Summary

A travel nurse resume is a one to two page document built around an assignment table: facility type, unit, contract length, shift, ratio and electronic record system for every contract you have finished. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the compact license map and credential pack that decide how fast you can start, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics wage and outlook data for registered nurses.

Travel Nurse resume examples by experience level

A travel nurse resume is a one to two page document built around an assignment table, because a recruiter and a hiring manager both read that table before anything else you wrote.

In short, travel hiring answers one question: how quickly can this nurse be productive without orientation. In contrast, a staff hire gets weeks of onboarding and a preceptor. A traveler often gets two days, then takes a full assignment. Everything on your page exists to answer that question, and a table answers it faster than a paragraph can.

Resume guide for a travel nurse resume

Specifically, this guide and the corresponding travel nurse resume example will cover:

  • How to write a travel nurse resume as an assignment table, not a job history
  • Why facility type, unit, length, shift, ratio and electronic record belong in every row
  • Three adaptable summaries: first-time, established and multi-specialty traveler
  • The license map and the credential pack that decide your start date
  • What Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows about registered nurse pay and growth

How to write a travel nurse resume

Overall, it takes six blocks: contact header, summary, licensure and certifications, the assignment table, a short skills block, and education. Two pages is normal here, because an assignment table is long by design, and compressing it removes what the reader came for.

For example, a staff nurse resume can open with a career narrative. A travel resume opens with what makes you deployable, because the recruiter is matching you against a requisition with a start date.

SectionWhat it is answeringWhere it goes
License statusWhich states can they work in, and from when?Header block, above experience
Certification packAre the cards current, or does this need chasing?Same block, with expiry months
Assignment tableHave they done this unit, at this size, on this system? The body of the page
Specialty and floatWhat else can they be moved to when census shifts? One line under the table
EducationDiploma, associate or bachelor's, and where verified?Short, at the end
Expert Tip

Write every assignment as a row, not as a paragraph

A hiring manager reviewing travelers runs a compatibility check, not a character assessment. They want to know whether you have worked a unit like theirs, at their size, on their record system, at their ratio, on their shift.

Six facts per assignment do that: facility type and bed count, unit and its bed count, contract length, shift, your typical ratio, and the electronic record system. As a row, a recruiter clears it in four seconds. As prose, the same facts take a minute to find and often go unfound.

Keep the rows uniform. A table where one row gives the ratio and the next does not reads as a table with something missing, and the reader fills that gap with the least favorable assumption.

Run the finished file through the ATS resume checker before you send it to an agency. Agency systems parse your file into a structured profile, and a table drawn with text boxes is what that parse loses.

Choosing the best resume format for a travel nurse resume

Reverse chronological, single column, two pages once you have more than four completed contracts. However, a travel record fitting on one page usually means somebody deleted the detail that gets them hired.

One formatting decision is unique to this occupation: how to handle a long list of short jobs. Meanwhile, a staff reader might see eight employers in three years as instability. A travel reader sees eight completed contracts, so label the block as travel assignments and name the agency on each row. Also say whether each contract ran to term and whether you extended, because extensions are the strongest single line on a traveler's page.

Group your staff years separately from the travel block rather than interleaving them. After all, the reader is scanning for pattern, and a mixed list destroys it.

First, put your license type and status in the header, not in a certifications block at the bottom. That matters because a recruiter screening thirty files for a start date three weeks out is filtering on that line. Give your permanent address city and state too: agencies ask early, and on a travel resume it is a working fact rather than a personal detail.

Make use of a summary

Four lines: specialty and years, the shape of your travel record, your license status, and one fact about how fast you start.

First-time travel nurse adaptable resume summary example

Medical-surgical and telemetry registered nurse with three years on a 38-bed unit in a 240-bed community hospital, taking a first travel contract. Carries a typical assignment of five patients on nights, with telemetry monitoring, post-surgical care and a high volume of medication reconciliation. Holds a multistate registered nurse license, current BLS, ACLS and NIH Stroke Scale certification, and has worked in both Epic and Meditech. Available on two weeks notice and open to 13-week contracts anywhere in the compact.

