Sales Representative, Medical and Surgical Camille Boudreaux
Territory Sales Representative, Surgical Supply
[email protected] | (919) 555-1126 | Raleigh, United States
Profile
Sales representative moving into pharmaceutical sales from three years in surgical supply, where I carried a 62-account territory in eastern North Carolina and finished at 109% and 116% of quota in my last two years. Bachelor of Science in biology with coursework in physiology and biochemistry, and two years of hospital-facing selling, so I am already credentialed through symplr and used to working inside facility access rules. Looking for a primary care territory where the product is early enough in its cycle that share of voice still moves it.

Summary
A pharmaceutical sales representative resume is a one to two page document built on quota attainment, territory rank and the product portfolio you have carried. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the access and compliance facts that separate pharmaceutical selling from every other kind, the reason this is not a licensed occupation, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook for technical and scientific sales.
Pharmaceutical Sales Representative resume examples by experience level
A pharmaceutical sales representative resume is a one to two page document that answers three questions with numbers: what percentage of quota you hit, where your territory ranked against the rest of the country, and what you were selling while you did it.
In short, everything else on the page is context for those three. This is not selling in general. It is selling a regulated product to prescribers who are hard to reach, inside a compliance frame that governs what you may buy them, what gets published about every dollar you spend, and whether you are allowed through a hospital door at all. Specifically, a hiring manager is reading for evidence that you produced numbers under those constraints without creating a compliance problem.
Resume guide for a pharmaceutical sales representative resume
To help, this guide and the corresponding pharmaceutical sales representative resume example will cover:
- How to write a pharmaceutical sales representative resume, section by section
- The three numbers the page is actually read for, and how to write them honestly
- Three adaptable summaries: first territory, quota-carrying representative and key account
- What vendor credentialing, the PhRMA Code and Open Payments mean for your file
- What the job market looks like and what you can expect to earn
How to write a pharmaceutical sales representative resume
Overall, it takes six blocks: contact header, summary, a performance snapshot, territory and portfolio history, education, and skills. As for length, use one page for your first two territories, two once you have several product cycles and a rank history worth reading.
In practice, the performance snapshot is the block that does the work. It sits immediately under the summary and holds quota attainment and rank by year, so a reader does not have to hunt through bullets for them.
| Section | What it is answering | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Performance snapshot | Did this person make their number, and how often? | Directly under the summary |
| Territory and portfolio | What did they sell, to whom, and at what launch stage? | Each role, before the bullets |
| Education | Do they have the science background the role assumes? | Standard placement, near the end |
Write the denominator, not just the percentage
"Achieved 142% of quota" is a claim a reader cannot evaluate. A 142% year on a territory whose quota was reset downward after a formulary loss is a different achievement from 112% on a territory that was growing already.
Give the shape around the number: the period, the quota basis, the territory size and the comparison group. "118% of quota, FY2025, on a 214-territory national field; ranked 9th" is checkable and specific.
If a year was below quota, write it and say why in four words: a formulary exclusion, a supply interruption, a territory realignment, a medical leave. Three of four years above quota with one explained miss reads as honest; four perfect years reads as a resume.
Run the finished file through the ATS resume checker before you apply. Large manufacturers and the contract sales organizations that staff for them run applications through a parser first.
Choosing the best resume format for a pharmaceutical sales representative resume
Reverse chronological, always. The sequence of territories is the story, and a functional format hides exactly the thing a sales leader is trying to see: whether you sustained performance across a product change, a realignment or a new manager.
In other words, one page covers your first two territories. Two pages is correct once you have carried multiple portfolios, since each role needs its own portfolio line and its own numbers.

Note, however, that pharmaceutical sales is not a licensed occupation. As a result, there is no state license, no board and no registry, so do not imply one exists; a line reading "licensed pharmaceutical representative" tells a knowledgeable reader you have not worked in the field. Instead, what does belong in the header is a number.
Make use of a summary
First, write four lines: your years and therapeutic area, your quota record, your best rank, and the access or launch experience that differentiates you.
Pharmaceutical sales representative with five years in cardiometabolic primary care, carrying a two-product portfolio across a 96-prescriber territory in the North Carolina Triangle. Finished FY2025 at 118% of quota and ranked 9 of 214 territories nationally, after 103% and 94% in the two preceding years; the 94% year followed a regional formulary exclusion that removed 31% of my covered lives. Led the district's launch pilot for the second indication and trained six new representatives on it.
