Summary
An outside sales representative resume is a one to two page document built on a territory: the geography, the number of active accounts, the line card you carry, the route you run every four weeks, and the specification work behind the orders. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the wage split that decides how your file is read, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics data.
Sales Representative resume examples by experience level
An outside sales representative resume is a one to two page document built on a territory. Where it is, how many active accounts sit in it, which manufacturer lines you carry into them, how often you get in front of each one, and what the territory did in dollars while you had it.
A regional manager hiring a field representative is handing over a map, a line card and a truck. They need to know whether you have run a route before, whether the products on your card are near enough to theirs to transfer, and whether your accounts buy on specification or on price and availability.
This page is written for outside field sales of a physical product sold through distribution. The worked example is commercial building envelope: roofing membrane, insulation, air barriers and sealants, sold through distributor branches to contractors and specified with architects.
Resume guide for a sales representative resume
This guide and the corresponding sales representative resume example will cover:
- How to write an outside sales representative resume, block by block
- The territory profile, the line card and the call plan, and why all three belong on page one
- Three adaptable summaries: new territory, established territory and senior territory manager
- The federal wage split between technical and non-technical selling, and which side your file lands on
How to write a sales representative resume
Five blocks: contact header, summary, territory profile, employment history with the territory numbers, then skills, certifications and education. One page for your first territory, two once you have carried more than one. The territory profile is the block most field sales resumes skip, and the first thing a regional manager looks for.
| Block | What it is answering | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Territory profile | What geography, how many accounts, what kind of accounts? | Directly under the summary |
| Line card | Which manufacturers and product categories have you carried? | Its own short block, named by category |
| Call plan | How many face-to-face calls a week, on what cycle? | Inside the territory profile or the first bullet |
| Specification work | Do you get written into drawings, or do you quote what is already written? | Its own bullets, with conversion attached |
Write the territory as geography, account count and account mix
"Managed a sales territory in the Southwest" tells a regional manager nothing, because territory is three separate facts and only one of them is geography.
Write all three: "New Mexico and El Paso County, Texas. 141 active accounts: 94 roofing and envelope contractors, 23 architecture and engineering firms, 17 general contractors, 7 distributor branches." A reader now knows your windshield time, your account density, and whether you sell to buyers, to specifiers or to both.
Account mix is the part that transfers. A representative who calls on architects as well as contractors has a specification motion; one who calls only on branches has a stocking and turns motion, and a hiring manager is screening for one of them.
Put the finished file through the free Rezoom ATS resume checker first. Manufacturers and large distributors both parse applications into a system before a district manager sees them.
Choosing the best resume format for a sales representative resume
Reverse chronological. One page for a first territory, two once you have carried a second one.
Keep the territory attached to the dates. Field sales careers are read as a sequence of territories: how long you held each and what it did while you had it. Two years is when a route starts to pay, so four territories in five years raises a question the interview will be spent on.
If you are coming off a counter or an inside sales desk, keep the timeline and convert the numbers. Counter time is respected in building products, because it is where product knowledge comes from.

Put the product category in the header, not the word sales. Building envelope, electrical distribution, industrial fasteners and process instrumentation are different trades with different customers, and a regional manager screens for product adjacency first. Name the certifications there too; they are rare enough on a resume to be worth the line.
Make use of a summary
Four lines: what you sell and where, the territory in accounts and dollars, the call plan, and the qualification or specification work that puts you on the technical side of the line.

Outside sales representative for a manufacturers' rep agency selling commercial building envelope products through two-step distribution across New Mexico and El Paso County, Texas. Carry a six-line card into 141 active accounts, 94 of them roofing and envelope contractors, on a four-week route cycle of 16 face-to-face calls a week and about 1,150 road miles. Took the territory from $3.6 million to $4.8 million in three years, wrote 38 basis-of-design specifications in the last twelve months with 61 percent converting to purchase, and hold CDT and CCPR certification from the Construction Specifications Institute.
Senior territory manager for a building envelope manufacturers' rep agency covering New Mexico, West Texas and southern Colorado, with an eight-line card, 214 active accounts and $11.2 million in territory revenue. Added two manufacturer lines worth $2.4 million in their first full year, wrote 62 basis-of-design specifications last year with 68 percent converting to purchase, and deliver AIA-registered continuing education to 21 architecture firms. Hold CDT and CCPR from the Construction Specifications Institute and train the agency's two junior representatives on submittals, mock-ups and warranty scope.

Territory Sales Representative, Camino Real Building Products Group, Albuquerque, NM, April 2020 to Present
Carry a six-line card of commercial building envelope products through two-step distribution across New Mexico and El Paso County, Texas: single-ply membrane, polyisocyanurate insulation, air and vapor barriers, sealants and flashing, edge metal, and roof coatings.
Hold 141 active accounts, 94 of them roofing and envelope contractors, on a four-week route cycle of 16 face-to-face calls a week and about 1,150 road miles.
Took the territory from $3.6 million to $4.8 million over three years, and brought the coatings line from a standing start to $610,000 in its second full year.
Wrote 38 basis-of-design specifications in the last twelve months with 61 percent converting to purchase, at a median of 11 months from specification to first order.