Established travel nurse adaptable resume summary example

Travel registered nurse with seven years in medical-surgical and telemetry, four of them on contract across five facilities in five states. Every contract completed to term and two extended at facility request. Typical assignment is a 30 to 40 bed telemetry or step-down unit at a ratio of four to five patients on nights, with Epic, Cerner and Meditech all worked in production. Holds a multistate license, starts with two days of orientation, and floats to medical-surgical, step-down and observation.

Multi-specialty travel nurse adaptable resume summary example

Travel registered nurse with eleven years of practice and seven on contract across nine facilities in six states, covering telemetry, step-down, medical-surgical and progressive care. Ten contracts completed to term, four extended, two of them rapid starts taken within five days of offer. Served as an electronic record go-live support nurse on two conversions and mentors first-time travelers through the credentialing pack. Holds a multistate license plus two single-state licenses, and keeps a complete compliance file ready to submit the day an offer lands.

Right vs wrong: the same travel nurse summary, twice

✅ Right❌ Wrong
Travel RN, seven years in medical-surgical and telemetry, four on contract across five facilities in five states.Experienced travel nurse with a passion for helping patients wherever they are.
Typical assignment: 30 to 40 bed telemetry or step-down unit, four to five patients on nights, Epic, Cerner and Meditech in production.Skilled in a variety of hospital settings and electronic health record systems.
Every contract completed to term, two extended at facility request; starts with two days of orientation.Flexible, reliable and quick to adapt to new environments.

For instance, a recruiter can match the left column to a requisition this afternoon. The right column needs an interview before anybody learns anything, and agencies often hire travelers without one.

Outline your assignment experience

In practice, the assignment table is your experience section. Each row is one contract, and therefore each row carries the same six facts.

Write the assignment record and the license map

Two things decide whether a facility hires you for a contract: whether your record shows you have done this before, and whether you can legally be on the unit by the start date.

The assignment table is the argument. Nothing else on a traveler's resume carries the same weight, because a facility is buying a specific capability for a specific window. Keep the six facts in the same order on every row: facility type and bed count, unit and bed count, contract length, shift, ratio, electronic record system. Then add the two facts most travelers leave out: whether the contract ran to term, and whether you extended it. A row ending "extended once from 13" is a reference from the facility written in your own resume, and it costs six words.

Say what you float to. Census moves, and a traveler who floats is worth more than one who does not. Write the specific units you accept, not "flexible", and the number of float shifts you actually worked if it was substantial. A manager reading "floated to medical-surgical, step-down and observation, 18 float shifts in 13 weeks" knows what they are getting.

License map and start dates for travel nurses

Then the license map, which sets your start date. The Nurse Licensure Compact lets a nurse hold one multistate license and practice in all compact states, and NCSBN reports that 43 jurisdictions are currently part of the compact (NCSBN, nursecompact.com, read 16 September 2026). That single fact is why travel nursing works at the speed it does, and why your license line belongs in the header.

Write three things about licensure, plainly. First, whether your license is multistate or single-state, and which state issued it, since a multistate license comes from your primary state of residence. Secondly, any additional single-state licenses, with status and expiry. Third, any license in progress. After all, a recruiter treats "application submitted" as a different fact from "license active", so do not blur them, and check your own state against the NCSBN compact map rather than what a colleague told you two years ago.

The credential pack and record systems

Then the credential pack, which is what delays start dates. Travel offers are lost to paperwork more often than to skill. Keep one compliance file and list its contents as a block, with expiry months:

  • Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, with expiry months
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support where the unit needs it
  • NIH Stroke Scale, and any unit certification you hold
  • Annual competencies, skills checklists and the specialty exam your agency uses
  • Health and compliance documents: immunization titers, tuberculosis screening, respirator fit testing, current physical
  • Background check, drug screen and references with current contact details

Writing the expiry month next to each card changes how a recruiter reads you. In short, it says the file exists and is current, which is the whole claim.

