In short, a psychologist resume is a one to two page document that states where you sit in the licensure pipeline, names the jurisdictions whose boards hold your file, and shows the assessment and treatment work you are legally allowed to sign.
In fact, most rejections in this occupation happen at the first screen, and most of them are licensure questions the resume did not answer. The person reading it is holding a credentialing packet and a payer contract, and needs to know whether you can be credentialed this quarter, supervised this quarter, or neither. For example, a file that says "doctoral-level mental health professional" forces them to guess, and guessing takes longer than moving to the next one.
Resume guide for a psychologist resume
To help, this guide and the corresponding psychologist resume example will cover:
- How to write a psychologist resume, section by section
- How to write license status so a credentialing office can read it in four seconds
- Three adaptable summaries: postdoctoral fellow, licensed psychologist and director
- What the EPPP, your supervised hours and your state list are worth on the page
- What the job market looks like and what you can expect to earn
How to write a psychologist resume
Overall, it takes seven sections: contact header, licensure block, summary, clinical experience, assessment and intervention competencies, education and training, certifications. One page while you are in training, two once you carry a caseload, a supervision load and a testing battery worth naming.
The licensure block sits above experience because it is a gate rather than an achievement. A director who cannot bill for your hours cannot hire you, however strong the rest reads.
SectionWhat it is answeringWhere it goes
- Licensure blockCan this person be credentialed, and in which states?Directly under the contact header
- SummaryWhat population, what modality, what setting?Four lines under the licensure block
- Clinical experienceWhat did their caseload look like and what changed?Reverse chronological, with numbers
- Assessment competenciesWhich instruments can they administer and interpret?Named list, not "psychological testing"
- Education and trainingWas the doctorate and internship accredited?Program, accreditation, year
Log your supervised hours as you go, then put the running total on the page
The ASPPB Model Act requires an applicant to "possess a doctoral degree from a psychology training program", and the matching Model Regulations set the experience bar at "two (2) years of supervised experience, at least one (1) of which shall have been completed after receipt of the doctoral degree, for a minimum of 3,000 total hours" (ASPPB, March 2018).
The regulations also fix the supervision: each year must run at least 1,500 hours of professional service, with "a minimum of two (2) hours per week of supervision, one (1) hour of which is individual face-to-face, in-person supervision by a licensed psychologist", and no more than 45 hours a week may be credited.
States vary in what they adopt, so the number on your page has to be the one your board will accept. Write the running total: "1,720 postdoctoral hours accrued of 1,500 required, supervision by a licensed psychologist at two hours weekly". A hiring director can plan around that sentence. They cannot plan around "completing postdoctoral requirements".
Run the finished file through the ATS resume checker before you submit. Health systems parse applications into an applicant tracking system before a human opens them, and a license line inside a text box does not survive that.
Choosing the best resume format for a psychologist resume
Reverse chronological. As for length, use one page through the doctorate, internship and postdoctoral year. Then move to two pages once you supervise, carry a testing caseload, or run a program.
Functional formats fail here because the occupation is regulated by time. Boards verify hours by date range and supervisor, so a format that hides the dates makes a credentialing office do reconstruction work and reads like a gap somebody is hiding.
By contrast, the academic CV is a separate document. Send the CV to faculty posts. Send a resume of two pages at most to a clinic, hospital, group practice, school district or correctional system, with the publication list reduced to one line and a count.
Include your contact information
Put the license number on the page. Credentialing verifies it whatever you do, and a file that lets them start on the day it arrives moves faster than one that makes them write to you first.
Also, "board certified" on its own is the most common error in this occupation's resumes. Specifically, it means an American Board of Professional Psychology specialty board. If you hold one, name it. If you do not, however, write "licensed", which is the claim credentialing cares about.
Make use of a summary
First, write four lines: license status, the population and setting, the modalities or instruments you work in, and one outcome with a number attached.

Right vs wrong: the same psychologist summary, twice
As a result, the right column can be credentialed, scheduled and budgeted. The wrong column cannot, and the person reading at the end of a clinic day is doing all three.
Outline your experience
Setting, role, city, dates, then three to five bullets. Every bullet carries a population, a caseload figure or a turnaround figure, and names what you did rather than what the service offers.

