Application for Business Development Manager, Partnerships, Barrowfield Building Group

Dear Ms. Ekstrand,

I am applying for the Business Development Manager, Partnerships post at Barrowfield Building Group. My work is channel and new segment entry rather than direct selling: over the last three years I have signed 9 reseller and systems integrator agreements for a building controls manufacturer and taken the partner channel from 11 percent of new bookings to 29 percent.

The piece of work closest to what you have advertised is a segment entry. We had never sold into cold storage, so I spent four months on the standards, the refrigeration contractors who actually specify controls in that market, and what our product would need before anyone would quote it. First revenue landed 14 months after the study, and the segment now carries $6.3 million of annual bookings. Across the same period I sourced $34 million of qualified pipeline against a $28 million target, handing 214 opportunities to named account executives at a 68 percent first-time acceptance rate. They owned the close and the forecast; my number was what opened.

Your posting describes a distributor network that stops at the Mississippi and a plan to move west. That is the problem I spent last year on in a different product category, including the part where three of the best candidate partners already carry a competing line and the conversation has to start from what you can offer them rather than what they can do for you. My average cycle from first meeting to signed agreement is 11 months, and my longest completed pursuit took 26 and became our second largest partner in the region.

I hold the CA-AM alliance management certification from the Association of Strategic Alliance Professionals and completed a Bureau of Industry and Security export control seminar before our first cross-border distributor discussions. I can give four weeks' notice. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, Nadiya Kalinowski

Summary

A business development manager cover letter names the thing you opened that did not exist before: an agreement you signed, a segment you entered, or a pipeline you built from cold ground. This guide gives you a full adaptable letter, the sentence that separates business development from sales, how to write about a pursuit that is still running, and the openings that get a commercial file read twice.

Business Development Manager cover letter examples by experience level

A business development manager cover letter is a one-page letter that names one thing you opened, says how long it took, and states plainly who closed the revenue behind it.

It has a harder job than a sales letter. A sales letter can lead with a number and let the number argue. Business development produces its results later and through other people, so the letter has to make a reader believe in work whose payoff sat somewhere further down the year.

Expert Tip

Say who closed it, in the same paragraph as the number

The doubt a hiring director carries into a business development letter is that the candidate is claiming somebody else's revenue. Most applicants either ignore it or feed it by writing "delivered $9.1 million in new business".

Answer it inside the sentence: "sourced $34 million of qualified pipeline, of which $9.1 million closed within eighteen months, closed by four account executives who owned the forecast".

That reads as more senior, not less. Only somebody who has worked in a real commercial organization writes the attribution correctly, and the reader recognizes it instantly. It also opens the door to the follow-up you want, which is how you and the sales team divided the work.

Openings that work

Instead ofUse
I am a results-driven business development professional with a proven track recordMy work is channel and new segment entry rather than direct selling
I am writing to express my interest in your business development roleI am applying for the Business Development Manager, Partnerships post, and I have signed 9 partner agreements in three years
I have a passion for building relationships and driving growthI took the partner channel from 11 percent of new bookings to 29 percent
I have consistently exceeded my sales targetsI sourced $34 million of qualified pipeline against a $28 million target; account executives closed $9.1 million of it

What counts as evidence when the sales team closed it

Business development produces evidence that is not a closed deal, and a letter that only reaches for revenue throws most of it away.

Kind of evidenceWhat it looks like in a sentence
An agreementSigned 9 reseller and integrator agreements, negotiating margin tiers and minimum annual volume on each
A segmentOpened cold storage from a market study to first revenue in 14 months; it now carries $6.3 million of annual bookings
Somebody else's judgment68 percent of my sourced opportunities were accepted first time against a written qualification standard
Channel sharePartner-originated revenue moved from $4.2 million to $17.9 million, and from 11 percent of bookings to 29 percent
A live pursuitTwo pursuits past 18 months and still running, both now at contract review
Time to productivityCut the gap from signed agreement to first partner order from 9 months to 4

The fifth row matters more than it looks. In an occupation where the average cycle runs close to a year, a letter that reports only completed work is describing a person who has never been trusted with anything slow.

