Summary
A business development resume is the file you write when the postings you have shortlisted all say business development and all describe different jobs. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, a map of what the phrase means at each company stage and in each sector, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay across the five published occupations that contain the title.
Business Development resume examples by experience level
In fact, business development is the least standardized job title in commercial work, and that is the problem this page exists to solve.
Open five postings with that title. For example, one is a cold outbound seat with a meetings target. Another is signing resellers. Similarly, one is finding the first customers for a product nobody has bought yet. Another, in contrast, is major gifts at a university, where development has meant fundraising for decades. Finally, one is corporate development, which is mergers and acquisitions wearing a friendlier name. However, employers advertise them in the same words and hire on entirely different evidence.
So a business development resume has one job before any other: to say which of those jobs you have done, in the first line, in language the reader already uses. In short, everything else is downstream of that decision.
Resume guide for a business development resume
To that end, this guide and the corresponding business development resume example will cover:
- To begin with, how to write a business development resume, section by section
- Then, the five shapes of the job, the evidence behind each hire, and what the phrase means at each company stage
- Also, three adaptable summaries: entering, practicing, and leading business development
- Finally, what the market looks like across five published occupations, and what each pays
How to write a business development resume
Six blocks: contact header, a summary aimed at one shape, a record block, experience, skills, then education and credentials. One page while you are entering, two once you have opened something substantial.
Specifically, the record block is where the specific numbers live, and which numbers those are depends on the shape, which is why you have to settle the shape first. A meetings-booked figure is strong evidence for one posting and irrelevant for another.
| Section | What it is answering | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Target line and summary | Which of the five business development jobs is this person applying for? | Top, rewritten per posting |
| Record block | The two or three numbers that matter for that shape | Directly under the summary |
| Experience | What existed after you that did not exist before? | Reverse chronological |
Write the boundary sentence once and put it in every version
Whatever shape you do, there is a handoff somewhere, and a reader who cannot locate it assumes you have overstated something.
Write it as one plain sentence and place it in the first role: "Sourced and qualified to a scoped proposal, then handed to a named account executive who owned the close and the forecast." Or: "Built the case and the model; the corporate development team ran diligence and the negotiation."
This removes the most common doubt about a business development file, which is that the numbers on it belong to somebody else. How to report sourced against closed revenue is covered on our business development manager resume example.
Run each version through the ATS resume checker. Also, commercial postings draw very high volume, and the words that change between your versions are the ones the screen matches.
Choosing the best resume format for a business development resume
Reverse chronological, single column, one page until you have opened something worth a second page.
Of course, the functional format is tempting for a real reason: business development careers look lumpy. Long stretches of groundwork produce nothing, then three things land in a quarter. Refuse it anyway. However, the lumpiness is the job, and a reader who understands the work reads a quiet period followed by a cluster as evidence of patience.
If you have worked more than one shape, do not present them as one career. Two shapes described accurately is a stronger page than one blurred claim.

Above all, the second line is the target line, rewritten for every application. It names the shape and the sector, in that order: the shape decides whether the reader keeps reading and the sector decides how fast you would be useful.
Make use of a summary
In effect, four lines, rewritten per shape: what you open and for whom, the two numbers that matter for that shape, where your work hands off, and what you are aiming at next.
Business development representative at an agricultural technology company, moved across from three years of grain quality and customer support work, which is why the calls get returned. Booked 118 first meetings from cold outreach across six states in 18 months, of which 41 became qualified opportunities at an average contract value of $38,000. Work to a meetings and qualification target only; account executives own the close and the forecast. Targeting outbound and new-account business development roles in agriculture and food supply.
Business development lead for an agricultural services company, working two of the five shapes of the job: opening new segments and landing the first customers for new service lines. Opened the ethanol co-product segment from a market study to a first signed contract in 19 months, and have opened 47 accounts with no prior purchase history worth $6.2 million of first-year contracted revenue. Sell to co-op general managers and plant operations directors, with deal values from $40,000 to $420,000, and hand accounts to account management at first renewal.
Director of business development at an agricultural services company, leading three people across two distinct shapes of the work: new segment entry and a small reseller program. Responsible for $14.8 million of new-logo contracted revenue over three years, two new state territories and one service line taken from proposal to its first eleven customers. Wrote the one-page shape definition each of my roles is now hired and measured against, which ended the habit of judging a segment-entry seat on a monthly meetings number.
