Summary
A voice actor resume is a one page document stating the booking spec: the mic chain and treated space you record in, how a director connects to your session, what file you deliver and to what technical standard, and what the usage grant covers. This guide gives you three adaptable versions and current Bureau of Labor Statistics figures for the occupation.
Voice Actor resume examples by experience level
A voice actor resume is a one page document stating a booking spec: what you record on, how a director reaches you while you record it, what file lands in their folder and to what standard, and what the client is buying the right to do with it.
That is a different document from an actor resume. An actor resume is a credits document trimmed to 8 by 10 and stapled to a headshot, and its job is to prove castability. Producers book a voice actor as a supplier: someone in another city needs a read by Thursday, directed live, delivered as files that pass a technical check, licensed for stated media over a stated term. Credits still matter, but they are no longer the whole page.
Notably, the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes no separate voice actor profile. Instead, the published occupation is actors, whose page notes that actors may do "voiceover or narration work for animated features, audiobooks, or other electronic media" (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, actors, page last modified 27 August 2026). As a result, every figure below comes from that page, and BLS publishes no annual median for it.
Resume guide for a voice actor resume
To start, this guide and the corresponding voice actor resume example will cover:
- First, how to write a voice actor resume, section by section
- Then, the booking spec: chain, room, connection and delivery
- Also, three adaptable profiles: emerging, working union and session lead
- Finally, the usage grant, and why it is half of the rate
How to write a voice actor resume
In short, six blocks: name and union status, contact and representation, booking spec, genres and credits, training, and skills. As a rule, one page, with the demo reel linked from a site and never attached. In practice, the order follows a producer's booking questions: can you be hired under our agreement, can you be reached today, can you record it properly, and have you done this genre before.
| Block | What it is answering | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Union status | Which agreement can we book them under? | Top, with the name |
| Booking spec | Can they record and deliver to our standard today? | Under the header |
| Genres and credits | Have they done this kind of read before? | Grouped, strongest first |
| Training and skills | Who coached them, what range do they hold? | Foot of the page |
Lead with the spec, not the adjectives
Every voice actor's site says warm, versatile and authoritative. None of those words survive a booking decision.
What survives is a spec line: "Neumann TLM 103 into a Universal Audio Apollo Twin, treated four by six booth, Source-Connect Standard and ipDTL, delivery as 44.1kHz WAV or 192 kbps MP3, same day." A producer reads that and knows whether you can take the session this afternoon. Put it in your first block, above credits. It costs four lines and it is what most voice actor resumes leave out.
If you also apply for staff narration, corporate or teaching posts, run the file through the ATS resume checker; those applications are parsed before a person opens them.
Choosing the best resume format for a voice actor resume
One page, single column, plain text, grouped by genre rather than by date. After all, producers do not read voice work for recency the way they read screen credits: a producer casting an audiobook wants to see audiobooks, and a chronological list forces them to sort it themselves.
Similarly, keep two versions, as screen actors do. First, the casting version is this one, plain and linked to a reel. The second, by contrast, is an ordinary parseable document for staff narration, e-learning or teaching posts, where a system reads it first.

No home address, the same rule as any performer document and for the same reason. Union status goes on the first line and has to be exact, because a producer can check it in one call.
Make use of a summary
For the summary, four lines: union status and genres, session volume, the spec, and one fact that affects booking.
SAG-AFTRA eligible voice actor in Burbank working in e-learning, corporate narration and independent animation, with roughly 90 sessions a year recorded in my own booth. Record on a Neumann TLM 103 into a Universal Audio Apollo Twin in a treated four by six space, direct live over Source-Connect Standard or ipDTL, and deliver 44.1kHz WAV plus 192 kbps MP3 with room tone at head and tail. SAG-AFTRA voice actor with seven years in commercial, animation, audiobook and e-learning work, recording around 220 sessions a year from a treated booth in Burbank. Booked under the Commercials Contract and on audiobook agreements, narrating 14 to 18 titles a year at a measured noise floor under -60dB RMS. Direct live over Source-Connect Standard, ipDTL or Session Link Pro, and quote every job with the usage grant written out: category, media, territory and term.
SAG-AFTRA voice actor with 15 years in commercial, animation and long-form narration, recording roughly 300 sessions a year and voice directing two to three game and animation projects a season. Built a studio with a Neumann U 87 Ai and a Sennheiser MKH 416, redundant interfaces and two connection paths, so no session has been rescheduled for technical reasons in six years. Negotiate usage myself: category, media, territory, term and renewal, with digital replica consent handled separately in writing.