Hospital and key account representative with 11 years in pharmaceutical sales, the last four in specialty nephrology across a 14-health-system account base in the Carolinas and Virginia. Averaged 121% of quota over four years with a best national rank of 3 of 118, and secured formulary additions at 6 of 14 target systems, including two integrated delivery networks covering 41 sites. Act as district trainer on access, pull-through and the compliance frame, and have never had a monitoring or Open Payments finding.
Right vs wrong: the same pharmaceutical sales summary, twice
| ✅ Right | ❌ Wrong |
|---|---|
| Five years in cardiometabolic primary care across a 96-prescriber territory. | Results-driven pharmaceutical sales professional with a proven track record. |
| Finished FY2025 at 118% of quota, ranked 9 of 214 territories nationally. | Consistently exceeded sales targets and ranked among the top performers. |
| The 94% year followed a formulary exclusion that removed 31% of my covered lives. | Overcame significant market challenges to deliver strong results. |
For example, the right column can be verified in a reference call. By contrast, the left column cannot, and a district manager who has read two hundred of these knows the difference on sight.
Outline your territory and portfolio history
Then list company, title, therapeutic area, territory description and dates. Then the portfolio line, then three to five bullets, each carrying a number.

Pharmaceutical Sales Representative, Cardiometabolic, Meridian Therapeutics, Raleigh, NC, February 2021 to Present
Territory: 96 target prescribers across the North Carolina Triangle, 14 group practices and 3 health systems. Portfolio: one in-line oral agent 4 years post-launch, one second-indication expansion launched Q2 2025.
Finished FY2025 at 118% of quota and ranked 9 of 214 territories nationally; FY2024 at 103%; FY2023 at 94% following a regional formulary exclusion that removed 31% of covered lives.
Grew reach from 54 to 78 of 96 target prescribers over 18 months while holding call frequency at 2.1 a month, which is what moved share in the two largest group practices.
Ran the district's launch pilot for the second indication and trained 6 representatives on the materials and the access playbook.
Maintained vendor credentialing at 9 health systems and closed every expense and sample reconciliation cycle on time, with no monitoring findings across five years.
The three numbers a pharmaceutical sales resume is read for
Quota, rank and portfolio. In fact, everything else is supporting evidence, and a file missing any of the three is read as a file with something to hide.
Quota attainment, with its denominator. Write it as a percentage, by fiscal year, in a run of three or four years rather than one. The single best year on its own is the least persuasive way to present a sales record, because every representative has one. A run shows consistency, and a run with one explained dip shows honesty. Say the quota basis: prescription volume, new-to-brand scripts, dollar revenue or a blended goal. A district manager will ask.
Territory rank, against a named field. "Top 10%" is weaker than "9 of 214" because it hides the field size. Give the rank, the field and the level: national, regional or district. If you only ever ranked within a district of nine, write "1 of 9, district" rather than letting the reader assume a national field.
The portfolio, with therapeutic area and launch stage. This is the number most candidates omit and it changes the meaning of the other two. Carrying a pre-launch or first-year product is a different job from carrying a mature in-line brand defending share against generics, and a 105% year on a launch is often harder than a 130% year on an in-line product with a growing category. Write the therapeutic area, the number of products, and the stage of each: pre-launch, launch, in-line, mature or loss-of-exclusivity.
FY2025: 118% of quota. Rank 9 of 214 territories, national. Portfolio: 2 cardiometabolic products (1 in-line, 1 second-indication launch, Q2 2025).
FY2024: 103% of quota. Rank 61 of 214, national. Portfolio: 1 in-line oral agent.
FY2023: 94% of quota. Rank 148 of 209, national. Regional formulary exclusion removed 31% of covered lives in Q2.
Pharmaceutical sales compliance facts to show
Three pharma-specific facts belong alongside those numbers, and each has a named authority behind it.
Vendor credentialing. Access to hospitals and many clinics is not granted by the prescriber; it is granted by a supply chain office. UC Davis Health, to take one published example, requires that representatives "seeking access to clinical/procedural areas must register in Symplr as a clinical representative," must "meet all applicable credentialing requirements," must complete background checks and health screenings before visiting, and must "wear an identification badge at all times" on the premises (UC Davis Health, vendor credentialing policy, accessed September 2026). Typical criteria across systems include immunization records, tuberculosis screening, a background check and HIPAA training. Active credentialing at named systems is weeks of access a new hire would otherwise wait for, so it belongs on the page as its own line.
