Application for Advertising Director, Harkness Outdoor Brands

Dear Ms. Tran-Whitfield,

I am applying for the Advertising Director post at Harkness Outdoor Brands. I currently sign for a $47 million annual working media plan across nine channels inside a board-approved $52 million advertising budget, as the sole insertion order signature, and I direct three agencies under one master services agreement. Your posting asks for someone who can hold the media contract as firmly as the idea, and that is the part of this job I have spent four years on.

The work I would most want to bring to Harkness is what we did to the non-working line. Crossbrook was compensating its media agency at 15 percent of gross billing, which meant the agency earned more whenever we spent more. I wrote a new master services agreement onto a $2.1 million fixed fee retainer with audit rights and a quarterly reconciliation, and that released roughly $1.6 million a year back into working media. Across the same three planning cycles I moved the plan from continuous presence to four dated flights, and blended cost per thousand fell from $14.20 to $11.05. Post-buy delivery over those flights has averaged 103 percent of guaranteed impressions, with make-goods cleared inside the flight rather than carried forward.

I noticed Harkness brought retail media buying in house last year while still running two separate rosters for creative production. That is close to the split Crossbrook had in 2022, and consolidating it under one agreement is where most of our saving came from. I would also look at the spring presence, which from the outside appears to run continuously from February through July; dated flighting was worth more to us than any rate negotiation in the same period.

I hold the IAB Digital Media Buying and Planning and Digital Ad Operations certifications, both current, and I have worked both sides of the desk: four years at Bellwether Media Group before eight at Crossbrook. I can start within a standard notice period and would be glad to walk through the flowchart and the post-buys in person. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,Lorena Escamilla-Pruitt

An advertising director cover letter tells the person approving the advertising budget how big a plan you sign for, what is in it, and what you last changed about the money.

The reader is usually a chief marketing officer or an agency managing director, and both want the same thing: someone they can hand a number to in October and not think about again until the quarterly review.

Put the plan and the signature in the first three lines

Almost every letter for this job opens on creative philosophy, and almost every reader of it is approving a budget.

Lead with the two facts a resume header does not make obvious at a glance: the working media you plan against, and whose name goes on the insertion order. "I sign for a $47 million annual working media plan across nine channels, as the sole insertion order signature inside a board-approved $52 million budget" does more than any paragraph about vision.

If you have not held that signature, say what you did hold. "I approve insertion orders to $250,000 and recommend everything above that" is precise and still establishes level. The discarded letters are the ones where a reader cannot tell.

What counts as evidence in an advertising letter

Advertising rarely closes the sale on its own, so a letter claiming the revenue reads as someone who has not yet argued with a finance director. Use the measures the function is held to.

Kind of evidenceWhat it looks like in a sentence

  • Plan scaleSigned for $47M of working media inside a board-approved $52M budget
  • Price against cardBought national cable and streaming at 14 percent below gross rate card
  • Delivery against guaranteePost-buy delivery averaged 103 percent of guaranteed impressions across eight flights
  • EfficiencyBlended cost per thousand from $14.20 to $11.05 over three planning cycles
  • Money releasedAgency compensation moved from 15 percent of gross billing to a $2.1M fixed fee, releasing $1.6M into working media
  • Contract disciplineCleared make-goods inside the flight, holding a 2 percent audience deficiency ceiling

Each carries a period and a basis. A figure with neither is what an experienced reader deletes before evaluating the rest.

Agency side and client side letters are not the same letter

Do

  • Client side, lead with the budget you sign for, the approval route above you and what you changed about the money.
  • Agency side, lead with the billings you handled, the number of accounts and categories, and the negotiations you ran yourself, since volume and speed are what an agency buys.
  • Either way, name one observable thing about the employer's advertising, and say plainly which years were agency and which were client.

Don’t

  • Do not present an agency's total billings as money you controlled; the follow-up question is always who signed.
  • Do not quote a saving that is really the commission line without saying so.
  • Do not spend a paragraph on a creative idea and half a sentence on its plan.
  • Do not promise cost reductions before you have seen the plan.
Expert tip

Most of this occupation is not on a payroll

Self-employed workers account for 35 percent of advertising and promotions managers, the largest single share of the occupation, ahead of advertising and public relations services at 27 percent (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).

Pay follows the setting. In May 2025 the median was $217,430 in wholesale trade and $173,780 in management of companies and enterprises, against an occupation median of $133,660, and employment across the wider group is projected to grow 6 percent between 2025 and 2035 with about 36,300 openings a year (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025 wage data and 2025 to 2035 projections).

So write contract years as engagements with plan sizes attached rather than apologizing for them. A company with no internal media function is shopping for one thing: someone who can be handed a budget and be accountable for it.

Length, format and sending it

One page, four paragraphs, 300 to 400 words. PDF unless the portal asks otherwise, named for you and the post: lorena-escamilla-pruitt-advertising-director-cover-letter.pdf.

Address a person. Marketing leadership is public on nearly every company site, and "Dear Hiring Manager" undercuts an otherwise specific letter.

Keep the figures identical to the ones on your resume. Our advertising director resume example uses the same plan, flights and numbers, so the two can be read side by side without a contradiction.

Key takeaways

  1. Open with the working media you sign for and the authority you hold over it.
  2. Name the channels and the flighting rather than writing "integrated".
  3. Give one negotiation or restructure with a figure, a basis and a period.
  4. Say which years were agency side and which were client side.
  5. Cite delivery against guarantee; almost no competing letter does.
  6. Address a named person and stay on one page.

Advertising director cover letter questions, answered

How long should an advertising director cover letter be?

One page, four paragraphs, 300 to 400 words. Running longer reads as someone who could not decide which number mattered most.

Should I name the budget figure in the letter?

Yes, split into working media and total. It is the fastest way to establish level, and withholding it reads as a smaller number rather than as discretion. If the figure is confidential, give a band and say so.

What do I write if I have never signed an insertion order?

Write the authority you did hold, as a figure. Drafting orders for signature, or approving to $75,000 under a media director, places you accurately. Inflating it is the exaggeration this occupation catches fastest: verifying it takes one phone call.

How is this different from a marketing manager letter?

A marketing manager's letter is about a plan and the number it was measured against. An advertising director's letter is about a contract: what was committed, in what channels, on what dates, at what price against card, and by whose signature. If your letter could be sent for either job unedited, it is not yet doing the advertising version.

Do I need to mention awards?

One line at most, and only for an award given to the plan rather than the execution. A media plan award says something about your judgement on allocation and flighting; a creative award says something about a team you briefed.