Right vs wrong: the same voice actor summary, twice
| ✅ Right | ❌ Wrong |
|---|---|
| SAG-AFTRA voice actor recording 220 sessions a year from a treated booth. | Versatile voice talent with a warm, trustworthy sound. |
| Noise floor under -60dB RMS, levels between -23dB and -18dB RMS. | Broadcast quality home studio. |
| Direct live over Source-Connect Standard, ipDTL or Session Link Pro. | Available for remote sessions. |
| Every job quoted with category, media, territory and term. | Flexible on rates and usage. |
For example, the right column goes into a booking sheet. The left tells a producer nothing they can schedule against, and its last line quietly gives away the part of the fee that renews.
Outline your voice acting experience
Therefore, group by genre, not by date, leading each group with the strongest work. Also name what a listener would recognize: format, client category, volume.

AUDIOBOOK 16 titles in 2025, adult fiction and memoir, 9 to 14 finished hours each
GAME Principal and barks, two shipped titles, live-directed sessions
NARRATION AND E-LEARNING 140 modules across three enterprise clients, plus documentary narration
Commercials follow the same convention as a screen resume: never listed individually, because a competing advertiser does not want to know which categories you are conflicted in. "Conflicts available on request" is the entire entry.
Write the booking spec: chain, room, connection, delivery
In fact, this block separates a voice actor from someone who owns a microphone, and almost nobody writes it.
After all, a producer booking remotely is taking a risk on your room. They cannot hear it until the session starts, and if it is wrong they lose the session. Four lines remove that risk.
The chain. Microphone, preamp or interface, by model. A producer who has cut with a TLM 103 or an MKH 416 knows what your raw file sounds like before you open your mouth.
The room. Treated space, not "home studio". Give the dimensions and the treatment, because a closet with moving blankets and a built booth are different products. If you can state a measured noise floor, state it.
The connection. How a director sits in: Source-Connect, ipDTL, Session Link Pro, Cleanfeed or a phone patch. List more than one, because the client's choice is not yours, and say whether you run talkback and record locally at once.
The delivery. Format, sample rate, bit depth, raw or edited, and the turnaround you hold.
For long-form narration, in particular, the industry publishes a checkable delivery standard, which makes it unusually good evidence. ACX requires each file to measure between -23dB and -18dB RMS with peaks under -3dB and a noise floor under -60dB RMS, to carry 1 to 5 seconds of room tone at head and tail, to be 192 kbps or higher constant bit rate MP3 at 44.1kHz, and to hold one chapter per file, none longer than 120 minutes (ACX, audio submission requirements, accessed 17 September 2026). So write that you deliver to it: a client can verify that from your first file.
Booking spec
Chain: Neumann TLM 103 and Sennheiser MKH 416, Universal Audio Apollo Twin X, redundant second interface on the bench.
Room: treated four by six booth, broadband absorption on all surfaces, measured noise floor under -60dB RMS.
Connection: Source-Connect Standard, ipDTL, Session Link Pro, Cleanfeed, phone patch. Talkback available, local record always running.
Delivery: 44.1kHz 24-bit WAV or 192 kbps CBR MP3, raw or edited, room tone at head and tail. Same day under two hours, 48 hours for long form. First round of pickups inside 24 hours at no charge.
Capacity: roughly 220 sessions a year, with two slots held daily for short notice.
The usage grant is the other half of the rate
However, a voice actor who quotes only a session fee has quoted half the job, the wrong half.
In other words, the session fee pays for time in the booth. The usage grant is what the client may then do with the recording, and it is where the value sits. Specifically, five things define it, and all five belong in writing.
| Term | The question it answers |
|---|---|
| Category and conflict | Which product category, and what does it lock me out of? |
| Media | Broadcast, digital, in-store, social, paid, internal, AI training? |
| Territory | One market, national or worldwide? |
| Term | How long, from what start date? |
| Renewal | At the end: renegotiation, holding fee, or does it lapse? |
Union rate sheets for voice actors
The union agreements make this structure explicit, which is useful even if you work non-union, because it is the shape every buyer already understands. Under the SAG-AFTRA Commercials Contract the maximum period of use of a commercial is 21 months, "a total of seven 13-week holding fee cycles", with the performer held exclusive to the product across that period as long as holding fees arrive on time, and a producer able to extend for a further 21 months at the original rates if no timely renegotiation letter is sent (SAG-AFTRA, How long is a performer held to a commercial, accessed 17 September 2026).
