Summary

A travel agent resume is a one to two page document naming the accreditations that let you book and get paid, the niche you actually sell, and the bookings, passengers and gross sales you can prove. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the accreditation block most applicants leave out, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook for the occupation.

Travel Agent resume examples by experience level

A travel agent resume is a one to two page document answering three questions in order. What are you accredited to do, what do you actually sell, and what did you book.

Those are not interchangeable with experience. An advisor with eight years and no accreditation, no niche and no production number is harder to hire than one with three years, a cruise niche, a CLIA certification and $1.9 million in gross sales they can evidence. The industry runs on supplier relationships and commission, and both attach to specifics.

This page is written for retail and independent leisure selling in the United States, including host agency arrangements.

Resume guide for a travel agent resume

This guide and the corresponding travel agent resume example will cover:

  • How to write a travel agent resume, block by block
  • The accreditation structure that decides whether you can book and get paid
  • Three adaptable summaries: new advisor, established advisor and agency owner
  • The five production numbers worth putting on the page
  • What the occupation pays and where the jobs sit

How to write a travel agent resume

Five blocks: contact header, summary, accreditation and affiliation, production and niche, then employment history, systems and education. One page for your first three years, two once you own an agency or a corporate book. Accreditation belongs near the top because it is a gate, not an achievement: an owner is working out what you can transact from day one.

BlockWhat a reader is checkingWhere it sits
Accreditation and affiliationCan this person book, ticket and be paid commission?Directly under the summary
NicheWhat do they actually sell, and to whom?Same block, in one line
ProductionBookings, passengers, gross sales, commission modelIts own short block with numbers
SystemsWhich GDS or booking platform, by name and version of use?Grouped with skills
Expert Tip

Write the niche in one line and the production in five numbers

"Experienced travel professional who has planned trips worldwide" is the line almost every applicant writes, and it says nothing an agency owner can price.

Name the niche instead: cruise, corporate travel and duty of care, luxury and villa, groups and destination weddings, or independent custom travel. Suppliers pay differently across those and the skills barely overlap.

Then give five numbers: bookings a year, passengers a year, gross sales volume, your commission or fee model, and the share that is repeat or referral. Those five turn a job description into a book of business.

Check the finished file in the free Rezoom ATS resume checker before sending. Larger agencies and travel management companies parse applications first.

Choosing the best resume format for a travel agent resume

Reverse chronological, single column. One page for your first three years, two once you carry an agency, a corporate list or a decade of supplier relationships.

Keep the affiliation attached to the dates. This industry is read as a sequence of arrangements: employed at an agency, contracted under a host, or independently accredited. A reader wants to know which applied when, because it says what your production number represents. If you are moving from a related seat, keep the timeline and convert the numbers, since airline and hotel reservations, tour operator work and cruise line call centers all produce booking volumes.

Put the niche and the certification letters in the header line. CTA, CLIA ACC and MCC are recognized on sight here, and spelling them out costs nothing further down the page. Write the accreditations accurately: an independent contractor books under a host agency's IATAN and ARC numbers, which is a normal arrangement, and describing it correctly beats implying you hold what the agency holds.

Make use of a summary

Four lines: niche and market, accreditation position, production numbers, and one thing you built rather than inherited.

Established travel advisor adaptable resume summary example

Travel advisor specializing in cruise, river cruise and destination weddings, selling under a host agency to clients across Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. Booked 386 reservations and 940 passengers last year for $1.9 million in gross sales at an average commission of 13.4 percent, plus a $250 planning fee on custom itineraries, with 58 percent of business from repeat clients and referrals. Hold the Certified Travel Associate credential and the CLIA Accredited Cruise Counselor certification, and carry preferred advisor standing with two cruise brands.

Agency owner adaptable resume summary example

Owner and lead advisor of an independently accredited leisure agency selling cruise, groups and luxury villa travel, with IATAN accreditation, an ARC number for air ticketing and a California Seller of Travel registration for west coast clients. The agency booked $6.4 million in gross sales across 1,180 reservations and 2,700 passengers last year, 61 percent of it repeat or referred, with preferred standing at three cruise brands and one villa collection. Hold the Certified Travel Associate credential and the CLIA Master Cruise Counselor certification, and work in Sabre with ClientBase.

