Summary

A 3D animator resume is a one to two page document whose job is to support a reel. It names the productions, the shots you personally animated, the pipeline stage you owned and the software you use by version. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the shot breakdown most applicants leave out, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook.

3D Animator resume examples by experience level

In short, a 3D animator resume is a one to two page document whose only real job is to support a reel. The reel is the application. The resume, however, is the document that tells a supervisor which parts of the reel were yours.

That is not a small distinction. After all, a reel shows finished frames, and finished frames are the work of a department. For example, the animator, the modeler, the rigger, the lighter and the compositor all appear in the same two hundred frames. A supervisor watching your reel is asking one question throughout: what did this person actually do? If the resume and the breakdown do not answer it, the safe assumption is the smaller answer.

Resume guide for a 3D animator resume

Specifically, this guide and the corresponding 3D animator resume example will cover:

  • First of all, how to write a 3D animator resume, section by section
  • Then, why a shot breakdown belongs alongside the reel, and what goes in each line
  • In addition, three adaptable summaries: junior animator, character animator and animation supervisor
  • Also, how to name software honestly, by version, without padding the list
  • Finally, what the job market looks like and what you can expect to earn

How to write a 3D animator resume

Overall, six sections: contact header with the reel link, summary, credits and shot breakdown, experience, software and pipeline skills, education and training. One page while the credit list is short, two once it needs grouping. The reel link sits in the header because it is the first thing a supervisor opens, and the breakdown sits high because it is what makes the reel readable.

SectionWhat it is answeringWhere it goes
Reel link and passwordCan I watch this in ten seconds?Header, as a plain URL
Credits and shot breakdownWhich of these frames were this person's?Directly under the summary
ExperienceWho employed them, in what seat, how long?Reverse chronological
Software and pipelineCan they sit at our stations on Monday?Grouped by discipline, with versions
Education and trainingWhere did the fundamentals come from?Last, unless you graduated this year
Expert Tip

Put the reel link and the password in the contact header as plain text

A reel that cannot be opened was not watched. Write the URL out in full so it survives being printed, forwarded or pasted into a tracking system, and put the password on the same line, not in a separate email.

Keep one reel under two minutes with your strongest work in the first fifteen seconds. If you have specialized reels, a character reel and a creature reel for instance, name them separately rather than hoping a reviewer scrubs to the part that matters.

Then add one line: "Shot breakdown on the same page as the reel." A supervisor who knows it exists will look for it.

Run the finished file through the ATS resume checker before you send it. Large studios and game publishers push applications into a tracking system before a human opens them, and a resume built as a graphic comes back empty.

Choosing the best resume format for a 3D animator resume

Reverse chronological, single column, plain text. Generally, one page for your first few credits, two once the credit list is long enough to group by production type.

Animation is one of the few fields where people design the resume itself; however, it is a bad trade. The reel is where supervisors judge craft; the resume, in contrast, is where a coordinator checks dates, seats and software against a schedule. Consequently, two columns and a rendered background make that check slower, and slower is the only thing this document can do wrong.

Similarly, functional and skills-first formats fail badly here. A supervisor reads a credit list for continuity: which productions, which seat, how long, and whether the work got harder.

Three details there are doing work. Above all, the job title states the seat you are applying for, not the one you hold. In addition, you write the reel URL out with the password beside it. The city matters because a supervisor filling a twelve-week seat around a building and a workstation wants to know whether you are already in it.

Make use of a summary

Four lines: your seat, the productions or years behind you, the pipeline stage you own, and one specific thing you have animated that is harder than it sounds.

Character animator adaptable resume summary example

3D character animator with six years across an animated feature, two episodic seasons and a game cinematic, working in Maya 2025 and Blender 4.2. Own blocking through final polish on creature and quadruped performance; 96 shots and 11 minutes 40 seconds of screen time credited, including a 22-second continuous creature run cycle over uneven terrain that shipped without a retake. Work fluently with rigs I did not build and file rig notes that riggers act on rather than argue with.

Animation supervisor adaptable resume summary example

Animation supervisor with thirteen years in character animation and five leading a team of nine through blocking, polish and handoff on a 96-minute animated feature. Set the shot assignment and quota model that carried 1,340 shots to final, cut the average shot from four review rounds to two and a half, and still animate the sequences nobody else wants. Fluent in Maya 2025, Blender 4.2 and Unreal Engine 5.5, and comfortable owning the boundary where animation hands to lighting and effects.

Indeed, a supervisor can check the right column against the reel. The left column cannot, however, and a supervisor who cannot check a claim discounts it.

Outline your animation experience

Adaptable resume employment history example

Character Animator, Fathom Light Studios, Burbank, CA, March 2021 to Present

Animate character and creature performance on feature and episodic work in Maya 2025; 96 shots and 11 minutes 40 seconds credited to date.

Own blocking through final polish on the quadruped creature in 41 shots on "The Tin Orchard", including a 22-second continuous run cycle over uneven terrain that finaled without a retake. Rigging, lookdev and effects by other departments.

