Summary

A waitress resume is a one page document showing the size of the section you can carry, the covers you put through it, how fast your tables turn and which shifts a manager trusts you to close. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the numbers to pull off your own point of sale reports, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook for waiters and waitresses.

Waitress resume examples by experience level

A waitress resume is a one page document that tells a manager how big a section you can carry, how many covers you put through it, how fast it turns, and which shifts they could hand you without standing behind you.

Everything else on a waitressing resume is interchangeable. Every applicant has taken orders, carried plates and worked with a team. What separates two files is capacity: five tables or nine, forty covers or a hundred and twenty, a Tuesday lunch or a Saturday close with the bank in your hand at midnight. Restaurants hire on capacity, because the rota is built on it.

Resume guide for a waitress resume

This guide and the corresponding waitress resume example will cover:

  • How to write a waitress resume, section by section
  • Why your section size, covers and turn times belong on the page
  • Three adaptable summaries: new, experienced and lead server
  • Which shifts to name, and what closing a shift actually signals
  • What the job market looks like, what you can expect to earn, and how tip credit works

How to write a waitress resume

Five blocks: contact header, summary, the section block, floor experience, and skills with certifications. One page. Nobody reads a second page of a waitressing resume.

Put the section block directly under the summary. It is the part a floor manager reads slowly, because it is the only part that predicts whether you can be scheduled on a Friday.

BlockWhat it is answeringWhere it goes
Section and shiftsHow many tables can I give her, and on which nights?Directly under the summary
Floor experienceWhat volume has she held, at what average check, and for how long?Reverse chronological, with covers

Expert Tip

Your alcohol permit is a state rule, so name the state and the agency

There is no national server permit. Each state's alcohol agency sets its own rule, and the rules genuinely differ, so write yours with the agency named rather than writing "alcohol certified".

Louisiana is one of the states with a hard requirement for the individual server. Under the state's responsible vendor law, each server must complete an approved training course within 45 days of commencing employment and hold a valid server permit, permits are valid for four years, and refresher training is required at least once every four years (Louisiana Revised Statutes, Title 26, responsible vendor program, published by the Louisiana State Legislature; the program is administered by the Louisiana Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control).

Write it as a line a manager can act on: "Louisiana ATC Responsible Vendor server permit #RV-LA-3318204, valid through 2027." If you are moving to another state, check that state's agency before you write anything, because a permit from one state generally does not transfer.

Run the finished file through the ATS resume checker before you send it. Restaurant groups above a handful of sites collect applications through software.

Choosing the best resume format for a waitress resume

Reverse chronological, one page, single column. List every restaurant with months and years, including the short ones. Hospitality reads gaps and short stints far more calmly than other industries do, but it reads a hidden timeline as something being hidden.

Skills-first formats fail here for a specific reason: without dates and venues, a reader cannot tell whether your covers number came from a diner at 11:00 or a hundred-seat dining room on a Saturday.

Two facts belong in the header: the section you carry and the permit that lets you sell alcohol in your state. Both answer scheduling questions.

Make use of a summary

Three or four lines: years on the floor, the section you carry, your covers and average check, and the shifts you are trusted with.

New waitress adaptable resume summary example

Server with a year on the floor of a 70 seat neighbourhood restaurant, carrying a 5 table, 18 seat section through lunch and early dinner at 35 to 45 covers a shift. Trained on Toast, on the full opening and closing sidework list, and on the restaurant's allergen procedure. Hold a Louisiana Responsible Vendor server permit and am cleared to sell alcohol. Available for weekends and currently training on the Sunday brunch station.

Experienced waitress adaptable resume summary example

Server with six years in full service, currently carrying a 9 table, 32 seat section at a 140 seat seafood restaurant. Put 70 to 85 covers through the section on a Friday dinner at an average check of $46, with tables turning in 68 minutes against a house target of 75. Trusted with open, close and the Sunday brunch floor, including cash-out, tip declaration and the nightly bank drop. Louisiana Responsible Vendor server permit current through 2027.

Lead server adaptable resume summary example

Lead server and floor trainer with fourteen years in full service, running a 10 table section in a 180 seat dining room and the private dining floor of 40. Rebuilt the opening and closing sidework lists and the section map, which took average turn time from 84 minutes to 71 without shortening any guest's meal. Train and sign off every new server, and close four shifts a week including the bank and the safe. Hold a Louisiana Department of Health Food Safety Certificate and a current Responsible Vendor server permit.

Right vs wrong: the same waitress summary, twice

✅ Right❌ Wrong
Carry a 9 table, 32 seat section at a 140 seat seafood restaurant.Experienced waitress in a busy restaurant environment.

Trusted with open, close, cash-out, tip declaration and the nightly bank drop.Reliable team player who always goes the extra mile.

The right column can be put on the Friday rota tonight. The left column is a trial shift and a week of finding out.

Outline your floor experience

Restaurant, city, seat count, your title and dates, then three or four bullets. Every bullet carries a number: tables, seats, covers, minutes, dollars or people.

