Summary

A car sales resume is a one page document written in the language of the pay plan: units delivered split new and used, front and back gross per unit, closing ratio against logged opportunities, lead source mix and your manufacturer customer satisfaction index. This guide gives you three adaptable versions and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook data.

Car Sales resume examples by experience level

A car sales resume is a one page document written in the only language a general sales manager reads fluently: the pay plan.

Units delivered, gross per unit, closing ratio, lead source and CSI. Those five decide what you earn, what the store earns and whether you keep your desk. They are also the five that almost nobody puts on a car sales resume, which is why most of them read the same: built strong relationships, exceeded targets, provided excellent service. A manager holding twelve of those cannot choose between them.

This page covers retail vehicle sales on a franchise floor. If you sell into dealerships rather than to the public, our sales representative resume example is written for that.

Resume guide for a car sales resume

This guide and the corresponding car sales resume example will cover:

  • How to write a car sales resume, section by section
  • The pay plan numbers a general sales manager checks, and where yours live
  • Three adaptable summaries: first year, experienced consultant and internet sales lead
  • Licensing, the finance office boundary and the compliance work behind a delivery

How to write a car sales resume

Six blocks: contact header, summary, the production numbers, store experience, skills, then education and licensing. One page. A car sales resume that runs to two is usually padding out the part that should have been a table.

The production block goes high, directly under the summary, because it is the part a manager can verify. Every figure in it exists in the dealer management system, and a manager who wants to check will call your last store manager.

BlockWhat it is answeringWhere it goes
Production numbersHow many units a month, at what gross?Directly under the summary
Closing ratio and lead sourceDo they sell what they get, and where do their deals come from?Inside the production block
CSI and survey returnWill this person cost us manufacturer money?Inside the production block
LicensingCan this person legally be on the floor on Monday?Education and licensing, with the state and number
Expert Tip

Pull your own reports before your last day on the floor

Everything a hiring manager wants is already in the dealer management system, and almost nobody takes it with them. Ask for your production recap by month for the last 12 months, your closing ratio against logged opportunities, your lead source report, your finance product penetration and your CSI standing against the regional benchmark.

Take the store or floor average with every number. "Closed 24 percent of logged opportunities against a store average of 18 percent" is worth five bullets of relationship language, because that comparison is how a manager reads a production board. If your store logs opportunities loosely, say so and use what it does track.

Run the finished file through the free Rezoom ATS resume checker before you send it. Dealer groups increasingly recruit through a system that parses it before a manager opens it.

Choosing the best resume format for a car sales resume

Reverse chronological, one page, with a production table high on the page. Dealership hiring runs on recent production, and a functional layout hides the thing being bought.

Movement between stores is normal and does not need hiding, but it does need shape. Give each store, whether it sold new, used or both, your dates and your monthly average there. Short stays with rising units read as someone getting better; short stays with no numbers read as someone getting moved along.

Put one production figure in the header. A manager scanning applications between deliveries is looking for a number, and a header that supplies one buys the rest of the page.

Make use of a summary

Four lines: what you sell and where, units a month with the new and used split, gross per unit, and closing ratio and CSI against their benchmarks.

First year car sales adaptable resume summary example

Sales consultant in a franchise new and used dealership, 14 months on the floor after two years in the business development center. Delivered 11.4 units a month across new and used at $1,940 combined front and back gross per unit, closing 19 percent of logged opportunities against a floor average of 16 percent. Set 42 appointments a month from internet and phone leads at a 63 percent show rate, and finished the last four quarters above the manufacturer customer satisfaction index benchmark with a 71 percent survey return.

Experienced car sales adaptable resume summary example

Sales consultant with seven years at a franchise store selling new and used, averaging 17.2 units a month split 9 new and 8.2 used at $2,410 combined front and back gross per unit and $41,400 total gross a month. Close 24 percent of logged opportunities against a store average of 18 percent, with 46 percent of deliveries coming from repeat and referral business built on a 900-name customer file. Hold a rolling 12-month manufacturer customer satisfaction index of 94.1 against a regional benchmark of 91.0, and hand every deal to the finance office with the compliance paperwork complete.