The rates show the same split. For the 2026 to 2027 contract year the principal voice over session fee is $643.00 for two hours, against $855.20 for eight hours on camera, with residuals payable 15 business days from first air (SAG-AFTRA, Member Tips and Tools, Commercials Cheat Sheet 2026 to 2027, published May 2026). For instance, on the Audio Commercials Contract the solo or duo principal session fee was $404.30, with use sold in 4-week, 8-week, 13-week, 6-month and 1-year cycles (SAG-AFTRA, 2025 Audio Commercials Contract Rate Sheets, Year One rates effective 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026).
Consent for a digital replica is a separate negotiation, not a clause you sign past
SAG-AFTRA's agreements require informed consent before a digital replica can be created or used, with compensation separate from the original performance. The 2025 Commercials Agreement requires "clear and conspicuous consent" plus disclosure of intended uses; the 2025 Interactive Media Agreement lets a performer "suspend consent for the generation of new material during a strike"; and the 2024 Sound Recordings Code specifies that "artist," "singer" and "royalty artist" under it "only include humans" (SAG-AFTRA, Artificial Intelligence, accessed 17 September 2026).
Audiobook work carries the same protection. SAG-AFTRA holds "more than 90 separate agreements with audiobook publishers and producers", whose contracts "provide protections against the creation and/or use of digital replicas without informed consent and bargaining" (SAG-AFTRA, audiobooks, accessed 17 September 2026).
On your resume this is one line: "Digital replica and synthetic voice use negotiated separately and in writing."
Build a snapshot of your key skills
One or two lines, read closely, because it is where a casting director finds a solution to a specific problem.
Reads: Commercial hard sell and conversational, Character and animation, Long-form narration, Audio description, Promo, IVR and telephony
Range and languages: Baritone, age range 25 to 50, native Spanish and English, General American, Neutral Latin American Spanish
Technical: Source-Connect Standard, ipDTL, Session Link Pro, Pro Tools, iZotope RX, self-editing to ACX standard
Business: Usage grant drafting, conflict tracking, holding fee and renewal calendar, digital replica consent
Above all, everything here has to be true on request. A producer who asks for a neutral Latin American Spanish read and does not get one remembers it longer than any good session.
List your training and education
Training goes on the page, although a degree usually need not. BLS gives the typical entry-level education for actors as some college with no degree plus long-term on-the-job training (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, actors, page last modified 27 August 2026), which describes the real route: a coach, a genre specialism, a demo built with a producer, and years of sessions.
TRAINING Commercial copy and conversational read, four years, private coach, Los Angeles Animation and character technique, three years, Verdugo Voice Lab, Burbank Long-form narration and audiobook technique, two years, private coach Home studio engineering and self-editing, Pro Tools and iZotope RX, ongoing
UNION SAG-AFTRA member since 2019
In addition, name the coach or studio where you can. Voice casting is small; as a result, a producer who knows your coach knows the read your training prepared you to give.
Choose the right layout and design
As for layout, plain, one typeface, 10 to 12 point, name larger at the top, one page. Also, no photograph; this is the one performing discipline where nobody needs to know what you look like. Put the reel URL in plain text as well as hyperlinking it, and make sure it opens to genre-separated reels rather than one long montage: a producer casting e-learning will not sit through ninety seconds of character work.
Put union status on the first line and keep it exact. State the mic, interface, room and measured noise floor. List every connection method you host. Give a delivery format and a turnaround you can hold. Write "conflicts available on request" for commercials. Quote usage as category, media, territory, term and renewal.
Do not write "broadcast quality home studio" without the chain and room behind it. Do not attach audio files to a first email. Do not list individual commercial brands. Do not treat a perpetual worldwide buyout as a default. Do not sign away digital replica rights inside a general usage clause. Do not put your home address on the page.
Voice actor job market and outlook
Overall, the published occupation is actors: small, flat, intermittent, with a very wide hourly spread.
| Measure | Value |
|---|---|
| Actor jobs, 2025 | 67,500 |
| Projected employment, 2035 | 67,500 |
| Projected change, 2025-35 | 0% (little or no change), 0 jobs |
| Projected annual openings | ~6,300 |
| Typical entry-level education | Some college, no degree |
| Typical on-the-job training | Long term |
| Median hourly wage, May 2025 | $29.05 |
| Annual median wage | Not published; work is intermittent |
Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, actors, page last modified 27 August 2026, May 2025 wage data and 2025 to 2035 projections.
