Summary

A business development manager resume is a one to two page document about what you opened rather than what you closed: the partner and reseller agreements you signed, the segments and territories you entered first, the pipeline you sourced for someone else to close, and how long each of those took. This guide gives you three adaptable versions and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay for the occupations that contain the title.

Business Development Manager resume examples by experience level

A business development manager resume is a one to two page document about things that did not exist before you got there: a signed partner agreement, a segment nobody in the company had sold into, a territory with no accounts, a pipeline built out of cold ground.

That is a different document from a sales resume, and confusing the two costs candidates interviews in both directions. A sales manager is measured on a quota and a close rate; a business development manager is measured on what opened, how much converted later, and how long it took. If your resume reports a personal closing number and nothing else, a hiring director reading it for a partnerships role cannot tell whether you have ever opened anything.

Resume guide for a business development manager resume

To help, this guide and the corresponding business development manager resume example will cover:

  • How to write a business development manager resume, section by section
  • Where business development stops and sales begins, and how to write the boundary
  • Three adaptable summaries: first business development role, partner and channel manager, and head of business development
  • How to report sourced pipeline honestly when someone else closed the revenue
  • What the job market looks like and what you can expect to earn

How to write a business development manager resume

Six blocks: contact header, summary, the sourcing and partnership record, experience, skills, then education and certifications. As a rule, use one page for your first four years, two once you have carried a partner portfolio or opened a market.

The sourcing record goes directly under the summary because it settles the question the reader is holding: what kind of business development you do. The title covers at least four jobs: signing channel partners, opening new market segments, landing the first customers for a new product, and building an outbound pipeline for a sales team to close. All four are legitimate, but none are interchangeable, so a resume that does not say which one you did reads as none of them.

SectionWhat it is answeringWhere it goes

Expert Tip

Write the sales boundary in one sentence before you draft anything

Business development and sales are separated by a handoff, and every company puts it in a different place. Some managers stop at a qualified meeting, some carry the first deal with a new partner to signature and then hand the account over, some only sign and enable resellers.

Write your boundary as one plain sentence in the first role: "Sourced and qualified opportunities to a scoped proposal, then handed them to a named account executive who owned the close and the forecast."

That says what you are claiming credit for and stops the reader assuming you inflated a closing number. It is the first thing a hiring director asks about anyway.

Run the finished file through the free ATS checker before you send it. Commercial roles draw high volume and the first reader is usually a parser.

Choosing the best resume format for a business development manager resume

Reverse chronological, single column. In other words, one page for the first four years, two once you have a partner portfolio, a market entry, or a team.

The temptation is a functional layout, because business development careers look uneven: a long stretch of groundwork with nothing closed, then a cluster of signings. Resist it. The unevenness is the job, and a reader who sees that you spent eleven months opening a segment and then signed three agreements in a quarter understands business development. If your work is long cycle, put the cycle length on the page rather than hiding the quiet periods.

In practice, the second line is the whole screen. After all, partner count and sourced pipeline place you in a band immediately and say which version of business development you do. For example, a reader who sees "23 active partners" knows this is a channel job before reading a bullet.

Make use of a summary

For the summary, use four lines: what you open and for whom, the partner or segment count, one sourced number with its conversion and period, and where your work hands off.

First business development role adaptable resume summary example

Business development representative moving into a manager role, sourcing new accounts for a building controls manufacturer across four Midwestern states. Sourced 96 qualified opportunities worth $9.6 million over two years from a territory with no installed base, of which $2.1 million closed within the same period and a further $3.4 million was still open at handover. Partner and channel business development manager adaptable resume summary example

Business development manager for a building controls manufacturer, responsible for the mechanical contractor and systems integrator channel across eight states. Signed 9 reseller and integrator agreements in three years and took the partner channel from 11 percent to 29 percent of new bookings, with $34 million of partner-sourced pipeline against a $28 million sourcing target. Opened two segments the company had never sold into, first revenue in 14 months, on an average cycle of 11 months from first meeting to signature.