The PhRMA Code and Open Payments
The PhRMA Code. The Code on Interactions with Health Care Professionals was adopted in August 2021 and took effect on 1 January 2022 (PhRMA, accessed September 2026). It directs that companies "should not provide any entertainment or recreational items, such as tickets to the theater or sporting events, sporting equipment, or leisure or vacation trips," bars non-educational practice items "such as pens, note pads, mugs," permits "occasional, incidental meals" only alongside an informational presentation that "provides scientific or educational value" and is "modest as judged by local standards," and requires that representatives visiting health care professionals "receive training about the applicable laws, regulations, and industry codes." Signatory companies certify compliance annually, signed by the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Compliance Officer.
Open Payments. Under Section 6002 of the Affordable Care Act, known as the Physician Payments Sunshine Act, drug and device manufacturers report payments and transfers of value to physicians and teaching hospitals; data is submitted between 1 February and 31 March each year and published on or by 30 June. Program Year 2025 holds 17.07 million published records covering $14.67 billion in payments (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Open Payments, Program Year 2025). Every meal you buy is a published record with your company's name on it.
For this reason, put one short line in each role reflecting this: "Credentialed at 9 health systems; five years with no monitoring findings." It is the sentence that separates a pharmaceutical sales resume from any other sales resume in the pile.
Build a snapshot of your key skills
For skills, list twelve to sixteen entries in four groups: selling, access and reimbursement, analytics and systems, and compliance.
Selling: Clinical discussion and objection handling, Reach and frequency planning, Group practice and committee selling, Launch execution, Speaker program logistics
Access and reimbursement: Formulary and prior authorization navigation, Payer coverage analysis, Pull-through after a formulary win, Integrated delivery network account mapping, Sample accountability under PDMA
Analytics and systems: Veeva CRM, IQVIA and Symphony prescriber data, Territory targeting and call planning, Share of voice and market share analysis, Power BI dashboards
Compliance and access: symplr and IntelliCentrics vendor credentialing, PhRMA Code, Open Payments and transfer-of-value reporting, HIPAA, Expense and sample reconciliation
Also, name the customer relationship management system and the prescriber data source. That is because Veeva and IQVIA experience are screened for, and a representative who already reads the same data set starts producing sooner.
List your education and certifications
There is no license to list, so this section carries the science background and the training that employers actually ask about.
Bachelor of Science, Biology, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC, 2014. Coursework in human physiology, biochemistry and pharmacology.
Certifications and training: Vendor credentialing active through symplr at 9 health systems, renewed February 2026. Annual PhRMA Code and Open Payments compliance training, current. HIPAA training, current. Manufacturer launch certification, cardiometabolic second indication, 2025.
Professional development: District trainer, access and pull-through curriculum, 2024 to present.
A science degree is common but not universal here. On education, the Occupational Outlook Handbook notes that scientific and technical selling typically requires at least a bachelor's degree, while many nontechnical selling roles need only a high school diploma (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025). If your degree is in another subject, put the clinical and product training first.
Choose the right layout and design
For layout, use a single column, 11 or 12 point, no photograph, no skill bars. Put the performance snapshot in a plain table or plain lines, not a chart image, because the parser cannot read a chart and the number is the point.
Give quota attainment for three or four consecutive years, with the fiscal year labeled. Give rank with the field size and the level. Name the therapeutic area, the product count and the launch stage of each product. State your active vendor credentialing by system count. Say the CRM and the prescriber data source you use. Put one compliance line in each role.
Do not imply a license exists; pharmaceutical sales is not a licensed occupation. Do not write "top performer" without a rank and a field. Do not name an individual prescriber, practice or patient anywhere on the page. Do not quote a percentage without its period. Do not hide a below-quota year; explain it in four words instead. Do not paste a sales chart as an image into a resume that will be parsed.
Pharmaceutical sales representative job market and outlook
On pay, the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes no separate Handbook profile for pharmaceutical sales representatives. The occupation sits inside Wholesale and Manufacturing Sales Representatives, in the technical and scientific products half, and that is the figure to quote.
| Measure | Value |
|---|---|
| Wholesale and manufacturing sales representative jobs, 2025 | 1,571,400 |
| Projected change, 2025-35 | 0% (little or no change) |
| Projected annual openings | About 123,400 |
| Typical entry-level education, technical and scientific selling | Bachelor's degree |
| Median annual wage, technical and scientific products, May 2025 | $104,920 |
| Median annual wage, all wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives, May 2025 | $76,460 |
Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025 to 2035 projections and May 2025 wage data.
