A forklift operator resume is a one page document that names the trucks you have been evaluated on, the attachments you have run, the heights and weights you work at, and how much you have damaged.

Almost every resume in this occupation opens with the same two words: OSHA certified. They are the weakest two words on the page, and they are slightly wrong. Under federal rules it is the employer who certifies the operator, not OSHA, and the certification belongs to the site that issued it. A warehouse manager knows this, and what they want instead is which trucks you can be put on tomorrow and whether you have ever put a fork through a rack upright.

How to write a forklift operator resume

Five sections: contact header, summary, equipment and evaluations, experience, and skills with education last. One page, because everything that decides the hire fits in one.

The equipment block goes directly under the summary. It is the section a warehouse manager scans first, and on most resumes it does not exist at all.

Choosing the best resume format for a forklift operator resume

Reverse chronological, one page, single column. Warehouse hiring reads for continuity and equipment; a functional format hides the first and buries the second.

Keep the header tight and put the equipment block high on the page. If you have moved between agency assignments, group them under the agency name with the sites beneath, because a list of eleven two-month jobs reads as instability when it is really one contract.

Include your contact information

Two lines under your name do more work than a whole summary paragraph. The trucks and the height are the facts a shift manager is looking for.

Forklift operator with two years on sit-down counterbalance trucks in a food distribution dock operation, evaluated on both propane and electric counterbalance under my employer's powered industrial truck program. Load and unload 22 to 28 trailers a shift with pallets to 3,200 pounds, using standard forks and a single-double handler. Two years with no recordable incident, no rack damage and no product damage claim, and I run my own pre-shift inspection and propane cylinder change.

Outline your operating experience

Site, employer, city, dates, then the trucks, then three to five bullets. Every bullet should carry a number: trailers, pallets, cases, height, weight, rate or damage.

Your certification is the employer's, not yours: list the truck classes and attachments instead

This is the single most misunderstood thing in the occupation, and getting it right on the page separates you from most of the pile.

Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(l), the employer must certify that each powered industrial truck operator has been trained and evaluated, and that certification has to record the operator's name, the date of the training, the date of the evaluation, and the identity of the person or persons who performed them. The regulation also requires an evaluation of each operator's performance at least once every three years.

Two consequences follow. First, the certification is site-specific and employer-specific: it does not travel with you the way a driving license does, because it certifies that a particular employer trained and evaluated you on their trucks in their workplace. A new employer runs their own evaluation, and your prior training shortens that program rather than replacing it, since the employer need not repeat training on topics you have already covered and can demonstrate competency in.

Second, because the paper does not transfer, the useful information is what sits underneath it: the equipment, the environment and the record.

Say propane or electric, because the rule does

OSHA's paragraph (b) sorts powered industrial trucks into designations including D, DS, DY, E, ES, EE, EX, G, GS, LP and LPS, which distinguish diesel, electric and liquefied petroleum gas trucks and the safety features fitted to them. Sites choose from those designations based on what they store and how they ventilate, which is why "propane versus electric" is a genuine hiring question rather than a detail.

A food plant, a freezer and an enclosed cooler normally run electrics; a yard or a high-throughput dock may run propane. Writing "electric and propane sit-down counterbalance" tells a manager you fit either, in seven words.

Name the refresher triggers you have been through

Refresher training and re-evaluation are required after events such as an accident, a near miss, an observed unsafe operation, an unsatisfactory evaluation, or assignment to a different type of truck (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(l)).

That last one is the ordinary reason for retraining and nothing to hide. If you moved from counterbalance to reach truck and were re-evaluated, say so plainly: it is evidence of range, not of a problem.

Build a snapshot of your key skills

Ten to fourteen entries in three groups: equipment and handling, systems, and safety and maintenance. Keep them concrete.

Load capacity and data plate reading earns its place on that list: derating capacity when an attachment is fitted separates an operator who was trained properly from one who was shown where the levers are.

List your education and certifications

Education comes last and stays short. No formal educational credential is typically required to enter this occupation, though employers may prefer a high school diploma (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2026).

Notice the phrasing on the evaluations line. It states what is verifiable rather than claiming a portable credential, and a warehouse manager reading it sees an operator who understands the rule.

Single column, 11 or 12 point body text, one page, no photograph, no graphics. Put the equipment block above the fold. Save as PDF and name the file for yourself and the role.

Forklift operator job market and outlook

A very large occupation with slow growth and high turnover, which means constant hiring and a market where equipment breadth decides who moves up.

Growth of 1 percent sounds like a closed market until you read the openings line. About 70,700 openings a year against 12,000 of net growth means almost all hiring here is replacement. Employers hire constantly, so the competition is other applicants rather than scarcity of jobs, and that is exactly the market in which a specific equipment list wins.

What salary you can expect as a forklift operator

Industrial truck and tractor operators had a median annual wage of $46,420 as of May 2025. Across the wider material moving machine operators group the median was $46,670 a year, with the lowest 10 percent earning less than $36,900 and the highest 10 percent more than $64,230 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025).

Three things move you up that range, and all three belong on the resume.

Sector is the largest. Construction had a median of $71,070 as of May 2025 against $38,130 in temporary help services, a gap of more than $30,000 for work that uses the same core skills (BLS, May 2025). If you are on an agency assignment, your equipment block is the argument for a direct hire.

Equipment is the second. Turret and very narrow aisle work, order picking at height and clamp handling are specialized, and sites that need them pay to keep operators who have them.

Shift and environment are the third. Freezer work, weekend nights and third shift usually carry a differential, and none of it is negotiated if the resume never said you have done it.