Head of business development adaptable resume summary example

Head of business development leading 4 business development managers for a building controls manufacturer, with 23 active partners producing 41 percent of new bookings and $61 million of partner-sourced pipeline. Entered the Canadian market with 3 distributor agreements and reached $18.4 million of territory revenue in the second full year. Rebuilt partner tiering and the enablement program across the portfolio, which lifted the share of partners producing revenue within their first year from 44 percent to 79 percent.

✅ Right❌ Wrong

By contrast, anyone can check the right column against a contract file and a customer relationship management report. The left column is what every application in the folder says, and it is the reason business development resumes are so hard to sort.

Outline your business development experience

Business Development Manager, Channel and New Markets, Stonewicket Building Systems, Kansas City, MO, October 2021 to Present

Building automation and controls manufacturer selling through mechanical contractors, systems integrators and distributors. Own partner recruitment and new segment entry across eight states. Sourcing target only; account executives own the close and forecast.

Signed 9 reseller and systems integrator agreements in three years, negotiating margin tiers, territory terms and minimum annual volume on each, with legal and finance sign-off before signature.

Took the partner channel from 11 percent to 29 percent of new bookings and partner-originated revenue from $4.2 million to $17.9 million.

Opened two segments the company had never sold into, cold storage and K-12 district retrofit, from a market study through to first revenue in 14 months.

Sourced $34 million of qualified pipeline against a $28 million target, handing 214 opportunities to named account executives at a 68 percent acceptance rate. Average cycle from first partner meeting to signed agreement is 11 months; the longest was 26 and is now the second largest partner in the region.

Separate what you sourced from what someone else closed

Above all, this is the section that decides a business development resume, and the one candidates get wrong most often, usually by borrowing a closing number that belongs to a colleague. Of course, a hiring director assumes, correctly, that you did not personally sign every deal in your pipeline. Instead, they want an honest ledger, and five lines do it.

LineWhat to writeWorked example
SourcedQualified opportunities and their value, from accounts with no prior relationship214 opportunities, $34 million, against a $28 million target

CycleTime from first contact to signature, and your longest live pursuit11 months average, 26 months longest, now the second largest partner
Adaptable resume sourcing and partnership record example

Sourced: 214 qualified opportunities worth $34 million over three years against a $28 million target, all from accounts with no prior purchase history.

Accepted: 68 percent accepted by account executives against a written standard covering budget, authority, scope and a confirmed next step.

Converted: $9.1 million closed within 18 months of handoff, by 4 account executives. Close ownership and forecast sat with them throughout.

Opened: 9 reseller and systems integrator agreements, 2 new segments, 1 new country. Partner channel moved from 11 percent to 29 percent of new bookings.

Cycle: 11 months average from first meeting to signature. Longest completed pursuit 26 months. Two pursuits past 18 months and still live.

Writing the sourcing record for interviews

Four notes on writing that block so it survives an interview.

Name the qualification standard. "Qualified" means nothing alone. Say what the bar was: budget confirmed, an owner named, a scope agreed, a next step in a calendar. Stating it describes a process; omitting it describes an opinion.

Report the acceptance rate, including the rejections. The share the sales team accepted is the most credible number on the page, because it is somebody else's judgment of your work. A 68 percent acceptance rate with 32 percent sent back reads better than a bare claim of 214 opportunities delivered.

Give the cycle length honestly, including the long one. A 26 month pursuit that became a major partner is better evidence than four quick wins.

Do not claim revenue you did not close. Write "sourced $34 million, of which $9.1 million closed within 18 months, closed by four account executives". That falls apart in no reference call; the alternative falls apart in the first.

Expert Tip

If you sign partners, the alliance credential ladder is worth naming

Business development has no license, but channel and alliance work has a credential ladder that very few resumes mention.

The Association of Strategic Alliance Professionals issues CA-AM as its foundational alliance management certification, requiring a minimum of three years of alliance management experience, an exam prep workshop, and an 85 question scenario-based exam, renewed every three years. Its senior credential, CSAP, requires CA-AM first, seven or more years of alliance management experience, at least 30 professional development hours since CA-AM, the ASAP Alliance Strategy and Leadership workshop, and a 150 question scenario-based exam, also renewed every three years (Association of Strategic Alliance Professionals, certification pages, accessed 13 September 2026).