Adaptable resume employment history example
Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Laurelhurst Psychological Services, Portland, OR, September 2019 to Present
Carry a caseload of 26 weekly adult outpatients in anxiety, post-traumatic stress and comorbid chronic pain, and 6 assessment referrals a month.
Practice in cognitive behavioral therapy, prolonged exposure and acceptance and commitment therapy, with measurement-based care using the PHQ-9, GAD-7 and PCL-5 at intake, week 6 and discharge.
Reduced the practice's assessment report turnaround from 31 days to 12 by moving scoring in-house and requiring a written referral question before the battery is selected.
Supervise two postdoctoral fellows accruing hours for Oregon licensure, two hours weekly each with one hour of individual face-to-face supervision.
Run a monthly consultation group for four primary care physicians on stepped-care management of anxiety presentations.
Write your license status, not just your degree
This block decides whether your file is read, and it is almost always written wrongly. A doctorate is not a license. In other words, a license is not a specialty board. Similarly, supervised hours are neither, and a resume that blurs them makes a credentialing office assume the weakest reading.
In practice, there are three stages, each with its own correct sentence.
Postdoctoral fellow, or license-eligible. You hold the doctorate, you have finished the internship, and you are accruing the postdoctoral hours your board requires. Name the degree, the accreditation, the hours accrued against the hours required, and who supervises them: "License-eligible in Oregon; 1,720 postdoctoral hours accrued against the 1,500 required, supervised by a licensed psychologist at two hours weekly including one hour individual face-to-face." Never write "pending licensure" without the number, because the number is what tells a director when you become billable.
Licensed psychologist. You hold a current license from a named board. Write the jurisdiction, the number and the status. "Licensed Psychologist, Oregon Board of Psychology #OR-3184, active." If you hold more than one, list all of them with their numbers, because a multi-state group practice is reading for exactly that.
Specialty board certified. This is the American Board of Professional Psychology and its member boards, separate from and later than licensure. Name the board and the year, or do not use the phrase.
The EPPP and your state list
The examination sits between the first and second stage. The Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards publishes the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology in two parts: Part 1-Knowledge, covering "general knowledge of psychology, intervention, and assessment", and Part 2-Skills, covering "application of the knowledge tested in EPPP (Part 1-Knowledge) to decision-making in typical situations of real-world, independent practice". For example, ASPPB states that "the recommended passing score for EPPP (Part 1-Knowledge) is 500", and the same for Part 2. Not every jurisdiction requires Part 2, so write which part you passed and in which year, not "passed the EPPP".
Then the state list. After all, a resume that says "licensed psychologist" without naming a jurisdiction has answered nothing. Instead, list every board that holds an active license for you, with its number, and say whether you hold the ASPPB E.Passport, which ASPPB describes as "a preliminary step to obtaining the Authorization to Practice Interjurisdictional Telepsychology (APIT) issued by the Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact (PSYPACT) Commission". To a practice running a telehealth panel across several states, that line is worth more than another modality.
The psychologist scope line others cannot copy
Last, the scope line, and it is the one thing on this page a master's-level therapist cannot copy. The ASPPB Model Act defines the practice of psychology as "the observation, description, evaluation, interpretation, prediction and modification of human behavior by the application of psychological principles, methods, and procedures", and lists within it "psychological testing and the evaluation or assessment of personal characteristics, such as intelligence; personality; cognitive, physical, and/or emotional abilities" alongside "diagnosis, treatment, and management of mental and emotional disorder or disability" (ASPPB Model Act, March 2018). The Model Act also restricts the title itself: it provides that "the title 'Psychologist' may not be used by professionals who are exempt from licensure under this act except as permitted", and the Occupational Outlook Handbook notes that most states require licensure to provide psychology services or to use the title (BLS, Occupational Outlook Handbook).
In short, that is where a psychologist's market value sits. By contrast, a licensed counselor or clinical social worker delivers psychotherapy, often very well. Standardized testing, the integrated report it produces, and diagnostic determinations carrying legal or educational weight are the work a doctoral-level psychologist is hired to sign. Name the instruments, not the category.
Adaptable resume licensure and scope block example
Licensed Psychologist, Oregon Board of Psychology #OR-3184, active through 2028. Licensed Psychologist, Washington State Department of Health, active. ASPPB E.Passport holder.