Name the electronic record systems. Epic, Cerner, Meditech, Allscripts, whichever you have actually charted in, and say which you used in production rather than in training. A facility running the same system can shorten your orientation, which is a direct reason to pick you over an equally qualified nurse.

A note on agencies. Agency credentials are theirs rather than yours. The Joint Commission runs a Health Care Staffing Services certification program that staffing firms can hold (The Joint Commission, read 16 September 2026). Name your agency on each assignment row so a manager can verify the contract, and leave the rest to the agency.

Build a snapshot of your key skills

Then list ten to fourteen entries in three groups: clinical, equipment and systems, and the operational skills specific to contract work. In other words, keep it to skills you would take an assignment on tomorrow.

Adaptable resume skills example

Clinical: telemetry monitoring and rhythm interpretation, post-surgical care, medication reconciliation on admission and transfer, wound care and drain management, tracheostomy care, blood product administration, diabetic management and insulin titration, end of life and comfort care

Equipment and systems: Epic, Cerner and Meditech in production, telemetry central monitoring, patient-controlled analgesia pumps, enteral feeding pumps, sequential compression and specialty surfaces, barcode medication administration

Contract and operations: two-day unit orientation to full assignment, float to medical-surgical, step-down and observation, agency compliance file management, multistate licensure, electronic record go-live support, precepting agency staff onto unit workflow

List your education, licensure and certifications

Licenses first with status and expiry, then certifications with expiry months, then your degree. On a travel resume the degree matters least, because the license is what gets verified.

Adaptable resume licensure and education example

Registered Nurse, multistate license, primary state of residence Idaho, #RN-77341, active, expires 2028

Registered Nurse, California, #RN-C-604118, active, expires 2027. Registered Nurse, Michigan, #RN-4471902, active, expires 2027.

Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, American Heart Association, both expire March 2028. NIH Stroke Scale, current.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Boise State University, Boise, ID, 2015

Compliance file current: immunization titers, annual tuberculosis screening, respirator fit testing, physical, background check, drug screen, three clinical references

Choose the right layout and design

Finally, keep a single column, 11 or 12 point, real table markup or plain aligned text, no photograph, no icons. Agency systems parse your file into a structured profile before a human opens it, and a two-column layout scrambles the fields that matter here: license, expiry, unit, dates.

Do

Build the experience section as an assignment table with the same six facts on every row. Name the agency on each row. Say whether each contract ran to term and whether you extended. Put license type, state and status in the header. Give expiry months for every card. Name the electronic record systems you worked in production. State the units you float to by name.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not present eight short contracts as if they were eight failed jobs; label the block as travel assignments. Do not write "various hospitals" where a facility name and bed count belong. Do not list a license as active when the application is only submitted. Do not leave the ratio off some rows and on others. Do not claim an electronic record you saw in a training module. Do not name or describe an identifiable patient from any assignment.

Travel nurse job market and outlook

However, the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes no separate Occupational Outlook Handbook profile for travel nursing. Travel is a contracting arrangement rather than an occupation, so the figures below cover registered nurses as a whole, the reference point every recruiter uses.

Statistical insight

Where the 3.5 million nurses actually work

Hospitals employ 59 percent of registered nurses, ambulatory healthcare services 19 percent, nursing and residential care facilities 6 percent, government 5 percent and educational services 3 percent (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, registered nurses, May 2025).

The median annual wage varies with that setting: $110,780 in government, $100,220 in state, local and private hospitals, $91,230 in ambulatory healthcare services, $84,300 in nursing and residential care facilities and $78,620 in educational services, all as of May 2025 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, registered nurses, May 2025).

