Summary
An account executive resume is a one to two page document that publishes the arithmetic behind a number: quota carried, attainment by year, average contract value, win rate, cycle length and pipeline coverage. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the quota card that separates a real number from a claimed one, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook data for the occupation.
Account Executive resume examples by experience level
An account executive resume is a one to two page document that publishes the arithmetic behind a number. Quota carried, percentage of it closed, average contract value, win rate, cycle length. Those five figures decide whether the rest of the page gets read.
A sales leader has read hundreds of files that say "consistently exceeded quota" and has learned that the phrase survives every kind of year. A rep who carried $400,000 and closed $460,000 writes it, and so does a rep who carried $2.4 million and closed $1.9 million. It hides the one thing a hiring manager needs, which is the size of the number you are used to carrying.
This page is written for new business quota carriers in business software: the account executive who owns a segment, a territory or a named list and is measured on logos signed. If you own accounts after the sale, the work and the metrics are different and our account manager resume example covers them.
Resume guide for an account executive resume
This guide and the corresponding account executive resume example will cover:
- How to write an account executive resume, block by block
- The quota card, and the eight lines a sales leader reads first
- Three adaptable summaries: small business, mid-market and strategic
- Why self-sourced pipeline is worth more on the page than total pipeline
- What the job market looks like and what the occupation pays
How to write an account executive resume
Five blocks: contact header, summary, the quota card, employment history, then skills, tools and education. One page for your first three years, two once you have three full quota years to show.
The quota card is the block most account executive resumes leave out, and the one a sales leader reads before the bullets: a small table with one row per fiscal year and one column per metric.
| Block | What it is answering | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Segment line | What size of company and what size of deal is this person trained on? | Contact header, under your name |
| Quota card | What did they carry, what did they close, and on what deal shape? | Directly under the summary |
| Employment history | How did the number happen, and what did they build to get it? | Reverse chronological, three to five bullets |
| Tools | Which stack do they already run without training? | Named by product, near the skills |
Write the quota next to the attainment, every single time
Attainment on its own is a ratio with the interesting half removed. "Finished at 118 percent" could be a $300,000 quota or a $3 million one, and those are different jobs with different interview loops.
Write both: "Carried $1,150,000, closed $1,288,000, 112 percent." Now a reader knows the segment you belong in, the deal size you have handled, and whether your last number is a step up or a step sideways from the one they are hiring for.
Do the same with a year you missed. "FY2024: $1,100,000 carried, $1,067,000 closed, 97 percent" is a stronger line than silence, because a sales leader assumes any year you skipped was a bad one and assumes worse than the truth.
Run the finished file through the free Rezoom ATS resume checker before you send it. Software companies run applications through a tracking system before a recruiter opens them, and a two-column layout is where the quota card usually disappears.
Choosing the best resume format for an account executive resume
Reverse chronological, with the quota card as real table markup rather than prose. Sales leaders read a quota card the way they read a forecast, by column, and sentences destroy that.
One page until you have three full quota years behind you, two after that. Functional formats fail here, because the question under every sales interview is how recently and how consistently you have carried a number, and a format that hides the timeline reads as a timeline with a gap in it.

Put the segment in the header. Small business, mid-market, enterprise and strategic are four different jobs sharing one title, and they differ in deal size, cycle length and how many people sign. A reader who has to guess assumes the smallest. The three-number line under it gets quota, attainment and deal size in front of a recruiter who may only read the top third of the page.
Make use of a summary
Four lines: segment and product, quota and attainment, deal shape, and one process fact such as self-sourced share or qualification framework.
Account executive covering the small business segment for a Denver software vendor, carrying a $620,000 annual quota and closing $644,000, or 104 percent, in the last full year. Closed 35 new logos at an average contract value of $18,400, a 24 percent win rate on 146 qualified opportunities, and a 34 day median cycle from discovery call to signature. Self-source 35 percent of closed business through outbound calling and hold a current Salesforce administrator credential.
Mid-market account executive with five years of new business software sales, carrying a $1,150,000 quota and finishing the last year at 112 percent, after 97 percent and 118 percent in the two years before it. Closed 21 new logos at an average contract value of $61,300, a 27 percent win rate on 78 qualified opportunities, and a 74 day median cycle. Qualify every forecast deal against MEDDPICC, multi-thread an average of 4.2 stakeholders per closed deal, and self-source 41 percent of closed revenue.
