Summary

Information technology is a category, not a job. The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes ten occupations inside it, hired by different managers against different tests, and two of them are moving in opposite directions. This guide shows you how to pick one before you write a line, gives three adaptable versions of the same career, and carries current BLS pay and outlook for the whole group.

Information Technology resume examples by experience level

In short, an information technology resume is a one to two page document written for one named occupation inside the IT field, not for the field itself.

Indeed, that sentence is the whole guide. "Information technology" is a category the Bureau of Labor Statistics uses to group ten separate occupations, each with its own wages, education requirements and ten-year projections. Nobody is hired into the category. Instead, a manager hires them into one of the ten, filling one seat and reading your file for evidence about that seat.

For example, the two ends of the group show how far apart those seats sit. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects information security analysts to grow 21 percent from 2025 to 2035 while it projects computer support specialists to decline 3 percent over the same decade (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections, published 27 August 2026). That is a 24 percentage point divergence inside one group, and a resume addressed to the group cannot speak to either end of it.

Resume guide for an information technology resume

Specifically, this guide and the corresponding information technology resume example will cover:

  • First of all, how to write an information technology resume, section by section
  • Then, how to choose which of the ten published IT occupations you are applying as
  • Three adaptable summaries, following one career through three of them
  • Also, what a generalist history is good for, and what it is not
  • Finally, what the group's job market looks like and what you can earn

How to write an information technology resume

Overall, six sections: contact header with a named occupation in the title line, summary, technical skills grouped for that occupation, experience, education and certifications. Generally, one page for your first five years, two once you have run production systems with an availability number attached.

In fact, the order is the same as every technical resume. What changes is that you write every section for one target occupation rather than all ten, and the first place a reader checks is the title line.

SectionWhat it is answeringWhere it goes
Title lineWhich of the ten occupations is this file for?Directly under your name, before anything else
SummaryWhat scale of that work, in what setting, with what result?Three or four lines
Technical skillsDo the named systems match the seat being filled?Grouped, immediately under the summary
ExperienceWhat did you run, at what scale, and what changed?Reverse chronological, with numbers
CertificationsWhich vendor and which exam version? With education, authority named
Expert Tip

Write the target occupation at the top of the page before you write anything else

Open a blank file and type one line: the BLS occupation title you are applying as. Then write the rest of the resume underneath it and delete anything that is not evidence for that line.

This is uncomfortable, because most people in information technology genuinely do several of those jobs in a week. A three-person department patches servers on Tuesday, resets passwords on Wednesday and reviews firewall rules on Thursday. The instinct is to put all of it on the page so no door is closed.

The reader is choosing between you and eleven other files, several of which name the exact occupation in the header. A file that offers everything reads as a file that has not decided.

Keep the breadth. Move it. It belongs in the experience bullets as evidence, not in the title line as a menu.

Run the finished file through the ATS resume checker before you submit. IT postings draw high volumes, and applicant systems parse them into a structured record before anyone reads them.

Choosing the best resume format for an information technology resume

Reverse chronological, then, single column, with a technical skills block near the top. Similarly, one page for your first five years, two once you have production ownership worth describing.

However, the functional format tempts people whose titles never matched what they did. It fails here anyway. IT hiring managers read for continuity of systems: what you ran, for how long, at what scale, and what broke while you had it.

If your titles were vague, therefore, fix the title, not the format. "IT Technician" that meant server and network administration can be written as "IT Technician (systems and network administration)".

For instance, the right column names an occupation, a sector and a scale in one line. The wrong column, on the other hand, names a category. "IT Professional" is not a job any manager is filling, and no applicant tracking search looks for it.

Make use of a summary

In short, three or four lines: the occupation you are applying as, the scale you have run it at, one measured result, and the credential a reader expects for that occupation.

Entry-level information technology adaptable resume summary example

Mid-level information technology adaptable resume summary example

Systems administrator with four years running Windows Server, Active Directory, VMware and Microsoft 365 for a 610-user insurance carrier across two data centers, holding monthly patch compliance above 97 percent and cutting unplanned outage minutes from 512 to 168 a year. Targeting network and computer systems administrator postings specifically, not information technology in general. Hold CompTIA Security+ and Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate.

Senior information technology adaptable resume summary example

Information security analyst with eight years in information technology, the last two building a security program for a 610-user insurance carrier: vulnerability management, quarterly phishing simulation, incident response and the remediation plan behind an annual external penetration test. Moved from user support to systems administration to security on purpose, and rewrote the resume for the occupation each time. Hold CISSP from ISC2 and CompTIA Security+.

Right vs wrong: the same information technology summary, twice

Moreover, a manager can match the right column to an open seat in four seconds. However, a manager has to decode the left column first, and one reading forty files will not do it.