The seat count matters as much as the title. "Server, 140 seat seafood restaurant" and "Server, 38 seat cafe" are different jobs, and a reader who has to guess will guess low.

Adaptable resume employment history example

Server, Crescent Oyster House, 140 seats, New Orleans, LA, June 2020 to Present

Carry a 9 table, 32 seat section in the main dining room, 70 to 85 covers on a Friday or Saturday dinner and 50 to 60 on a weeknight, at an average check of $46.

Hold a 68 minute average turn time against a house target of 75, tracked in the table management system across a full year.

Ring $1,900 to $2,400 a shift on Toast; complete cash-out, tip declaration and the nightly bank drop as a closing server.

Work the Sunday brunch floor at 120 to 140 covers across the shift, a service with a different pace, a different menu and a different sidework list.

Run the restaurant's allergen procedure at the table: repeat back, ticket flag, kitchen confirmation and a hand delivery by the server who took the order.

Train new servers on the section map and the sidework lists; eleven signed off to a solo section on a five-shift progression.

The section you can carry: covers, turns and the shifts you are trusted with

This is the block that decides a waitressing hire, and almost no resume contains it.

A floor manager building next week's rota is not thinking about your personality. They are looking at a seating chart divided into sections, a forecast of covers by day part, and a list of names. The only question they are answering is which name goes on which section on which night. A resume that answers that question before they ask it is a resume that gets a start date.

Write it as four labeled lines.

Adaptable resume section and shifts example

Section: 9 tables, 32 seats, main dining room. Also run the 40 seat private dining room for buyouts and the 6 table patio in season.

Covers and check: 70 to 85 covers on a Friday or Saturday dinner, 50 to 60 on a weeknight, 120 to 140 across Sunday brunch. Average check $46 at dinner, $28 at brunch. Sales of $1,900 to $2,400 a dinner shift.

Turn time: 68 minute average against a house target of 75, measured in the table management system. Two full turns on the section on a Friday, three on the patio in season.

Shifts trusted with: Open, close, Sunday brunch and festival weeks. Closing duties include sidework sign-off across the floor, cash-out and tip declaration, the safe and the bank drop. Key holder since 2023.

Four rules make those lines worth reading.

Get the numbers from the system, not from memory. Every modern point of sale will print your sales, cover count and check average by shift, and most table management systems will give you turn time. Ask for a month of your own reports before you leave a job, because you cannot get them afterwards.

Give the section in tables and seats. Nine tables can mean 18 seats of deuces or 40 seats of six tops, and the difference is most of the job.

Say which shifts, not how many. "Available evenings and weekends" is an availability statement. "Trusted with open, close and Sunday brunch" is a statement about trust, and closing in particular tells a manager that a previous employer handed you money, a till and an empty building.

Name the hard weeks. In New Orleans that is Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest and the football calendar; elsewhere it is graduation weekend, the county fair or the first warm Saturday of the year. Working a venue's worst week is the strongest single line a server can put on a page, because everyone in the industry knows what it costs.

Statistical insight

Turnover, not growth, is what makes this a hiring market

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of waiters and waitresses to grow 2 percent between 2025 and 2035, from 2,284,400 to 2,330,900, an increase of 46,500 jobs over the decade. Yet it also projects about 423,100 openings a year (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, Waiters and Waitresses, 2025-35 projections, last modified 27 August 2026).

Those two figures together say something specific: roughly 4.2 million openings across the decade, against 46,500 of actual growth. Almost every opening exists because somebody left.

That is the single best argument for writing tenure and trust onto your resume rather than personality. A manager who is replacing their third server since June is not looking for the most charming file in the stack. They are looking for the one that suggests a person who will still be there at Christmas, which is why a three year stint, a key holder line and a closing shift beat any adjective you could choose.

Build a snapshot of your key skills

Twelve to sixteen entries in four groups: floor, guest and sales, compliance and cash, and systems.

Adaptable resume skills example

Floor: Section management, Sequence of service, Multiple table timing, Expo and food running, Opening and closing sidework, Section map and floor plan design

Guest and sales: Menu knowledge and specials, Dessert and add-on attach, Wine and beer by the glass, Large party and buyout service, Complaint recovery at the table

Compliance and cash: Responsible alcohol service, Identification checking and refusal, Allergen procedure at the table, Cash-out and tip declaration, Bank drop and safe, Key holding

Systems: Toast, Aloha and Micros point of sale, OpenTable and Resy table management, Handheld ordering, Split and shared check handling

List your education and certifications

Formal education is not a gate. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists no formal educational credential as the typical entry-level requirement for waiters and waitresses (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, last modified 27 August 2026). Lead with the alcohol permit, because that is the one a manager has to verify before your first shift.

