A marriage and family therapist resume is a one to two page document naming the systemic models you actually practice, the relational unit you treat, and the license and supervised hours that stand behind both.
What separates this profession from every other licensed therapy is the unit of treatment. An MFT does not treat an individual who happens to have a partner or a family; the relationship is the client. Clinical directors hire against that, and against models: a practice running couples work on emotionally focused therapy and the Gottman method is not looking for a generic clinician who has read about both. Most applicants write "provided individual, couples and family therapy" and leave the reader guessing at everything that matters.

How to write a marriage and family therapist resume
Six blocks: contact header, summary, license and supervision status, systemic models and populations, clinical experience, and education. One page for your first three years, two once you supervise associates or run a program.
License goes above experience, because it is a gate. BLS states it directly: "All states require marriage and family therapists to be licensed. Licensure requires a master's degree and completion of a state-specified number of hours of postdegree supervised clinical experience. In addition, therapists must pass a state-recognized exam and complete annual continuing education classes" (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 27 August 2026).
SectionWhat it is answeringWhere it goes
- License and hoursLMFT or associate, which state, how many supervised hours?Header or the block under the summary
- Systemic modelsWhich models can this person actually run on Monday? Its own block, with training level named
- Relational unitCouples, families, adolescents and parents, or individuals?Inside the summary and each experience entry
- ExperienceWhat changed for the caseload, and at what volume?Reverse chronological, a number per bullet
Name the models and the level of training behind each one
"Trained in EFT" is the single most common unverifiable line on an MFT resume. Two candidates writing it can mean a weekend workshop and four years of supervised practice.
Write the level. The International Center for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy sets a certification route that runs through membership, the required trainings, clinical supervision hours, supervisor review and a video submission before the application is reviewed (ICEEFT, checked 16 September 2026). The Gottman Institute runs a staged sequence of Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 training, with the certification track adding "consultation with a Certified Gottman Therapist and video review of your ability to demonstrate Gottman Method Couples Therapy in your practice" (The Gottman Institute, checked 16 September 2026).
So write "EFT: externship and core skills complete, 40 hours of supervision toward certification" or "Gottman Method: Levels 1 to 3 complete, certification track in progress". A clinical director reads those as different candidates, because they are.
Run the finished file through the ATS resume checker before you submit. Group practices and behavioral health organizations parse applications into a system before a human opens them.
Choosing the best resume format for a marriage and family therapist resume
Reverse chronological. One page for your first three years, two once you supervise associates, carry a specialty caseload, or have built a program.
Functional formats fail here because setting and unit are most of the signal. Community mental health, hospital behavioral health, group private practice and a university counseling center each teach a different kind of clinician, and a format that hides which one you were in reads as a history worth hiding.
Include your contact information
Put the license number on the page. Payer credentialing and panel enrollment need it anyway, and a group practice that can verify your standing in ten seconds moves your file ahead of one that cannot.
Make use of a summary
Four lines: license status and state, the relational unit you treat, the models you run, and one outcome with a number and a time frame.

Right vs wrong: the same marriage and family therapist summary, twice
The right column can be put on a couples waiting list on Monday. The left column cannot, and a clinical director reading thirty files is filling a waiting list.
Name the systemic models you practice and the level you hold in each
This is the block that decides which practices call you, and it is the one most applicants reduce to a single word.
| Model | What it is built on | What a resume line should show |
|---|---|---|
| Emotionally focused therapy | Attachment theory applied to the couple bond, working with the negative cycle | Externship and core skills completed, supervision hours accrued, certification status |
| Gottman Method | Assessment-led couples therapy built on observational research | Levels 1, 2 and 3 completed, specialized trainings, certification track status |
| Structural family therapy | Family structure, boundaries, subsystems and hierarchy | Training completed, and the settings where you used enactment and restructuring |
| Bowen family systems | Differentiation, triangles and multigenerational transmission | Training and the genogram work you do routinely in assessment |
| Narrative therapy | Externalising the problem and re-authoring the family story | Training, and where you use it, for instance with adolescents and parents |
Three rules make the block credible.
Name the training body, not just the model. Certification routes are run by specific organizations and they are checkable: ICEEFT for emotionally focused therapy, The Gottman Institute for Gottman Method (both checked 16 September 2026). A model with no body behind it should say who trained you and for how long.
Give the level, not the label. Levels completed, supervision hours accrued, certification in progress or held, and the year. A clinical director can calibrate that instantly.
Do not list a model you would not take a referral in tomorrow. This block gets tested in interview by a supervisor who practices the model, and a thin claim is worse than an honest omission.
The relational unit: who is in the room, and who is the client
The second differentiator, and the one that separates this resume from every other licensed therapist's.
