Summary

An IT help desk resume is a one to two page document that names which of the two published computer support occupations you are applying to, then proves it with ticket volume, first-contact resolution and the service targets you met. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the queue numbers almost nobody includes, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook.

IT Help Desk resume examples by experience level

In short, an IT help desk resume is a one to two page document that names the queue you worked, the volume you carried, the share of tickets you closed yourself, and the service targets you were measured against.

Before any of that, it makes one decision most applicants never make. The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes computer support specialists as two separate occupations with two separate wages, and almost every help desk posting is one or the other without saying so. Picking one before you write changes the resume and the offer.

Resume guide for an IT help desk resume

Specifically, this guide and the corresponding IT help desk resume example will cover:

  • How to write an IT help desk resume, section by section
  • Which of the two published support occupations you are applying to, and how to tell
  • Three adaptable summaries: first desk role, tier 2 analyst and team lead
  • The eight queue numbers that turn a support resume into evidence
  • What the market looks like and what you can expect to earn

How to write an IT help desk resume

Overall, six sections: contact header with a title line, summary, a queue and service numbers block, experience, technical skills, and education with certifications. Generally, one page for your first five years, two once you have led a shift or owned a target.

The order is unusual on purpose. On most technical resumes, of course, the numbers live inside the experience bullets. On a support resume, however, they earn their own block, because they are the only thing separating forty applicants who have all written "provided technical support to end users".

Expert Tip

Get your numbers out of the ticketing system before you leave the job

Everything that makes a support resume credible lives inside a system you lose access to on your last day: ticket counts, first-contact resolution, target attainment, satisfaction scores and the response counts behind them.

Once a quarter, open your own reporting view and write down six figures: tickets closed, first-contact resolution, response and resolution attainment, escalation rate, satisfaction score with its number of responses, and the period it all covers. Keep them in a file outside work. Nobody expects you to remember that your first-contact resolution was 74 percent across 4,080 tickets. They do notice that you know it.

Run the finished file through the ATS resume checker before you submit. Support postings draw some of the highest application volumes in technology and are parsed into a structured record before anyone reads them.

Choosing the best resume format for an IT help desk resume

Reverse chronological, then, single column, with the queue numbers near the top. Similarly, one page for your first five years, two once you have led a shift, owned a service target or run a migration across a whole site.

The functional format, however, is a trap here. Support managers read for how long you stayed, because the desk has heavy turnover and a hire who leaves in five months is expensive. After all, a format that hides dates reads as one hiding short tenures, which is the exact fear you need to argue against.

If you have had short roles, write them with their reason: contract, site closure, the end of a rollout project. In other words, a stated reason closes the question; a gap invites it.

The right column names a sector and an estate size in one line, then says which occupation the file is for. That third line is missing from almost every support resume in the folder; for this reason, it is the one this page argues for.

Make use of a summary

In short, three or four lines: the occupation you are applying as, the environment and its size, one volume number, and one quality number with its period.

First help desk role adaptable resume summary example

IT help desk technician with two years on a tier 1 desk supporting 620 users across four distribution centers and a head office, closing about 76 tickets a week. First-contact resolution of 61 percent over my last six months, and the 15 minute response target met on 88 percent of 214 priority 1 incidents. Applying as a computer user support specialist. Hold CompTIA A+ and CompTIA Network+.

Tier 2 help desk analyst adaptable resume summary example

IT help desk analyst with six years in healthcare support, currently holding a tier 2 queue for 2,900 users across 11 clinics and a hospital, about 340 tickets a month. First-contact resolution of 74 percent across 4,080 tickets in the last 12 months, escalation rate 19 percent, satisfaction 4.6 of 5 on 412 responses. Wrote 38 knowledge base articles, one of which cut monthly password reset tickets from 290 to 96. Hold CompTIA A+, Network+ and Security+.

Help desk team lead adaptable resume summary example

IT help desk team lead running a seven-person desk across two shifts for a 2,900-user healthcare provider handling about 41,000 tickets a year. Took first-contact resolution from 68 percent to 81 percent over 18 months by rebuilding the knowledge base and moving password resets to self-service, and met the priority 2 resolution target on 94 percent of tickets last year. Found and closed the annual certificate expiry that had been generating roughly 200 tickets in two days every spring.

IT Help Desk Team Lead, Waverly Park Health Partners, Louisville, KY, March 2024 to Present

Run a seven-person service desk across two shifts for 2,900 users at 11 clinics and one hospital, about 41,000 tickets a year, 06:00 to 20:00 Eastern with overnight on-call.

