Summary

An IT manager resume is a two page document that states scope before it states skills: the people you managed, the budget you owned, the users and sites you supported, and the availability target you were accountable for. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the scope block almost nobody writes, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook.

IT Manager resume examples by experience level

An IT manager resume is a two page document stating scope before skills: how many people you managed, how much budget you owned, how many users and sites you supported, and what availability or service target you were accountable for.

Those four numbers, in fact, are how the job is priced, how candidates are compared, and how a recruiter decides which shortlist you belong on. They are also missing from most resumes that arrive. For example, "Managed IT operations and led a team of technical professionals" tells the reader nothing they can act on, and there are usually six of those in the stack.

This page puts the numbers back, and addresses the harder problem underneath: making a technical career read as a management track when postings expect five years of related experience.

Resume guide for an IT manager resume

Specifically, this guide and the corresponding IT manager resume example will cover:

  • How to write an IT manager resume, block by block
  • The four scope numbers that decide which shortlist you are on
  • Three adaptable summaries: first management role, IT manager and senior manager
  • How to turn a technical history into a management track on paper
  • What the market looks like and what you can expect to earn

How to write an IT manager resume

Six blocks: contact header, summary, scope, management experience, capabilities and platforms, then education and certifications. Two pages is normal and one page is usually a mistake, because the scope detail is why a reader keeps going. The scope block sits directly under the summary: it is the fastest read on the page and it decides whether the rest gets read.

BlockWhat it is answeringWhere it goes
ScopeHow big is this job, in people, money, users and uptime?Directly under the summary
Management experienceWhat did this person run, change and answer for?Reverse chronological, with numbers
Capabilities and platformsWhich estate, which framework, which audits?Grouped, by product and standard
Education and certificationsDoes the credential match the regime?Short, with authority and year
Expert Tip

Lead with the size of the job, not the list of technologies

Two candidates write "managed enterprise IT infrastructure and a team of engineers". One ran 3 people and 200 users at a single site. The other ran 26 people and 4,200 users across 34 sites with a 99.95 percent availability commitment. The resume did not distinguish them, so the recruiter guessed, and guessing goes against the candidate.

Put the numbers in the first two lines: people managed directly and indirectly, budget with the capital and operating split, user population and site count, and the availability target you carried. They also stop you being screened out for the wrong reason, since a manager who ran a $2.4 million budget is not competing for a $40 million portfolio.

Run the finished file through the ATS resume checker first. Management postings at this level are parsed before they are read.

Choosing the best resume format for an IT manager resume

Reverse chronological, single column, two pages.

However, the functional format is a trap at this level. It hides the progression from technical work to supervision to management, and that progression is what a hiring committee reads for, since the occupation typically expects five years or more of related work experience before entry (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections).

Instead, when moving from a senior technical role into management, keep the timeline and change the emphasis: the team you led without the title, the budget line you owned, the vendor you managed, the rotation you designed.

Indeed, that third line is the whole argument for this page. It answers in twelve seconds what a hiring manager would otherwise infer from two pages of bullets.

Make use of a summary

In short, four lines: the scope, the availability commitment you carried, the audit regime you answered to, and one number you moved.

First IT management role adaptable resume summary example

IT supervisor running a 4-person service desk and 2 contractors for 480 users across 3 distribution sites, against a $310,000 operating budget. Took first-contact resolution from 61 percent to 84 percent in 14 months by rebuilding the ticket categories and publishing a 40-article knowledge base. Accountable for 99.5 percent availability on the warehouse management system, met in 11 of the last 12 months. Promoted from senior technician after leading the Windows 11 rollout to 480 endpoints.

IT manager adaptable resume summary example

IT manager for a 1,900-user medical group across 11 sites, managing 6 staff directly, 3 indirectly and a 4-person managed service provider, against a $2.4 million operating budget and a $640,000 capital plan. Accountable for 99.9 percent availability on the electronic health record, met in 23 of the last 24 months, with a 4-hour recovery time objective proven in two annual failover tests. Own the annual HIPAA Security Rule risk analysis and the vendor SOC 2 Type II review for the patient portal. Cut service desk cost per ticket from $31 to $19 while raising first-contact resolution to 79 percent.

