Application for Business Development Manager, Sedgemoor Crop Services

Dear Ms. Ingoldsby,

I am applying for the Business Development Manager post at Sedgemoor Crop Services, and I am applying for the new segment half of it rather than the outbound half. My current seat covers new segments and new service lines only: 47 accounts opened with no prior purchase history, worth $6.2 million of first-year contracted revenue, at deal values between $40,000 and $420,000. I carry no renewal number, because account management takes every account at its first renewal.

The work closest to your posting is the ethanol co-product segment, which my employer had never sold into. I ran the market study, set the pricing with our finance team, built two reference sites from customers who agreed to be visited, and took the segment from the first conversation to a signed contract in 19 months. The part that took the time was not selling; it was working out that the buying group is three people rather than one, a co-op general manager, a plant operations director and a grain merchandiser, and that a proposal which does not answer all three of them stops at the second meeting.

Sedgemoor has moved into independent elevator work in two new states this year, and the posting covers both segment entry and a small reseller program. On segment entry I could start without a ramp, because the buying groups are the same people I sell to now. On the reseller side I should be straightforward with you: I have supported partner agreements, including the margin and territory terms, but I have not owned a channel. If that half of the seat is the larger half, I would want to talk about how it is weighted before either of us spends more time on it.

I hold the Salesforce Certified Administrator credential and completed a commercial contracts course for non-lawyers in 2024, which is why I can take an agreement to legal in a usable state rather than as a set of questions. I can start with six weeks of notice. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, Nkechi Balogun

Summary

A business development cover letter names which version of the job you are applying for, gives one thing you opened from nothing, and says plainly what you have supported rather than owned. This guide gives you a full adaptable letter, the openings that place you in a shape within one sentence, and how to write a long pursuit that has not closed.

Business Development cover letter examples by experience level

A business development cover letter has to do something no other commercial letter does: establish which job you think you are applying for.

The title covers outbound sourcing, new segment entry, new product introduction, channel and partnerships, and corporate development. A hiring manager who advertises one of those five receives applications from people who have done the other four, and most never say which. The letter that says which is easier to read than everything else in the folder.

Expert Tip

Name the version of the job in your first sentence

Almost every business development letter opens by describing the writer. Open by describing the job instead.

"I am applying for the Business Development Manager post, and for the new segment version of it rather than the outbound version" is an unusual first sentence. It shows you read the posting closely enough to tell which shape it is, and tells the reader which numbers to weigh.

Then give two numbers in that shape's own unit, taken from the table below. A candidate who reports the wrong unit reads as somebody describing a job they have not done.

Dear Ms. Ingoldsby,

Say which of the five business development jobs you are applying for

The posting is really aboutOpen your letter withThe number to lead on
Outbound sourcingThe territory and qualification standard you worked toMeetings created, qualified opportunities, acceptance rate
New segment or market entryThe segment nobody had sold intoMonths from study to first revenue

If the posting covers two of these, say which one you are strong in and which one you are not.

Writing the shape you have supported but not owned

This is the paragraph most candidates skip, and it is worth more than another success story. Postings are usually written by someone combining two jobs into one budget line, so the letter that admits which half is thinner is more persuasive than one implying command of everything.

Write it in three parts. What you have actually done in that shape, stated precisely: drafted and redlined the agreements, sat in the negotiations without leading them. What you have not done: owned the channel number, signed the agreement, set the margin tiers. And what you would want to know: how the two halves of the seat are weighted.

Do

Name which version of the job you are applying for in the first sentence. Give two numbers in that version's own unit. Describe one thing you opened, from nothing to first revenue. State plainly what you have supported rather than owned. Name one concrete thing about their market.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not present a quota attainment figure; it answers a different question. Do not claim a closing number that belonged to an account executive. Do not write a letter that would fit all five shapes. Do not describe yourself as a relationship builder.

Statistical insight

The title maps to five occupations, and they pay very differently

There is no federal occupation called business development, so the title is counted wherever the work actually sits. In May 2025 the medians were $72,550 for fundraisers, $76,460 for wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives, $78,660 for securities, commodities and financial services sales agents, $148,270 for sales managers and $165,780 for the advertising, promotions and marketing managers group (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, published 27 August 2026).

Growth diverges too. Fundraisers and the advertising, promotions and marketing managers group are projected to grow 6 percent from 2025 to 2035, sales managers 4 percent and securities agents 1 percent, while wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives are projected at no change, a loss of 7,700 jobs against about 123,400 openings a year (BLS, 2025 to 2035 projections).

Your reader works inside one of those occupations and uses its vocabulary, so write in the units of the sector you are applying into, not the one you are leaving.

Length, format and sending it

One page, four paragraphs, 250 to 400 words, PDF unless the portal asks otherwise.

Address a person; commercial teams are small and publicly listed, and a generic salutation on a specific letter reads as a template that was nearly personalized.

Spend twenty minutes on their market before you write, not on their culture page. A new geography, a segment they have just entered, a product with no reference customers yet: any of those gives you the sentence the third paragraph needs. Keep every figure identical to your resume. Our business development resume example uses the same record, and the free ATS checker reads the file before a person does.

Key takeaways

  1. Say which of the five business development jobs the posting is, and which you are.
  2. Give two numbers in that shape's own unit.
  3. Spend the second paragraph on one thing you opened from nothing.
  4. Name the buying group; most of these deals have three people.
  5. State what you have supported rather than owned, in specific terms.
  6. Name one real thing about their market.
  7. One page, a named recipient, figures matching the resume.

Business development cover letter questions, answered

How long should a business development cover letter be?

One page, four paragraphs, 250 to 400 words. The judgment your reader is making, whether you have done their version of the job, is settled in the first three sentences.

Can I use a closing number in the letter if the account executive closed it?

Only with the attribution attached. "Sourced and handed 41 qualified opportunities, of which four closed inside the year, closed by two account executives" is accurate and reads as senior. A bare closing figure invites a reference call that will not go your way.

What do I write if I am moving into business development from an operational role?

Lead with the sector, because it is the reason they would read you at all, then name the openings you already have: a service you proposed and delivered, a customer type nobody had served. Say clearly that you have not carried a sourcing target; honesty about the gap makes the rest believable.

How do I write about a pursuit that is still open?

Give elapsed time and stage in the buyer's language: at legal review, in procurement, awaiting a board date. Then give a completed pursuit of similar length as calibration. Describing a live pursuit precisely is evidence of the patience the job needs.

Should I mention a certification or a registration?

Only where it attaches to the shape. Fundraising work has the CFRE, awarded by CFRE International on a points system and recertified every three years (CFRE International, accessed 14 September 2026). Securities work is licensed rather than certified; BLS notes that "the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) is the main licensing organization for the securities industry" (Occupational Outlook Handbook, published 27 August 2026).
