In short, a psychotherapist resume is a one to two page clinical document that names your license, the examination behind it, the supervised hours you completed to earn it, and the payer panels you can bill on.
It has to name those things because, in fact, "psychotherapist" is not one of them. After all, no state board issues a psychotherapist license. The word describes what you do in the room; underneath it sits one of four separate professions, each with its own board, examination and supervised-hours bar, and its own answer to the question a clinic director is really asking, which is what a payer will reimburse when you see a patient.

How to write a psychotherapist resume
Overall, it takes six blocks: contact header, summary, licensure and credentials, clinical experience, modalities and populations, and education. One page while accruing hours, two once you supervise, carry a specialist caseload, or hold more than one state license.
Licensure sits directly under the summary because it is a gate and a billing question at once. A practice cannot schedule you until it knows which board licensed you, and cannot bill for you until it knows which panels credential that license.
BlockThe question it answersWhere it goes
- License and credentialWhich board, which number, what status?Directly under the summary
- Supervised hoursAre you independently licensed, or still accruing? In the licensure block, with the count
- Panels and billingCan this practice bill for your sessions from week one?Its own two-line block
- Clinical experienceWhat caseload did you carry, and at what no-show rate?Reverse chronological, with numbers
Write the license, then the title, in that order
A job advertisement for a psychotherapist is almost always written by someone who will accept more than one license. It will say "LPC, LMFT or LCSW" or "master's level licensed clinician". Your resume answers which one immediately, because the rest of the intake process forks on that answer.
Put it in the header as a credential string: "Marit Sandvik, LPC, NCC", then repeat it in full in the licensure block with the board name, the number and the status.
If you are still accruing hours, say so with the number, not the word "pending". A director can plan around "1,840 of 3,000 postgraduate hours accrued, supervision weekly". Nobody can plan around "license pending".
Run the finished file through the ATS resume checker before you submit. Group practices and hospital systems parse these into a credentialing record before a human reads them.
Choosing the best resume format for a psychotherapist resume
Reverse chronological, single column. One page while prelicensed, two once you supervise or hold multiple licenses.
A functional format is a bad idea here because supervised hours are counted against calendar time. A reader needs start and end dates on every clinical post to work out whether your hours add up. Hiding the timeline reads as hiding a lapse, even when there is none.
Include your contact information
First, put the license number on the page. State boards and NBCC both run public verification, and an analyst who can confirm you without emailing first will move your file the same day.
Make use of a summary
Four lines: license and board, years and setting, caseload with a number, and the modalities you are trained in rather than interested in.

Right vs wrong: the same psychotherapist summary, twice
For example, the left column tells a practice manager which panels to submit and what revenue to expect. By contrast, the right could describe anyone in the building.
Outline your clinical experience
Employer, setting type, city, dates, then the shape of the caseload: weekly sessions, population, presenting concerns, format, and whether the work was billable. In each role, write three to five bullets, each with a number.

Adaptable resume employment history example
Licensed Professional Counselor, Isthmus Counseling Collective, Madison, WI, September 2020 to Present
Carry 26 to 28 billable individual sessions a week with adults, mainly anxiety, depression, adjustment and post-traumatic presentations, in a twelve-clinician outpatient group practice.
Run a weekly dialectical behavior therapy skills group of 8 to 10 members across two 24-week cycles a year, including the between-session coaching protocol.
Built a reminder and re-engagement routine that took the practice no-show rate from 19 percent to 7 percent over four quarters, worth roughly 340 recovered sessions a year.
Credentialed on six commercial panels plus Wisconsin Medicaid, CAQH profile attested on schedule since 2020 with no lapse.
Supervise two counselors in training toward Wisconsin licensure, weekly individual supervision with documented hours.
Which of the four licenses sits under your job title, and what each one opens
In practice, this is the section that decides these files, and most psychotherapist resumes skip it by writing "licensed therapist" and hoping the reader fills in the rest.
They will not. Instead, underneath the title sit four distinct licenses, regulated by four different national bodies, and the difference is not academic. It decides which panels credential you, which populations you can be assigned, whether you can supervise, and in most states whether you can use a protected title at all. Wisconsin illustrates the split: three of the four routes are regulated by a single body, the Marriage and Family Therapy, Professional Counseling and Social Work Examining Board, while psychologists are licensed by a separate board entirely.