Adaptable resume certifications example

Louisiana Responsible Vendor Server Permit, Louisiana Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control, #RV-LA-3318204, issued 2023, valid through 2027

Food Safety Certificate, Louisiana Department of Health, issued 2024

Allergen awareness training, completed in house, 2025

High School Diploma, Benjamin Franklin High School, New Orleans, LA, 2011

Two notes on the food safety line. Louisiana is one of the states where the establishment's certificate is a manager-level qualification: the Louisiana Department of Health issues a Food Safety Manager Certificate after an approved course and exam, and states that a food handler certificate is not accepted in its place (Louisiana Department of Health, Food Safety Certification). Holding one as a server is therefore a genuine differentiator, not a box tick.

Other states run different systems, some requiring a food handler card for every employee within a set number of days. Check your own state health authority rather than copying a line from someone else's resume.

Choose the right layout and design

Single column, 11 point type, clear headings, no photograph. Send a PDF unless the form asks otherwise. One page, and if the material runs over, cut the oldest job rather than shrinking the section block.

Do

Give the section in tables and seats, and the restaurant in seats. Put covers, average check and turn time on the page with the period they cover. Name the shifts you are trusted with, especially close. Write the alcohol permit with the state agency and the expiry. Name the worst week of the year at your venue and say you worked it. Pull the numbers off the point of sale before you leave a job.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not write "fast-paced environment" or "team player"; they are on every file. Do not claim a covers number you cannot explain the source of. Do not hide short stints; date them and move on. Do not list an expired server permit without marking it expired. Do not include a photograph, and do not use a two column template, because larger groups parse applications before a person reads them.

Waitress job market and outlook

A very large occupation with slow growth and enormous replacement demand, which makes stability the scarce quality rather than experience.

The medians sit close together, which is worth knowing before you chase a sector change. What separates earnings here is not the industry code, it is the average check of the room and the covers you can hold at once. That is why the section block belongs on your page.

What salary you can expect as a waitress

The median wage for waiters and waitresses was $16.94 an hour, or $35,230 a year, as of May 2025 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025 wage data). That median already blends base pay and tips, which is why it looks unlike the hourly rate on your pay stub.

The base underneath it is set by the tip credit rules where you work, and they vary sharply by state. Federal law allows an employer to pay a tipped employee a cash wage of $2.13 an hour and take a tip credit of up to $5.12 against the federal minimum wage of $7.25, provided tips make up the difference. Louisiana has no state minimum wage law, so the federal rule applies there directly, while other states require a much higher cash wage before tips (U.S. Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division, minimum wages for tipped employees, table revised 1 July 2026).

For a waitress, this has one practical consequence for the resume. Your earnings are driven by the room, not by the job title, and the room is described by three numbers you can prove: average check, covers per shift and turns per section. A server who can hold nine tables at a $46 check through two turns is worth visibly more per shift than one who holds five at $22, and the resume that says so is negotiating before the interview starts.

The other lever is the shift. Friday and Saturday dinner, Sunday brunch and the festival weeks are where the money is, and they go to the servers management trusts. Naming them is how you ask for them.

Key takeaways for a waitress resume

  1. Give your section in tables and seats, and the restaurant in seats.
  2. Put covers per shift, average check and turn time on the page, with the period they cover.
  3. Name the shifts you are trusted with, and say plainly if you close.
  4. Write the alcohol server permit with the state agency, the number and the expiry.
  5. Say you worked the venue's hardest week of the year.
  6. Show tenure, because almost every opening in this occupation is a replacement.
  7. One page, single column, dates on every job, no photograph.

Waitress resume questions, answered

How long should a waitress resume be?

One page. Even fourteen years and four restaurants fit once you stop describing duties and start giving section sizes, covers and shifts.

What should I put on a waitress resume with no experience?

Put capacity you can evidence from somewhere else: any job with a queue, a till or a rota. Then the things that remove obstacles for a manager, which are your availability by shift, whether you can close, and whether you already hold your state's alcohol server permit. A candidate who arrives with a permit in hand can be scheduled sooner, and managers know the difference.

Do I need an alcohol server permit to be a waitress?

It depends entirely on your state. In Louisiana each server must complete approved training within 45 days of starting work and hold a server permit valid for four years, with refresher training at least every four years (Louisiana Revised Statutes, Title 26, responsible vendor program; administered by the Louisiana Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control). Other states place the requirement on the business rather than the individual, and some require nothing at all. Check your own state's alcohol agency, and put the agency's name on your resume beside the permit.

How do I find my covers, average check and turn time?

They are already in your restaurant's systems. Ask your manager for your own sales and cover reports for a recent month, and for turn time from the table management system if there is one. Do it while you still work there. If your venue has no reporting, count covers by hand for four shifts and write the range rather than inventing a figure.

Should I say I can close on my waitress resume?

Yes, in those words, and list what closing includes at your venue: sidework sign-off, cash-out, tip declaration, the safe, the bank drop, key holding. Closing is the clearest proof of trust available in this job, and it is the one a manager most needs to fill when somebody leaves.

Is waitress or server the better title to use?

Use the title on your own contract and stay consistent within the file, then match the wording of the posting when you apply. Many restaurants and most large groups have moved to "server" as the operational term, so if you are applying to one, "Server" as your headline with "waitress" in the body of a line costs you nothing and reads naturally either way.
