In short, an SLP resume is a one to two page document that names your state license, your certification status, and the caseload you could pick up on your first Monday.

In fact, speech-language pathology is one occupation with two hiring markets, and they read a resume differently. For example, a school district is staffing a caseload against eligibility law and an individualized education program calendar. Meanwhile, a hospital or skilled nursing facility is staffing a caseload against acuity, productivity and an instrumental swallow schedule. The same clinician can work in both, but only if the page says which parts of each they have actually done.

Resume guide for an SLP resume

Specifically, this guide and the corresponding SLP resume example will cover:

  • How to write an SLP resume, block by block
  • Licensure and certification, and why they are separate lines
  • Three adaptable summaries: clinical fellow, school SLP and medical SLP
  • Caseload mix, and how school practice and medical practice differ on one page
  • What Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows about pay, setting and growth

How to write an SLP resume

Six blocks: contact header, summary, licensure and certification, clinical experience with a caseload line, the caseload mix block, then skills and education. In general, use one page for a clinical fellow, then two once you carry a specialty caseload or supervise.

In practice, the order follows how a manager screens. License is a legal gate. First, certification status is a payer and reimbursement question. Caseload, on the other hand, is the operational question: what can you be handed on day one without a month of ramp-up.

SectionWhat it is answeringWhere it goes

  1. State licenseCan this person legally practice here today?Header and first block
  2. Certification statusFull certification, clinical fellow, or in progress?Same block, with dates
  3. Caseload lineWhat ages and what disorders, at what volume?First line of every job
  4. Setting detailSchool, acute, outpatient, skilled nursing, early intervention?Named, not implied
Expert tip

License and certification are two facts, not one

All states require that speech-language pathologists be licensed (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, speech-language pathologists, May 2025). That license is issued by a state and it is what makes your practice legal.

Certification through the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association is separate. The Certificate of Clinical Competence follows a supervised clinical practicum of at least 400 hours, of which at least 375 must be direct client or patient contact, with supervision never less than 25 percent of the student's total contact with each client, and then a Clinical Fellowship of at least 36 weeks and 1,260 hours (ASHA, asha.org, read 16 September 2026).

Write both as separate lines, each with its number and status. A manager reading a file that blurs them has to call and ask, and the file that requires a call gets read last.

Run the finished file through the ATS resume checker before you apply. Districts and health systems both parse applications into structured records before a clinician sees them.

Choosing the best resume format for an SLP resume

Reverse chronological, single column. Use one page as a clinical fellow, but two once you carry a specialty caseload, supervise fellows or students, or work across settings.

However, the one thing worth resisting is a format that hides settings. After all, a reader in a school district wants to see school time. Similarly, a rehabilitation director wants to see medical time. A functional format that groups your work by skill rather than by employer forces both of them to guess, and guessing costs you the interview.

If you have worked in both markets, keep the chronology and let the caseload lines do the explaining. Working across settings is an asset on either page, whereas hiding which was which is not.

First, put the license number on the page. Credentialing verifies it before an offer becomes real, and a file that lets them do it in ten seconds moves before one that does not.

Then put the certification status in the header too, including "Clinical Fellow" if that is what you are. It is not a weaker credential but a different one, and a manager who hires clinical fellows is looking for exactly that word.

Make use of a summary

In short, use four lines: setting and years, caseload mix by age and disorder, one specialty or instrumental skill, and your license and certification status.

Clinical fellow adaptable resume summary example

Speech-language pathology clinical fellow in a public school district, carrying 46 students across preschool through Grade 5 under the supervision of a certified mentor. Caseload is weighted toward speech sound disorders, expressive and receptive language, and three students using augmentative and alternative communication devices. Wrote or revised 31 individualized education program goal sets in the first year and held every annual review inside the district's compliance window. Nebraska provisional license active; Clinical Fellowship on track for completion in June.

Medical SLP adaptable resume summary example

Medical speech-language pathologist with eight years across acute care, inpatient rehabilitation and skilled nursing, currently carrying 11 to 13 patients a day at 88 percent productivity. Caseload is weighted toward dysphagia, aphasia, cognitive-communication after stroke and traumatic brain injury, and head and neck cancer, with about 140 modified barium swallow studies read alongside radiology each year. Lead the facility's dysphagia program and supervise two clinical fellows. Nebraska license and ASHA certification active.

Adaptable resume clinical experience example

Speech-Language Pathologist, Meadowlark Regional Medical Center, Lincoln, NE, July 2022 to Present

Acute care and inpatient rehabilitation. Caseload of 11 to 13 patients a day at 88 percent productivity, weighted toward dysphagia, aphasia, cognitive-communication after stroke and traumatic brain injury, and head and neck cancer.

Perform clinical swallow evaluations and read about 140 modified barium swallow studies a year alongside radiology, with diet and compensatory recommendations documented the same day.

Lead the facility dysphagia program: wrote the diet texture nomenclature rollout, trained 40 nursing staff, and chair the monthly aspiration review with nursing and the dietitian.

Supervise two clinical fellows and precept graduate students from two university programs.