Internet sales lead adaptable resume summary example

Senior sales consultant and internet sales lead with 12 years at franchise new and used stores, personally delivering 21.6 units a month at $2,680 combined front and back gross per unit while running the internet desk for a team of 7. Rebuilt the lead response routine so first response moved from 47 minutes to under 9, which took appointment show rate from 51 percent to 68 percent and store internet closing ratio from 9 percent to 14 percent over 18 months. Carry a rolling manufacturer customer satisfaction index of 95.3 against a regional benchmark of 91.0, and acquire roughly 6 trades a month for the used inventory.

Adaptable resume employment history example

Senior Sales Consultant and Internet Sales Lead, Cliffside Auto Group, Kansas City, MO, franchise new and used, April 2021 to Present

Deliver 21.6 units a month personally at $2,680 combined front and back gross per unit, while running the internet desk and the lead response routine for a team of 7 consultants.

Rebuilt first response on internet leads from 47 minutes to under 9 by moving the queue into shift-based ownership; appointment show rate went from 51 percent to 68 percent and internet closing ratio from 9 percent to 14 percent over 18 months.

Hold a rolling 12-month manufacturer customer satisfaction index of 95.3 against a regional benchmark of 91.0, with survey return at 74 percent across the internet team.

Acquire around 6 trades a month, 71 percent of which retail on the lot, and work the ageing report weekly to keep days supply near 45, while training every new consultant on the lead process and the handover to the finance office.

The pay plan is the job: units, gross and CSI

A general sales manager reads your resume to predict what your line on the production board will look like in 90 days. The pay plan is how that prediction is made, so write in its terms.

Adaptable resume production numbers example

| Measure | Mine | Store average | Period | |---|---|---|---| | Units delivered a month | 21.6 | 12.8 | Last 12 months | | Front-end gross per unit | $1,540 | $1,180 | Last 12 months | | Back-end gross per unit | $1,140 | $970 | Last 12 months | | Total gross generated | $57,900 a month | $26,200 a month | Last 12 months | | Closing ratio, logged opportunities | 26% | 18% | Last 12 months | | Appointment set and show | 58 set, 68% shown | 31 set, 54% shown | Monthly average | | Repeat and referral share of deliveries | 44% | 21% | Last 12 months | | Manufacturer CSI, rolling 12 month | 95.3 | 91.0 regional benchmark | Last 12 months |

Units delivered, split new and used. One monthly average over a stated period, with the split, because the two halves of the store are different jobs: new is a price-transparent sale on thin front-end gross, used is an inventory sale where you may also be sourcing the car.

Front-end, back-end and total gross. Front-end gross is what the vehicle made; back-end gross is what the finance and insurance office made after you handed the deal over. Give both per unit, then the total gross you generated in a month, because that is what a manager budgets against. A consultant at 12 units and $2,800 a unit beats one at 16 units and $1,700, and only the third number shows it.

Closing ratio, with its denominator. Closing ratio against ups is not the same number as closing ratio against logged opportunities in the customer relationship management system, and the gap is often twice the figure. Say which you are quoting; a manager who has to ask assumes you picked the flattering one.

Lead source mix. Break deliveries into walk-in, internet, phone, and repeat and referral. A consultant whose business is 45 percent repeat and referral has a book and will bring it. One living on floor ups has skill but no book and needs the store's traffic to reproduce the number. Both are hireable, on different money.

Appointments set and shown. Setting appointments is one skill and getting them through the door is another, and the show rate is where internet departments are won or lost. Give both, plus your first response time.

Finance and insurance penetration, and the boundary. Say what share of your deliveries financed through the store and what the product penetration was, then be precise about the line: you structure the deal and hand it over, and the finance office presents the products, discloses the terms and completes the contract. Claiming you sold the service contract yourself reads as inflation. That boundary is a compliance boundary too. A dealership that arranges financing or leases for longer than 90 days is a financial institution under the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, so it must run a written information security program with a designated qualified individual, a written risk assessment and security awareness training for all staff (Federal Trade Commission, automobile dealers and the Safeguards Rule guidance, updated July 2025). Every consultant sits inside that requirement.