Strategic account executive with ten years of new business software sales, carrying a $2,400,000 quota and closing $3,045,000, or 127 percent, across 21 new logos at an average contract value of $145,000. Hold a 31 percent win rate on 68 qualified opportunities at a 129 day median cycle, with 3.1 times pipeline coverage in place at the start of each quarter and 58 percent of closed revenue self-sourced. Run the weekly deal review for a team of six and mentor three account executives on multi-threading.
Right vs wrong: the same account executive summary, twice
| ✅ Right | ❌ Wrong |
|---|---|
| Carried a $1,150,000 quota and finished the last year at 112 percent. | Consistently exceeded quota and performance targets. |
| Closed 21 new logos at an average contract value of $61,300. | Closed numerous high-value deals with key accounts. |
| 27 percent win rate on 78 qualified opportunities at a 74 day median cycle. | Proven ability to move deals through the pipeline quickly. |
| Self-source 41 percent of closed revenue through outbound. | Skilled at prospecting and building relationships. |
The right column can be checked against a customer relationship management export in four minutes, and in a final-stage interview it usually is. The left column cannot be checked at all, which is exactly why a sales leader discounts it.
Outline your account executive experience
Company, what it sells, who it sells to, your segment and the dates. Then three to five bullets, each carrying a number that belongs to you rather than to the company.

| Built strong relationships with decision makers | Multi-threaded an average of 4.2 stakeholders per closed deal, including the economic buyer on 19 of 21 |
| Sourced new business through outbound efforts | Self-sourced 41 percent of closed revenue, 9 of 21 logos, from a 60 account named list |
| Shortened the sales cycle | Cut median cycle from 96 days to 74 by moving security review into the pilot rather than after it |

Mid-Market Account Executive, Cairnstone Data Platform, Denver, CO, March 2021 to Present
Own new business for a 60 account named list of 200 to 2,000 employee manufacturers and distributors across the Mountain West, selling a data integration platform priced between $28,000 and $210,000 a year.
Carried $1,150,000 in FY2025 and closed $1,288,000, 112 percent, after 97 percent on $1,100,000 in FY2024 and 118 percent on $940,000 in FY2023.
Closed 21 new logos at an average contract value of $61,300, a 27 percent win rate on 78 qualified opportunities, at a 74 day median cycle from first meeting to signature.
Self-sourced 41 percent of closed revenue, including the two largest deals of the year, working the named list directly rather than waiting on marketing-qualified leads.
Cut median cycle from 96 days to 74 by running the security review in parallel with the pilot, and multi-threaded an average of 4.2 stakeholders per closed deal.
Publish the pipeline math behind your number
Every account executive resume claims a number. A quota card is what turns the claim into arithmetic a sales leader can check, and it takes eight lines.
| Fiscal year | Segment | Quota | Closed | Attainment | New logos | Average contract value | Win rate | Median cycle | |---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---| | FY2025 | Mid-market | $1,150,000 | $1,288,000 | 112% | 21 | $61,300 | 27% (21 of 78) | 74 days | | FY2024 | Mid-market | $1,100,000 | $1,067,000 | 97% | 18 | $59,300 | 24% (18 of 75) | 96 days | | FY2023 | Small business | $940,000 | $1,109,000 | 118% | 34 | $32,600 | 29% (34 of 117) | 51 days |
Pipeline coverage held at start of quarter: 3.4x. Self-sourced share of closed revenue: 41%. Average stakeholders multi-threaded per closed deal: 4.2. Qualification: MEDDPICC on every forecast deal.
Eight things make that card credible, and each of them is a question a VP of Sales will ask anyway.
Quota and attainment, by year, for three years. One good year is a market. Three years is a rep. Show the miss as well as the beats, with the quota beside each, because the shape of the three years is what a sales leader is actually reading.
Average contract value and average selling price, and the difference between them. Average contract value is the annualised value; average selling price is what was booked on the paper, which on a three-year deal is much larger. Say which one you are quoting, because reporting total contract value as annual recurring revenue reads as careless or hopeful.
