Summary

A hotel management resume is a one to two page document showing that you can run a property as a business: occupancy, average daily rate, RevPAR and gross operating profit, plus the quality scores the property is inspected against. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the metrics an owner reads first, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook for lodging managers.

Hotel Management resume examples by experience level

In short, a hotel management resume is a one to two page document proving you can hold a property's performance numbers, not just its standards.

In practice, almost every applicant for a management post can describe guest service. However, far fewer can put four numbers on a page and say what they did to each of them. That gap is the hiring decision, because the person reading your file is an owner, an asset manager or a regional director already looking at those four numbers every Monday morning.

Resume guide for a hotel management resume

To start, this guide and the corresponding hotel management resume example will cover:

  • First, how to write a hotel management resume, section by section
  • Then, the four performance numbers that belong above everything else
  • Also, three adaptable summaries: first management role, assistant general manager, general manager
  • What quality inspection scores are worth on the page and how to write them
  • Finally, what the job market looks like and what you can expect to earn

How to write a hotel management resume

Overall, use six sections: contact header, summary, property portfolio, management experience, education and certifications, and skills. In general, one page for a first management role, two once you have carried a full property profit and loss statement.

The order is deliberate. The property portfolio comes early because a reader prices you by the buildings you have run before they read a single bullet: rooms, service level, outlets, meeting space and annual revenue.

SectionWhat it is answeringWhere it goes
Property portfolioWhat size and type of hotel can this person hold?A short block under the summary
Performance numbersDid occupancy, rate, RevPAR and profit move under them?Inside each role, with a before and after
Quality and complianceDo inspections and audits pass on their watch? With the role, dated
CertificationsIs there formal hotel management credentialling behind this?Below education, with the awarding body
Expert Tip

Write the building before you write the title

Hotel titles scale badly. A general manager of a 62 room budget property and a general manager of a 480 room convention hotel share a job title and almost nothing else, and an owner knows it.

So put the building next to the role: rooms, service tier, food and beverage outlets, square feet of meeting space, total revenue if you may state it, headcount, and whether the property is independent, franchised or under third party management. "General Manager, 486 rooms, full service resort, 3 outlets, 22,000 square feet of meeting space, 240 staff, $41.6m total revenue" is read instantly. A paragraph about your leadership philosophy is not.

Run the finished file through the ATS resume checker before you send it. Hotel groups and third party management companies parse applications into a system before a human opens them.

Choosing the best resume format for a hotel management resume

Reverse chronological. One page for a first management role, two once you have owned a property profit and loss statement or more than one building.

A hotel career is read as a progression through departments and property sizes: desk to front office manager, rooms to assistant general manager, then a first general manager posting and a larger one after it. A functional format destroys that pattern. If you have crossed disciplines, from food and beverage into rooms or from revenue into operations, say so in the summary rather than reformatting the page to hide the dates.

Above all, the second line does the work of a headline: it says what you run now and how big it is. As a result, a reader who has to reach the third bullet of your first role to learn the property size has already formed an impression from the words "hospitality leader".

Make use of a summary

Next, write four lines: the property you run now, the performance numbers you moved, the scale of the team, and the credential.

First hotel management role adaptable resume summary example

Front office manager with six years in Orlando hotels, currently leading a rooms front of house team of 22 at a 184 room select service property. Own the rooms division forecast, the arrivals plan and the labor schedule, and took occupancy from 74 percent to 81 percent across two years while average daily rate moved from $148 to $166, lifting RevPAR from $110 to $134. Certified Hospitality Supervisor through the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute and studying for the Certified Hospitality Revenue Manager exam.

Assistant general manager adaptable resume summary example

Assistant general manager at a 312 room full service hotel with two outlets and 14,000 square feet of meeting space, running rooms, housekeeping and engineering for a team of 96. Moved the property's RevPAR index against its five hotel competitive set from 94 to 107 over three years, and held gross operating profit margin at 38.2 percent through a year when the comp set average fell. Certified Hospitality Revenue Manager through the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute.

