. A finance director resume is built on the function: statements, controls, the external audit, the team and the reporting cadence, and our [finance director resume example](/resume/finance-director/) is written for that. A chief financial officer resume is built on what the function is financed by and answerable to: the capital structure, the lender group or the sponsor, the obligations that follow from the company's status, and the documents you personally sign. In a small company one person does both, so write both blocks.
I have never worked at a public company. Is that disqualifying?
No, and most chief financial officer posts are not at registrants. What matters is that you say plainly which obligations you have carried: a quarterly compliance certificate to a lender group, a borrowing base certificate, a sponsor reporting pack, a management representation letter, an audit committee private session. If the role is at a registrant and you have not been one, name the gap and the nearest thing you have done. Boards plan around a stated gap and get nervous about an implied one.
How much detail about financing terms can I put on the page?
Instrument, size, year and structural facts you are free to disclose. "A $180 million term loan, a $70 million revolver and a $60 million convertible issued 2023" is normal, and for a registrant much of it is already public. Pricing, spreads, fees, covenant headroom on a private facility, the identity of a lender who has not announced themselves and anything drawn from a credit paper are not. If even the size is sensitive, describe the shape: "a unitranche facility with four lenders and one maintenance covenant".
Should I put a material weakness on my CFO resume?
Your own record against one, yes, and it is one of the strongest things you can write. Say what was open when you arrived, what you rebuilt, and what the following cycles produced. What never belongs on the page is the audit report, the management letter, workpapers, or an unpublished finding at a company whose results are not public. Describe outcomes, never documents.
Does a CFO resume need an investor relations section?
Only if you have run one, and then one line inside the capital block is enough: the guidance framework, the meeting count, the events. What boards are testing is whether you can speak to holders without creating a disclosure problem, and a candidate who says "42 investor meetings across two years and a non-deal roadshow after the convertible issue" has answered that.
How long should a CFO resume be?
Two pages. The capital and counterparty block, two roles in detail, a control record and a governance line will not fit on one, and three pages at this level reads as a candidate who could not choose.
