Summary

An engineering manager resume is a one to two page document that says how many engineers reported to you, what happened to them while they did, and how much of the work on the page you wrote yourself. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the people record most applicants leave out, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook for the occupation it maps onto.

Engineering Manager resume examples by experience level

An engineering manager resume is a one to two page document that says how many engineers reported to you, what happened to those engineers while they did, and how much of the work on the page you wrote yourself.

The difficulty is structural. After all, almost everything a manager produces is produced by somebody else, so a management resume written the way an engineering resume is written ends up describing other people's commits. Instead, the fix is a different class of evidence: who you hired, how fast they became useful, who got promoted, who stayed, and where you drew the line on writing code yourself.

Resume guide for an engineering manager resume

In short, this guide and the corresponding engineering manager resume example will cover:

  • How to write an engineering manager resume, section by section
  • The people record: hiring, ramp, promotions, retention and the on-call rotation
  • Three adaptable summaries, from tech lead to manager of managers
  • How to state the code you still write without being screened as a senior engineer
  • What the job market looks like and what you can expect to earn

How to write an engineering manager resume

First, plan six sections: contact header, summary, management experience, the people record, skills, and education with certifications. One page while you manage one team, two once you manage managers. That is because the order follows the sequence the reader works through: is this a manager, how many people, for how long, and what happened to them.

Expert Tip

A promotion is the only dated, employer-signed statement about your management

Everything else on a management resume is self-reported. A promotion is not. It is somebody else's committee, somebody else's calibration and somebody else's requisition line, on a date you can name.

Write promotions as a list with levels and dates: supported four promotions in two years, two to senior engineer, one to staff, one into a first management role. That is not a claim on another person's work. It says engineers on your team were promoted at a rate, which is a fact about the conditions you built.

If nobody was promoted, put the reason in a clause: a team of three, an eighteen-month freeze, a reorganization halfway through. The reader was going to ask.

Run the finished file through the ATS resume checker before you send it. Management applications go through the same parsers as engineering ones, and a two-column template loses the reporting-line detail the whole file depends on.

Choosing the best resume format for an engineering manager resume

Reverse chronological, always. In practice, the reader is counting years in the chair, and a format that hides the timeline reads as a timeline worth hiding.

For most people, one page covers a first management role. Two pages become fair once you have managed managers, because the second page carries the earlier engineering career, and that career is a hiring requirement rather than background color.

Include your contact information

Also, put the team shape in the title line. A reader sorts forty management files into manager of one team and manager of managers before reading anything else.

Make use of a summary

Then write four lines: how many engineers and at what levels, how long you have managed, one thing that happened to the people, one thing the team shipped.

Tech lead moving into management adaptable resume summary example

Tech lead on a payments platform team of six engineers, running the hiring loop, the on-call rotation and weekly one to one meetings for eighteen months without a formal reporting line. Interviewed 41 candidates and brought in two engineers, both still on the team a year later, and rewrote onboarding so a new engineer's first change reaches production inside two weeks. Ready for a first formal engineering manager role.

Engineering manager adaptable resume summary example

Engineering manager with three years leading one team of nine engineers on a freight tracking platform: four senior, three mid, two early career. Hired five engineers from 164 applications, supported three promotions including one to staff, and cut median time from start date to first production change from 31 working days to 11. Two regretted departures in three years against an average headcount of eight. Write about a day a week of code, by agreement, on tooling rather than the roadmap.

Senior engineering manager adaptable resume summary example

Senior engineering manager running three teams and 24 engineers through two engineering managers on the platform and payments side of a freight business. Hired six engineers and two managers last year, supported five promotions in two years including one engineer into a first management role, and widened an on-call rotation from five engineers to eleven, taking after-hours pages per engineer per month from 4.2 to 0.9. No longer on the roadmap; code is limited to internal tooling and review.

Right vs wrong: the same engineering manager summary, twice

✅ Right❌ Wrong
Engineering manager with three years leading a single team of nine engineers.Experienced engineering leader with a track record of building high performing teams.
Hired five engineers from 164 applications and supported three promotions including one to staff.Recruited top talent and developed team members to reach their potential.
Cut median time from start date to first production change from 31 working days to 11.Improved onboarding and increased team productivity.
Two regretted departures in three years against an average headcount of eight.Maintained strong team morale and low turnover.

As a result, every line in the right column is a number a reference check can confirm in one question. By contrast, every line in the left appears in most of the other files on the desk.

Outline your engineering management experience

Employer, title, dates, then one line naming the teams, the headcount and what the systems do. Then three to five bullets, each naming a decision that was yours rather than an outcome that was the team's.

Adaptable resume employment history example

Senior Engineering Manager, Brookvale Freight Systems, Atlanta, GA, July 2025 to Present

Run three teams and 24 engineers through two engineering managers, covering the tracking platform, the carrier integrations and the payments ledger.

Hired six engineers and two engineering managers in twelve months, offer acceptance 6 of 8, median approved requisition to signed offer 47 days.

Supported five promotions in two years, two to senior engineer, two to staff and one engineer into a first management role, writing and defending four of the five packets at calibration.

