Claude Resume Prompts: 8 Copy-Ready Prompts Built the Claude Way
Claude resume prompts for tailoring, metric bullets, summaries, ATS keyword gaps and cover letters, plus how to fact-check output and protect your data.
On this pageWhat makes Claude resume prompts different from generic AI prompts?
Summary
The best Claude resume prompts follow Anthropic's own prompting advice: paste your resume and the job description first, wrap each in XML tags, ask your question last, and give Claude permission to say what it does not know. Use one prompt per task, such as tailoring, bullet rewrites, a summary, a keyword gap check and a cover letter handoff. Then verify every number Claude touches and strip personal data before you paste.
The best Claude resume prompts put your documents first, label them with simple XML tags, and end with one clear task. That structure comes straight from Anthropic's prompting guide, and it beats the generic "rewrite my resume" requests most lists recycle.
Below are eight prompts to copy, from a job-description gap map to a final fact audit. Each one tells Claude to flag guesses instead of inventing them.
What makes Claude resume prompts different from generic AI prompts?
Three parts of Anthropic's prompting guidance shape good Claude resume prompts.
First, structure. Anthropic's prompting best practices1 say XML tags "help Claude parse complex prompts unambiguously" when a prompt mixes instructions, context and inputs. Tags like <resume> and <job_description> keep your bullets and the employer's requirements apart.
Second, order. The same guide says to place long documents near the top and your question at the end. Anthropic reports this can improve response quality by up to 30% in tests, especially with multi-document inputs like a resume plus a job post.
Third, honesty. Its guide to reducing hallucinations2 recommends giving Claude explicit permission to admit uncertainty and limiting it to the documents you provide. That separates "led a team" from an invented "led a team of 12."
Explain why, not just what
Anthropic says Claude responds better when it knows why. Instead of "no fake numbers," write "a recruiter may ask about every number, so only use figures I give you."
How should you set up Claude before pasting your resume?
Create a Claude Project for your search, add a standing instruction to use only your facts, and upload a version of your resume with your address, phone and email removed. Projects are available on free accounts (up to five). Check your model-improvement privacy setting, or use an incognito chat for sensitive drafts.
Anthropic's help center describes Projects3 as "self-contained workspaces with their own chat histories and knowledge bases." They are available on free accounts, which can create up to five.
Paste this into the Project instructions once:
`text You are helping me with my job search. Use only facts from my resume and from what I tell you in chat. If a bullet would be stronger with a number I have not given you, ask me for it or write [NUMBER?] in its place. Never add employers, titles, dates, degrees, tools or certifications I have not listed. Keep US resume conventions: no photo, no personal pronouns, past tense for past roles. `
Next, upload your resume. Claude accepts PDF, DOCX, TXT and several other formats, up to 20 files per chat, according to its file upload guide4.
Before uploading, strip what Claude does not need. Fresno State's career center tells students to omit personal or identifying information6 before pasting a resume into AI. Use placeholders for your name, phone, email and address.
Then check your privacy setting. Anthropic's privacy center5 says that with model improvement on, chats may be kept in de-identified form for up to five years in training pipelines. Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, and deleted chats leave back-end storage within 30 days.
| Setup choice | What it does | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Project with instructions | Keeps your rules and resume across chats | You are applying to several roles over weeks |
| Regular chat | One-off conversation, no saved rules | Quick single rewrite |
| Incognito chat | Not used to improve Claude | Draft includes details you would rather not keep |
| Model improvement off | Future chats not used for training | You want Projects without training use |

Which Claude prompt tailors a resume to a job description?
Run two prompts in sequence. First, ask Claude to quote the job post's requirements word for word and map each one to evidence in your resume. Second, ask it to tailor only the lines where evidence exists. Quoting first grounds the rewrite in the actual posting instead of Claude's assumptions about the role.
Anthropic's hallucination guide suggests asking Claude to extract word-for-word quotes before doing the task, which forces it to show what the employer actually asked for. For a manual version of this step, see our guide on how to find keywords in a job description.
Prompt 1: The requirement map
`text <job_description> [paste the full job post] </job_description>
<resume> [paste your resume, personal details removed] </resume>
Quote each requirement from the job description word for word. For each quote, find the resume line that best supports it. Output a table with three columns: Requirement (quoted), My evidence (quoted from my resume, or "none found"), Strength (strong / partial / missing). Do not infer evidence that is not written in my resume. `
Prompt 2: The tailoring pass
`text Using the table above, rewrite only the resume lines marked "partial" so they use the employer's wording where it truthfully fits. Leave "missing" items alone and list them separately as questions for me. Show each change as: Original / Revised / Why. `
The "Original / Revised / Why" format lets you accept edits one line at a time. For the broader method, read how to tailor your resume to a job description.
How do you get Claude to rewrite bullets with real metrics?
Ask Claude to interview you before it rewrites. Prompt 3 makes Claude ask three questions per bullet about scale, results and tools. Prompt 4 then rewrites using only your answers and marks any estimate with [VERIFY]. This keeps every number traceable to something you said.
Weak bullets usually lack numbers because you never wrote them down. So the first prompt collects facts, and the second one writes.