Document to payer medical necessity criteria, with no documentation-related denials across the last two audit cycles.

Your caseload mix, and the setting that pays for it

This is the block that separates two otherwise identical SLP files. Both markets hire the same license, and neither one can tell from a generic resume whether you have done their version of the job.

Start with the caseload mix itself. Give four facts: the ages you have carried, the disorder categories weighted by how much of your time they took, the volume, and the modalities. "58 students, preschool through Grade 5, weighted toward speech sound disorders and developmental language disorder, with three AAC users and one fluency caseload" is a sentence a manager can staff against. "Treated a variety of communication disorders" is not.

Then name the setting, because the setting is the funding model. School practice and medical practice are the same profession organized by different rules, and the resume has to show which rules you have worked inside.

School practiceMedical practice
Eligibility determination under education law, not diagnosis aloneDiagnosis and skilled need documented against payer criteria
Individualized education program goals, annual reviews, triennial reevaluationsPlan of care, certification periods, functional outcome measures
Service minutes scheduled against a school calendarProductivity target, units, and length of stay
Medicaid billing for eligible students, with district documentation rulesCommercial, Medicare and Medicaid billing with medical necessity documentation
Caseload size and workload, often capped by state or districtDaily patient count and evaluation turnaround
Team is teachers, special education staff and familiesTeam is nursing, physicians, occupational and physical therapy, and dietary

Instrumental and specialty lines for medical SLPs

Then write the instrumental and specialty lines, which is where medical hiring is decided. Instrumental swallow assessment is the clearest example: say whether you have performed or interpreted modified barium swallow studies and endoscopic evaluations, whether you did so independently or alongside radiology, and roughly how many a year. Then the rest of the specialty list that applies to you: tracheostomy and ventilator-dependent patients, voice, head and neck cancer, cognitive-communication rehabilitation, augmentative and alternative communication device evaluation and programming, early intervention, bilingual assessment.

School compliance and documentation record

Then the compliance and documentation record, which is where school hiring is decided. A district is buying a clinician who will keep the district legal. Evaluation timelines met, annual reviews held in window, a backlog cleared, a caseload carried at a specific size, Medicaid documentation that survives audit. Those numbers are unglamorous and they are the ones a special education director actually remembers.

Then say honestly what you are prepared to take on. If you are a school SLP applying to a hospital, say what medical experience you hold, including graduate placements and any per diem work, and say plainly what you would need training on. Managers hire across the line constantly. They do not hire people who imply experience that turns out to be a single practicum rotation.

Adaptable resume caseload mix block example

Current caseload: 11 to 13 patients a day, acute care and inpatient rehabilitation, 88 percent productivity. Weighted toward dysphagia, aphasia, cognitive-communication after stroke and traumatic brain injury, and head and neck cancer.

Instrumental: About 140 modified barium swallow studies a year, read alongside radiology. Flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing: trained, performed under a supervising clinician.

Specialty: Tracheostomy and ventilator-dependent patients. Diet texture nomenclature implementation. Head and neck cancer rehabilitation, including pre-treatment counseling.

Prior school caseload: 58 students across two elementary buildings, preschool through Grade 5, speech sound disorders, developmental language disorder, fluency and three AAC users; 12 Medicaid-billable. 34 initial and triennial evaluations a year, all inside the district compliance window.

Bilingual: Evaluation and treatment in Spanish and English, including interpreter-supported assessment.

Five blocks, and both a special education director and a rehabilitation manager know exactly what they would be hiring.

Build a snapshot of your key skills

Twelve to sixteen entries in four groups: assessment, treatment, documentation and systems, then the setting-specific block. Also, only list an assessment you could administer and score tomorrow.

Adaptable resume skills example

Assessment: Clinical swallow evaluation, modified barium swallow study interpretation, standardized language and articulation batteries, dynamic assessment, cognitive-communication screening, AAC feature matching, bilingual and interpreter-supported assessment

Treatment: Dysphagia rehabilitation and compensatory strategies, aphasia therapy, cognitive-communication rehabilitation, speech sound disorder intervention, fluency treatment, AAC device programming and training, caregiver and family training

Documentation and systems: Epic, individualized education program writing, Medicaid billing documentation, payer medical necessity criteria, progress reporting, functional outcome measures

Program and supervision: Dysphagia program leadership, clinical fellow supervision, graduate student supervision, interdisciplinary rounds, staff in-service training

List your education and certifications

License first with its number and status, then certification, then the degree, then the specialty credentials. On this page, therefore, the degree is a given, since the typical entry-level education for the occupation is a master's degree (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025), and what differentiates you sits above and below it.

Adaptable resume education and credential example

Nebraska Speech-Language Pathology license #SLP-4471, active

Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology, American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, held since 2019

Master of Arts, Speech-Language Pathology, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Lincoln, NE, 2018. Medical and school placements; 412 supervised clinical practicum hours.

Clinical Fellowship completed 2019, 1,260 hours across a public school district under a certified mentor

Continuing education: dysphagia and instrumental assessment, AAC implementation, bilingual service delivery

Choose the right layout and design

Finally, keep a single column, 11 or 12 point, plain headings, no photograph. Health system and district application portals both parse your file into a structured record, and license numbers, certification dates and caseload lines are exactly what a two-column template loses.