Hold a quota of 5 to 7 finaled shots a week and average 2.4 review rounds per shot against a department average of 3.6.

Hand scenes to lighting with published alembic caches, a shot note and a named version; wrote the Python scene checker the department runs before every publish.

Sit in weekly rig reviews and file written rig notes; 23 of 31 notes on the current creature rig were taken up before the sequence opened.

The shot breakdown: what was yours, on what shot, at which pipeline stage

In fact, this is what turns a reel into an application, and most animators leave it to chance. Six things carry a breakdown line.

The production and what it was. Name it and say what format it was: an animated feature, an episodic season, a game cinematic, a commercial spot, a previsualization package, a short. A supervisor reads format as a proxy for the constraints you worked under. Feature animation is a long schedule with a high bar and many review rounds; episodic is a shorter schedule with a fixed date and a quota; game cinematics are engine work with realtime constraints and a different sense of what final means.

The shot and its length. Give the shot code if you are allowed to, and give the length in seconds. Screen time is the unit this industry counts in, and "34 shots, 4 minutes 12 seconds" is something a coordinator can turn into a schedule estimate. A shot count alone is ambiguous: a 24-frame cutaway and a 500-frame continuous performance are both one shot.

What was yours and what was the team's. Write both halves. "Animation by me; rig, lookdev, lighting and comp by others" is not a weakness, it is how the work is organized, and stating it makes the rest of the claim believable. The failure mode supervisors watch for is the finished frame with no statement of contribution.

The pipeline stage you own. Animation is a chain of named stages and people are hired into one of them: modeling, rigging, layout, blocking and animation, lighting, lookdev, effects, compositing. Some animators own a stage end to end, some a slice of one. Write which. "Blocking through final polish" is a different hire from "polish only on approved blocking", and both differ from "layout and camera". If you have worked across stages, list them as separate rows with separate shot counts.

Software versions and animation handoffs

The software, by version, and what you did in it. Maya, Blender, Houdini, ZBrush and Unreal Engine sit on almost every animator's resume, and the bare list has stopped meaning anything. Give the version you used in production, not the newest one you have opened, and attach the stage to the tool: "Maya 2025, character performance", "Houdini 20.5, crowd setup on two sequences", "ZBrush 2024, blendshape sculpts only". An honest short list beats a long one, because the long one invites a test.

What you received and what you handed on. Name the department upstream and the one downstream, and say what crossed the line: an approved layout in, published caches and a shot note out. This is what separates an animator who can be dropped into a production from one who has only worked alone. If you have numbers, use them: failed handoffs, republished scenes, notes turned around in a day.

Adaptable resume shot breakdown example

"The Tin Orchard", animated feature, 96 minutes. 41 shots, 6 minutes 04 seconds. Quadruped creature performance, blocking through final polish. Maya 2025 on a rig built by the rigging department; lookdev, lighting, effects and compositing by others. Longest shot 22 seconds continuous, finaled without a retake. Handed to lighting as published alembic caches with a written shot note.

"Pale Horizon", episodic series, season 2, 10 episodes. 38 shots, 3 minutes 51 seconds. Bipedal character dialogue and acting, blocking and spline only; polish by the senior animation team. Maya 2025. Held a quota of 6 finaled shots a week across a 14-week window.

"Orrery", game cinematic, 4 minutes 30 seconds total runtime. 17 shots, 1 minute 45 seconds. Realtime character blocking and camera in Unreal Engine 5.5, exported from Maya 2025; retargeting and cloth simulation by others.

"Winterline", commercial spot, 60 seconds. Full spot, solo animator. Blender 4.2, blocking through polish, with layout and camera also mine. Client revisions handled directly.

Finally, write the breakdown once, keep it beside the reel, and put a one-line version of each credit on the resume itself.

Build a snapshot of your key skills

Then, ten to fourteen entries in four groups: animation craft, software with versions, pipeline and technical, and adjacent stages.

Adaptable resume skills example

Animation craft: Character performance and acting, Quadruped and creature locomotion, Body mechanics, Facial animation and lip sync, Camera and layout, Blocking to spline workflow

Software: Maya 2025, Blender 4.2, Unreal Engine 5.5, Houdini 20.5, ZBrush 2024, Nuke 15.1 (review only)

Pipeline and technical: Alembic and USD publishing, Autodesk Flow Production Tracking, Perforce, Deadline render submission, Python scripting for scene checks and playblast tools

Adjacent stages: Previsualization, Motion capture cleanup, Rig testing and written rig notes

Two rules keep this section useful. Equally, do not list a tool you would not want to be tested on, and mark limited use as limited so the limit is your claim, not a reviewer's discovery.

List your education and certifications

Degree, school, year, then the training specific to this trade. Animation hires on demonstrated work, so education sits near the bottom unless you graduated this year, in which case it moves up and carries your student film.