Senior IT manager adaptable resume summary example

Senior IT manager for a 4,200-user health system across 34 sites in two states, leading 11 direct reports, 26 indirect and two vendor teams, with a $7.8 million budget split $5.9 million operating and $1.9 million capital. Held 99.95 percent availability on the electronic health record for nine consecutive quarters, with a 4-hour recovery time objective proven twice a year. Built the control program mapped to the NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 and own the annual HIPAA Security Rule risk analysis. Renegotiated the managed service and network contracts, taking $1.1 million out of annual run cost over two years without reducing coverage.

Right vs wrong: the same IT manager summary, twice

✅ Right❌ Wrong
11 direct reports, 26 indirect, two vendor teams, $7.8 million budget.Led a large team of IT professionals and managed departmental budgets.
4,200 users across 34 sites in two states.Supported users across multiple locations in a growing organization.
Held 99.95 percent EHR availability for nine consecutive quarters.Ensured high system uptime and reliability.
Took $1.1 million out of annual run cost over two years without reducing coverage.Achieved significant cost savings through vendor management.

The right column can be compared against another candidate in a minute. The left column, in contrast, asks the reader to take your word for the size of the job, and they will not.

Outline your IT management experience

Then list employer, what it does, the scope you held, and the dates. Then four to six bullets. Above all, management bullets need what technical bullets do not: a population and a period.

Adaptable resume employment history example

IT Manager, Infrastructure and Service Delivery, Sonoran Medical Group, Phoenix, AZ, April 2021 to Present

Scope: 6 direct reports and 3 indirect, plus a 4-person managed service provider. $2.4 million operating budget and a $640,000 annual capital plan. 1,900 users across 11 sites. Accountable for 99.9 percent availability on the electronic health record.

Held the availability commitment in 23 of the last 24 months and proved the 4-hour recovery time objective in two annual failover tests, one a full cutover to the secondary site.

Cut service desk cost per ticket from $31 to $19 and raised first-contact resolution from 58 percent to 79 percent by restructuring the tiering model and retiring 3 duplicate queues.

Own the annual HIPAA Security Rule risk analysis and the SOC 2 Type II review of the patient portal vendor, with no repeat findings in the last two cycles.

Reduced voluntary turnover from 3 leavers a year to 1 with a published on-call rotation, compensating time and a written escalation path.

A scope line inside each role, before the achievement bullets, lets a reader compare two jobs without recalculating anything.

State your scope: headcount, budget, users supported and the availability you were accountable for

IT management is hired on scope, and in fact scope has four numbers. Most applicants omit two of them.

Scope numberWhat to writeWhy it decides the screen
PeopleDirect reports, indirect reports, contractors and vendor staff, counted separately6 direct is a different job from 6 direct and 26 indirect; conflating them reads as inflation
BudgetTotal, split into operating and capital, with your approval authorityThe clearest proxy for organizational level; the split says whether you plan or only spend
Users and sitesUser population, site count, states, and whether sites are clinical, industrial or office1,900 users at 11 sites is a travel and standardization problem; 1,900 in one building is not
Availability or service targetThe commitment you carried, the system it covered, how often you met it, the recovery time objectiveThe accountability line; its absence is conspicuous
Adaptable resume scope block example

People: 11 direct reports across infrastructure, service desk and applications; 26 indirect; 2 vendor teams under managed service contract.

Budget: $7.8 million total, $5.9 million operating and $1.9 million capital. Signature authority to $250,000. Within 2 percent of plan for three consecutive years.

Users and sites: 4,200 users across 34 sites in Arizona and New Mexico, 31 of them clinical sites open 7 days a week.

Availability: 99.95 percent on the electronic health record, held for nine consecutive quarters, with a 4-hour recovery time objective and a 1-hour recovery point objective proven in two failover tests a year.

Compliance: annual HIPAA Security Rule risk analysis; control program mapped to the NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0; SOC 2 Type II review of 6 vendors a year.

Add the fifth line when it applies: the audit regime is the scope number regulated-sector hiring managers screen for first. Name it with its authority.