Widened the on-call rotation from five engineers to eleven and ran an alert review that retired 34 alerts with no defined action; after-hours pages per engineer per month fell from 4.2 to 0.9 over two quarters.

Kept about 10 percent of the week on code: on-call handover tooling, the deployment runbook generator, and review on every ledger change.

The people record: hiring, ramp, promotion, retention and the IC line you kept

In other words, this is the block that separates a management resume from an engineering resume with a bigger word in the title, and almost nobody writes it. Six facts about people rather than systems, each with a number and a window.

Hiring, with the funnel behind it. "Hired five engineers" is a claim about a budget. "Hired five engineers from 164 applications, 31 phone screens and 14 on-site loops, offer acceptance 5 of 6" is a claim about you. Add median approved requisition to signed offer if you tracked it; that is the number a director asks about in the second interview.

Ramp: start date to first change in production. The most useful onboarding metric, and cheap to calculate from your own repository history. Write it as a median in working days with a before, an after and the change that moved it. An engineer who ships something small in week two was given a working environment, a starter issue and somebody to ask. One who ships in week seven was not.

Engineering manager promotions and retention

Promotions supported, and to what level. Count them, level them, date them. Two to senior, one to staff and one into a first management role is a different statement from four promotions. Say whether you wrote and defended the packet at calibration, because that is a distinct skill.

Regretted attrition against team size, over a stated window. Give the denominator and the period. Two regretted departures in 24 months against an average headcount of 22 is a good number; two against a headcount of six is a different number wearing the same words. Separate regretted departures from planned ones, since saying which is which is more convincing than a low total.

One underperformance case, worked to a stated outcome, with nobody identifiable. Every manager hits this and almost every resume pretends otherwise. One sentence is enough: ran one formal improvement plan to a successful close, with the engineer still employed and off plan after 90 days. Give no role, team, date or detail that would identify anyone. The point is that you have done the hardest part of the job once.

On-call load and the IC line you kept

On-call load, redistributed. Managers inherit rotations that are too small and too loud. Give the width before and after, the frequency in weeks, and what happened to after-hours pages per engineer. A rotation of five carrying a week in five is a retention problem with a date on it, and fixing one is evidence.

Adaptable resume people record example

Team: 3 teams, 24 engineers, 2 engineering managers reporting in, 1 open manager requisition. Levels: 4 staff, 9 senior, 8 mid, 3 early career.

Hiring: 6 engineers and 2 managers hired in 2025 from 212 applications, 38 phone screens and 19 on-site loops. Median approved requisition to signed offer, 47 days. Offer acceptance 6 of 8.

Ramp: median 11 working days from start date to first change released to production, down from 31, after a rewritten first week, a named onboarding partner and a starter issue chosen before the start date.

Promotions: 5 in 24 months. 2 to senior engineer, 2 to staff engineer, 1 into a first engineering manager role. 4 packets written and defended at calibration.

Retention: 2 regretted departures in 24 months against an average headcount of 22. 1 internal transfer supported into a data team, counted separately.

Performance: 1 formal improvement plan run to a successful close; the engineer stayed and came off plan after 90 days.

On-call: rotation widened from 5 engineers to 11, one week in eleven rather than one in five. After-hours pages per engineer per month 4.2 to 0.9 across two quarters, 34 alerts retired.

Still writing code: about 10 percent of the week, on on-call handover tooling and the deployment runbook generator, plus review on every ledger change.

Then the two lines that decide how the file is read: what you still wrote yourself, how much of your week it took, and why that was right.

Therefore, say it as a fraction and a subject. About 10 percent of the week, on internal tooling rather than the roadmap, because the team could not afford a manager on the critical path. Or: no production code since 2024, by agreement, because three teams was already more than one calendar. Both are defensible. What is not is a management resume whose bullets are all pull requests: a screener holding a manager requisition reads that as a senior engineer's file and routes it to the engineering loop, where it competes against people who spent those two years writing systems instead of running hiring.

Build a snapshot of your key engineering manager skills

Later, in skills, list twelve to eighteen entries in four labeled groups. Keep a technical group, because the occupation expects the engineering background to still be live.

Adaptable resume skills example

People: Hiring and interview loop design, Performance management and improvement plans, Promotion packets and calibration, Leveling and career frameworks, One to one coaching, Onboarding and ramp design

Delivery: Quarterly planning, Roadmap negotiation with product, Incident review facilitation, Cross-team dependency management, Capacity planning against a fixed headcount

Technical context, current: Java and Go services on AWS, Kubernetes, PostgreSQL, event-driven carrier integrations, code review on ledger changes

Organization: Requisition planning and level setting, Interviewer training, On-call rotation design, Reorganization planning

List your education and certifications

Degree, year and institution, then formal management training, then the engineering certifications that are still true. However, keep it short: after a second management role, nobody is hiring the degree.

Adaptable resume education and certifications example

Bachelor of Science, Computer Science, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, 2015

Manager development program, internal, 2023. Structured interviewer certification for the engineering hiring loop, 2024.

AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Associate, Amazon Web Services, 2019

An MBA is neither required nor penalized; list it as a degree and let it be. Training with an assessment attached earns its space, because a workshop with no outcome reads as attendance. Also, mark a lapsed certification with its year or drop it.

Choose the right layout and design

Finally, keep the format plain: single column, 11 or 12 point body type, clear headings, no photograph, no skill bars. The people record is a block of short labeled lines, which both survives parsing and can be read in twenty seconds.

Do

Put the engineer count and team count in the title line. Give hiring numbers with the funnel behind them. Give ramp as a median in working days with a before and an after. Level and date every promotion. Give regretted attrition with its denominator and its window. Say what you still write and how much of the week it takes.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not describe a performance case in any detail that could identify the person. Do not claim a reporting line you did not have; describe the work instead. Do not fill the bullets with pull requests, because that is how a manager file gets screened as an engineer file. Do not give a retention number without a team size. Do not list a lapsed certification as current.

Engineering manager job market and outlook

Engineering manager is not a title the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes. The work maps onto computer and information systems managers, which is published, and that is a mapping rather than an identity: the same code counts IT directors, infrastructure managers and security managers, so the figures describe a wider population than the people running product engineering teams.

Statistical insight

Five years in a related IT occupation, in the published Quick Facts

The Handbook's Quick Facts for computer and information systems managers give a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level education and five years or more of work experience in a related IT occupation as the typical requirement (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 edition, May 2025 data). Across the computer and information technology occupations, it is the one whose Quick Facts carry an experience requirement at all.

That line is why your engineering years stay on the page. The occupation is projected to grow 16 percent between 2025 and 2035 and to add 108,100 jobs, with about 53,500 openings a year (BLS, 2025-35 projections), and those seats are filled from inside engineering.

So write the individual contributor career as a compressed block with real systems in it. Two lines saying what you built and at what scale answer the five-year question.

Where the pay sits, by industry:

IndustryMedian annual wage (May 2025)
Information$200,510
Finance and insurance$182,510
Computer systems design and related services$179,510
Manufacturing$178,110
Management of companies and enterprises$176,950

What salary you can expect as an engineering manager

For example, the median annual wage for computer and information systems managers was $175,140 in May 2025, against $135,980 for software developers in the same cycle (BLS). In other words, the published distance between running the work and doing it is $39,160.

That gap is smaller than most people expect, and it explains a hiring behavior that otherwise looks strange. A committee weighing $175,140 against $135,980 is deciding which of two jobs you are being hired into, and it decides that from the shape of your evidence rather than from your title. However, a file full of design decisions and pull requests answers the $135,980 question whatever the header says.

Industry moves the number more than negotiation does. Meanwhile, among computer and information systems managers, the published median runs from $200,510 in information down to $176,950 in management of companies and enterprises, a spread of $23,560 across one job title (BLS, May 2025). That means the same team size and people record are priced by the sector that needs them.

For this reason, the lever a resume genuinely has is the level of the requisition you are considered for. Manager of one team and manager of managers carry different bands, and what moves you across that line is not years: it is whether you have hired managers, written promotion cases above your own level, and run a reorganization. All three belong in the people record if they are true.

Key takeaways for an engineering manager resume

  1. Put team count and engineer count in the title line, so the file sorts itself.
  2. To sum up, build the page on the people record: hiring, ramp, promotion, retention, performance and on-call.
  3. Then give hiring numbers with the funnel behind them, not just the number of hires.
  4. Write ramp as a median in working days, with a before, an after and the change that moved it.
  5. Similarly, give retention with its denominator and its window, and separate regretted departures from planned ones.
  6. Finally, say the performance case happened without giving a single identifying detail.
  7. State the IC line plainly: what you still write, how much of the week, and why that was right.

Engineering manager resume questions, answered

How long should an engineering manager resume be?

One page for a first management role, two once you manage managers. The second page carries the engineering career, which the published occupation treats as a requirement: the Quick Facts for computer and information systems managers list five years or more of work experience in a related IT occupation (BLS, 2025-35 edition).

Should I still list the code I write?

Yes, in two lines at the end of the people record, as a fraction of your week and a named subject: internal tooling, review on a critical component, or a prototype nobody else had time for. Do not let code fill the bullets.

What do I put on the resume if my title was tech lead rather than manager?

Keep the official title and describe the work underneath it: team size, hiring, one to one meetings, the on-call rotation, and whether you wrote anyone's performance feedback. Those five facts are what a hiring manager is establishing, and they are checkable. An invented title ends the application at the reference check.

How do I show retention without naming anyone?

Counts and denominators only. Two regretted departures in 24 months against an average headcount of 22, one internal transfer supported and counted separately. Never a role, a date, or a reason attributable to a person inside a small team.

What if my team shrank, or I had to run a layoff?

Say it in one neutral clause: team reduced from 14 to 9 in a company-wide reduction, with the roadmap re-scoped to three services. A reader is checking whether you can describe a hard year without hiding it or making it the subject of the resume.