Trade acquisition, days supply and ageing. Used inventory is the profit center most stores are fighting over. If you appraise, acquire trades or work the ageing report, give the numbers: trades a month, the share retailed rather than wholesaled, and the aged units you helped move.

Manufacturer CSI and survey compliance. CSI drives manufacturer money, dealer standing and often a slice of your pay plan. Give your rolling 12-month score against the regional benchmark with your survey return rate beside it, because a strong score on a thin return is a weak result. Never describe influencing what a customer writes; manufacturers audit that.

The license, where your state issues one. California requires a vehicle salesperson license for anyone who sells vehicles or vehicle contracts, or supervises those sales, for a dealer, applied for on form OL 16 S with fingerprinting and a background check and valid three years from issuance (California Department of Motor Vehicles, vehicle salesperson license guidance and the OL 303 handbook). Nevada requires an occupational license of anyone employed by a licensed dealer who sells vehicles for compensation, expiring 31 December each year (Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, packet OBL337, revised November 2024). Other states license only the dealership, so check your own state motor vehicle department or dealer board.

Statistical insight

The published median is the whole retail family, not a dealership floor

Retail sales workers held 4,271,400 jobs in 2025, with no projected change through 2035, a decrease of 5,700 jobs, and about 550,600 openings a year, at a median annual wage of $35,560 or $17.10 an hour as of May 2025. Retail salespersons specifically had a median of $17.03 an hour, with the lowest 10 percent under $13.08 and the highest 10 percent over $23.02 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections and May 2025 wage data).

That is the median for the entire retail sales family, most of which is hourly floor work in general merchandise and clothing. The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes no separate motor vehicle dealer median for retail salespersons, so there is no official car salesperson wage to cite, and the automobile dealer figure in the Handbook belongs to parts salespersons, a different occupation. Your own production record is the only credible evidence of your earning power.

Build a snapshot of your key skills

Twelve to fourteen entries in four groups. Keep personality words out; the production table is doing that job.

Adaptable resume skills example

Selling: Needs and budget discovery, Product walkaround and demonstration drive, Trade walk and appraisal presentation, Objection handling and closing

Lead work: Internet and phone lead response, Appointment setting and confirmation, Unsold follow-up cadence, Repeat and referral prospecting, Service drive prospecting

Inventory and desk: Trade acquisition, Used vehicle appraisal input, Ageing and days supply management, Deal structuring and handover to the finance office

Systems and compliance: Dealer management system and desking tools, Customer relationship management and lead routing, Manufacturer CSI reporting, Safeguards Rule security awareness training

List your education, licensing and certifications

Education is short here. What matters is the license, the manufacturer product certification, and anything showing you take compliance seriously.

Adaptable resume education and licensing example

State vehicle salesperson license, where your state issues one: number, issuing authority and expiry on one line.

Associate of Applied Science, Business Administration, Metropolitan Community College, Kansas City, MO, 2013

Manufacturer product and brand certification, franchise new-vehicle training program, completed annually 2019 to 2026

Safeguards Rule security awareness training, dealership information security program, 2026

Valid driver license, clean record, insurable under the dealership policy

That last line is not trivial. Demonstration drives are the job, and a consultant who cannot be added to the store's insurance cannot do them.

Choose the right layout and design

One page, single column, 10 or 11 point, no photograph, no graphics, no rating bars. Put the production table near the top, keep it to plain rows, and hold a plain-list version in case a portal strips the table. Save as a PDF and make sure every number is one you can produce a report for.