Audit regimes that shape IT manager scope

The HIPAA Security Rule requires a covered entity to conduct an accurate and thorough assessment of the potential risks and vulnerabilities to the confidentiality, integrity and availability of electronic protected health information, at 45 C.F.R. section 164.308(a)(1)(ii)(A), according to guidance published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights. If you own that assessment, say so; very few candidates do.

A SOC 2 report is an attestation performed under standards promulgated by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, evaluated against the 2017 Trust Services Criteria with revised points of focus issued in 2022, covering security, availability, processing integrity, confidentiality and privacy (AICPA Assurance Services Executive Committee). Say which categories were in scope, and whether Type I or Type II.

For the operating side, also name the framework you run to. For example, ITIL 4, published by PeopleCert, organizes service management around a service value system and four dimensions: organizations and people, information and technology, partners and suppliers, and value streams and processes. Likewise, COBIT 2019, published by ISACA, sets out a core model of 40 governance and management objectives. In addition, ISO/IEC 20000-1:2018, the international standard for service management system requirements, was published in its third edition on 14 September 2018 and confirmed as current in December 2023 by the International Organization for Standardization. Finally, the NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 was published by NIST as NIST CSWP 29 on 26 February 2024.

Turning technical work into management scope

Now the harder half: how a technical career becomes a management track on paper. In particular, BLS gives five years or more of related work experience as the typical requirement for computer and information systems managers (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections). That is about judgment under accountability, and the evidence exists in almost every senior technical history.

Technical work you already didHow it reads as management scope
Ran the on-call rotationDesigned and staffed a 6-person rotation covering 4,200 users, with a written escalation path
Technical lead on a migrationRan the 11-site migration to a date and a $640,000 capital budget, no unplanned downtime
Handled a tool renewalOwned a $310,000 annual contract, renegotiated for a 14 percent reduction
Mentored junior engineersOnboarded and developed 4 engineers, 2 promoted within 18 months
Wrote the runbooksBuilt the documentation standard adopted by 3 teams, cutting mean time to restore from 94 to 41 minutes

None of that is exaggeration. It is the same work, counted. The mistake first-time management applicants make is describing the technology rather than the accountability; the fix is putting the population, the money and the period into sentences they have already written.

Statistical insight

A large, fast-growing occupation that pays for scope

Computer and information systems managers held 685,800 jobs in 2025, and employment is projected to grow 16 percent between 2025 and 2035, an increase of 108,100 positions, with about 53,500 openings each year (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections). The median annual wage was $175,140 as of May 2025, or $84.20 an hour, against a typical entry requirement of a bachelor's degree plus five years or more of related work experience (BLS, May 2025).

Read those together and the strategy is clear. A growing occupation with many openings, gated on demonstrated experience rather than credentials, paid at a level that makes the scope question decisive. The resume's job is to prove the five years were spent carrying accountability, not only operating systems.

Build a snapshot of your key IT manager skills

Generally, fourteen to eighteen entries in four groups. Therefore, management first, platforms second, because the reverse is a senior engineer's resume.

Adaptable resume skills example

Management: Team leadership and hiring, Budget ownership and forecasting, Vendor and contract negotiation, Capacity and lifecycle planning, On-call design, Performance management

Service delivery: Incident, problem and change management, Service level and availability management, Major incident command, Disaster recovery testing, Service desk tiering

Compliance and risk: HIPAA Security Rule risk analysis, SOC 2 Type II vendor review, NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 control mapping, Business continuity planning, Access review

Platforms: Microsoft 365 and Entra ID, VMware and Hyper-V, Azure, Cisco and Meraki networking, ServiceNow or Jira Service Management

Also, name the service management platform by product. After all, ServiceNow, Jira Service Management, Ivanti and Freshservice imply different process maturity, and hiring managers screen on which you have run.

List your education and certifications

Degree, then certifications with the issuing authority and year, then formal management training.

Adaptable resume education and certifications example

Bachelor of Science, Information Systems, Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ, 2008.

Certifications: ITIL 4 Foundation, PeopleCert (2022). Project Management Professional, Project Management Institute (2019, renewed 2025). Certified Information Systems Security Professional, ISC2 (2021). Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate (2023).

