Summary

A machine operator resume is a one to two page document that says whether you set the machine up or only run it, names the control and the machine type, and gives the tolerances you held, the cycle time and the scrap rate. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the setup ladder that decides pay, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics figures for the occupation.

Machine Operator resume examples by experience level

A machine operator resume is a one to two page document whose first job is to answer one question: do you set the machine up, or do you only run it?

Every other detail on the page is read through that answer. Two people with the same job title and the same five years can be doing entirely different work, and the resume that does not say which one you are gets sorted into the lower of the two piles by default.

Resume guide for a machine operator resume

This guide and the corresponding machine operator resume example will cover:

  • How to write a machine operator resume, section by section
  • Why setup versus operate is the split that decides your pay band
  • Three adaptable summaries: machine tender, CNC setter and operator, and cell lead
  • Which numbers a production supervisor is actually looking for
  • What the occupation pays and why openings stay high in a declining field

How to write a machine operator resume

Six sections: contact header, summary, machines and controls, work experience, education and training, and skills. One page for your first eight years. Two once you set up a cell, program at the control, or run first-article checks for other operators.

Put a machines and controls block directly under the summary. It is a list, it takes four lines, and it is the fastest way for a supervisor to see whether you can walk onto their floor.

SectionWhat it is answeringWhere it goes
Machines and controlsWhich machines, which control, and setup or operate?Directly under the summary
Work experienceWhat parts, what tolerance, what output?Reverse chronological, with numbers
Education and trainingAny formal machining or moulding training?Below experience
SkillsMeasurement, materials, maintenance, systemsGrouped, not a bar chart
Expert Tip

Name the control, not the brand of the machine

"Operated CNC machines" tells a supervisor nothing. The control is what transfers between shops, and it is the thing a hiring supervisor is silently checking.

Write it like this: "3-axis vertical machining center, Haas Next Generation Control and Fanuc 0i-MF; CNC lathe, Fanuc; turret punch, Siemens."

Then add the sentence that doubles the value of that list: "Set my own work offsets and tool offsets, change tooling, edit programs at the control, and run first-piece inspection before release."

A machine, a control and a setup claim in three lines. Most applications for these jobs contain none of the three.

Run the finished file through the free Rezoom ATS resume checker before you apply. Manufacturers and the staffing agencies that supply them parse applications before a human reads them, and a machine list in a two-column table is exactly what parses badly.

Choosing the best resume format for a machine operator resume

Reverse chronological, with a machines and controls block hoisted above experience. That hybrid is normal on a shop floor resume and nobody will find it odd.

Avoid a functional format. Production hiring reads for stability: how long you stayed, whether you moved up from tending to setup, and whether the shops were the same size and sector as theirs. A format that hides the sequence hides the promotion, and the promotion is the story.

The second and third lines are the resume. Machine, control, setup, tolerance. A production supervisor reading twenty files is scanning for those four tokens and nothing else on the first pass.

Make use of a summary

Four lines: what you run, which control, whether you set up, and one number about output or quality.

Machine tender adaptable resume summary example

Machine tender on a high-volume press line running four OBI presses and a coil feed line on stamped steel brackets, averaging 11,000 parts a shift. Perform first-piece and hourly in-process checks with calipers and go/no-go gauges against the routing sheet, record scrap by cause code, and clear jams and misfeeds without waiting on the setter. Held a scrap rate of 1.4% against a 2.5% line target across the last four quarters and completed the plant's internal press setup training in 2025.

CNC setter and operator adaptable resume summary example

CNC setter and operator on 3-axis vertical machining centers running Haas Next Generation Control and Fanuc 0i-MF, machining aluminum 6061 and 4140 steel components to print tolerances down to plus or minus 0.0005 in. Set my own work and tool offsets, change tooling, edit programs at the control, and run first-piece inspection with micrometers, bore gauges and a height gauge before release. Reduced average changeover from 74 minutes to 41 by building a staged tooling cart and standard setup sheet for the six highest-volume part numbers.

Cell lead adaptable resume summary example

Lead setup operator running a five-machine milling and turning cell of Haas, Fanuc and Okuma controls, setting up every job on the cell and programming simple 2.5D parts at the control and in Fusion 360. Run first-article checks for the cell, sign off other operators on setup steps, and own the tooling and offset library. Took cell scrap from 3.1% to 1.2% and lifted spindle utilization from 58% to 74% over two years by cutting changeover time and standardizing work-holding.

Right vs wrong: the same machine operator summary, twice

✅ Right❌ Wrong
CNC setter and operator on 3-axis vertical machining centers, Haas Next Generation Control and Fanuc 0i-MF.Experienced machine operator with knowledge of CNC machinery.

Cut average changeover from 74 minutes to 41 across the six highest-volume part numbers.Hardworking and reliable with a strong attention to detail.

The right column can be costed. A supervisor knows what a 33-minute changeover saving is worth on six part numbers. The left column cannot be costed, so it is read as a tender.