Do

Give units a month over a stated period, with the new and used split. Give front-end, back-end and total gross. State the denominator behind your closing ratio. Break deliveries down by lead source. Give CSI against the regional benchmark with the survey return rate beside it. Name the store average next to your own number. Put the license number and expiry on the page where your state issues one.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not write "exceeded targets" without the target. Do not claim the finance office's product income as your own sale. Do not quote a closing ratio against ups and let a manager assume it was against logged opportunities. Do not describe coaching customers on survey answers, because manufacturers audit that. Do not reproduce a previous employer's confidential store figures. Do not run to two pages.

Car sales job market and outlook

Car sales sits inside the retail sales workers group at the Bureau of Labor Statistics, one of the largest and flattest groups in the country.

No motor vehicle dealer median is published for retail salespersons, and the automobile dealer median of $22.08 an hour in the Handbook is for parts salespersons, a separate occupation with 22 percent of its employment in automobile dealers (BLS, May 2025). Do not quote it as a car sales wage.

Half a million openings a year in a group that is not growing means churn rather than expansion, and dealership floors are where it runs fastest. Two years in one store with units moving from 9 to 17 a month beats six years across five stores with no numbers.

What salary you can expect in car sales

There is no published car salesperson median, and saying so is better than guessing. Retail sales workers had a median annual wage of $35,560 as of May 2025, or $17.10 an hour, and retail salespersons a median of $17.03 an hour with the lowest 10 percent under $13.08 and the highest 10 percent over $23.02 (BLS, May 2025). That covers the whole retail family and is not a dealership figure.

Income on a dealership floor is set by the pay plan. Most franchise plans combine a draw or hourly base against commission, a percentage of front-end gross, a share of back-end gross, a volume bonus with steps at set unit counts, spiffs on aged inventory, and a CSI component that can gate the bonus entirely.

Read every line before you accept. Ask what counts as a unit, whether the volume bonus is retroactive or paid only above the step, how pack is calculated before your commission, and what CSI score gates the bonus. Your resume argues for the top of that plan in one way: total gross generated, and a CSI score that will not cost the store money.

Key takeaways for a car sales resume

  1. Write the resume in the pay plan's terms: units, gross, closing ratio, lead source and CSI.
  2. Give units a month over a stated period, split new and used.
  3. Give front-end, back-end and total gross; total gross is what a manager budgets against.
  4. State the denominator behind your closing ratio, ups or logged opportunities.
  5. Break deliveries into walk-in, internet, phone, and repeat and referral; the last is your book.
  6. Give CSI against the regional benchmark with your survey return rate beside it.
  7. Put the salesperson license number and expiry on the page where your state issues one.

Car sales resume questions, answered

How long should a car sales resume be?

One page. A general sales manager wants units, gross, closing ratio and CSI, and all four fit in a table. With fifteen years across five stores, give the last three in detail with monthly averages and compress the rest to a line each.

What do I put on a car sales resume with no dealership experience?

Anything with a measured conversion or follow-up discipline in it: retail floor conversion and average sale, call center contact and appointment rates, or business development center work. Then say what you can do from day one: work a full floor schedule, follow a lead response routine and complete the paperwork correctly. Stores hire on attitude and attendance, but they still want one number you owned.

Should I include my CSI score?

Yes, if it is good, with the regional benchmark and your survey return rate beside it. CSI affects manufacturer payments and often gates the store's bonus money, so a manager treats it as a risk question as much as a quality one. If your score is weak, leave it off.

Do I need a license to sell cars?

It depends on the state. California requires a vehicle salesperson license for anyone selling vehicles or vehicle contracts for a dealer, valid three years from issuance, and Nevada requires an occupational license renewed every 31 December (California Department of Motor Vehicles, salesperson license guidance; Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, packet OBL337, revised November 2024). Other states license only the dealership. Check yours before you apply.

Is car sales counted separately by the Bureau of Labor Statistics?

No. Vehicle salespeople are counted inside retail sales workers, which held 4,271,400 jobs in 2025 at a median annual wage of $35,560 as of May 2025 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections and May 2025 wage data). No motor vehicle dealer median is published for retail salespersons, and the automobile dealer figure is for parts salespersons. That is why your production record does the work here.