Channel, segment or outbound: three letters, not one

Do

For a channel role, lead with agreements signed and the commercial terms you negotiated, then partner productivity. For a segment or market entry role, lead with the study, the elapsed time to first revenue and what you had to change about the product or the pricing. For an outbound sourcing role, lead with sourced pipeline, the qualification standard and the acceptance rate the sales team applied. Name one true thing about their channel or market, taken from their own site or a job posting.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not send the same letter to all three; they are different jobs with one title. Do not present closed revenue as yours. Do not name a partner or customer you signed under a confidentiality term. Do not describe yourself as a relationship builder or a hunter. Do not hide a long pursuit, since the length is the evidence.

Statistical insight

There is no published median for the title, so quote the bracket

The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes no Occupational Outlook Handbook profile for business development manager, so the title is counted inside whichever occupation the work belongs to. Sales managers had a median annual wage of $148,270 in May 2025 across 650,100 jobs, with 4 percent projected growth to 2035 and about 47,300 openings a year. Marketing managers, where market and segment development often sits, had a median of $166,790 in the same cycle (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025 wage data and 2025 to 2035 projections).

The channel-facing side is flatter and cheaper: wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives numbered 1,571,400 in 2025 with 0 percent projected change, and a median of $76,460 rising to $104,920 for technical and scientific products (BLS, May 2025).

For a letter, the consequence is worth a sentence of preparation rather than a sentence on the page. You are being priced against an occupation the employer has already chosen, and naming what you opened is what moves you toward the technical, managed, better-paid end of it.

Length, format and sending it

One page, four paragraphs, 250 to 400 words. PDF unless the portal asks otherwise, named for yourself and the post.

Address a named person. Commercial leadership is usually public on a company site or a job posting, and a letter that opens "Dear Hiring Team" while claiming to be good at finding the right person to talk to undercuts itself in the first line.

Use the same figures as your resume so the two agree. Our business development manager resume example is written with the numbers used here.

Key takeaways

  1. Say in the first paragraph which kind of business development you do.
  2. Name one thing you opened: an agreement, a segment, a territory.
  3. Give the elapsed time, because the cycle is the job.
  4. State who closed the revenue in the same sentence as the revenue.
  5. Use the acceptance rate; it is somebody else's judgment of your work.
  6. Name one true thing about their channel or market.
  7. Include a live pursuit with its current stage, not only finished work.

Business development manager cover letter questions, answered

How long should a business development manager cover letter be?

One page, four paragraphs, 250 to 400 words. Commercial hiring managers read these between meetings, and a letter that needs two screens to reach the first concrete fact does not get the second screen.

Should I mention deals that have not closed?

Yes, with the elapsed time and the current stage, described in the buyer's language: at legal review, in procurement, waiting on a board date. In an occupation where cycles run close to a year, live pursuits are a large part of what you actually do, and a letter that shows only completed work reads as either junior or selective.

How do I write this letter when moving from sales into business development?

Reframe around openings rather than closes. The accounts you started rather than inherited, the first deal in a segment, the referral or partner relationship you built, the pipeline you generated with no inbound. Then add a sentence on cycle length, because the doubt about a salesperson moving into business development is patience, not ability.

Can I name the partners or customers I signed?

Describe them, do not name them. "A national mechanical contractor group with 40 branches" carries the scale without touching a confidentiality term, and it reads as someone who understands what they signed. Naming a partner on a job application is the kind of detail that gets repeated back to that partner.

What should the third paragraph say if I do not know their market?

Then research the market for an hour before you write. Read the job posting for what it complains about, look at where their distributor or partner list stops, and check whether they have just launched something that needs a new route to market. One accurate observation about their coverage gaps is worth more than three sentences of admiration, and it is the part of the letter that cannot be reused.