Travel Advisor, Independent Contractor, Bayside Travel Collective host agency, Providence, RI, February 2019 to Present

Sell cruise, river cruise and destination wedding travel across Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts, booking under the host agency's IATAN and ARC numbers.

Booked 386 reservations and 940 passengers in twelve months for $1.9 million in gross sales, at an average commission of 13.4 percent plus a $250 planning fee on custom itineraries.

Grew repeat and referral business from 22 percent to 58 percent of bookings over four years through post-travel follow-up and a yearly cruise preview evening.

Ran 7 destination weddings and 4 multi-cabin cruise groups last year, 218 passengers and $540,000 in gross sales, with group space held 14 months ahead.

Handled 31 disrupted itineraries across one hurricane season, rebooking 9 within 24 hours with no chargebacks.

Keep your own production separate from the agency's total. Owners can tell the difference, and a number that turns out to be the whole office is the fastest way to lose a second interview.

Your accreditations, your niche and the bookings you can prove

This is the block that decides whether your file is hireable, and most travel resumes leave all three parts out. Start with accreditation, because it governs what you can transact and how you get paid.

An IATA Code through IATAN. IATAN accreditation gives a United States agency a globally recognized IATA Code, and its requirements include proof of legal form of business, travel industry sales and financial records, fiduciary and ethical accountability, competent personnel, state and local licensing, and errors and omissions insurance, waivable with two years of documented industry experience or a relevant certification such as IATA/ARC, CTA, CMP, CMM, CSEP or ASTA VTA (IATAN, accreditation requirements and fees, checked 12 September 2026). An individual advisor holds the ID card instead: you must be an owner, employee or independent contractor at an agency with a valid IATA Code, be on the Agency Personnel List, work at least 20 hours a week in travel sales, have earned at least USD 5,000 in salary or commissions in the past 12 months, and be at least 18 (IATAN, ID Card eligibility conditions, checked 12 September 2026). That earnings threshold is why the card is worth naming: holding it is itself a production claim.

An ARC number for air. Accreditation with the Airlines Reporting Corporation lets an agency issue air tickets, including cash sales and service fees, on more than 200 airlines, and its requirements include a designated agency manager and a designated ARC Specialist who must pass an ARC examination, a financial guarantee as a bond, letter of credit or cash deposit, and documentation of the business location (Airlines Reporting Corporation, agency accreditation datasheet, checked 12 September 2026). If you have been the named ARC Specialist, say so; it is an examined role.

A state seller of travel registration where it applies. California requires registration by anyone who sells, provides, furnishes, contracts for, arranges or advertises air or sea transportation, or land or water vessel transportation over $300, at an annual fee of $100 per business location, with materials submitted ten days before operating in the state; the Attorney General's Office then issues a California Seller of Travel number on the certificate (California Department of Justice, Office of the Attorney General, Seller of Travel registration FAQs, checked 12 September 2026). Put the CST number on the page the way any licensed professional puts a license number on theirs.

Your commercial position: employed advisor, independent contractor under a host, or independently accredited owner. Write which applied in each role, because it tells the reader whose numbers those are.

Then the niche, in one line: cruise and river cruise; corporate travel and duty of care; luxury, villa and private travel; groups and destination weddings; independent custom itineraries. Each has different suppliers, commission structures, seasonality and client acquisition, and an agency hires for one. An advisor who sells everything is describing a start-up year. Then the bookings, in numbers a manager can price.

Adaptable resume production and accreditation example

Accreditation: IATA/IATAN ID Card. Books under host agency IATAN and ARC numbers. California Seller of Travel registration, CST number on file.

Certifications: Certified Travel Associate, The Travel Institute, 2022. CLIA Accredited Cruise Counselor 2021, Master Cruise Counselor 2024.

Niche: cruise, river cruise, destination weddings and multi-cabin groups, New England leisure client base.