Management development: 12-month leadership program, Sonoran Medical Group, 2020.

Similarly, put the issuing authority next to every certification. "ITIL 4" is a claim; "ITIL 4 Foundation, PeopleCert, 2022" is a record somebody can verify, and at this level it gets verified.

Choose the right layout and design

Likewise: single column, 11 point, two pages, clear headings, no photograph, no rating bars. Put the scope block in a short labeled list rather than a table, since lists survive parsing and tables sometimes do not.

Do

Give all four scope numbers in the first ten lines. Count direct and indirect reports separately. Split the budget into operating and capital and state your signature authority. Name the availability target, the system it covered and how often you met it. Name the audit regime with its authority. Repeat a one-line scope statement inside each role.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not write "managed a team of IT professionals" without a count. Do not merge contractors into your headcount. Do not claim an availability figure you cannot source from a monitoring report. Do not name a framework you have not worked to. Do not compress a management history to one page.

IT manager job market and outlook

In fact, the experience requirement is the most actionable line in that table. Unlike occupations gated on a license, this one is gated on a history a committee has to read and believe. In other words, five years of accountability described precisely beats eight described vaguely.

What salary you can expect as an IT manager

Overall, the median annual wage for computer and information systems managers was $175,140 as of May 2025, or $84.20 an hour (BLS, May 2025).

Industry sets much of the rest. For instance, median pay ran to $200,510 in information, $182,510 in finance and insurance, $179,510 in computer systems design and related services, $178,110 in manufacturing, and $176,950 in management of companies and enterprises (BLS, May 2025). That is a spread of about $23,560 for the same occupation, and it moves with the criticality of the systems rather than the size of the team.

Even so, inside any sector, scope moves the offer. Headcount, budget, user population, site count and the availability commitment are the variables a compensation team benchmarks against, and each is a number you either put on the page or leave the reader to guess. When you negotiate, quote the occupation and the cycle: the BLS May 2025 median for computer and information systems managers is $175,140.

Key takeaways for an IT manager resume

  1. First of all, put all four scope numbers in the first ten lines: people, budget, users and sites, availability.
  2. Also count direct and indirect reports separately, and keep contractors out of the headcount.
  3. Then split the budget into operating and capital, and state your signature authority.
  4. Name the availability target, the system it covered and how often you met it.
  5. Moreover, name the audit regime with its authority, not just an acronym.
  6. Repeat a one-line scope statement inside each role so jobs can be compared.
  7. Finally, convert technical history into accountability: population, money, period.

IT manager resume questions, answered

How long should an IT manager resume be?

Two pages. One page forces you to cut the scope detail that makes the case; three means you are listing technologies rather than accountability. Two pages is still right for a first management role, because converting technical work into scope takes room.

What if I do not know my exact budget or user count?

Reconstruct it and say it is approximate. Sum the contracts you signed or approved; count licensed accounts in the identity platform; count sites from the network inventory. "Roughly 1,900 users across 11 sites" is credible and checkable in an interview. A blank is not.

Do I need ITIL, PMP or a master's degree to be hired as an IT manager?

None is a formal requirement. The Bureau of Labor Statistics gives the typical entry-level education as a bachelor's degree and typical experience as five years or more in a related occupation (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections). Certifications help where the posting names them. Scope on the page outranks all of them.

How do I show management experience if I have never had direct reports?

Count what you carried. A rotation you designed and staffed, a vendor contract you owned, a project run to a date and a budget, engineers you onboarded, a standard adopted by other teams. Write each with a population and a period. That is what the five-year requirement is asking about.

Should I list every system and platform I have managed?

No. Group them and name what the posting cares about: the identity platform, the virtualization stack, the network vendor, the service management tool and the line-of-business system. A wall of technologies reads as a senior engineer's resume, which is the opposite of what a management screen wants.

How do I explain a smaller scope than the posting asks for?

Directly, in the summary, with a growth line. If they want 4,000 users and you have run 1,900, say what you ran and then what you have carried that scales: a multi-site rollout, a 24-hour service, an audited environment. Hiring managers routinely appoint one step below the advertised scope when the accountability pattern is right.