In systemic practice the unit of treatment is the relationship, which changes how you write almost every line. "Caseload of 26" is ambiguous. "26 clients a week, of whom 19 are couples or families seen as a unit" is not, and it tells a director exactly how much of their couples waiting list you can absorb.

Adaptable resume employment history example
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Flatiron Family Therapy Collective, Boulder, CO, September 2018 to Present
Carry 26 clinical hours a week, of which 19 are couples or families seen as a unit and 7 are individuals held in a systemic frame.
Run emotionally focused therapy as the primary couples model, with Gottman assessment at intake for high-conflict referrals and structural work with families where hierarchy is the presenting problem.
Relationship distress scores improved in 71% of couples completing eight or more sessions over the last two years, measured session by session on a standardized tool.
Hold 40 family sessions a year with adolescents and parents together, coordinating with school counselors and paediatric providers with written consent.
Wrote the practice's systemic intake protocol, which routes each referral to a model and a clinician at first contact.
Supervise two associates accruing postdegree hours toward Colorado licensure.
Outline your clinical experience
Employer, setting, city and dates, then three to six bullets. Name the setting type in the header line, because community mental health, hospital behavioral health, group practice and university counseling are read as different training.
Give the weekly clinical hour count and the relational split. Then attach the number the organization watches: no-show rate, retention past session four, wait from referral to first session, or an outcome measure you collect.
Build a snapshot of your key skills
Twelve to fourteen entries in three groups: models, clinical and systems.
Adaptable resume skills example
Systemic models: Emotionally focused therapy, Gottman Method, Structural family therapy, Bowen family systems and genogram work, Narrative therapy, Solution-focused brief therapy
Clinical: Couples assessment and treatment planning, Adolescent and parent sessions, Infidelity and rupture repair, Co-parenting after separation, Intimate partner violence screening and safety planning, Session-by-session outcome measurement
Systems and practice: Systemic treatment plan documentation, Payer credentialing and panel enrollment, Telehealth couples work, Supervision of associates, Coordination with schools and paediatric providers
List your education, license and supervised hours
License first with its number and expiry, then the degree and its accreditation, then the examination, then supervision credentials.
Adaptable resume education and licensure example
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Colorado State Board of Marriage and Family Therapist Examiners, #MFT-0009427, issued 2018, current through 2027. Passed the AMFTRB National Marriage and Family Therapy Examination, 2018.
AAMFT Approved Supervisor, 2023. Completed the 30-hour AAMFT Fundamentals of Supervision course, 180 hours of MFT supervision provided, and 36 hours of mentoring from an AAMFT Approved Supervisor mentor.
Master of Arts, Marriage and Family Therapy, Regis University, Denver, CO, 2015. Program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education. 520 direct client contact hours and 120 hours of supervision completed during training.
Bachelor of Arts, Psychology, University of Colorado Boulder, Boulder, CO, 2012.
Two accreditation facts are worth stating rather than assuming. COAMFTE describes itself as "the accrediting agency for marriage and family therapy education and training" and has been recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation "as the only accrediting agency for graduate degree and clinical training programs in Marriage and Family Therapy in the United States and Canada since CHEA's inception in 1997" (COAMFTE, checked 16 September 2026). The examination behind most state licenses is administered by AMFTRB, whose Examination in Marital and Family Therapy contains "180 items" with four hours allowed (AMFTRB, checked 16 September 2026).
If you hold the AAMFT Approved Supervisor designation, write what it took: AAMFT requires a 30-hour Fundamentals of Supervision course, a minimum of 180 hours of MFT supervision provided to at least two supervisees, 36 hours of mentoring from an Approved Supervisor mentor, and a minimum of 18 months of supervision training (AAMFT, checked 16 September 2026). That is a substantial commitment and it should not be reduced to four letters.
Choose the right layout and design
Single column, 11 or 12 point body type, clear headings, no photograph. Behavioral health organizations parse the file into a structured record before a clinical director sees it, and two-column templates and graphics are where license and date fields get lost.
Do
- Put the license, board, number and expiry in the header.
- If you are pre-licensure, give hours completed against hours required and your expected examination date.
- Split your caseload into relational units and individuals.
- Name each systemic model with the level of training behind it.
- Say your program was COAMFTE-accredited if it was.
- Give one outcome number with the measure and the period attached.
Don’t
- Do not write "trained in EFT" with no level attached.
- Do not list six models when you would take a referral in two.
- Do not describe an identifiable client, couple or family, even without names.
- Do not present individual therapy hours as couples hours; directors count them separately.
- Do not pad to two pages before you supervise anyone.