With about 180,800 openings projected each year on average over the 2025 to 2035 decade and hospital employment dominating the occupation, the demand travel contracts fill is overwhelmingly hospital demand. That is the argument for a facility-specific assignment table: bed count, unit size and system are what a hospital matches against, and generic language about adaptability matches nothing.

What salary you can expect as a travel nurse

This page does not publish travel contract rates, so you should be careful with anyone who does. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has no travel nursing profile, packages combine components set per contract and per location, and therefore a national figure quoted without a cycle or a source is a guess. What is published, and what a recruiter benchmarks against, is the registered nurse occupation: a median annual wage of $97,550 in May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent earning less than $68,940 and the highest 10 percent more than $137,470 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, registered nurses, May 2025).

Even so, what your resume genuinely controls is the structure of the contract an agency offers you, and structure is worth reading as closely as any number:

Contract terms travel nurses should read

  • Length and extension. Thirteen weeks is the common unit, but 8, 20 and 26 week contracts exist, and an extension offered mid-contract changes your year. A record of extensions is the strongest argument for a facility offering you one again.
  • Shift and guaranteed hours. Nights, days or rotating, and the hours written into the contract. Guaranteed hours are a contract term, not a courtesy.
  • Unit and ratio. What unit you are assigned to, at what ratio, and whether the facility may reassign you.
  • Float terms. Which units you can be floated to, how often, and whether float is to like units only. This is the term travelers most often misunderstand after arrival.
  • Cancellation. What happens if the facility cancels a shift or the contract, and with what notice. Read this before the start date, not in week three.
  • Credential currency. Every expired card is a delayed start, and a delayed start can cost a contract outright.

As a result, agencies offer the better-structured contracts first to a resume showing completed contracts, extensions, float willingness and a current compliance file, which is the part of this you can influence.

Key takeaways for a travel nurse resume

  1. Above all, build the experience section as an assignment table with six facts on every row.
  2. Say whether each contract ran to term and whether the facility extended you.
  3. Put license type, issuing state and status in the header, not at the bottom.
  4. Also separate multistate, single-state and in-progress licenses, because they are three facts.
  5. List the credential pack with expiry months, because paperwork delays starts.
  6. Then name the electronic record systems you have charted in, in production.
  7. Finally, say which units you float to, and how many float shifts you worked.

Travel nurse resume questions, answered

How long should a travel nurse resume be?

Two pages once you have more than about four completed contracts, which is normal here rather than a failure of editing. The assignment table is the document, and cutting it to one page removes the facts a manager is matching against.

Will a long list of short jobs look like instability?

Not when it is labeled. Put travel assignments in their own block, name the agency on each row, and say whether each contract ran to term. Eight completed 13-week contracts is a record of eight facilities that kept you the full term, but only if the page makes that legible.

Do I need a compact license to travel?

No, but it changes your speed. A multistate license issued by your primary state of residence lets you practice in all compact states, and NCSBN reports 43 jurisdictions currently in the Nurse Licensure Compact (NCSBN, nursecompact.com, read 16 September 2026). Outside the compact you apply to that state's board, so put in-progress applications on the page as in progress, never as active.

What certifications should a travel nurse keep current?

At minimum Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, plus Pediatric Advanced Life Support and any unit certification your target assignments require. Keep NIH Stroke Scale current if you work telemetry or step-down. What matters most is that all of them are in date on the day an offer arrives.

What goes on a travel nurse resume for a first contract?

Your staff experience, written as an assignment row: facility type and bed count, unit and bed count, your usual ratio, your shift and the electronic record. Then license status, the credential pack with expiry months, and the units you will float to. A first-time traveler with two solid years on one unit and a complete compliance file is a straightforward hire.

Should I put the agency name on my resume?

Yes, on each assignment row. It lets a manager verify the contract and explains the short dates without a paragraph of justification. Having worked through more than one agency is normal and worth showing, because it means you have been credentialed more than once.