Outline your machine operator experience

Employer, what the plant makes, plant size and dates. Then three to five bullets. Each bullet names a machine, a material or a part, and carries a number.

Adaptable resume employment history example

CNC Setter and Operator, Kettle Moraine Precision Machining, Sturtevant, WI, June 2021 to Present. Contract machine shop, 85 employees, aerospace and hydraulic components.

Set up and run two 3-axis vertical machining centers, Haas Next Generation Control and Fanuc 0i-MF, on aluminum 6061 and 4140 steel to print tolerances down to plus or minus 0.0005 in.

Do my own setups: work offsets, tool offsets, tool changes, work-holding and fixture build, program edits at the control, and first-piece proving.

Cut average changeover from 74 minutes to 41 across the six highest-volume part numbers by building a staged tooling cart and a standard setup sheet.

Run first-piece and in-process inspection with micrometers, bore gauges and a height gauge, and log results on the inspection sheet before release.

Tend both machines simultaneously on longer cycles, averaging 240 to 380 parts a shift depending on the part family.

Setup or operate: say which, and name the control

This is the single biggest split in the occupation, and most resumes leave the reader to guess.

Tending a machine means loading, unloading, watching, gauging to a check sheet, and calling someone when it goes wrong. Setting a machine up means taking a job from a drawing to a good first piece: work-holding, tooling, work offsets, tool offsets, feeds and speeds, program edits at the control, and the first-article check that says the job can run. Everything above tender pay is on the second list.

So write four things and write them plainly.

The machine type. 3-axis vertical machining center, CNC lathe or turning center, Swiss-type lathe, turret punch, press brake, OBI or hydraulic press, injection moulding press, surface grinder. "Machinery" is not a machine type.

The control and platform. Fanuc, Haas, Siemens Sinumerik, Mazatrol, Okuma OSP, Heidenhain. Give the specific control where you know it. A shop running Fanuc controls treats Fanuc experience as a shorter ramp-up, and that is a real hiring consideration rather than snobbery.

What you do at that control. This is the sentence that moves the file. Do you load and cycle start only; do you set offsets and change tools; do you edit programs; do you write them? Say it in those words. "Set work and tool offsets, change tooling and edit programs at the control" is unambiguous, checkable and worth money.

The numbers. Tolerance held, cycle time, scrap or reject rate, changeover time, parts per shift, and how many machines you tend at once. Multi-machine tending is a genuine skill and is almost never claimed: "tend three machines on cycles over eight minutes" tells a supervisor exactly how to staff you.

Adaptable resume machines and controls block example

Machines: 3-axis vertical machining centers (Haas VF-2, VF-4), CNC lathe (Haas ST-20), turret punch, 60-ton and 110-ton OBI presses, injection moulding press

Controls: Haas Next Generation Control, Fanuc 0i-MF, Siemens Sinumerik 828D, Okuma OSP; some Mazatrol conversational

Setup scope: work offsets and tool offsets, tool presetting and changes, work-holding and soft jaw turning, fixture build, program edits at the control, 2.5D programming in Fusion 360, first-piece proving

Materials: aluminum 6061 and 7075, 4140 and 1018 steel, 304 stainless, acetal and glass-filled nylon

Tolerances and output: routinely plus or minus 0.0005 in on milled features; 240 to 380 parts a shift; tend two to three machines on cycles over eight minutes

Statistical insight

The setup ladder is where the money is, and BLS numbers show it

Within metal and plastic machine work, computer numerically controlled tool operators had a median annual wage of $50,690 in May 2025, while computer numerically controlled tool programmers had a median of $68,120 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).

That is a gap of $17,430 a year between running the program and writing it, inside the same occupational group. Grinding, lapping, polishing and buffing machine tool setters, operators and tenders sat at $46,550, and cutting, punching and press machine setters, operators and tenders at $46,330 (BLS, May 2025).

The ladder is visible in those four numbers, and every rung of it is something you can put on a resume: tend, set up, prove out, edit at the control, program offline. If you are on a rung above the one your job title suggests, the resume is the only place that will ever be recorded.

The warning is simple. A resume that says "operated machinery in a fast-paced manufacturing environment" with no control, no tolerance and no part will be read as a tender, whatever your title was, because nothing on the page contradicts that reading.

Build a snapshot of your key skills

Twelve to sixteen entries in four groups: machines and controls, setup, measurement, and shop systems.

Adaptable resume skills example

Machines and controls: 3-axis vertical machining center, CNC lathe, turret punch, OBI and hydraulic presses, injection moulding press, Haas, Fanuc, Siemens, Okuma, Mazatrol conversational

Setup and programming: Work and tool offsets, tool presetting, work-holding and soft jaws, fixture build, feeds and speeds, program editing at the control, 2.5D programming in Fusion 360, setup sheet writing

Measurement: Micrometers, calipers, bore and depth gauges, height gauge, thread and pin gauges, surface finish comparison, first-piece and in-process inspection, blueprint and GD&T reading

Shop systems and maintenance: Total productive maintenance checks, coolant concentration and way lube, tool life tracking, scrap and downtime coding, SAP and shop floor data collection, 5S, lockout tagout

List your education and certifications

Trade training first if you have it, then the plant training that maps to setup, then safety cards.