Production, last twelve months: 386 reservations, 940 passengers, $1.9 million gross sales, average commission 13.4 percent, $250 planning fee on custom itineraries.

Client base: 58 percent of bookings repeat or referred, 612 active client records.

Supplier standing: preferred advisor with two cruise brands, earned on annual passenger volume.

Systems: Sabre, ClientBase, direct supplier portals for cruise and resort inventory.

Three things make that block credible. Give gross sales and commission separately, because gross sales says how much you moved while the commission rate and fee model say what the agency earns from you. Give passengers as well as bookings: 386 bookings and 940 passengers is a groups and families business, the same booking count with 400 passengers is not, and supplier standing is usually set on passenger volume. Say what share is repeat or referred, since it is the closest thing this occupation has to a retention metric.

And name the certification with its issuing body and year. The Travel Institute's Certified Travel Associate can be entered with a minimum of one year of industry experience selling travel or by passing the TAP examination at 80 percent or higher, and is earned by completing the curriculum and passing the proctored CTA examination at 70 percent or higher (The Travel Institute, Certified Travel Associate, checked 12 September 2026). The Cruise Lines International Association runs a tiered set: the Accredited Cruise Counselor, then the Master Cruise Counselor, which requires the ACC first unless the candidate enrolls in the MCC Experiential Learning Program, then the Elite Cruise Counselor, which requires the MCC (Cruise Lines International Association, certification pages, checked 12 September 2026). Because the tiers stack, naming yours tells a reader how long you have been selling cruise without you saying it.

Statistical insight

A flat occupation where the pay spread is the whole story

Travel agents held 61,500 jobs in 2025, with employment projected to change by 0 percent through 2035, a rise of 100 positions, and about 5,900 openings a year (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections).

The median annual wage was $50,160 as of May 2025, while the lowest 10 percent earned less than $34,610 and the highest 10 percent more than $76,660 (BLS, May 2025). That is more than a two-fold spread inside a small, flat occupation, and almost none of it is tenure.

What explains it is niche, supplier standing and the fee model, which is what the accreditation and production block puts in front of a reader. In an occupation with about 5,900 openings a year, the file that prices itself is the file that gets interviewed.

Build a snapshot of your key travel agent skills

Twelve to fourteen entries in four groups, weighted toward systems and supplier work rather than generic service language.

Adaptable resume skills example

Booking and systems: Sabre, ClientBase client records, direct cruise and resort supplier portals, air fare construction and reissue, group space blocks and name lists

Product: Ocean and river cruise, all-inclusive resorts, destination weddings, multi-cabin groups, villa rental, escorted tours

Commercial: Commission tracking and reconciliation, fee structuring, supplier preferred standing, group marketing, repeat and referral programs

Client and compliance: Travel insurance presentation, passport and visa research, disruption and rebooking, seller of travel disclosure, client record and payment card handling

Name the systems by product. An advisor who already works in the agency's GDS and client record system is producing in week two rather than week eight.

List your education and certifications

Certifications first, then registrations, then the degree. Entry typically asks for a high school diploma or equivalent (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025), so the certificate lines carry more weight than the education line.

Adaptable resume certifications and education example

Certified Travel Associate (CTA), The Travel Institute, 2022

CLIA Master Cruise Counselor (MCC), Cruise Lines International Association, 2024. Accredited Cruise Counselor (ACC), 2021

IATA/IATAN ID Card, current

California Seller of Travel registration, California Department of Justice, Office of the Attorney General, current

Supplier certifications: cruise brand specialist programs, three ocean and two river lines, 2020 to 2025

Associate of Arts, Hospitality and Tourism Management, Community College of Rhode Island, Warwick, RI, 2016

List only what you can evidence today. A lapsed registration, or an accreditation belonging to a host agency you have left, is the kind of detail an owner checks in one phone call.

Choose the right layout and design

Single column, 10 or 11 point, no photograph, no destination imagery. Travel resumes attract more decoration than most, and it parses badly.

