In short, an advertising director resume is a one to two page document that states the size of the media plan you signed for, the channels and flight dates inside it, and the approvals you personally held over the money.
However, most advertising director resumes are written as creative biographies. For example, award-winning campaigns, breakthrough ideas, bold repositioning of a category. Even so, all of it may be true and none of it answers the question the reader is holding, which is whether this person can be handed next year's budget and be trusted to commit it in writing.
Resume guide for an advertising director resume
Specifically, this guide and the corresponding advertising director resume example will cover:
- First, how to write an advertising director resume, section by section
- Next, why the media plan, not the campaign reel, is the section that gets read
- Then three adaptable summaries: planner, advertising manager and advertising director
- Also, how to write working spend, gross versus net, and your insertion order authority
- Finally, what the job market looks like and what you can expect to earn
How to write an advertising director resume
Overall, six blocks: contact header, summary, the media plan block, experience, skills, education and certifications. One page under six years, two pages once you have signed for more than one annual plan.
The media plan block sits directly under the summary because it is the fastest way to establish level in this occupation. Coordinators build flowcharts. Managers negotiate and place. Directors commit the company to a number in a signed document and then answer for what it delivered. Nothing on a conventional resume separates those three, and a campaign list obscures the difference in both directions.
SectionWhat it is answeringWhere it goes

Write your approval authority as a number, before you write anything else
An insertion order is a contract. Somebody's name goes on it, and that name carries a ceiling.
Write yours plainly: "drafted insertion orders for supervisor signature", "signed insertion orders to $250,000", or "sole signature on all insertion orders inside a board-approved $52 million advertising budget". Those are three different jobs, and only the third one is an advertising director in the sense most postings mean.
Then say who set the budget. Receiving an approved number and committing it is different from building the recommendation, defending it to a finance committee and being handed what you asked for. Both are worth writing accurately, and an interviewer will find out inside two questions which one you did.
Run the finished file through the free ATS resume checker before you send it. Advertising roles draw high application volume, so the first reader is usually a parser.
Choosing the best resume format for an advertising director resume
Reverse chronological, every time. A media career is read for continuity of scale: which budgets, in which channels, moving in which direction, and whether the numbers grew or the titles did.
Functional and skills-first layouts fail badly here, because they strip out the two things the reader is checking. A hybrid is acceptable only if the media plan block sits above the experience and the experience is still dated and in order.

Make use of a summary
In practice, four lines: your side of the desk, the annual working media you plan against, the channels, and the approval you hold.

By contrast, the right column can be verified in an hour by anyone who has done the job. The left column cannot be verified at all, which is why it reads as decoration rather than evidence.
Outline your advertising experience
Employer, side of the desk, city, dates, then the plan size on its own line, then three to five bullets. In addition, every bullet names a channel or a negotiation and carries a number.