Right vs wrong: the same business development summary, twice
| ✅ Right | ❌ Wrong |
|---|---|
| Opened the ethanol co-product segment from market study to first signed contract in 19 months. | Identified and pursued new business opportunities in emerging markets. |
| 47 accounts opened with no prior purchase history, $6.2 million of first-year contracted revenue. | Consistently exceeded revenue targets through strategic prospecting. |
| Sell to co-op general managers and plant operations directors, $40,000 to $420,000 per deal. | Built and maintained relationships with key decision makers at all levels. |
In contrast, the wrong column would fit any of the five jobs, which is the same as fitting none of them. The right column tells a reader within four seconds whether to keep reading, and that is all a summary can usefully do.
Outline your business development experience
Employer, what it sells, your territory or segment, the shape you worked, dates, then the boundary line. Three to five bullets per role, each naming something that did not exist before you.

Business Development Lead, New Segments, Tamarack Bend Agricultural Services, Des Moines, IA, May 2022 to Present
Agricultural services company selling grain handling, storage audit and logistics services to co-ops, ethanol plants and independent elevators across the upper Midwest. My seat covers new segments and new service lines only; account management owns renewals.
Opened the ethanol co-product segment, which the company had never sold into, from a market study through pricing and a reference customer to a first signed contract in 19 months.
Opened 47 accounts with no prior purchase history, worth $6.2 million of first-year contracted revenue, at deal values between $40,000 and $420,000.
Took the grain storage audit service from a proposal I wrote to its first 11 paying customers inside a year, setting the pricing and building the two reference sites.
Sell to co-op general managers, plant operations directors and grain merchandisers, a three-person buying group rather than a single decision maker.
Hand each new account to account management at first renewal with a written handover; 39 of the 47 renewed at least once.
Longest completed pursuit ran 26 months and is now the second largest account in the segment; two are past 18 months and still live.
The five shapes of business development, and which one your resume is aimed at
Indeed, employers advertise the five jobs below as business development, and each hires on different evidence.
| Shape | What it actually is | What the page must show |
|---|---|---|
| Outbound sourcing | Creating first meetings and qualified opportunities from cold ground | Activity, qualification standard, acceptance by the sales team |
| New segment or market entry | Selling into an industry, geography or customer type the company has never served | Time from study to first revenue, the segment, the reference customer |
| New product introduction | Finding the first buyers for something with no track record | First customers by name of role, pricing set, references built |
| Channel and partnerships | Signing and enabling resellers, distributors and alliances | Agreements signed, commercial terms, partner-sourced revenue |
| Corporate development | Sourcing and evaluating acquisitions, joint ventures and licensing | Deals screened, the model, who ran diligence |
Three rules follow.
Three rules for aiming your business development resume
Pick one shape per application and rewrite the target line. Not the field, the shape. You are deciding which true things sit in the reader's first eight seconds.
Use the unit that shape is measured in. Meetings and qualified opportunities for outbound; months to first revenue for segment entry; first customers and references for new product introduction; agreements and partner-sourced revenue for channel; deals screened for corporate development. Reporting the wrong unit is the fastest way to look like you have not done the job.
Say what you did not own. Every shape has a boundary, and naming it is what makes the rest of the numbers believable.
Moreover, company stage changes the same five shapes again. For instance, at an early-stage company, business development usually means finding the first buyers and the first partners at once, with untested pricing. Meanwhile, at growth stage it means outbound sourcing into a defined segment. At a mature company it means segment entry, channel or corporate development, because a sales organization already covers the core market. Describing the stage as well as the shape, moreover, tells a reader what kind of ambiguity you are used to.
Business development, sales, marketing and partnerships are four different claims
These four words are used loosely in conversation and precisely in hiring, and mixing them up on a resume is expensive.
Sales owns a quota, a forecast and a close. If your page reports an attainment percentage and a personal closing number, it is a sales resume whatever the header says, and our sales representative resume example is written for that. Marketing owns demand, positioning and a budget. Partnerships owns agreements with other companies and the revenue flowing through them, which is business development in its channel shape.
