Ms. Adaeze Fontaine Managing Partner Calder Bright Chicago, United States

Application for Creative Director, Calder Bright

Dear Ms. Fontaine,

I am applying for the Creative Director post at Calder Bright. I currently direct three teams and 22 people at a healthcare marketing agency, hold final creative sign-off across the portfolio, and have presented in 41 pitches, led 26 and won 15. Your posting describes a creative department that wins work and then loses it in client review, which is close to the problem I was hired to fix three years ago.

The work I would point to is a two-brand pharmaceutical assignment worth $3.2 million in annual fee. I led that pitch, presented the creative rationale myself rather than handing it to an art director, and we won it against two holding company agencies. It has been retained four years and the client has since brought a second brand to us. I would also rather tell you about the national retail pharmacy account we lost on price after two rounds, because a record with no losses in it is not a record.

The part of the job I suspect you are actually buying is the second half. I wrote the approval tiers that decide which work I sign alone, which goes to the managing partner, and which cannot be shown to a client before regulatory review. About 40 concepts a year go to a medical, legal and regulatory panel that I attend and present at personally, and average client review rounds across the portfolio have fallen from four to two. The line I am proudest of is a campaign I kept intact through that panel by conceding the headline and defending the visual idea.

I hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts in visual communication design from the University of Illinois Chicago, completed the marketing leadership executive program at Kellogg School of Management in 2022, and the portfolio link is on the attached resume. I am available at six weeks' notice, and thank you for reading.

Sincerely, Hollis Terrazas-Nwosu

Summary

A creative director cover letter names what you presented, who bought it, and the approval chain the work cleared before it ran. This guide gives you a full adaptable letter, the openings that work, what to write when you have never led a pitch, and why the campaign you protected through a hostile review is the strongest paragraph you can send.

Creative Director cover letter examples by experience level

A creative director cover letter is a one page letter naming what you pitched, what was bought, and what the work cleared before it reached an audience.

That is narrower than most creative letters, on purpose. The reader already has your portfolio. What it cannot show is whether you sold the work, what you were allowed to approve, and whether the version that ran was the version you presented.

Expert Tip

Give the pitch record as three counts, not as an adjective

The sentence doing the most work in a creative director letter is a plain arithmetic one: presented, led, won.

"I have presented in 41 pitches, led 26 and won 15" gives your exposure, authority and conversion in eleven words, and it is checkable, which is why it is believed. "Award-winning creative leader with a proven track record" is none of those things, and every other letter in the folder contains it.

Give the value of what you won as fee or retainer, not as the client's media budget. A creative director describing a $40 million campaign is usually describing money somebody else spent, and an agency principal will notice.

Then name the retention. An account that renewed three times means the promise you made in the room survived the work.

The right column is what a managing partner reads out to a colleague. The left is what they scroll past, not because it is untrue but because thirty other letters say it.

Write the governance paragraph without sounding like a compliance officer

The third paragraph is where most creative directors go silent or go dull. Silent reads as someone who has only made work in easy categories; dull is a list of process. Write governance as authorship instead: you designed the approval chain, or you learned to move work through it without the idea being sanded off.

Do

Give your sign-off scope as a bounded sentence and name who can overturn you. Say how much work goes through review in a year and how much comes back. Name one piece you protected and what you conceded for it. Use the real name of the panel, and say whether you attend it yourself.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not imply authorship of work you directed at a distance. Do not quote the client's media spend as your budget. Do not hide the losses. Do not describe the approval process as an obstacle you tolerate, because the reader usually owns it.

One detail separates people who have worked in regulated categories from people who have not: naming the reviewer. Prescription medicine promotion is reviewed by the Food and Drug Administration's Office of Prescription Drug Promotion, which issues compliance letters where a promotional communication is false or misleading (U.S. Food and Drug Administration, accessed September 2026), and national advertising is open to challenge at the National Advertising Division, a unit of BBB National Programs whose fast-track route resolves a case in 20 business days (BBB National Programs, accessed September 2026). One clause is enough.

What to write when you have presented but never led

Write the smallest complete sale you have made, at the scale it happened: an internal pitch for budget, a brand platform argued for against an incumbent agency, a campaign the client had declined that you got reopened. Each involves presenting unbought work to someone who could refuse it, which is the skill in question.

Then be exact about the edge of your authority now, because precision reads as confidence. "I hold sign-off on layouts and copy but not on media commitment" is stronger than any vague claim of creative leadership, and it survives the interview.

Statistical insight

A wide band, and most of the occupation is not salaried

Art directors, the closest published occupation to creative director, had a median annual wage of $114,850 in May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent under $64,900 and the highest 10 percent over $213,050 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025). Employment stood at about 140,200 in 2025 and is projected to grow 4 percent between 2025 and 2035, with roughly 12,200 openings a year, and 62 percent were self-employed (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025 wage data and 2025 to 2035 projections).

A band that wide and a workforce that freelance mean the title places you nowhere, and the salaried post you are writing to is scarcer than the job boards suggest. The pitch record and the sign-off scope tell a reader which end of the band you belong at, which is why both belong in the first paragraph.

Length, format and sending it

One page, four paragraphs, 300 to 400 words. PDF unless the portal asks otherwise. Address a named person. The executive creative director or managing partner is nearly always findable, and a letter about creative authority opening "Dear Hiring Manager" undercuts its own argument.

Keep every number identical to the one on your resume. Our creative director resume example uses the same figures as the letter above.

Key takeaways

  1. Open with remit, headcount and the pitch record as three counts.
  2. Give fee or retainer value, never the client's media budget.
  3. Name the retention of what you won, and one loss.
  4. Write the approval chain as something you designed, not something you endured.
  5. Name one piece of work you protected and what you conceded.
  6. One page, four paragraphs, addressed to a named person.

Creative director cover letter questions, answered

How long should a creative director cover letter be?

One page, four paragraphs, 300 to 400 words. The space goes on the pitch and the approval chain, because a resume compresses each into a line and a portfolio cannot show either.

Should I attach a portfolio or a case study to the letter?

Link, do not attach. One live link in the closing line, open or with the password next to it. Agency inboxes reject large attachments and a principal will not email you for access.

Is it a mistake to mention pitches I lost?

No, it is the fastest way to be believed. A letter reporting only wins reads as an edited one. Name a loss in a clause, without blame and without explanation, and every other figure in the letter becomes credible.

What if I am moving from agency to in-house, or the reverse?

Change which half carries the weight. In-house readers care about brand stewardship and governance, so lead with the approval chain. Agency readers care about conversion, so lead with the pitch record and the fee. Only the order changes.

How do I write this letter without sounding like I am claiming my team's work?

Use verbs of direction rather than verbs of making, and give the team size in the same sentence. "I directed a team of nine on it" reads better than "I created it" and removes the question the reader would otherwise hold throughout. Where you did make something, say which part.