Advertising Director, Crossbrook Home Goods, client side, Kansas City, MO, January 2022 to Present
Sign for a $47 million annual working media plan across nine channels inside a board-approved $52 million advertising budget; sole insertion order signature at any value within that budget.
Direct three agencies under one master services agreement and a team of six: two planners, one buyer, one ad operations analyst and two production managers.
Converted agency compensation from 15 percent gross billing commission to a fixed fee retainer of $2.1 million, releasing roughly $1.6 million a year back into working media.
Rebuilt the annual flighting from continuous presence to four dated flights, moving blended cost per thousand from $14.20 to $11.05 across three planning cycles.
Hold every buy to a 2 percent audience deficiency ceiling and clear make-goods before the next flight is released; post-buy delivery has averaged 103 percent of guaranteed impressions.
The media plan you signed for
This is the block almost nobody writes, and it is the one that decides whether a reader believes the title on your resume.
After all, an advertising director is hired to commit money in a document that a supplier can enforce. As a result, everything that matters about your experience is in the shape of that commitment: how much, in what, for how long, at what price against card, and whose name was on the order. In fact, six lines will carry all of it.
The plan size, and whether it is working or total. Working media is the money that actually buys audience. Non-working covers production, talent, research, agency fees and asset management. A $52 million advertising budget with $47 million of working media is a very different plan from a $52 million budget with $34 million of working media, and quoting the bigger number without saying which one it is will be caught by the first person who asks.
The channel list with flight dates. "Integrated multichannel" tells a reader nothing. National cable, connected television, streaming audio, paid search, paid social, retail media, out of home, print and local radio, planned in four dated flights, tells them exactly what you have bought and what you have not.
Advertising spend terms and order authority
Gross versus net. Rate card is gross. Traditional media has historically been transacted at 15 percent agency commission, so gross less commission is net, and a claim of "reduced advertising costs by 15 percent" that is really the commission line is the single most common misreading in this occupation. State which basis your numbers are on.
The insertion order authority. Draft, recommend, sign to a ceiling, or sign without one. Write the ceiling as a figure.
The budget authority behind it. Who approved the annual number, and did you build the recommendation or receive it?
Which side of the desk. Agency side you are recommending and placing against a client's approved budget, and your scale is the billings you touched. Client side you are the signature and the accountable owner. Say which, in every role. A reader who has to guess assumes the smaller one.
Adaptable resume media plan block example
Media plan signed for, 2026: $47.0 million working media inside a board-approved $52.0 million advertising budget, client side.
Channels: national cable and connected television, streaming audio, paid search, paid social, retail media, out of home, free standing inserts, local radio, sponsorship.
Flights: 2 March to 21 June, 6 July to 30 August, 14 September to 22 November, 24 November to 26 December.
Working to non-working: 82:18. Prior cycle 74:26.
Basis: all rates quoted net of agency commission; agency compensated on a $2.1 million fixed fee retainer, not gross billing.
Authority: sole insertion order signature at any value inside the approved budget; annual budget recommendation built by me and approved by the board in October.
Agencies directed: three under one master services agreement, media, creative production and retail media.
If you have never signed an insertion order, write the plan you did hold at the level you held it. For instance, a planner who maintained the flowchart for $4.2 million across three accounts, drafted the orders and reconciled the billing has a real and specific claim. Inflating that into ownership is the exaggeration this occupation catches fastest, because the follow-up question is simply who signed.
Build a snapshot of your key skills
Next, twelve to sixteen entries in four groups: planning, buying and negotiation, operations and reconciliation, and measurement. Keep platform logos to the last group; a director is not hired for a login.
Adaptable resume skills example
Planning: Annual media planning, Flighting and seasonality, Reach and frequency modeling, Channel mix and budget allocation, Working and non-working management
Buying and negotiation: Upfront and scatter negotiation, Rate card and net pricing, Master services agreements, Agency compensation models, Programmatic direct and private marketplace deals
Operations and reconciliation: Insertion order drafting and approval, Billing reconciliation and discrepancy resolution, Make-goods and audience deficiency units, Traffic and asset delivery, Contract compliance
Measurement: Post-buy analysis, Guaranteed impression delivery, Cost per thousand and cost per point, Brand lift study design, Third party verification and viewability
List your education and certifications
Degree first, then certifications with their issuing body and a certificate number where you have one, then the training that signals currency in the parts of media buying that change every year.