The psychologist route. Doctoral level, regulated at national level by the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards, which publishes the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology in two parts, EPPP Part 1-Knowledge and EPPP Part 2-Skills (ASPPB). It carries standardized psychological testing and diagnostic determinations with legal or educational weight, and has the most developed mobility mechanism: PSYPACT, the Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact, which ASPPB describes as created "to facilitate telehealth and temporary in-person, face-to-face practice of psychology across jurisdictional boundaries", now lists 50 states and jurisdictions as having enacted legislation, with 49 effective and participating (PSYPACT, retrieved 16 September 2026).
The counselor route. Master's level, and the largest of the four by employment. The National Board for Certified Counselors states that it "administers the licensure examinations used by all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Guam", and that a state "may specifically require the National Counselor Examination (NCE) or the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE)", with some requiring both or letting the candidate choose (NBCC). The NCE is "a 200-item multiple-choice examination" assessing the knowledge and skills "important for providing effective counseling services" (NBCC). Say which one you passed and in which year, because the two are not interchangeable across state lines.
In addition, the voluntary national credential on this route is the National Certified Counselor. NBCC requires a master's, education specialist, certificate of advanced study or doctoral degree in counseling, graduate coursework of at least 48 semester hours across nine content areas, "at least 3,000 hours of postgraduate counseling work experience over a minimum 24-month period", "at least 100 hours of postgraduate counseling supervision over a minimum 24-month period", and a passing NCE or NCMHCE score (NBCC). If you hold it, put NCC after your name.
Counselor state titles and the compact
The state title varies, and the variation matters. The Counseling Compact, whose privilege to practice is live for licensees in Arkansas, Arizona, Georgia, Indiana, Louisiana, Minnesota, Ohio, Tennessee and Wyoming, names a different qualifying license across them: Licensed Professional Counselor in five, Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Indiana, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor in Minnesota and Ohio, and Licensed Professional Counselor with a Mental Health Service Provider designation in Tennessee (Counseling Compact). For this reason, write your state's exact title, not a generic one.
The marriage and family therapy route. Master's level, with its own national examination. The Association of Marriage and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards describes itself as "the association of state licensing boards governing the regulation of LMFTs", publishes that each form of the MFT National Examination "contains 180 items" with four hours to complete it, and states that nearly all states require it for LMFT licensure, with California administering its own (AMFTRB). BLS adds that all states require licensure and that it takes "a master's degree plus a state-specified number of hours of postdegree supervised clinical experience" (BLS, Occupational Outlook Handbook). This is the route that opens relational and systemic work: couples, families and the presenting problem read as a system. If you hold it, name the systemic models you were trained in rather than listing individual modalities, because that is what a reader is hiring the license for.
The clinical social work route. Master's level, examined by the Association of Social Work Boards, which publishes four exam categories: Bachelors, Masters, Advanced Generalist and Clinical. ASWB describes the Clinical category as being for "individuals who have an MSW" with "two years (or commensurate experience as defined by the jurisdiction) of experience in clinical settings", and Advanced Generalist as the same degree with two years in non-clinical settings (ASWB). BLS states that "clinical social workers need a master's degree, supervised clinical experience, and a license from the state in which they practice". This is the broadest of the four in setting, which is why it dominates hospital, hospice and integrated care postings. The Social Work Licensure Compact has now been enacted in 35 states, though the commission notes multistate licenses are not yet being issued (Social Work Licensure Compact, July 2026).
Then the part that turns a license into revenue: payer panel credentialing. Being licensed is not the same as being in network. In network means a specific payer has credentialed your specific license, at your practice location, under a specific tax identification number, with an effective date on file.
CAQH and payer panel credentialing
The shared machinery behind that is CAQH, whose provider data service reports 7.4 million provider records and about 1,000 participating health plans and other entities (DataSpring, powered by CAQH). Payers pull from it on a cycle: UnitedHealthcare, for example, publishes that "providers contracted with UnitedHealthcare must ensure their demographic data is updated every 90 days" and names the CAQH Provider Data Portal as "a multi-payer solution, so any updates and attestations you make are available to all payers you've authorized" (UnitedHealthcare). A clinician whose attestation has lapsed is one whose claims are about to be denied, so a line saying yours never has is a real differentiator.