First-contact resolution went from 68 percent to 81 percent over 18 months after rebuilding the knowledge base around the 20 highest-volume ticket types and moving password resets to self-service.

Priority 2 resolution target of 8 working hours met on 94 percent of tickets last year, against 86 percent the year before.

Found the root cause of a recurring spring incident: a certificate on the clinical single sign-on expiring annually, generating roughly 200 tickets in two days. Added it to the change calendar with a 30 day renewal alert; it has not recurred.

Hired and inducted 5 technicians on a shadowing plan that took new starters to independent queue work in 11 days rather than 30.

Decide which of the two computer support occupations you are applying to, then prove it

This is the section that separates a support resume from a support application; moreover, almost nobody writes it.

To begin with, the Bureau of Labor Statistics does not publish one help desk occupation. Instead, it publishes computer support specialists as two, paid differently. For example, computer network support specialists earned a median of $76,220 in May 2025; computer user support specialists earned $61,860 over the same period, a difference of $14,360 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025 wage data). Entry requirements also differ: the Handbook lists an associate's degree as typical for network support specialists, and for user support specialists some college courses, or a high school diploma plus IT certifications.

Postings almost never use either title. Instead, they say "help desk", "service desk", "IT support" or "desktop support", then describe one of the two in the duties. So read the duties and decide, before you write a line, which one you are applying to.

What the posting describesWhich occupation it isWhat your resume then has to prove

Eight queue numbers for a help desk resume

Then evidence the choice. Eight numbers do it, and a support manager can check each one against their own dashboard.

Adaptable resume queue and service numbers block example

Environment and queue (current role)

Users and sites: 2,900 users across 11 clinics and one hospital, 4,100 endpoints including 380 clinical workstations

Coverage: 06:00 to 20:00 Eastern, two shifts, overnight on-call rotation, seven technicians

Volume: about 41,000 tickets a year, roughly 3,400 a month across tier 1 and tier 2

First-contact resolution: 81 percent, up from 68 percent over 18 months

Service targets: 15 minute response on priority 1, met on 92 percent; 8 working hour resolution on priority 2, met on 94 percent

Escalation: 14 percent, to network engineering, clinical applications and the records vendor

Satisfaction: 4.6 of 5 on 412 responses in the last 12 months

Platforms: ServiceNow, Active Directory and Entra ID, Intune, Microsoft 365, Windows 11, an electronic health record system

The last line of that block deserves the most thought. Anyone can close a ticket. Above all, the recurring incident you traced to a cause and stopped is the evidence that you are worth keeping past the first year. Write it as a short narrative in your experience section: the symptom, how many tickets it generated, what caused it, and what you changed so it would not come back.

Build a snapshot of your key IT help desk skills

In addition, twelve to eighteen entries in four groups. Also put the platforms the posting names first, keep the ticketing system visible, and do not pad with Microsoft Office applications.

Adaptable resume skills example

Service management: ServiceNow, incident and request handling, priority and escalation rules, knowledge base authoring, shift handover

Identity and endpoint: Active Directory, Entra ID, Group Policy, Microsoft Intune, Windows 11 deployment and imaging, macOS support, BitLocker recovery

Productivity and collaboration: Microsoft 365 administration, Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint, multifactor authentication enrollment and recovery

Network and connectivity: VPN client troubleshooting, wireless authentication, DNS and DHCP basics, switch port checks, printer queues, electronic health record end-user support

List your education and certifications

Certifications first if your degree is not in technology, because on a support file they carry more weight than anywhere else in this field.

That is not a rule of thumb, it is what the entry requirements say. In particular, the Handbook lists an associate's degree as typical entry-level education for computer network support specialists, and for computer user support specialists some college courses, or a high school diploma combined with IT certifications (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, retrieved 16 September 2026). The desk is the published route into the field without a degree; for this reason, the certification block has to be specific and current.

Choose the right layout and design

Likewise, single column, 11 point body type, plain headings, no photograph, no skill rating bars. Large employers put support roles through an applicant tracking system before a person opens them, and two columns and text boxes are where parsing breaks.

Do

Say which of the two support occupations you are applying to. Put users, sites and tier in the line under your name. Give first-contact resolution with the number of tickets behind it. State service targets and the percentage met. Give the satisfaction score with its response count. Describe one recurring incident you root-caused.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not write "provided technical support to end users", which is the most common sentence in the folder. Do not give a satisfaction score without a denominator. Do not claim an escalation rate of nearly zero, because it reads as either invented or as a desk with nowhere to escalate to. Do not list every Microsoft Office application. Do not hide short tenures behind a functional format.