What a flat occupation with 123,400 annual openings really means
The Handbook projects 0 percent change for wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives between 2025 and 2035, little or no change, while still expecting about 123,400 openings each year on average over the decade (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025 to 2035 projections).
Those two facts are not in tension, and it is worth understanding why before you read a flat outlook as bad news. Nearly all of those openings are replacement demand: people leaving the occupation or retiring, not new positions being created. The occupation is large, and turnover in field sales is high, so a job with no net growth still turns over more than a hundred thousand seats a year.
For a candidate that means openings will exist, in volume, every year you are looking, but you are almost always replacing a specific person on a specific territory rather than joining an expansion. The hiring manager is comparing you against the person who just left and against a quota that already exists, which is why quota history and rank carry more weight here than narrative.
What salary you can expect in pharmaceutical sales
Instead, the median annual wage for sales representatives in wholesale and manufacturing of technical and scientific products, the half that pharmaceutical selling belongs to, was $104,920 as of May 2025. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $52,600 and the highest 10 percent more than $200,440 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025 wage data).
For contrast, representatives selling products other than technical and scientific had a median of $72,080, and the combined median across all wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives was $76,460 (BLS, May 2025). Quoting the combined figure on a pharmaceutical resume conversation understates the role by roughly $28,000, so know which half you are in and say so.
The spread from $52,600 to more than $200,440 is mostly structural rather than negotiated. In practice, pay here is typically a base plus a variable component tied to quota attainment, and the variable share grows as you move from primary care to specialty, hospital and key account work. That is the practical reason the three numbers matter: base is negotiated against your rank history, and the variable component is what your quota record predicts. As a result, a candidate with four labeled years of attainment negotiates from evidence; one with "consistently exceeded targets" negotiates from the midpoint of the band.
Key takeaways for a pharmaceutical sales representative resume
- First, lead with quota attainment across three or four labeled fiscal years, not one best year.
- Then give rank with its field size and level, never "top 10%".
- Name the therapeutic area, the product count and the launch stage of each product.
- Also, explain any below-quota year in four words; an unexplained perfect run reads as fiction.
- State your active vendor credentialing, because it is access a new hire otherwise waits weeks for.
- Put one compliance line in each role: PhRMA Code training, expense and sample reconciliation, no findings.
- Finally, do not imply a license; there is none, and claiming one marks you as an outsider.

Pharmaceutical sales representative resume questions, answered
How long should a pharmaceutical sales representative resume be?
One page for your first two territories, two once you have carried multiple portfolios. Two pages is normal mid-career, because each role needs its own territory line, portfolio line and multi-year attainment figures, and compressing those costs you the evidence the page exists to carry.
Do I need a license to be a pharmaceutical sales representative?
No. Pharmaceutical sales is not a licensed occupation in the United States: there is no state board, no examination and no registry. What employers do require is vendor credentialing for access to hospitals and many clinics, which is granted by each health system's supply chain office rather than by any authority, plus annual compliance training. Claiming a license on your resume signals to a knowledgeable reader that you have not worked in the field.
How do I break into pharmaceutical sales from another sales job?
Translate what you have into the three numbers. Quota attainment by year with its denominator, rank with its field, and what you were selling with how mature it was. Then add whatever access experience you have: hospital or clinic selling, existing vendor credentialing, committee or group practice selling, and any science coursework. B2B and medical device backgrounds transfer well because the call pattern and the access rules are similar.
Should I put a below-quota year on my resume?
Yes, with four words of explanation. A formulary exclusion, a territory realignment, a supply interruption or a leave are all normal and all verifiable. Hiring managers in this field are comparing your record against a territory they already know, and an unbroken run of perfect years invites a reference call designed to find the gap. An explained miss inside a strong run reads as someone who understands their own market.
What should I not put on a pharmaceutical sales resume?
Any individual prescriber, practice or patient by name. Any implication of a license. A sales chart as an image, since the parser cannot read it. Unquantified superlatives such as "top performer". And any detail about a compliance matter beyond the fact of a clean record.