Adaptable resume education and training example

Technical Diploma, CNC Production Technology, Gateway Technical College, Racine, WI, 2019

Blueprint reading and GD&T fundamentals, Gateway Technical College, 2020

Haas Next Generation Control operator and setup training, in-plant program, 2022

Fusion 360 CAM for 2.5D milling, self-directed with employer assessment, 2024

Safety and systems: lockout tagout, forklift authorization, first aid and CPR, 2025

A formal machining program is not required to work in this trade, but it shortens the path to setup work, and it is the line that separates two identical-looking operator resumes when the shop is hiring for the setup seat.

Choose the right layout and design

Single column, 11 or 12 point, no photograph, no icons, no skill bars. Keep the machines and controls block as plain labeled lines. Agencies and manufacturers both parse these into a database, and that block is the one you cannot afford to lose.

Do

Say setup or operate in the first line of your summary. Name the machine type and the specific control. List what you do at the control, in order: offsets, tool changes, program edits, proving out. Give the tightest tolerance you routinely hold. State cycle time or parts per shift, scrap rate and changeover time. Say how many machines you tend at once and on what cycle length.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not write "operated machinery" or "various CNC machines". Do not claim setup if you only load and cycle start; the trial shift settles it in an hour. Do not leave the material off, because aluminum and 4140 are different jobs. Do not use a two-column template for an agency portal. Do not list scrap rate without the target it was measured against.

Machine operator job market and outlook

This occupation is shrinking and hiring heavily at the same time, and both facts belong in how you plan your next move.

MeasureValue
Metal and plastic machine worker jobs, 2025963,000
Projected change, 2025 to 2035-7% (decline), -63,000

Those two lines look contradictory and are not. Employment is projected to fall by 63,000 over the decade, yet about 78,100 openings a year are still expected, because openings are driven mainly by replacement need as people retire or move out of the occupation (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections). There is work. What is shrinking is the number of seats that only require tending, which is precisely why the setup half of your resume matters more each year.

What salary you can expect as a machine operator

The median annual wage for metal and plastic machine workers was $47,700, or $22.94 an hour, as of May 2025. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $36,020 and the highest 10 percent more than $69,790 (BLS, May 2025).

Sector accounts for part of the spread: machinery manufacturing paid a median of $50,210 against $44,340 in plastics and rubber products (BLS, May 2025). Role accounts for more of it. CNC tool operators sat at $50,690 and CNC tool programmers at $68,120 in the same cycle (BLS, May 2025).

So the practical route up is not a different employer, it is a different rung. Setup, proving out, editing at the control and eventually programming are all things you can start doing where you are and record as you go. The resume is where that record turns into a pay band.

Key takeaways for a machine operator resume

  1. Say setup or operate in the first line, in those words.
  2. Name the machine type and the specific control: Haas, Fanuc, Siemens, Mazatrol, Okuma.
  3. List exactly what you do at the control, from offsets through to program edits.
  4. Give the tightest tolerance you routinely hold, and the material it was in.
  5. Put cycle time or parts per shift, scrap rate against target, and changeover time on the page.
  6. Say how many machines you tend at once and on what cycle length.
  7. Add the training that shortens the path to setup, even if it was in-plant.

Machine operator resume questions, answered

How long should a machine operator resume be?

One page for your first eight years. Two once you set up a cell, program at the control or sign off other operators, because the machines and controls block plus a longer part history genuinely needs the room.

What if I only load and unload the machine?

Write that accurately and make the rest of the page work harder: parts per shift, the checks you perform and the gauges you use, scrap rate against target, jams and misfeeds you clear yourself, and any changeover step you have been shown. Then name the setup training you want. Tending is where nearly every setter started, and shops know it.

Do I need a technical diploma to get a CNC job?

No. The Bureau of Labor Statistics gives high school diploma or equivalent as the typical entry-level education for metal and plastic machine workers (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025). A diploma or an in-plant setup program matters for the step from tending to setup, which is the step that moves your pay.

Is machine operating a dying trade?

Employment is projected to fall 7 percent from 2025 to 2035, a loss of 63,000 jobs, while still generating about 78,100 openings a year through replacement need (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections). The honest reading is that pure tending roles are thinning while setup, programming and multi-machine work hold up, so the resume should push you toward that side of the split.

What numbers should I put on a machine operator resume?

Tolerance held with the material, cycle time or parts per shift, scrap or reject rate with the target it was measured against, changeover or setup time before and after, machine uptime or spindle utilization, and how many machines you run at once. Two or three of those with a time frame will outperform a paragraph describing your work ethic.
