Summary

A quality assurance resume is a one to two page document naming the quality standard your plant runs to, the inspection methods and instruments you are signed off on, the sampling plan you applied, and the level of nonconformance authority you held. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the disposition question every hiring manager is really asking, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook.

Quality Assurance resume examples by experience level

A quality assurance resume is a one to two page document that names the quality system you worked inside, the instruments and methods you are signed off on, and how far your signature went when a part failed.

That last point is the whole thing. Quality managers do not sort applications by how careful people say they are. They sort by scope: did this person find the problem, write it up, or decide what happened to the parts. Those are three jobs at three pay grades, and "strong attention to detail" answers none of them.

Resume guide for a quality assurance resume

This guide and the corresponding quality assurance resume example will cover:

  • How to write a quality assurance resume, section by section
  • Which quality standard, instruments and sampling plan belong on the page
  • Three adaptable summaries: incoming inspector, quality technician and quality assurance supervisor
  • What disposition authority means and how to state yours without overclaiming
  • What the job market looks like and what you can expect to earn

How to write a quality assurance resume

Six sections: contact header, summary, quality systems and inspection scope, work experience, education and certifications, and skills. One page for your first five years, two once you own an audit schedule or sit on a material review board.

The quality systems block goes high, directly under the summary, because it is the filter. A plant running IATF 16949 for automotive customers reads a resume differently from a shop running AS9100 for aerospace, and both differ again from a contract manufacturer on plain ISO 9001:2015.

SectionWhat it is answeringWhere it goes
Quality systemWhich standard did this person work to?Directly under the summary
Inspection scopeWhich instruments is this person signed off on?Its own block, instruments named
Disposition authorityCould they raise, disposition or only flag?In the summary, repeated in bullets
Work experienceWhat did they catch, and what did it save?Reverse chronological, with numbers
Expert Tip

Say which standard, then say what you were allowed to sign

Two sentences do most of the work on a quality resume.

The first names the system: "Plant ran to IATF 16949:2016 with customer-specific requirements for two tier one automotive accounts."

The second names your ceiling: "Raised nonconformance reports, presented at weekly material review board, and held sign-off authority for use-as-is and rework up to 500 pieces; scrap and return-to-supplier decisions went to the quality manager."

A hiring manager can staff a shift from those two sentences, and nothing at all from "responsible for ensuring product quality".

Run the finished file through the free Rezoom ATS resume checker before you submit. Manufacturers parse applications into a system before a human opens them, and a two-column inspection table is the thing that parses badly.

Choosing the best resume format for a quality assurance resume

Reverse chronological. Quality is a field where continuity is the credential: how long you stayed, which standards you saw through a surveillance audit, whether you were still there when the corrective action closed.

A functional format hides the sequence, and the sequence is what tells a quality manager whether you have lived through an external audit or a customer escape. One page through your first five years; two once you own an internal audit schedule, a gauge calibration system or a supplier corrective action program.

Put the certification body's name in full the first time. ASQ is the American Society for Quality, and a quality manager reads CQI, CQA and CQE as three different things.

Make use of a summary

Four lines: your role and the standard, the products and tolerances, the instruments, and your disposition level with one number attached.

Incoming inspector adaptable resume summary example

Incoming inspector at a fabricated metal supplier working to ISO 9001:2015, checking roughly 40 receiving lots a week across laser-cut, formed and welded steel components. Signed off on calipers, micrometers, height gauge, pin and thread gauges, and optical comparator, and read GD&T from customer prints to ASME Y14.5. Apply ANSI/ASQ Z1.4 sampling at the levels set in the inspection plan, raise nonconformance reports for supplier discrepancies, and route every disposition decision to the quality technician on shift.

Quality technician adaptable resume summary example

Quality technician running first-article and in-process inspection in an IATF 16949:2016 automotive supply plant, covering machined and stamped components with print tolerances down to plus or minus 0.0005 in. Program and run a bridge CMM for first-article layouts, complete PPAP dimensional results, and lead gauge repeatability and reproducibility studies on 12 production gauges a year. Raise and investigate nonconformance reports, present findings at material review board, and hold rework and use-as-is disposition authority within documented limits.

Quality assurance supervisor adaptable resume summary example

Quality assurance supervisor owning the ISO 9001:2015 internal audit schedule and chairing the material review board for a 240-person fabrication and assembly plant. Run a 22-audit annual program across every clause and process, close corrective actions to root cause, and hold full disposition authority including scrap and return to supplier. Cut customer complaints from 31 to 9 a year over three years and carried the site through two surveillance audits and one recertification with no major nonconformities.

Right vs wrong: the same quality assurance summary, twice

✅ Right❌ Wrong
Quality technician in an IATF 16949:2016 automotive supply plant, machined and stamped components to plus or minus 0.0005 in.Detail-oriented quality professional with manufacturing experience.
Program and run a bridge CMM for first-article layouts and complete PPAP dimensional results.Perform inspections using various measuring equipment.
Hold rework and use-as-is disposition authority within documented limits; scrap decisions go to the quality manager.Ensure products meet quality standards and specifications.