IT help desk job market and outlook

A very large occupation in slow decline that still turns over more openings a year than almost anything else in technology. In fact, this is a market shaped by turnover.

Statistical insight

A declining occupation with about 48,700 openings a year

Computer support specialists held 903,100 jobs in 2025 and are projected to decline 3 percent through 2035, a change of -24,300 across the whole decade, while the same profile projects about 48,700 openings a year (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025 to 2035 projections, published 27 August 2026).

Set those two figures beside each other and the honest reading is not that the work is disappearing. It is that the desk has very high turnover, and nearly all of those openings are people leaving rather than seats being created.

For an applicant that cuts both ways. Getting in is comparatively easy and there is nearly always a vacancy near you. Being kept, promoted and paid is the hard part, and it turns on whether you look like someone who stays and fixes things or someone passing through. That is the job your tenure dates, your root-caused incident and your knowledge base articles are doing on the page.

Moreover, where the work sits differs between the two. For instance, computer network support specialists worked mainly in computer systems design and related services, 20 percent of employment, with educational services at 11 percent and telecommunications and government each at 8 percent in 2025. User support specialists, meanwhile, sat at 21 percent in computer systems design, 12 percent in educational services and 10 percent in information (BLS, 2025 employment estimates).

What salary you can expect on an IT help desk

Overall, computer support specialists earned a combined median annual wage of $62,890, or $30.24 an hour, as of May 2025 (BLS, May 2025). That combined figure is the one most people quote and the least useful to negotiate against, because it averages two occupations paid differently.

However, use the one that matches your file. Specifically, computer network support specialists earned a median of $76,220 in May 2025, the lowest 10 percent under $47,120 and the highest over $127,780. In contrast, computer user support specialists earned $61,860, the lowest 10 percent under $40,980 and the highest over $100,540 (BLS, May 2025).

Sector, furthermore, is the other lever, and it moves real money at the same tier. Network support specialists earned a median of $82,640 in finance and insurance, $78,030 in government and $77,810 in telecommunications as of May 2025, while user support specialists earned $77,180 in government, $65,400 in information and $62,990 in finance and insurance (BLS, May 2025). Government pays user support well above the occupational median, which is worth knowing before writing off the public sector.

Finally, the route up is the one this page has been describing: move your evidence from volume toward permanence. Tickets closed is the entry claim, first-contact resolution is the competence claim, and a recurring incident you ended is the claim that gets you the network support role or the lead position rather than another seat on the same desk.

Key takeaways for an IT help desk resume

  1. Decide which of the two published support occupations you are applying to, and say so.
  2. First of all, put users, sites, tier and ticketing system in the line under your name.
  3. Then give first-contact resolution with the ticket count and period behind it.
  4. Also state the service targets and the percentage met, not just that targets existed.
  5. Give the satisfaction score with its response count.
  6. In addition, name one recurring incident you traced to a cause and ended.
  7. Finally, show tenure honestly, because turnover is the reader's main worry.

IT help desk resume questions, answered

How long should an IT help desk resume be?

One page for your first five years. Two once you have led a shift, owned a service target, or run a device rollout across several sites. Support managers read large stacks of these quickly, and a second page is earned only by numbers a first page cannot hold.

What do I put on an IT help desk resume with no experience?

Anything that is provably a queue. Retail or call center work where you handled a measured volume of people is closer to this job than applicants realize, so write it with numbers: contacts per shift, resolution rate, satisfaction score. Then add CompTIA A+ if you have it, a home lab described concretely, and any volunteer support you have done.

Is first-contact resolution really worth including?

It is the most useful number on a support resume, because it separates closing tickets from solving them. Give it with its denominator and period: "74 percent across 4,080 tickets in the last 12 months". If your desk never measured it, say what it did measure, and do not invent a figure you cannot defend in an interview.

Should I apply as a network support specialist or a user support specialist?

Read the duties rather than the title. Switch ports, VLANs, wireless authentication, VPN and circuit faults are network support; password resets, device setup, software installs and walk-up help are user support. The published median for network support was $76,220 against $61,860 for user support in May 2025 (BLS, May 2025), so this also sets your pay band, and the way into the higher one is usually to take the network-facing tickets on your current desk before you apply.

Does the help desk lead anywhere, or is it a dead end?

It is the published entry route into the field without a degree. The occupation is projected to decline 3 percent from 2025 to 2035 while still producing about 48,700 openings a year (BLS, 2025 to 2035 projections), which tells you turnover is high. The people who move on are the ones who left evidence behind: documentation, a root cause found, a target met. Collect it while you are on the desk, not after you decide to leave.