General manager adaptable resume summary example

General manager of a 486 room full service resort with three outlets, 22,000 square feet of meeting space and $41.6m in total revenue, leading 240 staff and seven department heads. Delivered 79 percent occupancy at a $214 average daily rate for a RevPAR of $169, with gross operating profit of $14.9m at a 35.8 percent margin, and retained the property's AAA Four Diamond designation through four consecutive inspection cycles. Certified Hotel Administrator through the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute.

Right vs wrong: the same hotel management summary, twice

✅ Right❌ Wrong
General manager of a 486 room full service resort with three outlets and $41.6m in total revenue.Experienced hospitality leader with a proven track record in hotel operations.
Delivered 79 percent occupancy at a $214 average daily rate for a RevPAR of $169.Consistently drove revenue growth and operational excellence.
Gross operating profit of $14.9m at a 35.8 percent margin, with AAA Four Diamond retained across four inspection cycles.Maintained the highest standards of quality and guest satisfaction.

Specifically, the right column is a property an owner can picture and a result they can price. By contrast, the left column could be written by any of the forty people who applied.

Outline your hotel management experience

Adaptable resume employment history example

General Manager, The Wekiva Palms Resort, 486 rooms, full service, 3 outlets, 22,000 square feet of meeting space, third party managed for an institutional owner, Orlando, FL, February 2023 to Present

Run a $41.6m total revenue property with 240 staff and seven department heads, reporting to a regional vice president and to the owner's asset manager.

Delivered 79 percent occupancy at a $214 average daily rate, a RevPAR of $169, and gross operating profit of $14.9m at a 35.8 percent margin, against a budget of 34.1 percent.

Took the property's RevPAR index against its six hotel competitive set from 101 to 112 over three years, by rebuilding the group and contract mix rather than discounting transient rate.

Retained the AAA Four Diamond designation through four consecutive inspection cycles and closed every annual property audit finding inside the correction window.

Ran a $4.1m guest room renovation over 14 weeks, keeping 62 percent of inventory in service and finishing $180,000 under budget, and cut hourly turnover from 68 percent to 43 percent by rebuilding the shift pattern and the first ninety days of induction.

The four numbers a hotel owner will ask you about

Occupancy, average daily rate, RevPAR and gross operating profit. Every conversation about your candidacy passes through those four, so put them on the page before anyone has to ask.

Occupancy is the percentage of available rooms sold in a period: rooms sold divided by rooms available. Average daily rate is room revenue divided by rooms sold. RevPAR, revenue per available room, is rooms revenue divided by rooms available, which is why it differs from average daily rate: it counts the rooms you did not sell (STR, part of CoStar, industry glossary).

In fact, that third definition is why RevPAR is the number an owner trusts. After all, occupancy alone can be bought with rate, and rate alone can be held by selling fewer rooms. RevPAR is the one of the three that cannot be improved by damaging another, which is why a resume that moves occupancy and rate in opposite directions and calls it a win reads as inexperienced.

Gross operating profit and hotel owner scrutiny

Gross operating profit is the fourth, and it separates a department head from a general manager. STR describes GOPPAR, gross operating profit per available room, as a measure of management's ability to produce profits by generating sales and controlling the operating expenses over which they have the most direct control, which is a fair description of the job. Hotel operating statements are standardized under the Uniform System of Accounts for the Lodging Industry, published by Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals, whose 12th revised edition carries a mandatory adoption date of 1 January 2026, so the profit line you cite is comparable across properties.

Adaptable resume performance numbers example

Rooms performance, most recent full year: 79 percent occupancy, $214 average daily rate, $169 RevPAR, 486 rooms

Index: RevPAR index 112 against a six hotel comp set, up from 101 in 2023

Profit: total revenue $41.6m, gross operating profit $14.9m, GOP margin 35.8 percent against a 34.1 percent budget

Quality: AAA Four Diamond retained across four inspection cycles; overall guest satisfaction 8.9, up from 8.1

Three rules for writing these numbers, all of which come up in interviews.