The right column can be slotted into a shift and a scope. The left column cannot, and a quality manager reading thirty files reads for scope.

Outline your quality assurance experience

Employer, sector, plant size, the standard the site ran to, and dates. Then three to five bullets, each naming a part, a method or a system, and each carrying a number.

Adaptable resume employment history example

Quality Assurance Supervisor, Tuscarawas Valley Manufacturing, Akron, OH, March 2019 to Present. Fabrication and assembly plant, 240 employees, ISO 9001:2015 certified.

Own the internal audit schedule: 22 audits a year covering every clause and every value-stream process, with findings tracked to closure in the corrective action log.

Chair the material review board and hold full disposition authority, including use-as-is, rework, scrap and return to supplier, on an average of 60 nonconformance reports a year.

Cut customer complaints from 31 a year to 9 over three years by moving eight recurring defects into first-article and in-process checks.

Train and sign off inspectors on gauge use, and run the annual gauge repeatability and reproducibility program.

Name the quality system you worked under and the disposition authority you held

This is the section almost every quality resume leaves out, and it is the one that decides which pile the file goes in.

"Attention to detail" is not a qualification. Four things are, and a quality manager is looking for all four before they read a single bullet.

The standard the site ran to. ISO 9001:2015 is the general quality management system. IATF 16949:2016 sits on top of it for automotive production and adds customer-specific requirements. AS9100 covers aerospace, defense and space. A candidate who has only worked to a general ISO 9001 system is not disqualified from an automotive plant, but the plant needs to know it. Name the standard, and whether you were on site for a surveillance or recertification audit.

The instruments and methods you are signed off on. Not "measuring equipment". The list: calipers, micrometers, bore and depth gauges, height gauge, surface plate work, pin and thread gauges, hardness tester, optical comparator, coordinate measuring machine, and whether you program the CMM or only run existing routines. Then the methods: first-article, in-process, final and layout inspection, and gauge repeatability and reproducibility studies.

Whether you read GD&T off a print. Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing to ASME Y14.5 separates an inspector who measures a dimension from one who understands what the drawing controls. If you can interpret a feature control frame and set the part to the drawing's datums, that belongs on the page in those words.

The sampling plan you applied. ANSI/ASQ Z1.4 at the inspection level and acceptable quality limit set in the plan, 100 percent inspection, or a control-chart-driven in-process check. State which. Then state your ceiling, because that is the part that sets pay.

Adaptable resume quality systems and authority block example

Quality system: ISO 9001:2015 certified site; previously IATF 16949:2016 with customer-specific requirements for two tier one automotive accounts.

Inspection scope: first article, in-process, final and layout inspection. Calipers, micrometers, bore and depth gauges, height gauge and surface plate, pin and thread gauges, Rockwell hardness tester, optical comparator, bridge CMM including programming.

Drawings: GD&T interpretation to ASME Y14.5, including position, profile, runout and datum reference frames.

Sampling: ANSI/ASQ Z1.4 to the inspection level and AQL set in the customer inspection plan; 100 percent inspection on safety-critical characteristics.

Disposition authority: raise and investigate nonconformance reports; chair material review board; full disposition authority for use-as-is, rework, scrap and return to supplier. Previously limited to rework and use-as-is within documented piece limits.

Three levels of authority exist, and naming yours precisely matters because overclaiming is settled in the first ten minutes of a reference call.

LevelWhat it meansHow to write it
FlagYou identify and escalate; someone else writes the paperwork"Identified and escalated out-of-tolerance conditions to the quality technician on shift"
Raise and investigateYou write the nonconformance report and run the containment and root cause work"Raised 84 nonconformance reports and investigated 31 to root cause using 5 why and fishbone"
DispositionYour signature decides what happens to the parts"Held disposition authority for use-as-is, rework, scrap and return to supplier as material review board chair"

Write the level you actually held. A resume that claims "quality" with no standard, no instrument list and no disposition level reads as a line inspector to every hiring manager who opens it, whatever the job title on the page says.

Expert Tip

The ASQ inspector certification has an experience clock, and a diploma shortens it

The American Society for Quality lists the eligibility requirement for the Certified Quality Inspector as three years of on-the-job experience in one or more areas of the Certified Quality Inspector Body of Knowledge, in full-time paid roles. A technical, military or trade school diploma, or an associate, bachelor's, master's or doctorate degree, waives two of those three years (ASQ certification page, read 12 September 2026).

The computer-based exam is 110 questions, 100 of them scored, with four hours and eighteen minutes of exam time; the paper version is 100 questions in four hours. Both are open book (ASQ, September 2026).