Ran 12 on-roof mock-ups, 9 adhesion pull tests and 26 AIA-registered continuing education presentations to 14 architecture firms, and reviewed distributor sales-out by branch monthly.
Which side of the technical and scientific line you sell on
The federal wage data for this occupation is published as two numbers, and the gap between them is the single most useful fact on this page.
Wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives selling technical and scientific products had a median annual wage of $104,920 as of May 2025. Representatives of everything else in the same occupation had a median of $72,080 (BLS, May 2025). The spread is wider at the edges: on the technical side the lowest 10 percent earned less than $52,600 and the highest 10 percent more than $200,440, while on the non-technical side the same percentiles were $39,090 and $137,550 (BLS, May 2025). The Bureau also records that typical entry-level education differs across the same line: a high school diploma for non-technical products, a bachelor's degree for scientific and technical ones (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).
Two people with the identical job title sit on opposite sides of that split, and a hiring manager reads their resumes for different things.
On the non-technical side the reader wants coverage and consistency: how many accounts, how often you reach them, how the territory grew, how you hold gross margin under price pressure, and whether distributors take your calls.
On the technical side the reader wants to know whether you can be trusted in front of an engineer. Can you read a drawing set and a specification section, write a basis-of-design paragraph, run a submittal through review, conduct a field test and answer a code question without phoning the factory. The word that separates the two files is specification: you are either written into the documents before the project bids, or you quote against whatever somebody else wrote.
Building products sit on the line, and the same territory can be sold either way. A representative who moves from quoting bid lists to writing basis-of-design specifications has crossed the wage split without changing jobs.
Territory: New Mexico and El Paso County, Texas. 141 active accounts: 94 roofing and envelope contractors, 23 architecture and engineering firms, 17 general contractors, 7 distributor branches across 3 distributors.
Line card: single-ply membrane, polyisocyanurate insulation, air and vapor barriers, sealants and flashing, edge metal, roof coatings. Six manufacturer lines, none competing.
Call plan: four-week route cycle, 16 face-to-face calls a week, about 1,150 road miles. A accounts every two weeks, B monthly, C quarterly. Counter days at 7 distributor branches each quarter.
Specification: 38 basis-of-design specifications written in twelve months, 61 percent converting to purchase, median 11 months from specification to first order.
Field work: 12 on-roof mock-ups, 9 adhesion pull tests, 4 contractor training sessions, 26 AIA-registered continuing education presentations to 14 firms.
Five things make that block credible.
Name the lines by product category, not by manufacturer alone. Six lines means nothing until a reader knows whether any of them compete with the card they would hand you, and non-competing is the whole logic of a rep agency.
Give the call plan as a cycle, not a total. "Sixteen calls a week on a four-week cycle" says the route is designed. "Over 800 sales calls annually" says you can multiply.
Separate the people who buy from the people who specify. Branches, contractors, architects and general contractors are four different conversations, and a territory holding all four is the harder and better-paid job.
Report specification conversion with the lag attached. A specification written today is an order eleven months from now, so a representative who reports only current-year revenue undersells their own pipeline.
Say what you do in the field. Mock-ups, pull tests, moisture surveys, on-site trials and warranty inspections are what make a technical product rep worth the margin, and they are almost never on the resume.
The occupation is flat and the pay gap is about the product, not the title
Wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives held 1,571,400 jobs in 2025, with no projected change through 2035, a fall of 7,700 positions, and about 123,400 openings a year (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections). The median annual wage across the whole occupation was $76,460 as of May 2025 (BLS, May 2025).
The industry medians show the same split from a different angle. Among representatives of technical and scientific products, wholesale trade agents and brokers had a median of $118,990, while agents and brokers selling everything else had a median of $76,750 (BLS, May 2025). That is the same employer type, the same job title and the same kind of commission agreement, separated by $42,240 of product complexity.
Nothing on a resume closes that gap faster than evidence of specification work and field technical service.
Build a snapshot of your key sales representative skills
Twelve to fourteen entries in four groups, weighted toward territory mechanics and product technical work.
Territory: Route planning and call cycle design, Account segmentation and A through C ranking, Territory revenue and growth analysis, Windshield time and coverage discipline, CRM discipline in Salesforce and Repfabric
Channel: Two-step distribution management, Distributor sales-out analysis by branch, Counter days and branch training, Stocking and turns negotiation, Quotation and bid-day management
Technical and specification: Basis-of-design specification writing, CSI MasterFormat sections and submittal review, Mock-ups, adhesion pull testing and field trials, Warranty scope and system approvals, AIA-registered continuing education delivery
Commercial: Gross margin management, Project quotation and price protection, Sample and literature logistics, Forecasting by project and by branch
Name the systems by product. A representative who already keeps a route in the agency's system is productive a month earlier.
List your education and certifications
Certifications first in a specification-driven category, then the degree. This is the block that moves a file across the technical line.
Certified Construction Product Representative (CCPR), Construction Specifications Institute, 2023
Construction Documents Technology (CDT), Construction Specifications Institute, 2019
OSHA 30-Hour Construction Outreach Training, OSHA Outreach Training Program, 2024
Bachelor of Science, Construction Management, New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, NM, 2013
Manufacturer certifications: single-ply membrane installer training and low-slope system design schools for four carried lines, 2020 to 2025.