EPPP Part 1 Knowledge passed 2018; EPPP Part 2 Skills passed 2019. Doctoral program and internship both APA-accredited.
Postdoctoral supervised experience: 1,720 hours, 2017 to 2018, supervised weekly by a licensed psychologist.
Assessment performed: WAIS-IV, WMS-IV, MMPI-3, PAI, ADOS-2, SCID-5, and integrated psychodiagnostic reporting for medical, educational and disability determinations.
Overall, that makes four separate claims, with no room to confuse them. As a result, a credentialing office can open a verification portal from that block without emailing you once.
Build a snapshot of your key skills
For skills, list twelve to sixteen entries in four groups: assessment instruments, modalities, practice competencies and the systems the employer runs. Also, name instruments individually. "Psychological testing" is invisible; "WAIS-IV, MMPI-3, PAI, ADOS-2" is a referral you can be handed.
Adaptable resume skills example
Assessment: WAIS-IV, WMS-IV, MMPI-3, PAI, ADOS-2, SCID-5, Conners 4, integrated psychodiagnostic report writing
Intervention: Cognitive behavioral therapy, Prolonged exposure, Acceptance and commitment therapy, Cognitive processing therapy, Behavioral activation, Motivational interviewing
Practice: Measurement-based care with PHQ-9, GAD-7 and PCL-5, Risk assessment and safety planning, Integrated primary care consultation, Clinical supervision of postdoctoral fellows
Systems: Epic and its behavioral health module, Q-global and Q-interactive scoring platforms, telehealth delivery under an E.Passport, HIPAA-compliant documentation
List your education and certifications
Doctorate first with the program and its accreditation, then internship, then postdoctoral fellowship, then certifications. Many public sector employers and most hospital training programs require an APA-accredited doctorate and internship, so a file that leaves the word out invites the question.
Adaptable resume education and training example
Doctor of Philosophy, Clinical Psychology, University of Oregon, Eugene, OR, 2017. APA-accredited program.
Predoctoral Internship, Clinical Psychology, Cascade Regional Health System, Eugene, OR, 2016 to 2017. APA-accredited internship, matched through the APPIC Match.
Postdoctoral Fellowship, Adult Outpatient Psychology, Willamette Crossing Behavioral Health, Portland, OR, 2017 to 2018. 1,720 supervised hours.
Bachelor of Arts, Psychology, Portland State University, Portland, OR, 2011
Certifications: Prolonged Exposure therapy training (2020). Cognitive Processing Therapy provider training (2022). ASPPB E.Passport (2023).
Choose the right layout and design
Single column, 11 or 12 point, section headings a parser can find, no photograph, no skills bar chart. Health system applicant systems read these into a structured record before anybody opens the file, and the license line is the one you least want lost in a graphic.
Do
- Put the license jurisdiction, number and status in the first block.
- State hours accrued against hours required while you are pre-licensure.
- Name every assessment instrument you can administer and interpret.
- Give a caseload number and a turnaround number.
- List every state license you hold, with its number.
- Say whether the doctorate and the internship were accredited.
Don’t
- Do not write "board certified" unless you hold a specialty board.
- Do not write "pending licensure" without the hours figure behind it.
- Do not send an academic CV to a clinical post.
- Do not write "psychological testing" as a skill without naming the instruments.
- Do not list a lapsed license without saying it has lapsed, because a credentialing office will find it and the surprise costs you more than the gap.
Psychologist job market and outlook
A growing occupation with tight training capacity: the bottleneck sits in the licensure pipeline rather than in demand.
| Measure | Value |
|---|---|
| Psychologist jobs, 2025 | 209,400 |
| Projected change, 2025-35 | 6% (faster than the average for all occupations) |
| Projected annual openings | About 11,300 |
| Typical entry-level education | Master's or doctoral degree in psychology |
| Median annual wage, May 2025 | $99,110, or $47.65 per hour |
The training bottleneck, in one set of numbers
The internship is the choke point of this occupation, and it is measurable. In the 2026 APPIC Match, 4,662 applicants registered, 4,480 submitted rankings, 3,996 positions were available and 3,919 applicants matched, an 87 percent match rate, with 59 positions remaining unfilled after Phase II (Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers, 2026 Match statistics).