Give the period. A RevPAR figure with no year is unreadable, because the industry's numbers moved together across the last several years and a reader needs to know whether your gain was yours or the market's.

Give the comparison. STR defines the RevPAR index, also called the revenue generating index, as a hotel's RevPAR divided by that of an aggregated group of hotels, multiplied by 100, with 100 meaning the property is capturing its fair share of the market. For example, moving from 94 to 107 is a claim about your management. Moving from $118 to $131 in RevPAR during a recovering market may not be.

Say what you did. In addition, every number needs a mechanism attached, because the reader's question is whether it will repeat in their building. "Rebuilt the group and contract mix rather than discounting transient rate" is a mechanism. "Implemented revenue strategies" is not.

Expert Tip

Quality inspections are the number nobody writes down

The performance numbers tell an owner what you earned. The inspection results tell them what condition you left the asset in, and the second question follows the first in every interview.

If your property is rated by AAA, the designation and its continuity are worth stating plainly. AAA says its inspectors conduct annual, unannounced inspections of every Diamond hotel, remaining anonymous to get a true-to-life experience, and that the evaluation runs to 82 points of inspection across rooms, bathrooms and public spaces. A designation held across four consecutive cycles is a claim about sustained condition, not a plaque.

If your property is inspected under a brand quality assurance program, write the score, the date and whether findings closed inside the correction window, and write your life safety record the same way. These are lines a general manager has and a department head usually does not, and they are among the easiest for an owner to verify.

Build a snapshot of your key skills

Generally, list twelve to sixteen entries in four groups: commercial, operations, finance, and people and compliance. Every entry should be something an owner could ask you to demonstrate.

Adaptable resume skills example

Commercial: Revenue management and rate strategy, Segment and channel mix, Competitive set and index analysis, Group and contract negotiation, Forecasting and displacement

Operations: Rooms division, Housekeeping productivity, Engineering and preventive maintenance, Food and beverage outlet oversight, Banquet and conference services, Capital renovation delivery

Finance: Property profit and loss ownership, Annual budget and capital planning, Labor model and cost per occupied room, Purchasing and contract renegotiation, Owner and asset manager reporting

People and compliance: Recruitment, induction and retention, Department head development, Quality assurance and AAA inspection readiness, Life safety and emergency planning, PCI DSS payment controls

List your education and certifications

The Bureau of Labor Statistics gives the typical entry level education for lodging managers as a high school diploma or equivalent, with less than five years of work experience in a related occupation (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections). A degree helps but it is not the gate, and certifications carry more weight here than in most management occupations.

Meanwhile, the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute awards the recognized credentials. Its Certified Hotel Administrator is aimed at hotel general managers and senior level executives, and the Institute also awards the Certified Hospitality Revenue Manager, the Certified Hospitality Manager and the Certified Hospitality Supervisor for earlier stages. Moreover, the American Hotel and Lodging Association describes these designations as portable and industry recognized, which matters in a career that moves between owners, brands and management companies.

Choose the right layout and design

Finally, use a single column, 11 or 12 point type, one or two pages, no photograph. Put a small performance table inside your current role if the numbers are strong; four figures in a row are read faster than four figures in a sentence.

Do

Name the room count, service tier, outlets and meeting space for every property. Give occupancy, average daily rate, RevPAR and gross operating profit with the period attached. Add the index against a competitive set wherever you have it. Attach a mechanism to every result. State the inspection and audit record. Say whether the property was independent, franchised or third party managed, since the reporting line differs.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not write "increased revenue" without the measure it was increased in. Do not cite a RevPAR figure with no year. Do not claim a profit line you did not own; an owner will ask which expense lines reported to you. Do not describe a guest complaint involving an identifiable person. Do not send the same resume to an owner-operator and to a third party management company.