Neither gets you hired alone. Both say your partnership work is structured rather than improvised, which is the doubt a channel hiring manager carries.

Third-party risk for international partners

If your partners sit outside the United States, add one line about third-party risk. The Department of Justice and Securities and Exchange Commission guidance on the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act states that "companies should be aware of the risks involved in engaging third-party agents or intermediaries" (A Resource Guide to the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, Second Edition, July 2020). Saying you ran risk-based due diligence before signing a foreign distributor, and naming who signed it off, describes a real part of the job that almost no resume mentions.

Build a snapshot of your key skills

For skills, list twelve to fourteen entries in four groups. However, keep closing verbs out; the reader already assumes you can hold a conversation with a stranger.

Adaptable resume skills example

Partner and channel: Partner recruitment and tiering, Reseller and distributor agreements, Margin and rebate structures, Partner enablement and certification programs, Joint business planning, Conflict and territory rules

Market entry: Segment sizing and prioritization, Competitive and pricing analysis for a new segment, Reference customer development, Regulatory and standards requirements for a new market, Distribution model selection

Commercial: Commercial terms and minimum volume negotiation, Business case writing, Pricing exceptions and approval routes, Third-party due diligence, Contract handover to legal

Systems: Salesforce, PartnerStack style partner portals, LinkedIn Sales Navigator, ZoomInfo, Excel territory and coverage models

List your education and certifications

Degree, then alliance or commercial certifications with issuing body and year, then market-specific training. Five or six lines.

Adaptable resume education and certifications example

Bachelor of Science, Business Administration, University of Missouri-Kansas City, Kansas City, MO, 2019. Concentration in marketing and supply chain management.

Certification of Achievement, Alliance Management (CA-AM), Association of Strategic Alliance Professionals, 2023, renewal due 2026.

Building controls fundamentals and BACnet systems training, completed 2022.

Continuing: contract law for commercial managers, completed 2024. Export compliance and third-party due diligence, completed 2025.

The last line is worth more than it looks. As a result, a business development manager trained on due diligence is someone a legal team will let near a distributor agreement without supervision.

Choose the right layout and design

For layout, use a single column, 11 point, real table markup for the sourcing record, no photograph, no partner logos. PDF unless the portal asks otherwise.

Also, do not put partner logos on the page. Those agreements were almost certainly signed under confidentiality terms, and a logo wall makes a legal team nervous. Instead, describe the partner by type and size: "a national mechanical contractor group with 40 branches" says more and creates no exposure.

Do

Say which of the four business development jobs you did. Write the handoff sentence in the first role. Give sourced pipeline and closed revenue as separate numbers with the closer named by role. Report the acceptance rate, including what came back. Give the average cycle and the longest. Name the agreements you signed by type, count and terms. Describe partners by type and size.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not report a closing number as if it were yours; the sales director who closed it will be called. Do not write "identified opportunities" without saying how many and what they were worth. Do not hide a quiet period; name the market entry running through it. Do not put partner logos on a personal resume. Do not call yourself a relationship builder, which is the assumption rather than the evidence.

Business development manager job market and outlook

First, note that the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes no Occupational Outlook Handbook profile for business development manager. The title is spread across published occupations depending on what the job does, so the honest way to read the market is to bracket it.

Occupation the title falls intoEmployment, 2025Projected change, 2025 to 2035Median annual wage, May 2025

Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025 wage data and 2025 to 2035 projections. The Managers, all other line comes from the Handbook's Data for Occupations Not Covered in Detail table, which publishes employment, projections and medians but no annual openings and no wage percentiles.

Sales managers, where most quota-carrying business development managers are counted, are projected to add 29,000 jobs between 2025 and 2035 against about 47,300 openings a year, so nearly all vacancies are replacements (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025 to 2035 projections).

Statistical insight

The channel side of the market is flat, which is why partner numbers matter

Wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives, which holds most channel-facing commercial work, numbered 1,571,400 in 2025 and are projected at 0 percent change through 2035, a decline of 7,700 jobs, with about 123,400 openings a year (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025 to 2035 projections). Within it, representatives selling technical and scientific products had a median of $104,920 in May 2025 against $72,080 for everyone else (BLS, May 2025).