Adaptable resume education and training example

Bachelor of Fine Arts, Animation and Illustration, San Jose State University, San Jose, CA, 2018

Training: Animation Mentor, Character Animation track, completed 2019. Houdini crowd fundamentals, SideFX certified training, 2023. Unreal Engine cinematic production, Epic Games online learning, 2024.

Student and personal work: "Ninth Bell", 4-minute animated short, sole animator and director, 2018. Screened at two regional festivals.

Note: the Bureau of Labor Statistics gives a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level education for special effects artists and animators, the occupational category that covers 3D animation (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).

Choose the right layout and design

Single column, plain type at 10 to 12 point, clear headings, no photograph, no rendered background. Save as PDF, named for yourself and the seat: priyanka-raval-character-animator-2026.pdf.

Do

Put the reel URL and its password in the header as plain text. Give shot counts with the screen time in minutes and seconds. State the pipeline stage you own in the industry's own words. Name software with the version you worked in. Say what other departments did on the same shots. Link a full breakdown page beside the reel.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not design the resume itself; the reel is where craft is judged. Do not list a production without saying what you did on it. Do not claim a shot a supervisor could check with the studio. Do not put twenty software logos where a reviewer expects a version number. Do not write "all aspects of the pipeline".

3D animator job market and outlook

In short, a small occupation with flat employment, most of its workforce self-employed, and a wide pay spread. That combination, therefore, decides how you must write the resume.

Statistical insight

Nearly two thirds of this occupation works for itself

Self-employed workers made up 63 percent of employment in special effects artists and animators in 2025, with motion picture and video industries at 10 percent, software publishers at 7 percent, computer systems design at 4 percent and advertising and public relations at 2 percent (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025).

That is the most important number on this page. Where most people are hired per project rather than per role, there is no internal record of your work for anyone to consult. The reel and the breakdown are the record, and in this trade they are the application, not supporting material for one.

The occupation is also projected to change by 0 percent between 2025 and 2035, with about 4,200 openings a year (BLS, 2025-35 projections). Every opening is contested, and the only filter a supervisor can apply quickly is specificity. "41 shots, 6 minutes 04 seconds, quadruped performance, blocking through final polish" survives it. "Worked on an animated feature" does not.

What salary you can expect as a 3D animator

To begin with, the median annual wage for special effects artists and animators was $102,030 a year, or $49.06 an hour, as of May 2025. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $58,600 and the highest 10 percent more than $177,110 (BLS, May 2025).

That spread of more than three to one is not mostly about talent. Specifically, it tracks the industry you bill into. For instance, software publishers paid a median of $127,670 in May 2025 against $100,990 in motion picture and video industries and $86,290 in advertising and public relations (BLS, May 2025). The same skill is worth substantially more inside a games or software company than inside an agency, and animators usually find that out by accident rather than by planning.

Because 63 percent of the occupation is self-employed, most animators quote rather than negotiate. In particular, two things move a quote: the credit list, which is what the breakdown is for, and your ability to say what a shot costs in days, which comes from having counted your own finaled shots per week. That number, therefore, belongs on the resume and in the first conversation about rate.

Key takeaways for a 3D animator resume

  1. Above all, treat the resume as the index to a reel, and put the reel URL and password in the header as plain text.
  2. Also keep a shot breakdown next to the reel: production, format, shot count, screen time in minutes and seconds.
  3. Moreover, say what was yours and what other departments did on the same frames.
  4. In addition, name the pipeline stage you own in the industry's own words, and list separate stages separately.
  5. Similarly, give software versions you worked in, and keep the list short enough to be tested on.
  6. Finally, describe the handoff: what you received, what you published, and what broke.
  7. Do not design the resume. Design the reel.

3D animator resume questions, answered

How long should a 3D animator resume be?

One page until the credit list genuinely needs two, which for most animators is around six or seven productions. The reel carries the craft argument, so a long resume rarely does work the breakdown page could not do better.

Do I still need a resume if I have a reel?

Yes. The reel shows finished frames, which are made by a department. The resume and the breakdown say which frames were yours, which seat you sat in and which stage you owned. In an occupation where 63 percent of workers are self-employed (BLS, 2025), that attribution is the only thing standing between your work and someone else's.

What goes in a shot breakdown?

One line per shot or group of shots: the production and its format, the length in seconds, what you personally animated, the pipeline stage you owned, the software and version, and what other departments contributed. Keep it on the page with the reel.

How do I show experience with no professional credits?

Write student and personal work as work. Give the short film its runtime, say you were sole animator, give the shot count and the software, and name any festival that screened it. Then add anything done on a real schedule with the same breakdown discipline. An honest, specific first credit list reads better than one padded with work you watched someone else do.

Should I list every software package I have touched?

No. List what you use in production, by version, with the stage attached, and mark limited use as limited. A reviewer faced with a wall of logos picks the least likely one and asks about it.

Which industry pays 3D animators best?

Software publishers, by a clear margin: a May 2025 median of $127,670, against $103,390 in computer systems design, $100,990 in motion picture and video industries and $86,290 in advertising and public relations (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).