Win rate, with its denominator written out. "27 percent" means nothing until you say 21 of 78, and it means something different again depending on where you start counting. Count from qualified opportunities, not from every lead that ever landed in your name, and say so. A high win rate on a tiny denominator is a rep who only works deals that were already won.
Sales cycle in days, measured from a stated point. First meeting to signature and qualified opportunity to signature are both defensible; leaving the starting line unstated is not, because the same deal is 74 days or 130 depending on where you put it. Use the median, since one nine-month monster distorts an average and every territory has one.
Pipeline coverage, as a multiple of quota at the start of the period. If your organization expected three times and you carried 3.4, write both. Coverage is the only forward-looking number on the card, and it is the one that says whether your last good year was built or lucky.
The self-sourced split, as a share of closed revenue rather than of opportunities. This is the highest-value line on the card. A rep who self-sourced 41 percent can be dropped into a territory with no marketing support and still build a number; a rep who closed the same total entirely from inbound has proved something about closing and nothing about pipeline generation.
Stakeholders multi-threaded per closed deal. Single-threaded deals are how forecast slips happen, and every sales leader has been burned by one. Reporting an average of four or more, and naming whether you reached the economic buyer, says you sell the way their forecast wants you to.
The qualification framework, named, plus what you actually do with it. MEDDPICC, Command of the Message, SPIN and the Challenger model all appear on resumes as decoration. Make it concrete: "Qualify every forecast deal against MEDDPICC; no deal enters commit without a named economic buyer and a documented decision process."
A flat occupation where the deal size, not the title, sets the pay
Wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives, the occupation that carries most business to business quota-carrying roles in federal data, held 1,571,400 jobs in 2025, with no projected change through 2035, a decline of 7,700 positions, and about 123,400 openings a year (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections). Inside that flat headline the pay splits in two: representatives selling technical and scientific products had a median annual wage of $104,920 as of May 2025, against $72,080 for everyone else in the occupation (BLS, May 2025).
That $32,840 gap is not a seniority gap. It is a product complexity gap, and it is the strongest argument on this page for writing the deal shape down. A resume that shows $61,300 contract values, four stakeholders and a 74 day cycle has located itself on the higher side of that split without claiming a title. A resume that says "exceeded targets" has located itself nowhere.
Build a snapshot of your key account executive skills
Twelve to fourteen entries in four groups, weighted toward pipeline generation and deal mechanics rather than adjectives.
Pipeline generation: Outbound prospecting to a named list, Account research and mapping, Cold calling and sequencing, Referral and champion sourcing, Territory planning
Deal execution: MEDDPICC qualification, Multi-threading to the economic buyer, Discovery and business case development, Mutual action plans, Pricing and commercial negotiation, Security and procurement review management
Forecasting: Pipeline coverage management, Stage hygiene and close date discipline, Commit and upside forecasting, Win and loss review
Tools: Salesforce, HubSpot, Outreach, Gong, ZoomInfo, LinkedIn Sales Navigator, Clari
Name the tools by product. A sales operations leader reads that line as a training cost.
List your education and certifications
Degree, then the sales methodology training with its provider, then the platform credentials. Account executive hiring is not credential-gated, so this block is short and it goes at the bottom.
Bachelor of Arts, Economics, University of Colorado Boulder, Boulder, CO, 2016
Command of the Message and MEDDICC qualification training, Force Management, 2022
Salesforce Certified Administrator, Salesforce, credential ID SF-2211840, 2021
Continuing training: Gong conversation intelligence certification, 2024. Negotiation program, 2023.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics records that entry-level education in this occupation varies by what is being sold: a high school diploma is typical for non-technical products, and a bachelor's degree is typical for scientific and technical products (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025). Software sits on the technical side of that line in practice, which is why a degree usually appears in the job posting even though almost nobody is hired on it.
Choose the right layout and design
Single column, 10 or 11 point, real table markup for the quota card, no photograph, no skill bars. Export to PDF and name the file for yourself and the role.
Put quota and attainment side by side for three years. State your segment in the header. Give average contract value and say whether it is annual or total. Write the win rate with its denominator. Say where you start counting the sales cycle. Report the self-sourced share of closed revenue. Name the qualification framework and what it gates.