Sole security analyst for a 610-user insurance carrier with two data centers, 46 Windows Server instances and a policy platform holding 214,000 active policies.

Built the vulnerability management cycle from nothing: monthly authenticated scanning, a triage standard agreed with the systems team, and a remediation service level by severity. Externally exposed high and critical findings fell from 214 to 31 across three quarterly cycles.

Run quarterly phishing simulation for all 610 users. Click rate fell from 18 percent to 6 percent over five rounds, and reporting of suspicious mail rose from 31 to 208 messages a quarter.

Wrote and now exercise the incident response plan: 4 tabletop exercises and one real containment of a compromised vendor account, closed in 2 hours 40 minutes with no policyholder data accessed.

Decide which of the ten published IT occupations this resume is for, and say so in the title line

The Handbook's computer and information technology group page lists ten occupations, with a group median annual wage of $109,470 in May 2025 and about 280,000 projected annual openings, and describes the group as projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations from 2025 to 2035 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025 wages and 2025-35 projections). Here, then, is the group, with what a resume for each one has to prove.

What the ten IT occupations mean for you

Three things follow, and together they are the rule this page exists to give you.

The title line names one occupation. Not two, not a slash: "Network and Computer Systems Administrator", not "IT Systems and Security Professional". If you are applying for two occupations, you need two files.

The skills block is built for that occupation. A support specialist file groups skills around ticketing, endpoint tooling and the identity platform. An administrator file groups them around server operating systems, virtualization, backup and monitoring. A security analyst file groups them around scanners, the SIEM and the frameworks. Same person, three different lists.

The generalist history is evidence, not a menu. Write it as support for the chosen occupation. If you are applying as an administrator, the years on the service desk are why you know what the estate actually breaks on. Say that. Do not list the service desk work as a parallel qualification, because the moment a reader cannot tell which job you want, they stop working out which job you would be good at.

Adaptable resume title line and skills block example

Rashad Fontenot

Information Security Analyst, insurance, 610 users, two data centers

Security operations: Authenticated vulnerability scanning, remediation service levels by severity, phishing simulation, incident response and tabletop exercise

Platforms and tooling: Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, Microsoft Sentinel, Tenable Nessus, Fortinet firewalls, Active Directory and Entra ID

Frameworks: CIS Critical Security Controls, NIST Cybersecurity Framework

Background carried forward: four years of Windows Server, VMware and Active Directory administration on the same estate, which is why remediation plans agreed here are ones the systems team can actually run

Build a snapshot of your key information technology skills

Twelve to eighteen entries in three or four groups, with the headings chosen by the target occupation rather than by convention. Name versions where a version means something: Windows Server 2022 rather than Windows Server. And do not list a technology you would not want to be asked about for ten minutes, because in a technical screen you will be.

Adaptable resume skills example

Operating systems and virtualization: Windows Server 2019 and 2022, Windows 11, Ubuntu Server 22.04, VMware vSphere 7, Hyper-V

Identity and productivity: Active Directory, Entra ID, Group Policy, Microsoft 365, Intune

Network: Meraki switching and wireless, Fortinet FortiGate firewalls, VLAN and VPN configuration, DNS and DHCP

Security: Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, Microsoft Sentinel, Tenable Nessus, CIS Critical Security Controls

Operations: Veeam backup and restore testing, PRTG monitoring, PowerShell scripting, ServiceNow ticketing

List your education and certifications

Degree first if you have one, then certifications with the issuing body and the year.

Education requirements differ across the group, and the Handbook says so. Nine of the ten occupations on the group page list a bachelor's degree as typical entry-level education, computer and information research scientists list a master's degree, and computer support specialists are the exception the Handbook describes as entry requirements varying (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, computer and information technology occupations). In particular, that row is why the support desk remains the most common way in without a degree, and why the certification block matters most on those files.

Name the exam version when there is one. For example, CompTIA's current Network+ exam is version N10-009, launched 20 June 2024 (CompTIA, retrieved 16 September 2026). Therefore, writing "CompTIA Network+ (N10-009)" tells a reader you passed the current version.

Adaptable resume education and certifications example

Bachelor of Science, Information Technology, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA, 2019

Certifications:

Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), ISC2, earned 2025

CompTIA Security+, CompTIA, earned 2022

Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate, Microsoft, earned 2023

CompTIA Network+ (N10-009), CompTIA, earned 2021

CompTIA A+, CompTIA, earned 2019

Choose the right layout and design

In addition, use a single column, 11 point body type, plain headings, no photograph, no skill rating bars. After all, two-column templates and graphics are where applicant systems misread technical resumes, and a bar claiming 80 percent on Active Directory tells a reader nothing they can check.