Do

  • Put license number and certification status in the header as separate facts.
  • Open every job with a caseload line: ages, disorder weighting, volume, setting.
  • Say whether instrumental swallow studies were performed, interpreted or observed.
  • Give compliance numbers for school work and productivity numbers for medical work.
  • Name the documentation system.
  • Say what you would need training on if you are crossing settings.

Don’t

  • Do not write "treated a variety of communication disorders" where a caseload mix belongs.
  • Do not imply independent instrumental practice built on a single practicum rotation.
  • Do not list an assessment you could not administer and score tomorrow.
  • Do not describe an identifiable student or patient.
  • Do not leave your certification status ambiguous while a fellowship is in progress.

Expert tip

The largest employer pays the least, and that is the whole strategy

Educational services in state, local and private schools employ 39 percent of speech-language pathologists at a median annual wage of $83,120. Offices of physical, occupational and speech therapists and audiologists employ 25 percent at $98,910. Hospitals employ 13 percent at $103,690. Nursing and residential care facilities employ 5 percent at $109,660, and 5 percent are self-employed (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).

The pattern is the reverse of what you would expect. The setting with the most jobs has the lowest published median, and the setting with the fewest has the highest, a spread of more than $26,000 between schools and nursing and residential care.

That is why the caseload mix block matters. A resume that shows only school work is priced against the $83,120 line, whatever the clinician is capable of. A resume that shows dysphagia volume, instrumental assessment and productivity at a stated level is legible to the settings above it. Both markets are hiring; only one of them can read a generic page.

What salary you can expect as an SLP

Specifically, the median annual wage for speech-language pathologists was $97,870 a year, or $47.05 an hour, as of May 2025 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).

Setting is the largest published lever. Meanwhile, medians ran from $83,120 in educational services to $98,910 in offices of therapists, $103,690 in hospitals and $109,660 in nursing and residential care facilities in the same cycle (BLS, May 2025). Moving between those settings is a bigger single move than most people make through tenure, and it is decided by what a hiring manager can read on the page.

Growth supports that mobility. In addition, the occupation is projected to add 32,100 jobs between 2025 and 2035, a 17 percent increase, with about 12,500 openings a year (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025 to 2035 projections). That is a market where a clinician who can document a specific caseload has real choice.

Even so, what a resume moves beyond setting is narrower: an instrumental caseload with a volume attached, a specialty population, supervision of fellows or students, program leadership, a second language with assessment experience in it, and a documentation record that survives audit. Contract and per diem work adds a further band, though it usually trades benefits for rate, which is a calculation the resume cannot make for you.

Key takeaways for an SLP resume

  1. Above all, write license and certification as two separate lines, each with a number or a date.
  2. Open every job with a caseload line: ages, disorder weighting, volume, setting.
  3. Name the setting plainly, because the setting is the funding model.
  4. Say whether instrumental swallow studies were performed, interpreted or observed.
  5. Give compliance numbers for school work and productivity numbers for medical work.
  6. If you are crossing settings, name the gap and what you would need training on.
  7. Keep the file single column, since districts and health systems both parse before reading.
Pair it with a matching SLP cover letter.

SLP resume questions, answered

How long should an SLP resume be?

One page as a clinical fellow. Two once you carry a specialty caseload, supervise fellows or graduate students, lead a program, or have worked across school and medical settings and need the caseload lines to show both. Three is never right.

Should I write SLP or speech-language pathologist?

Both, once each. Use the full title in your header and the abbreviation in the summary, because a district posting and a health system posting use different conventions and parsing systems match literal strings. The same applies to CCC-SLP, which should appear at least once spelled out as the Certificate of Clinical Competence.

What do I put on a resume as a clinical fellow?

Write the fellowship as a job, because it is one. The setting, the caseload size, the ages, the disorder mix, the evaluations you completed, the documentation system, and your mentor's role. Then your practicum placements with hours and settings, your provisional license with its number, and an expected completion date for the fellowship. The ASHA Clinical Fellowship requires at least 36 weeks and 1,260 hours, with at least 80 percent of it in direct clinical contact (ASHA, read 16 September 2026), so a fellow finishing on schedule has a substantial clinical record to write about.

How do I move from schools to a medical setting?

Make the medical content visible and the gap explicit. List graduate medical placements with hours and populations, any per diem or contract work in acute care or skilled nursing, your dysphagia continuing education, and any instrumental exposure with its exact level, whether observed, performed under supervision or performed independently. Then say what you would want training on. Rehabilitation managers hire school clinicians regularly; what they will not do is hire someone whose page implied more.

Does bilingual ability belong on the page?

Yes, and be precise about what it means clinically. Conversational fluency, clinical proficiency and formal bilingual assessment are three different claims. Say which languages, whether you evaluate and treat in them or work through an interpreter, and whether you have used normed assessments in the language. It is one of the few lines on an SLP resume that can move a hiring decision on its own.