Choose the right layout and design
Also, single column, 11 or 12 point, clear headings, no photograph and no charts. It is tempting on an advertising resume to demonstrate craft through the document itself, and it is a mistake: applicant systems in large advertisers parse the file into a structured record before a human opens it, and two columns, text boxes and embedded graphics are exactly where the parse breaks.
Do
- State working media and total budget separately, and label which is which.
- Give the channel list and the flight dates.
- Write your insertion order ceiling as a figure.
- Say agency side or client side in every role.
- Quote rates on a stated basis, gross or net.
- Name the compensation model you negotiated with the agency.
- Put post-buy delivery against guarantee on the page, because almost nobody does.
Don’t
- Do not lead with awards; they belong in one line near the end.
- Do not write "managed a multimillion dollar budget" when the actual figure is a stronger claim.
- Do not present an agency's total billings as money you controlled.
- Do not quote a saving that is really the commission line without saying so.
- Do not list a platform you have logged into twice.
- Do not build the file in two columns for a corporate portal.
Advertising director job market and outlook
A small, well-paid occupation with steady replacement demand, and a pay distribution that separates the advertising side from the marketing side more sharply than most job titles suggest.
| Measure | Value |
|---|---|
| Employment, advertising, promotions and marketing managers, 2025 | 454,800 |
| Projected change, 2025 to 2035 | 6 percent, +27,900 |
| Projected annual openings | ~36,300 |
| Typical entry-level education | Bachelor's degree |
| Median annual wage, advertising and promotions managers, May 2025 | $133,660 |
| Median annual wage, the combined group, May 2025 | $165,780 |
A third of this occupation is self-employed, and that changes what the resume has to prove
Self-employed workers make up 35 percent of advertising and promotions managers, the single largest slice of the occupation, ahead of advertising, public relations and related services at 27 percent and information at 9 percent (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).
Pay tracks the setting rather than the title. In May 2025 the median for advertising and promotions managers was $217,430 in wholesale trade and $173,780 in management of companies and enterprises, against $133,550 in advertising and public relations services and an occupation median of $133,660 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).
Employment across advertising, promotions and marketing managers is projected to grow 6 percent between 2025 and 2035, an increase of 27,900 jobs, with about 36,300 openings a year on average over the decade (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025 to 2035 projections).
For your resume the consequence is direct. A large share of the people reading it are hiring a signature, either because they are a client with a budget and no internal media function, or because they are an agency proving to a client that someone accountable sits on the account. Write the plan and the authority, and the freelance and consulting years on your file stop looking like gaps and start looking like the pattern of the occupation.
Where these jobs sit:
| Setting | Share of employment | Median annual wage, May 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Self-employed workers | Not published | |
| Advertising, public relations and related services | $133,550 | |
| Information | $143,110 | |
| Management of companies and enterprises | $173,780 | |
| Wholesale trade | $217,430 |
What salary you can expect as an advertising director
First of all, advertising and promotions managers had a median annual wage of $133,660 in May 2025, and the combined advertising, promotions and marketing managers group had a median of $165,780 in the same cycle (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025). Similarly, marketing managers, the neighboring occupation inside the same Handbook profile, had a median of $166,790 (BLS, May 2025).
That gap of roughly $33,000 between the advertising side and the marketing side is the most useful number on this page when you are negotiating, because it is often a gap in scope rather than in seniority. Therefore, an advertising director who also owns pricing, product marketing or customer lifecycle work is doing a marketing manager's job with an advertising title, and the Handbook's own figures are the cleanest argument for saying so.
In practice, three things move you through the band. Plan size and signing authority come first, since the role exists to commit money. Setting comes second: wholesale trade and management of companies pay well above the occupation median, while advertising and public relations services, where most agency jobs sit, pays close to it. Lastly, third is what you can do with the non-working line. A director who has moved production, fees and asset management to release working media has a saving that is measurable, defensible and repeatable at the next employer, which is a stronger negotiating position than any campaign result.
Key takeaways for an advertising director resume
- First, lead with the plan you signed for, separating working media from total budget.
- Then list the channels with their flight dates rather than writing "integrated".
- In addition, write your insertion order ceiling as a figure, or say you drafted for signature.
- Say who approved the annual budget and whether you built the recommendation.
- Also, name your side of the desk in every role, agency or client.
- State whether rates are quoted gross or net, and never pass off commission as saving.
- Finally, put post-buy delivery against guarantee on the page; almost no competing file does.

Advertising director resume questions, answered
How long should an advertising director resume be?
Two pages once you have signed for a full annual plan more than once, one page before that. The second page earns its place when it carries a second plan with a different channel mix, a different budget scale or a different side of the desk. It does not earn its place as a longer award list.
Should I put the budget figure on the resume?
Yes, with the working and total split stated. Budget scale is the first thing every reader sorts on, and leaving it off does not read as discretion, it reads as a smaller number. If your employer treats the exact figure as confidential, give a band and say so: "annual working media in the $40 to $50 million range".
How do I show advertising results when sales closed the revenue?
Use the measures advertising is actually held to and name who owned the rest. Delivery against guaranteed impressions, cost per thousand and cost per point against plan, reach and frequency achieved, brand lift from a third party study, and share of voice are all legitimate and all verifiable. Pair each with the flight it came from, and leave the attribution argument for the interview.
Is agency experience or client experience worth more?
Neither, and trying to blur the two costs you. Agency side proves negotiation depth, volume and speed across many categories. Client side proves budget accountability, internal approval and living with the consequences for a full year. Most directors have both, and the resumes that read best say which years were which and what each taught them.
Do certifications matter for an advertising director?
Modestly, and mostly for currency. The Interactive Advertising Bureau's buying and planning and ad operations certifications are the recognized ones on the media side, and they are worth listing with a certificate number because a reader can check them. They do not substitute for a signed plan, but on a file that has been client side for six years they answer the unspoken question of whether you have kept up with how the money is transacted now.
What if my title was not advertising director?
Use the title you held and let the plan block establish the level. Media director, advertising manager, head of media, group media director and director of brand communications are all doing versions of this job at different scales. A reader who sees $47 million, nine channels, four flights and a sole signature will not be confused by the words above them.