Business development, properly used, owns what did not exist before. If you can point at something on your page that was not there before you arrived, you are writing the right document.
Build a snapshot of your key skills
For skills, similarly, twelve to fourteen entries in four groups, and keep closing adjectives out of it. After all, the reader assumes you can talk to a stranger; what they cannot assume is that you can size a market or read a contract.
Opening work: Cold outreach and sequencing, Qualification standards, Segment sizing, Reference customer development, Pricing for an untested offer, Buying group mapping
Commercial: Proposal and business case writing, Commercial terms negotiation, Margin and territory terms, Contract handover to legal, Third-party due diligence
Sector: Grain handling and storage, Ethanol co-product logistics, Co-op and independent elevator operations, Agricultural services procurement cycles
Systems: Salesforce, HubSpot sequences, LinkedIn Sales Navigator, ZoomInfo, Excel territory and coverage models
List your education and certifications
Degree, then any commercial or sector training with the issuing body and year. Five or six lines is enough, and sector training is usually worth more here than another sales methodology course.

In particular, two credentials attach to two of the five shapes and almost never appear on a general business development resume.
If your work is fundraising, which is what development means across universities, hospitals and nonprofits, the recognized credential is the CFRE. CFRE International awards it on a points system requiring 80 education points, 36 professional practice points and 55 professional performance points, all earned within five years of the application except academic degrees, which do not expire; approved candidates have up to one year to sit the examination, and holders recertify every three years against 45 education, 30 professional practice and 40 professional performance points (CFRE International, accessed 14 September 2026).
If your work is in securities or financial services, licensing rather than certification is the gate: the Bureau of Labor Statistics states that "the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) is the main licensing organization for the securities industry" (Occupational Outlook Handbook, securities, commodities and financial services sales agents, published 27 August 2026). Therefore, put the registrations you hold and their dates on the page; they are checkable and they decide what you may legally do.
Choose the right layout and design
In general, single column, 11 or 12 point, plain headings, no photograph, no partner or customer logos. PDF unless the portal asks otherwise.
The logo wall deserves a warning. A page of customer or partner marks makes a legal team uneasy, because the company opened most of those relationships under confidentiality terms. Instead, describe the account by type and size: "a six-plant ethanol producer" creates no exposure and carries more information.
Name which of the five shapes you do, in the first line, and rewrite it per posting. Use the unit that shape is measured in. State the company stage as well as the sector. Write the boundary sentence in every role. Describe accounts by type and size. Give the longest pursuit as well as the average. Name the buying group.
Do not present a quota attainment figure and call it business development; that is a sales claim. Do not write "identified new opportunities" with no count and no value. Do not blur two shapes into one to look broader. Do not put customer or partner logos on a personal resume. Do not hide a quiet period; name the segment entry running through it.
Business development job market and outlook
The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes no Occupational Outlook Handbook profile for business development, because the phrase is a job description rather than an occupation. As a result, depending on the shape and the sector, BLS counts the same title in at least five different published occupations.
| Sector | What business development usually means there | Published occupation it is counted in | Employment 2025 | Change 2025 to 2035 | Annual openings | Median annual wage, May 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Software and services with a sales team | Outbound sourcing and new logos | Sales managers | 650,100 | 4 percent, +29,000 | About 47,300 | $148,270 |
| Industrial and manufacturing | Channel, distributor and new segment work | Wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives | 1,571,400 | 0 percent, -7,700 | About 123,400 | $76,460 |
| Financial services | Origination and capital raising | Securities, commodities and financial services sales agents | 531,000 | 1 percent, +7,500 | About 35,100 | $78,660 |
| Nonprofit, health systems and universities | Fundraising and major gifts | Fundraisers | 140,900 | 6 percent, +7,800 | About 10,000 | $72,550 |
| Agencies, media and marketing services | New business and market development | Advertising, promotions and marketing managers | 454,800 | 6 percent, +27,900 | About 36,300 | $165,780 |
Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025 wage data and 2025 to 2035 projections, published 27 August 2026.
Two rows deserve a second look. Wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives is the largest, at 1,571,400 jobs and about 123,400 openings a year, projected at no change through 2035, a decline of 7,700 jobs; within it, representatives selling technical and scientific products had a median of $104,920 in May 2025 against $72,080 for everyone else (BLS, May 2025). Fundraisers is the smallest; even so, it grows at 6 percent and is the only row that uses development in its original sense.