Sales managers grow faster from a smaller base: 650,100 jobs in 2025, 4 percent growth, median $148,270 (BLS, May 2025). Their industry medians split sharply, from $174,440 in finance and insurance and $173,700 in professional, scientific and technical services down to $100,000 in retail trade (BLS, May 2025).

Read those two lines together and the market becomes legible. Volume commercial work is flat and being replaced rather than added; the paid growth is in technical products and in management of the commercial function. A resume showing technical depth and a partner portfolio is aimed at the half of the distribution still moving.

What salary you can expect as a business development manager

There is no published median for the job title, so the range you can quote depends on which occupation your role sits in.

If your job carries a quota and a team, sales managers had a median annual wage of $148,270 in May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent under $73,170 and the highest 10 percent over $290,540 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025). For market and segment development without a closing quota, marketing managers had a median of $166,790 in the same cycle (BLS, May 2025). If it is field-facing channel work, wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives had a median of $76,460, rising to $104,920 for technical and scientific products (BLS, May 2025).

In practice, three things move you through those bands. Product complexity comes first: the technical and non-technical medians inside the same sales representative occupation differ by roughly $33,000, more than most title changes are worth. Industry, for example, is second, worth about $74,000 at the median between finance and insurance and retail trade within sales management (BLS, May 2025). Third is whether you carry partners or only prospects, because a signed reseller agreement produces revenue after you leave the room.

Also, pay splits between base and variable, and the variable half is set against sourcing targets, partner signing bonuses and revenue kickers. Those are negotiated from the numbers on your resume, so the sourcing record is worth money at offer stage too.

Key takeaways for a business development manager resume

  1. To start, say which of the four business development jobs you did: channel, segment entry, new product, or outbound sourcing.
  2. Then write the sales handoff as one sentence in the first role on the page.
  3. Similarly, report sourced pipeline and closed revenue as two separate numbers.
  4. In addition, give the acceptance rate the sales team applied to your opportunities.
  5. Name the agreements you signed: count, type and the commercial terms you negotiated.
  6. Next, give the average cycle length and the longest completed pursuit.
  7. Finally, describe partners by type and size, never by logo.
  8. Add the alliance credential and the due diligence training if you sign third parties.

Business development manager resume questions, answered

What is the difference between a business development manager and a sales manager on a resume?

A sales manager's resume reports a team, a quota and an attainment figure. A business development manager's reports what opened: agreements signed, segments entered, pipeline sourced, and how long each took. Applying for sales management, lead with the team number; applying for business development, lead with the sourcing record and state who owned the close.

How long should a business development manager resume be?

One page for your first four years, two once you carry a partner portfolio, have opened a market, or manage other business development people. The second page has to carry a second market or channel, not a longer list of prospecting activities.

Can I put revenue on my resume if the sales team closed it?

Yes, with the attribution stated. "Sourced $34 million of qualified pipeline, of which $9.1 million closed within 18 months, closed by four account executives" is accurate, checkable and reads as senior. Presenting the closed figure as your own is the most common exaggeration here and the easiest to catch in a reference call.

What do I write when a long pursuit has not closed yet?

Write it as live work with its elapsed time and current stage. "Two pursuits past 18 months and still live, both at contract review" is real evidence in a job defined by long cycles. Give the stage in the buyer's language: at legal review, in procurement, awaiting a board date.

Which certifications actually help a business development manager?

On the channel and alliance side, the Association of Strategic Alliance Professionals ladder is what a hiring manager recognizes: CA-AM requires three years of alliance management experience and an 85 question exam, and CSAP requires CA-AM plus seven or more years and a 150 question exam, both renewed every three years (ASAP certification pages, accessed 13 September 2026). Beyond that, contract and export compliance training carries more weight than another sales methodology course.

How do I move from sales into business development?

Change the unit of measurement. Pull out the accounts you opened rather than grew, the first deals in a segment, the partner relationships you started, and the pipeline you built with no inbound. Then add the cycle length, because what is being screened for is patience with a long, uncertain pursuit rather than closing skill.