Set that beside the Occupational Outlook Handbook figure of about 11,300 psychologist openings a year over the 2025 to 2035 decade (BLS, 2025-35 projections). Roughly four thousand people clear the internship gate each year against eleven thousand openings, and each still has a postdoctoral year ahead.
So being unambiguously through the pipeline is itself an advantage. Write the accreditation, the match, the hours and the license number, because much of the applicant pool cannot.
For reference, here is where the jobs sit, and what each setting pays:
| Setting or specialty | Median annual wage (May 2025) |
|---|---|
| Industrial-organizational psychologists | |
| Government, excluding state and local education and hospitals | |
| Psychologists, all other | |
| Clinical and counseling psychologists | |
| Ambulatory healthcare services | |
| Hospitals; state, local, and private | |
| School psychologists | |
| Elementary and secondary schools; local |
What salary you can expect as a psychologist
On pay, the median annual wage for psychologists was $99,110 as of May 2025, or $47.65 an hour. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $59,080 and the highest 10 percent more than $163,380 (BLS, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).
The spread is mostly specialty and sector rather than seniority. Clinical and counseling psychologists had a median of $100,580 and school psychologists $95,990, while industrial-organizational psychologists sat at $193,950 (BLS, May 2025). Meanwhile, non-education government work paid a median of $130,960, against $96,850 in hospitals and $95,230 in local elementary and secondary schools (BLS, May 2025).
Within a setting, the levers a resume can pull are narrow. In practice, assessment capacity is the first: a psychologist who can run and sign a full battery generates revenue a therapy-only clinician does not. Supervision eligibility is the second, since a practice growing through postdoctoral fellows needs someone whose years post-licensure qualify them to supervise. Multi-state licensure is the third, especially for telehealth panels, and a specialty board is the fourth. Each is a documented fact rather than a soft claim, which is why they belong on the page rather than in the interview.
Key takeaways for a psychologist resume
- First, lead with license jurisdiction, number and status; it is the gate, not an achievement.
- Then, pre-licensure, write hours accrued against hours required and name your supervision.
- Say which part of the EPPP you passed and when.
- Also, name every assessment instrument individually; the category word is invisible.
- List every state license you hold, plus the E.Passport if you have one.
- Finally, use "board certified" only for an American Board of Professional Psychology board.
- Give caseload and turnaround numbers, and keep the file to two pages.

Psychologist resume questions, answered
How long should a psychologist resume be?
One page through the doctorate, internship and postdoctoral year. Two pages once you carry a caseload, supervise, or run a program. The academic CV is a different document; send it to faculty posts only.
How do I write license status if I am not licensed yet?
Name the jurisdiction, the hours accrued against the hours required, and who supervises them. The ASPPB Model Regulations set the benchmark at a minimum of 3,000 total hours, including a postdoctoral year of at least 1,500 hours and two hours of supervision weekly (ASPPB, March 2018); states adapt it, so use your own board's figure. A number gives a hiring director a date; "pending licensure" does not.
What can a licensed psychologist do that a master's-level therapist cannot?
The ASPPB Model Act places psychological testing and the assessment of intelligence, personality and cognitive ability inside the defined practice of psychology, alongside diagnosis, and restricts use of the title itself (ASPPB Model Act, March 2018). Master's-level clinicians deliver psychotherapy under their own licenses; standardized testing, the integrated report and diagnostic determinations carrying legal or educational weight are what a doctoral-level psychologist signs.
Should I list the assessment instruments individually?
Yes. A referral coordinator matching a waiting list to a clinician looks for named instruments. WAIS-IV, MMPI-3, PAI, ADOS-2 and SCID-5 put you on specific referral lists. "Psychological testing" puts you on none of them.
Does the APPIC Match belong on a resume?
Name the internship, its accreditation and the fact that it was matched. In the 2026 Match, 4,662 applicants registered and 3,919 matched, 87 percent (APPIC, 2026 Match statistics), so a matched APA-accredited internship is a filter many files cannot show.
How do I show outcomes when my work is confidential?
Describe the caseload and the system, never the person. Caseload size and composition by presenting problem, measurement-based care instruments and the aggregate change on them, assessment volume, report turnaround, waiting list length, supervision hours provided, and the number of fellows carried to licensure. All countable, none identifying.