Prompt 3: The metric interview
`text <bullets> [paste 3 to 5 bullets from one job] </bullets>
For each bullet, ask me up to three short questions that would let you add scale (how many, how often), a result (what changed, by how much) or a tool. Ask all questions first and wait for my answers. Do not rewrite anything yet. `
Prompt 4: The rewrite
`text Rewrite each bullet using only my answers. Start with a strong past-tense verb, keep each bullet under 25 words, and put the result in the first half when possible. If I gave a rough estimate, keep it and add [VERIFY] at the end so I check it before sending. `
Before: Responsible for handling customer support tickets for the billing team.
After: Resolved 40+ billing tickets per week in Zendesk, cutting the open backlog from 180 to 60 in three months [VERIFY]
The [VERIFY] tag is the safety net. Fresno State lists "personal impact statistics" and "exaggerated job responsibilities" among the details AI tends to get wrong on resumes. Each tagged number should match a record you could show in an interview.
What prompt writes a resume summary Claude will not pad?
Give Claude three inputs: the target title, your two strongest proven results, and the employer's top requirement. Ask for three summary versions under 50 words, each with no adjectives Claude cannot back with a resume line. Then pick one and edit it in your own voice.
Summaries are where AI padding shows most, so this prompt bans filler words by design.
Prompt 5: The evidence-only summary
`text <target_role>[job title and company type]</target_role> <top_results>
- [your strongest result, with a number]
- [your second result]
</top_results> <top_requirement>[the employer's #1 requirement, quoted]</top_requirement>
Write three resume summaries, each 2 to 3 sentences and under 50 words. Every claim must trace to my resume or the results above. Do not use: dynamic, passionate, results-driven, proven track record, team player. After each version, list which resume line supports each claim. `
Customer support specialist with four years in B2B SaaS billing. Cut ticket backlog by two-thirds in one quarter and built the macro library the team still uses. Moving into customer success to own renewals for mid-market accounts.
How do you run an ATS keyword gap check with Claude?
Ask Claude to list the hard skills, tools and certifications in the job post, mark each as present, implied or absent in your resume, and suggest where a present-but-buried keyword should move. Absent skills stay off your resume unless you truly have them. Then confirm the result with a dedicated ATS checker.
Claude can compare both documents side by side, but it cannot see how a specific applicant tracking system parses your file. Treat this as a first pass.
Prompt 6: The keyword gap check
`text <job_description>[paste]</job_description> <resume>[paste]</resume>
List every hard skill, tool, certification and job-title term in the job description. For each, label it: PRESENT (exact term in my resume), IMPLIED (I describe the skill but use different words) or ABSENT. For IMPLIED items, suggest the exact line to edit. For ABSENT items, do not add them; ask whether I have that experience. `
The IMPLIED column holds the quick wins: "built dashboards" may just need the tool name the post uses. After editing, run the file through the Rezoom ATS resume checker to see how the parsed text and keyword match look.
Do
- Ask Claude to quote the job post before it suggests keywords.
- Add a tool name only where you actually used that tool.
- Keep standard section headings like Experience and Education.
Don’t
- Paste a hidden list of keywords at the bottom of the resume.
- Accept ABSENT skills just because Claude phrased them well.
- Let Claude rename your past job titles to match the posting.
How do you hand off from your resume to a cover letter in Claude?
In a Project, Claude already holds your resume, the job post and your metric answers, so the cover letter builds on them.
Prompt 7: The cover-letter handoff
`text Using my tailored resume and the requirement map from this Project, write a cover letter under 300 words. Choose the two requirements where my evidence is strongest. For each, tell one short story with the situation, what I did and the result. Do not copy resume bullets word for word. Leave [HIRING MANAGER NAME] and [COMPANY DETAIL I ADMIRE] as placeholders for me to fill. `
Prompt 8: The final fact audit
`text Compare my final resume and cover letter against the original resume I uploaded. List every number, tool, title, date and credential that appears in the final versions but not in the original. For each, tell me whether it came from my chat answers or whether you cannot find a source. If you cannot find a source, recommend removing it. `
Prompt 8 applies Anthropic's advice to verify each claim with a supporting quote and retract it if none exists. The University of Virginia career center agrees: AI can "hallucinate"7, so double-check what it gives you. Is Claude good for writing resumes?
Yes, for structured tasks like tailoring and keyword checks. Its output is only as accurate as your facts, so verify every number and title.
Do Claude resume prompts work on the free plan?
Yes. All eight prompts work in a free chat, and free accounts get up to five Projects.
Should I upload my resume as a PDF or paste the text?
Either works. Pasting plain text inside `` tags makes it easier to remove personal details first.
Will Claude use my resume to train its models?
Only if your model-improvement setting is on. Anthropic says incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, and you can switch the setting off for future chats.
How are Claude prompts different from ChatGPT prompts?
Anthropic documents Claude-specific techniques, such as XML tags and placing documents before the question. Our ChatGPT resume prompts use a different, question-first setup.
Can I use the same prompts in Gemini?
Most of the logic carries over, but Gemini works best inside Google Docs and Gmail. See our Gemini resume prompts for a workflow built around Gems and Docs.