Adaptable resume licensure and panel block example
License: Licensed Professional Counselor, Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services #LPC-4471, active through 2028, no disciplinary history.
Credential: National Certified Counselor, NBCC #NCC-338902, since 2020. National Counselor Examination passed 2019.
Prelicensure: 3,000 postgraduate counseling hours completed 2018 to 2020, with 120 hours of individual supervision.
Panels: Six commercial payers and Wisconsin Medicaid. CAQH profile attested on schedule since 2020, no lapse. NPI and malpractice coverage current.
Supervision: Approved to supervise counselors in training in Wisconsin; two supervisees.
In short, five short blocks, and a practice manager can cost you out without sending a single email.
Build a snapshot of your key skills
For skills, list twelve to sixteen entries in four groups. Also, be honest about the difference between trained, supervised and certified.
Adaptable resume skills example
Modalities: Cognitive behavioral therapy, Dialectical behavior therapy skills groups, EMDR to completion of basic training, Motivational interviewing, Acceptance and commitment therapy
Assessment: PHQ-9, GAD-7, PCL-5, AUDIT and DAST, Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale, Treatment planning to medical necessity criteria
Populations: Adults 18 to 64, Anxiety and depressive disorders, Post-traumatic presentations, Substance use co-occurrence, Adjustment after medical diagnosis
Practice and systems: SimplePractice and TherapyNotes, CAQH profile management, Payer authorization and concurrent review, Clinical supervision, Safety planning documentation
List your education and licensure
License first with board and number, then national credential, then degree with accreditation and semester hours, then training certificates with dates.
Adaptable resume education and licensure example
Licensed Professional Counselor, Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services, #LPC-4471, active.
National Certified Counselor, National Board for Certified Counselors, #NCC-338902, 2020. NCE passed 2019.
Master of Science, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Whitewater, WI, 2018. CACREP accredited program, 60 semester hours, 700-hour internship.
Bachelor of Arts, Psychology, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, WI, 2015.
Training: EMDR basic training, EMDR International Association approved, 2022. DBT intensive training, 2021. Approved clinical supervisor designation, 2023.
Choose the right layout and design
For layout, use a single column, 11 or 12 point, no photograph, no skills bars. That is because credentialing platforms parse this into a structured provider record, and graphics are where the parse fails.
Do
- Put the license abbreviation after your name, and the board, number and status in the licensure block.
- Say which national examination you passed and when.
- Give supervised hours as a number against the requirement while accruing them.
- List the payer panels you are credentialed on.
- Distinguish trained, supervised and certified when naming a modality.
- Give one caseload figure per role.
Don’t
- Do not write "licensed therapist" without naming the license; readers guess, and most guess low.
- Do not write "license pending" without the hour count behind it.
- Do not claim a weekend workshop as a competency.
- Do not name, initial or describe an individual client, even indirectly.
- Do not pad with theoretical orientation statements; the interview is where those belong.
Psychotherapist job market and outlook
The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes no Occupational Outlook Handbook profile for psychotherapists, because it is not an occupation in the federal classification. It is a job title applied to four published occupations, so this page quotes no psychotherapist figure and gives those four separately, naming the license each belongs to.
| Published occupation, and the license it maps to | Jobs, 2025 | Projected change, 2025-35 | Annual openings | Median annual wage, May 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Substance abuse, behavioral disorder and mental health counselors (LPC, LPCC, LMHC) | 18% (+98,000) | About 50,500 | ||
| Marriage and family therapists (LMFT) | 14% (+10,300) | About 6,900 | ||
| Social workers, all specialties (LCSW and others) | 6% | About 69,100 | ||
| Psychologists, all specialties (licensed psychologist) | 6% | About 11,300 |
Growth and pay point in different directions
The fastest-growing of the four routes is the lowest paid. Substance abuse, behavioral disorder and mental health counselors are projected to grow 18 percent between 2025 and 2035 with about 50,500 openings a year, at a May 2025 median of $59,350. Psychologists, at a median of $99,110, are projected to grow 6 percent with about 11,300 openings a year (BLS, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections and May 2025).