Two things follow. If you hold a trade school diploma or an associate degree, say so even where the job asks only for a high school diploma, because it pulls your eligibility forward by two years. And if you are inside the clock rather than certified, write the honest version: "Eligible for ASQ Certified Quality Inspector, sitting the exam in the first quarter of 2027." That reads as a plan; "working toward certification" reads as nothing.

Choose the right layout and design

Single column, 11 or 12 point, no photograph, no skill bars, no icons. Put the quality systems and inspection scope block in plain labeled lines rather than a table, because tables collapse unpredictably inside applicant tracking systems and this is the block you cannot afford to lose.

Do

Name the standard the site ran to, and say whether you were there for an external audit. List every instrument you are signed off on by name. State whether you program the CMM or run existing routines. Say plainly which dispositions your signature covered and which went above you. Put the tightest tolerance you routinely held on the page. Give the number of nonconformance reports you raised and how many you closed to root cause.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not write "attention to detail" anywhere; every file in the folder says it. Do not write "measuring equipment" when you mean six named instruments. Do not claim material review board authority you did not hold, because a reference call establishes it in one question. Do not list a lapsed certification without dating it. Do not use a two-column template for a manufacturer's portal. Do not describe a customer escape without saying what changed afterwards.

Quality assurance job market and outlook

Statistical insight

Two thirds of these jobs sit in manufacturing, but the best paid ones do not

Manufacturing employs 64 percent of quality control inspectors, with professional, scientific and technical services at 10 percent, administrative and support services at 7 percent, and wholesale trade at 6 percent (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).

The pay ranking runs the other way. Professional, scientific and technical services pays a median of $52,350, manufacturing $49,270, wholesale trade $47,190, and administrative and support services $37,380 (BLS, May 2025).

That $14,970 spread between the top and bottom industries is wider than most people expect, and administrative and support services is where agency and temporary inspection work sits. If you are placed through an agency, the resume that gets you out of that band is the one proving you can be trusted with a disposition.

For context, the whole production occupations group had a median annual wage of $46,990 in May 2025 and is projected to show little or no change from 2025 to 2035, with about 867,700 openings a year across the group (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections). Quality control inspection is one of the few parts of that group with positive projected growth.

What salary you can expect as a quality assurance inspector

The median annual wage for quality control inspectors was $48,570, or $23.35 an hour, as of May 2025. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $35,510 and the highest 10 percent more than $77,860 (BLS, May 2025).

That top decile is more than double the bottom, and the gap is not seniority alone. Three things move a quality wage: the sector and its standard, the metrology you can do unsupervised, and whether your signature carries a disposition. An inspector who programs a CMM, runs a capability study and chairs a material review board in an aerospace or automotive plant is not competing in the same market as a visual inspector on a packaging line, though both sit inside the same 602,000.

Your resume is where those three levers become visible, and every one of them is checkable, which is exactly why they are worth more on the page than any adjective.

Key takeaways for a quality assurance resume

  1. Name the quality standard the site ran to: ISO 9001:2015, IATF 16949:2016 or AS9100.
  2. List the instruments you are signed off on by name, and say whether you program the CMM.
  3. Say whether you read GD&T to ASME Y14.5 off the print.
  4. State the sampling plan and the tightest tolerance you routinely held.
  5. Write your disposition level exactly: flag, raise and investigate, or disposition.
  6. Put a number on nonconformance reports raised, corrective actions closed and defects reduced.
  7. Add the ASQ Certified Quality Inspector credential, or the date you will sit it.

Quality assurance resume questions, answered

How long should a quality assurance resume be?

One page for your first five years as an inspector; two once you own an internal audit schedule, a gauge calibration system or a supplier corrective action program. The quality systems and inspection scope block is worth the space it takes. The objective statement is not.

What if I only inspect and never disposition anything?

Write that, precisely. "Identified and escalated out-of-tolerance conditions; disposition held by the quality engineer" is honest and it is what the job was. Inflating it costs you the offer at reference stage. What lifts a flag-level resume is the metrology: the instruments, the tolerances, the sampling plan, the volume you got through.

Do I need ASQ certification to get a quality job?

No. The Bureau of Labor Statistics gives high school diploma or equivalent as the typical entry-level education for quality control inspectors (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025). Certification matters for the step up. ASQ requires three years of on-the-job experience in the Certified Quality Inspector Body of Knowledge, reduced by two years if you hold a technical, military or trade school diploma or a degree (ASQ, read 12 September 2026).

Should I list ISO 9001 if I only worked under it rather than auditing it?

Yes, and say which it was. "Worked in an ISO 9001:2015 certified plant" and "owned the ISO 9001:2015 internal audit schedule" are both useful, and they are clearly different claims. Quality managers respect the smaller accurate claim and distrust the larger vague one.

How do I move from production into quality assurance?

Use the production experience as inspection evidence: the parts you ran, the tolerances you held, the gauges you used at the machine, the first-piece checks you performed. Then add the two things a quality department cannot see from a production record: a GD&T course and a documented gauge sign-off. Incoming inspection is the usual entry point.