The two CSI certificates are worth understanding before you list them. The Construction Documents Technology certificate is issued by the Construction Specifications Institute, requires a high school diploma or equivalent, and is aimed at the whole project team including manufacturers' representatives, with two years of construction experience or college coursework recommended (Construction Specifications Institute, CDT certification, checked 12 September 2026). The Certified Construction Product Representative is the credential built for this job, and CSI requires candidates to pass both the CDT and the CCPR examinations to hold it (Construction Specifications Institute, CCPR certification, checked 12 September 2026).
Continuing education delivery is the other line worth naming. Manufacturers register as providers in the American Institute of Architects Continuing Education System and their representatives deliver approved courses, including health, safety and welfare content, to architects who need the hours for license renewal; AIA members earn 1.35 million hours of continuing education a year through AIA-approved providers (American Institute of Architects, continuing education for providers, checked 12 September 2026). Presenting those sessions puts you in front of specifiers for an hour at a time.
Choose the right layout and design
Single column, 10 or 11 point, real table markup for the territory profile, no photograph, no logos.
Give the geography, the account count and the account mix. List the line card by product category and say whether the lines compete. Write the call plan as a cycle with a weekly call count. Report territory revenue at the start and the end of your tenure. Put specification conversion and its lag on the page. Name your field work: mock-ups, pull tests, trials. List CDT, CCPR and manufacturer training near the top.
Do not write "managed a territory in the Southwest" when the state list is a fact you know. Do not report annual call totals instead of a cycle. Do not claim a specification you did not write. Do not name the contractors and architects you call on; name the account types. Do not hide counter or inside sales time, since product knowledge is why it counts.
Sales representative job market and outlook
Outside sales representatives are counted in the Bureau of Labor Statistics occupation for wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives.
| Measure | Value |
|---|---|
| Wholesale and manufacturing sales representative jobs, 2025 | 1,571,400 |
| Projected change, 2025-35 | 0% (little or no change), -7,700 |
| Projected annual openings | About 123,400 |
| Median annual wage, except technical and scientific, May 2025 | $72,080 |
| Median annual wage, technical and scientific products, May 2025 | $104,920 |
| Typical entry-level education | High school diploma for non-technical products, bachelor's degree for technical products |
Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections and May 2025 wage data.
About 123,400 openings a year against a ten-year decline of 7,700 positions means the market is almost entirely replacement hiring: retirements, territory reshuffles, and agencies picking up or losing lines. The resume that gets the call is the one a regional manager can map onto their own account list in thirty seconds.
What salary you can expect as a sales representative
Across the whole occupation the median annual wage was $76,460 as of May 2025, sitting between the two sides of the split: $104,920 for technical and scientific products and $72,080 for everything else (BLS, May 2025).
Industry matters as much as side. For representatives of technical and scientific products, May 2025 medians ran $133,690 in merchant wholesalers of nondurable goods, $118,990 for wholesale trade agents and brokers, $108,100 in professional, scientific and technical services, $106,650 in manufacturing and $99,920 for equipment wholesalers. On the non-technical side the same cycle shows $77,280 in manufacturing, $76,750 for wholesale trade agents and brokers, $67,780 in merchant wholesalers of durable goods, $66,940 in nondurable goods and $58,120 in retail trade (BLS, May 2025).
Read those lists side by side and the shape of a field sales career is obvious. Moving from a non-technical line card to a technical one is worth more than moving employer: agents and brokers carrying technical lines show a median of $118,990 against $76,750 for the same agency model on simpler products, and the difference is specification work and field service.
Most field pay is a base plus commission on territory revenue, and agency pay is often commission on the lines you carry, which is why territory dollars and line performance belong on the page.

Sales representative resume questions, answered
How long should a sales representative resume be?
One page for a first territory, two once you have carried a second one or grown a line card. The second page is the territory profile and the older roles, nothing else.
What do I put on a sales representative resume with no outside sales experience?
Counter, inside sales or customer service time in the same product category, with its numbers: orders written a day, lines quoted, gross margin held, and any branch training you delivered. Building products and industrial distribution both promote off the counter routinely. Add the CDT or the equivalent category certificate; it costs a study cycle and it moves your file.
How do I show results when a project takes a year to land?
Report the specification pipeline separately from the revenue. Specifications written, the share that converted, and the median months between the two turn a twelve-month lag into evidence rather than a gap. Then show territory revenue over three years, since one year of a specification-driven territory tells nobody anything.
Should I list the manufacturers on my line card?
List the product categories always, and the manufacturer names where your agreement allows it. A regional manager is checking for adjacency and for conflict, and categories answer the first question without creating a problem with the second.
Is the CCPR certification worth holding?
In a specification-driven category, yes. CSI requires candidates to pass both the CDT and the CCPR examinations to hold it (Construction Specifications Institute, CCPR certification, checked 12 September 2026), and it is uncommon enough to read as a signal that you work the technical side of the sale rather than the price side.