That divergence is what makes the license block the most valuable part of this resume. Openings on the counselor route are plentiful but sit roughly $40,000 below the doctoral route at the median, and a master's-level clinician moves up inside their own band by panel breadth, supervision authority, a specialist caseload and a documented no-show rate. Each is a line on a resume, and none is a credential.
Setting differs by route too. For example, among substance abuse, behavioral disorder and mental health counselors, 20 percent worked in offices of other health practitioners at a median of $58,240 and 16 percent in outpatient mental health and substance abuse centers at $58,750 (BLS, May 2025). Similarly, among marriage and family therapists, 33 percent worked in offices of other health practitioners at $64,430, 10 percent in outpatient care centers at $75,560 and 6 percent in state government at $92,150 (BLS, May 2025).
What salary you can expect as a psychotherapist
There is no psychotherapist wage to quote, so read your number off the route you are licensed on.
First, on the counseling route, the median for substance abuse, behavioral disorder and mental health counselors was $59,350 a year, or $28.53 an hour, as of May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent under $38,940 and the highest 10 percent above $97,590. Meanwhile, on the marriage and family therapy route the median was $66,940, or $32.18 an hour, with the lowest 10 percent under $44,650 and the highest above $123,730 (BLS, May 2025).
The social work route splits by specialty rather than sitting at one number: healthcare social workers had a median of $67,880 as of May 2025, all other social workers $71,900, mental health and substance abuse social workers $60,280 and child, family and school social workers $59,550, against an overall median of $61,780 (BLS, May 2025). The psychologist route sits above all of them, at $99,110 across all psychologists and $100,580 for clinical and counseling psychologists (BLS, May 2025).
However, within a route, three things move the number and all three are resume material. Panel breadth, because a clinician credentialed on eight payers fills to capacity from day one and one credentialed on two does not. Another is supervision authority, since a practice that can bill prelicensed clinicians' sessions under your name is buying more than your own hours. Finally, reliable utilization: a documented no-show rate and a documented wait time convert into revenue without guesswork.
Key takeaways for a psychotherapist resume
- Above all, name the license, not the job title; "psychotherapist" is not a credential anyone can verify.
- Then put board, number and status in the licensure block, with the national examination and its year.
- While prelicensed, give hours accrued against hours required, plus supervision frequency.
- Also, list the payer panels you hold and say your CAQH attestation has not lapsed.
- Separate trained, supervised and certified when you name a modality.
- In addition, give one caseload number per role: weekly sessions, group size, no-show rate.
- Finally, read your salary expectation off your own route; the four differ by up to $40,000 at the median.

Psychotherapist resume questions, answered
Is psychotherapist a protected title?
No. It describes the work rather than the credential, and no board issues a psychotherapist license. The protected titles are the ones underneath it, which is why a resume that says "licensed therapist" without naming the board and number gives a credentialing office nothing to verify.
Which license should I put first if I hold more than one?
The one the post is credentialing for, then the others with their boards and numbers. Holding both an LCSW and an LMFT is worth more than either alone, but only if both appear with jurisdictions attached, because panels credential per license per state.
What do I write while I am still accruing supervised hours?
The count against the requirement, the supervision arrangement, and the examination status. NBCC's National Certified Counselor credential, for instance, requires "at least 3,000 hours of postgraduate counseling work experience over a minimum 24-month period" and "at least 100 hours of postgraduate counseling supervision" over the same minimum period (NBCC). A number against that bar tells a director your billable date. The word "pending" does not.
Should payer panels really go on a clinical resume?
Yes, in two lines. In network status is the difference between filling a schedule in week one and waiting ninety days for effective dates. Name the panels, say whether your CAQH profile has ever lapsed, and note that your NPI and malpractice coverage are current.
How do I show results without describing a client?
Use the practice-level numbers you own: weekly billable sessions, group size and cycle length, no-show and cancellation rates with a before and after, wait time from first contact to first appointment, documentation compliance in payer audits, and supervisees carried. Every one of those is evidence, and none of them is about an identifiable person.