Do

Put the accreditation position and the certification letters near the top. Name one niche and sell it. Give bookings, passengers, gross sales, commission model and repeat share. Say whether you were employed, contracted under a host, or independently accredited. Name the GDS and the client record system. List supplier preferred standing and what it was earned on.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not claim an accreditation your host agency holds. Do not present the agency's production as your own. Do not name individual clients or travelers. Do not list every destination you have visited; the reader is buying supplier relationships, not holidays. Do not describe yourself as well-traveled in place of a production number.

Travel agent job market and outlook

A small, flat occupation with steady replacement hiring, heavily concentrated in one industry.

Travel arrangement and reservation services72%$49,650
Self-employed12%Not published separately

Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025.

Two numbers shape a job search here. About 5,900 openings a year against a ten-year change of 100 positions means almost purely replacement hiring, so timing and fit matter more than volume applying. And 12 percent self-employment is high: many of the people reading your resume are owners deciding whether your book would travel.

What salary you can expect as a travel agent

The median annual wage for travel agents was $50,160, or $24.11 an hour, as of May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent under $34,610 and the highest 10 percent over $76,660 (BLS, May 2025). In travel arrangement and reservation services, which employs 72 percent of the occupation, the median was $49,650 (BLS, May 2025).

Read the tails rather than the middle. A spread from under $34,610 to over $76,660 inside a 61,500 job occupation is not explained by seniority; it is explained by what you sell and how you charge. Cruise and group volume earns supplier standing and higher commission tiers. Corporate travel usually pays salary with a service fee model rather than commission. Independent advisors under a host keep a negotiated split that rises with production, and increasingly charge planning fees on custom work, which is the part of the income that does not depend on a supplier's schedule.

So carry gross sales, commission rate and fee model as three separate facts. An owner offering a split is pricing all three, and an advisor who cannot state them is negotiating blind.

Key takeaways for a travel agent resume

  1. Put the accreditation position near the top and describe it accurately.
  2. Name one niche and build the file around it.
  3. Give five production numbers: bookings, passengers, gross sales, fee model, repeat share.
  4. Say whether you were employed, contracted under a host, or independently accredited.
  5. Name the GDS and the client record system, because that is your ramp time.
  6. List supplier preferred standing and what it was earned on.
  7. Never present the agency's production as your own.

Travel agent resume questions, answered

How long should a travel agent resume be?

One page for your first three years. Two once you own an agency, carry a corporate account list, or have a decade of supplier relationships worth showing across several years. The second page should be older roles and supplier detail, nothing else.

Do I need IATAN or ARC accreditation to work as a travel agent?

Not as an individual advisor under a host agency, which is the most common arrangement: the agency holds the IATA Code and the ARC number and you book under them. What you hold personally is the IATA/IATAN ID Card, whose conditions include working at least 20 hours a week in travel sales and having earned at least USD 5,000 in salary or commissions in the past 12 months (IATAN, ID Card eligibility conditions, checked 12 September 2026).

Which certification is worth doing first?

If you sell cruise, the Cruise Lines International Association tiers are the most useful, starting with the Accredited Cruise Counselor and building to the Master Cruise Counselor, which requires the ACC unless you enter through the MCC Experiential Learning Program (Cruise Lines International Association, certification pages, checked 12 September 2026). For general practice, The Travel Institute's Certified Travel Associate can be entered with one year of industry experience selling travel or by passing the TAP examination at 80 percent or higher (The Travel Institute, Certified Travel Associate, checked 12 September 2026).

What do I put on a travel agent resume with no agency experience?

Any booking, itinerary or service work with volume attached: airline or hotel reservations, a tour operator desk, a cruise line contact center, corporate travel support, event and group logistics. Give the volume and one outcome, then name the niche you intend to sell and the certification you are working toward.

Should I put a seller of travel registration on the resume?

Yes, with the issuing state. California requires registration by anyone who sells, arranges or advertises air or sea transportation, or land or water vessel transportation over $300, at an annual fee of $100 per business location, and issues a California Seller of Travel number on the certificate (California Department of Justice, Office of the Attorney General, Seller of Travel registration FAQs, checked 12 September 2026). Other states run their own schemes, so name the state rather than writing that you are registered.