Statistical insight

54,800 jobs, 5,500 openings, and a fifth of the occupation self-employed

Lodging managers are a small occupation: 54,800 jobs in 2025, projected to grow 4 percent to 2035, with about 5,500 openings a year over the decade (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections).

The Handbook puts 66 percent of lodging managers in traveler accommodation and 21 percent self-employed, a much larger self-employed share than most management occupations carry. That second figure is the independent and small property half of the market: inns, boutique hotels and owner-operated properties where the manager is also the proprietor.

It changes what your resume is for. Against 5,500 openings a year nationally, you are rarely one of hundreds of applicants; you are one of a handful, all experienced, compared line by line by someone who knows the numbers. That is an argument for precision rather than persuasion.

Next, where lodging managers work, and what those settings pay:

SettingShare of employmentMedian annual wage (May 2025)
Traveler accommodation66%$67,550
RV parks and recreational camps4%$59,330

Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025. Notably, self-employed workers are 21% of the occupation.

What salary you can expect in hotel management

For instance, the median annual wage for lodging managers was $69,250 as of May 2025, or $33.29 an hour (BLS, May 2025). By comparison, within traveler accommodation, the largest setting at 66 percent of the occupation, the median was $67,550, and in RV parks and recreational camps it was $59,330.

Still, that median covers an unusually wide job. The same title holds the manager of a 40 room roadside property and the general manager of a large convention hotel, and the spread between them is far larger than in most management occupations. Which end you sit at is decided by the size and revenue of the buildings you have run, which is the first argument for putting the property portfolio near the top of the page.

The second argument, in turn, is that much of the money sits outside base pay, in a bonus written against measurable targets: a RevPAR or index target, a gross operating profit target, a guest satisfaction or quality inspection threshold, sometimes a retention target. A candidate who already reports in those terms is easy to write a bonus plan for; one who describes their last job in adjectives is not, and the difference shows up in the offer.

Key takeaways for a hotel management resume

  1. First, put the building next to the title: rooms, tier, outlets, meeting space, revenue, headcount.
  2. Then give occupancy, average daily rate, RevPAR and gross operating profit, each with its period.
  3. Also add the index against a competitive set; relative performance is what an owner trusts.
  4. Attach a mechanism to every number, since the reader is asking whether it will repeat.
  5. In addition, write the inspection and audit record; it is the asset condition half of the job.
  6. Say whether the property was independent, franchised or third party managed.
  7. Finally, name the credential and the awarding body, and keep the file to two pages.

Hotel management resume questions, answered

How long should a hotel management resume be?

One page for a first management role, two once you have owned a property profit and loss statement. Two pages is normal at general manager level, because the property portfolio, the performance numbers and the capital projects all have to fit. Three pages is not.

Which numbers matter most on a hotel management resume?

Occupancy, average daily rate, RevPAR and gross operating profit, in that order, each with a period and a comparison. Add the RevPAR index against your competitive set wherever you have it: STR defines it as your RevPAR against an aggregated group of hotels times 100, with 100 meaning fair share, and that single figure tells an owner whether you beat your market or merely rode it.

Do I need a hospitality degree to move into hotel management?

No. The Bureau of Labor Statistics gives the typical entry level education for lodging managers as a high school diploma or equivalent with less than five years of related work experience (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections). A degree shortens the route and helps with corporate roles, but the occupation is entered from operations, and the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute's certifications are the usual formal credential.

How do I write about a property that underperformed?

Write it honestly, with the reason and the response. A renovation year, a comp set that added supply or a brand conversion are all readable to anyone who knows the industry, and a candidate who explains a bad year in one clause and shows what they controlled beats one whose history has a gap in it. What does not survive an interview is a selective figure chosen because it was the only one that rose.

What changes when I apply to a third party management company?

The reporting discipline becomes part of the product. A third party operator is judged on forecast accuracy, monthly reporting and the defense of the profit line, so your resume should show that you have reported to an asset manager, built a budget that held and closed audit findings on time. Those lines matter less to an owner-operator who will be standing in the lobby with you.