The published occupation is broader than the work you do
BLS puts self-employed workers at 23 percent of actors, theater companies and dinner theaters at 10 percent, accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping and payroll services at 8 percent, amusement parks and arcades at 7 percent, and educational services at 4 percent (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, actors, page last modified 27 August 2026).
May 2025 hourly medians across those settings were $29.92 in accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping and payroll services, $25.53 in theater companies and dinner theaters, $22.34 in educational services and $18.70 in amusement parks and arcades (same source).
That data is dominated by settings where almost no voice work happens, so it describes your occupation rather than your job. Quote it as such, rather than letting a client treat $29.05 an hour as your rate. Note too that the third-largest category is payroll services, which is how production work is administered.
What you can expect to earn as a voice actor
BLS publishes no annual median wage for actors, and the Handbook says why: the work is intermittent, so nobody can multiply an hourly figure into a year. Any site showing an annual voice actor salary has done that multiplication anyway, and the number is an invention.
Instead, BLS publishes the hourly spread, and it is very wide: a median of $29.05 in May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent under $16.50 an hour and the highest 10 percent above $143.68 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, actors, May 2025 wage data published 27 August 2026).
Four things move the number, and three belong on your resume. Capacity, because a booth you can be in within the hour beats a better read that takes two days to schedule. Genre mix, because commercial, animation, game, audiobook, e-learning and telephony pay on different structures. The usage grant, the largest single lever, since a one-year regional digital grant and a perpetual worldwide buyout for the same read are different businesses.
The fourth is union status. Under SAG-AFTRA the national initiation fee is $3,121, with annual base dues of $246.14 and work dues of 1.575 percent of covered earnings up to $1,000,000 (SAG-AFTRA, membership costs, page last updated 15 April 2026). Even so, those are real costs set against scale minimums, residuals and holding fees. Say plainly what you hold.
Key takeaways for a voice actor resume
- Put union status on the first line, exactly as it stands.
- Give the booking spec: chain, room, connection and delivery, with models named.
- State a measured noise floor and the standard you deliver to.
- Group credits by genre, strongest first, never chronologically.
- Write "conflicts available on request" instead of listing commercials.
- Quote usage as category, media, territory, term and renewal, with replica consent separate.
- One page, no photograph, no home address, reel linked in plain text.

Voice actor resume questions, answered
How long should a voice actor resume be?
One page. The reel is the portfolio and it is linked, not attached. If the credits will not fit, cut the weakest rather than adding a second page.
Do I need a home studio to work as a voice actor?
For most of the work now, yes. Remote sessions directed over Source-Connect or ipDTL are the normal booking, and a producer choosing between two equally good reads takes the one who can record this afternoon. State the chain, the treated room and the connections you host.
What technical standard should I say I deliver to?
Name a published one. For long-form narration, ACX requires files between -23dB and -18dB RMS, peaks under -3dB, a noise floor under -60dB RMS, room tone at head and tail, and one chapter per file (ACX, audio submission requirements, accessed 17 September 2026). A standard a client can check beats any adjective.
Should I list the commercials I have voiced?
No, not individually. "Conflicts available on request" is the whole commercial entry. Listing brands tells a competing advertiser which categories you are locked out of, and under the SAG-AFTRA Commercials Contract that exclusivity runs up to 21 months across seven 13-week holding fee cycles (SAG-AFTRA, accessed 17 September 2026).
How do I handle a client who wants to use my voice to train an AI model?
Treat it as a separate negotiation with its own consent and its own fee, never a line inside a general usage clause. SAG-AFTRA agreements require informed consent and separate compensation for digital replicas, with the 2025 Commercials Agreement requiring "clear and conspicuous consent" plus disclosure of intended uses (SAG-AFTRA, Artificial Intelligence, accessed 17 September 2026).
What do I put on a voice actor resume with no professional bookings?
The booking spec first, because it is true on day one and most working actors still do not write it. Then training with the coach named, then any recorded work in its proper format: student animation, independent games, community audio drama, volunteer audiobook work, demos built with a producer. Never invent a credit; voice casting is small and it gets checked.