One phrase, five occupations, and a median range of more than $90,000
The five published occupations that contain business development work had May 2025 medians of $72,550 for fundraisers, $76,460 for wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives, $78,660 for securities, commodities and financial services sales agents, $148,270 for sales managers and $165,780 for advertising, promotions and marketing managers, with marketing managers alone at $166,790 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).
Growth rates diverge just as sharply: fundraisers and the advertising, promotions and marketing managers group are both projected to grow 6 percent from 2025 to 2035, sales managers 4 percent and securities agents 1 percent, while wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives are projected at no change, a loss of 7,700 jobs (BLS, 2025 to 2035 projections, published 27 August 2026).
So the choice of shape is not only a writing decision. It decides which occupational curve you are standing on and which pay distribution you are negotiating inside.
What salary you can expect in business development
There is no published median for the job title, so the number you can quote in a negotiation depends on which occupation above your seat sits in. The medians run from $72,550 to $166,790 in May 2025, and the percentile spread inside each is wide: sales managers ran from under $73,170 to over $290,540, securities agents from under $48,040 to over $212,880, and fundraisers from under $46,630 to over $115,820 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).
In addition, three things move you inside a band. The first, for example, is product complexity, worth about $33,000 at the median inside the wholesale and manufacturing sales representative occupation alone, where technical and scientific products pay $104,920 against $72,080 (BLS, May 2025). The second is sector: the gap between the fundraiser median and the marketing manager median is more than $94,000 for work described in very similar language. The third is whether the thing you opened keeps producing after you leave the room, which is why employers price segment entry and channel work above pure outbound sourcing.
Pay here also splits between base and variable, and employers set the variable half against targets drawn from the shape of your seat. A candidate who arrives with the right unit already on the page is negotiating from evidence rather than from a story.
Key takeaways for a business development resume
- Firstly, decide which of the five shapes you are applying for, and put it and the sector in the target line, rewritten per posting.
- Secondly, report the unit you measure that shape in, not the unit you like best.
- Name the company stage as well as the sector; it says what ambiguity you can work in.
- Write the boundary sentence in every role, so the numbers are believable.
- Give the longest pursuit as well as the average, because the cycles here are long.
- Describe accounts and partners by type and size, never by logo, and if your work is fundraising or securities put the credential or the registration on the page.

Business development resume questions, answered
What is the difference between business development and sales?
Sales owns a quota, a forecast and a close, and a sales resume reports attainment. Business development owns what did not exist before: a segment, a first customer, an agreement, a meeting with someone who had never heard of the company. They overlap most in outbound sourcing. If your strongest number is a personal closing figure, you are writing a sales resume.
How do I write one resume that works across several business development postings?
You do not send one. Keep a master file holding every true bullet you could use, and for each posting copy it, delete what does not serve that shape, move the relevant block to the top and rewrite the target line. Nothing is invented; you are choosing which true things the reader sees first.
I have done two shapes of business development. Should I pick one?
Pick one per application and keep the other on the page in compressed form. Someone who has done outbound sourcing and segment entry is the stronger segment-entry candidate, provided the page makes clear which is being offered. What fails is blending the two into a vague claim of broad commercial experience.
What do I put on a business development resume with no business development experience?
Write the openings you already have, whatever they were called: a route you built from nothing, a service line you proposed and then delivered, a customer type nobody in your team had served, a partner relationship you started. Then add the sector knowledge, which is often the real reason a company would hire you, and be honest that you have not carried a sourcing target.
Does business development mean fundraising?
In nonprofits, universities and health systems, yes; the development office is the fundraising office. That work is counted federally under fundraisers, an occupation of 140,900 in 2025 projected to grow 6 percent to 2035 with a median of $72,550 in May 2025 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, published 27 August 2026). If you are moving between the two senses of the word, say which one your record is in.
How do I show progress when nothing has closed yet?
Give elapsed time and stage, in the buyer's language rather than yours: at legal review, in procurement, awaiting a board date, waiting on a capital cycle. Then give your longest completed pursuit as calibration. Where segment entry can run eighteen months to first revenue, describing a live pursuit precisely demonstrates the patience the job requires.