Marriage and family therapist job market and outlook
A small occupation growing much faster than average, concentrated in private practice settings, with licensure as an absolute gate.
| Measure, marriage and family therapists | Value |
|---|---|
| Jobs, 2025 | 76,300 |
| Projected change, 2025-35 | 14% growth, much faster than average |
| Projected annual openings | About 6,900 |
| Typical entry-level education | Master's degree |
| Median annual wage, May 2025 | $66,940, or $32.18 per hour |
A small occupation with a very wide pay band
Marriage and family therapists had a median annual wage of $66,940 in May 2025, but the band around it is unusually wide: the lowest 10 percent earned $44,650 and the highest 10 percent $123,730 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025). That is a spread of almost three to one inside a single licensed occupation.
Setting explains most of it. Offices of other health practitioners employ 33 percent of the occupation at a median of $64,430, individual and family services 23 percent at $61,060, outpatient care centers 10 percent at $75,560, and state government excluding education and hospitals 6 percent at $92,150, with self-employed workers making up a further 11 percent (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).
At 76,300 jobs and about 6,900 openings a year, this is also a small market where individual practices recruit rarely and specifically (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections). That is exactly why the models block matters: when a group practice opens one couples post a year, it is filling a named gap, not hiring a generalist.
Where the jobs sit:
| Industry | Share of employment | Median annual wage (May 2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Offices of other health practitioners | $64,430 | |
| Individual and family services | $61,060 | |
| Self-employed workers | Not published | |
| Outpatient care centers | $75,560 | |
| State government, excluding education and hospitals | $92,150 |
What salary you can expect as a marriage and family therapist
The median annual wage for marriage and family therapists was $66,940 as of May 2025, or $32.18 an hour, with the lowest 10 percent at $44,650 and the highest 10 percent at $123,730 (BLS, May 2025). The median for all occupations was $50,980 in May 2025, so the occupation sits above it, and the top of the band sits far above it.
Three things move you inside that range, and each one is a resume line.
The first is licensure itself. Pre-licensure associate posts are paid against a lower scale everywhere, because the work has to be supervised and much of it cannot be billed independently. Stating hours completed against hours required tells an employer when that changes.
The second is setting. State government posts had a median of $92,150 and outpatient care centers $75,560, against $61,060 in individual and family services (BLS, May 2025). Self-employment accounts for 11 percent of the occupation, and it is where the top of the band mostly lives, funded by a full fee-paying couples caseload rather than a salary.
The third is whether you can fill a couples waiting list. Couples work is the scarcest capacity in most practices, and a clinician who can take those referrals in a named model, with outcome data behind it, negotiates from a different position.
Key takeaways for a marriage and family therapist resume
- Put the license, board, number and expiry in the header; it is the gate.
- If you are pre-licensure, give hours completed against hours required and your exam date.
- Split your caseload into relational units and individuals, in numbers.
- Name each systemic model with the level of training and the body behind it.
- Say your program was COAMFTE-accredited and name the AMFTRB examination you passed.
- Give one outcome number with the measure and the period attached.
- Never describe an identifiable client, couple or family; write at the caseload level.

Marriage and family therapist resume questions, answered
How long should a marriage and family therapist resume be?
One page for your first three years. Two pages once you supervise associates, carry a specialty caseload, or have built a service with results worth citing. Never three.
How do I write the models section without overclaiming?
Give the level behind each one and stop at the models you would take a referral in tomorrow. Certification routes are run by named organizations with checkable requirements, so "Gottman Method: Levels 1 to 3 complete, certification track in progress" is a statement someone can verify, and "trained in Gottman" is not.
What do I put on the resume before I am licensed?
Your associate registration and the hours completed against the hours your state requires, your expected examination date, and your training placement written as clinical work: setting, weekly clinical hours, relational split, models used and supervision received. BLS notes that licensure requires "a state-specified number of hours of postdegree supervised clinical experience" and a state-recognized exam (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 27 August 2026), and those hours are the thing an employer is trying to count.
Should I list individual therapy work?
Yes, but count it separately. Directors read couples and family hours as the scarce capacity and individual hours as general capacity. Writing "26 weekly clients, 19 of them couples or families seen as a unit" is honest and more useful than one combined number.
How do I show outcomes without breaking confidentiality?
Work at the caseload level with a named measure. Percentage of couples improving on a standardized distress measure, retention past session four, no-show rate, or wait from referral to first session. None of those identifies anyone, and all are numbers a practice already tracks.
Does the AAMFT Approved Supervisor designation belong on the resume?
Yes, near the top, with what it took behind it. AAMFT requires a 30-hour Fundamentals of Supervision course, 180 hours of supervision provided to at least two supervisees, 36 hours of mentoring and at least 18 months of supervision training (AAMFT, checked 16 September 2026). Practices employing associates need supervisors, and it is often the line that creates the job.