Do

Put one BLS occupation title in the line under your name. Build the skills groups for that occupation. Give every bullet a named system and a number. Write the estate size before the bullets so the numbers have a scale. Keep a second file for the second occupation you apply to.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not write "IT Professional", "IT Generalist" or "Technology Specialist" as your title line; none is a seat anyone is filling. Do not list every technology you have touched as though breadth were the claim. Do not hide a service desk background, and do not present it as a parallel qualification either.

Information technology job market and outlook

The Handbook publishes computer and information technology as ten occupations; for this reason, there is no single outlook number for a career you describe only as IT.

Statistical insight

Two occupations in one group, moving in opposite directions

Information security analysts held 192,900 jobs in 2025 and are projected to grow 21 percent through 2035, a change of +40,600, with about 14,100 openings a year. Computer support specialists held 903,100 jobs in 2025 and are projected to decline 3 percent over the same decade, a change of -24,300, with about 48,700 openings a year (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections). Both sit inside the same group, and both are what people mean when they say they work in IT.

Read the openings column alongside the growth column. Support specialists are shrinking and still produce more than three times as many annual openings, because the occupation is nearly five times larger and replacement demand dominates. A declining occupation is not a closed one. The divergence tells you these are two labor markets with two hiring tests, and one resume addressed to both will lose in both.

Sector varies by occupation too. Information security analysts worked mainly in computer systems design and related services, 22 percent of employment, and finance and insurance, 17 percent, in 2025, while network and computer systems administrators sat at 16 percent in computer systems design and 13 percent in educational services (BLS, 2025).

What salary you can expect in information technology

In other words, there is no median wage for "information technology" as a job, because the Bureau of Labor Statistics does not publish one. Instead, it publishes a group median annual wage of $109,470 for computer and information technology occupations as of May 2025, with ten occupational medians underneath it (BLS, May 2025).

Specifically, those ten medians run from $140,300 for computer and information research scientists down to $62,890 for computer support specialists, with information security analysts at $129,180, computer systems analysts at $105,850 and network and computer systems administrators at $99,130 (BLS, May 2025). Choosing which number you negotiate against is the same decision as choosing your title line, and you should make it before the first interview rather than during the offer call.

Likewise, within an occupation the spread is wide enough to matter on its own. Information security analysts earned less than $75,090 in the lowest 10 percent and more than $199,850 in the highest 10 percent as of May 2025, and computer support specialists split into two published figures, network support specialists at $76,220 and user support specialists at $61,860 (BLS, May 2025).

The management ceiling above all ten is computer and information systems managers, with a median annual wage of $175,140 in May 2025 and projected 16 percent growth through 2035 (BLS, May 2025 and 2025-35 projections). The route there runs through having been visibly excellent at one of the ten rather than adequate at several.

Key takeaways for an information technology resume

  1. Write one BLS occupation title under your name before you write anything else.
  2. Consequently, build the skills groups for that occupation, not for the field.
  3. Keep the generalist history, but write it as evidence for the chosen occupation.
  4. Also give every bullet a named system, a version where it matters, and a number.
  5. State the estate size before the bullets so the numbers have a scale.
  6. Above all, keep a separate file for each occupation you apply to.
  7. Finally, negotiate against the occupational median, not the group median.

Information technology resume questions, answered

Can I write one information technology resume for every job I apply to?

No, and it is the most expensive mistake in this field. The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes ten occupations inside the computer and information technology group, hired by different managers against different tests. Write the file once properly, then keep one variant per occupation. The experience section barely changes; the title line, the summary and the skills groupings do.

What if my job really was all ten of those things?

It probably was; small IT departments are like that everywhere. The question is not what you did, it is what you are applying for. Pick the occupation you want next, put it in the title line, and use the rest as evidence for it. Breadth described as support for a choice reads as strength; breadth described as a list reads as indecision.

How long should an information technology resume be?

One page for your first five years. Two once you have production ownership with an estate size, an availability figure or a compliance number attached. Three pages is a portfolio, and nobody in this field reads one.

Do I need a degree to work in information technology?

It depends which of the ten occupations you mean, which is the point of the whole page. Nine of the ten list a bachelor's degree as typical entry-level education on the BLS group page, computer and information research scientists list a master's degree, and computer support specialists are listed with entry requirements varying (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook). That last row is the usual way in without a degree, and certifications carry more weight on those files than on any other.

Is it worth moving toward information security specifically?

The published figures point that way. Information security analysts are projected to grow 21 percent between 2025 and 2035 with a median annual wage of $129,180 in May 2025, against computer support specialists declining 3 percent with a combined median of $62,890 (BLS, May 2025 and 2025-35 projections). But support specialists still generate about 48,700 openings a year against about 14,100 for security analysts, so the faster occupation is the more contested one.