Do not write "consistently exceeded quota" without the quota. Do not hide the year you missed; the gap is louder than the number. Do not quote total contract value as though it were annual recurring revenue. Do not claim President's Club without the year and the cohort size. Do not list every logo you ever sold to as though you owned the account. Do not describe a team number as yours.
Account executive job market and outlook
Account executives are counted inside the Bureau of Labor Statistics occupation for wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives, which covers business to business selling across software, equipment and supplies.
| Measure | Value |
|---|---|
| Wholesale and manufacturing sales representative jobs, 2025 | 1,571,400 |
| Projected change, 2025-35 | 0% (little or no change), -7,700 |
| Projected annual openings | About 123,400 |
| Median annual wage, technical and scientific products, May 2025 | $104,920 |
| Median annual wage, except technical and scientific, May 2025 | $72,080 |
Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections and May 2025 wage data.
The headline is flat and the openings number is not. About 123,400 openings a year against an occupation shrinking by 7,700 positions over a decade means almost every opening is a replacement driven by turnover, so hiring is close to continuous and your file will be read fast and in volume. That is the case for putting the quota card in the top third of page one.
What salary you can expect as an account executive
Representatives selling technical and scientific products had a median annual wage of $104,920 as of May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent under $52,600 and the highest 10 percent over $200,440 (BLS, May 2025). Across the whole occupation, including non-technical products, the median was $76,460 (BLS, May 2025).
Those figures are total earnings, which is the right way to read them, because an account executive package is a base salary plus commission on a split that is usually somewhere near even at target. Quota, not title, sets the ceiling: a rep carrying $1.15 million at a 10 percent commission rate has a different maximum than a rep carrying $400,000, whatever either business card says.
Industry medians sharpen it further. Among representatives of technical and scientific products, merchant wholesalers of nondurable goods paid a median of $133,690, wholesale trade agents and brokers $118,990, professional, scientific and technical services $108,100, manufacturing $106,650 and equipment wholesalers $99,920 as of May 2025 (BLS, May 2025). Software vendors sit inside professional, scientific and technical services in that classification.
This is why the quota card pays for itself at offer time. The only evidence for putting you at the top of a band rather than the middle is your own documented deal size and attainment history.
Key takeaways for an account executive resume
- Write the quota beside the attainment for three years, including the year you missed.
- Put the segment in the header, because segment sets deal size and cycle length.
- Build a quota card as a table, and put it directly under the summary.
- Give the win rate with its denominator and say where you start counting the cycle.
- Report the self-sourced share of closed revenue; it is the line that proves you can build pipeline.
- Name the stakeholders you multi-thread and the qualification framework you gate on.
- Keep it single column and parseable, since the tracking system reads it before a recruiter does.

Account executive resume questions, answered
How long should an account executive resume be?
One page until you have three full quota years, two after that. The second page should be the quota card, the older roles and the tools, in that order. Sales files are read in batches, and a third page reads as someone who could not decide what their best number was.
What if I missed quota last year?
Write it down with the quota beside it. Every territory has a bad year, and a sales leader who sees FY2023 and FY2025 with FY2024 missing assumes the missing year was worse than it was. Then add the context in one clause: a territory change, a product sunset, a segment move. Context is credible when the number is already on the page and hollow when it is not.
Should I name the companies I sold to?
Name the segment and the industry, not the customer, unless the deal is already public in a case study you can point to. "200 to 2,000 employee manufacturers and distributors" tells a hiring manager what they need. A list of logos invites the question of who actually owned each account, and that question has cost candidates offers.
How do I show results when I inherited a territory?
Split what you were given from what you built. State the opening pipeline and book you inherited, then the self-sourced share of what you closed. A rep who inherited $600,000 of pipeline and self-sourced 41 percent of closed revenue has made a specific, checkable claim about their own contribution.
What do I put on an account executive resume with no closing experience yet?
The first two columns of the same funnel. Meetings booked and accepted, opportunities created and their dollar value, conversion from meeting to qualified opportunity, activity volume, and the sourced pipeline that closed after you handed it on. "Sourced 118 qualified opportunities worth $3.4 million, of which $960,000 closed" is a real number and it does not claim the close.
