Summary

A student teacher resume is a one page document that writes your clinical placement as a job rather than as coursework: the campus, the grade levels, the preps, the roster size, the hours, the performance assessment you passed, and the two educators who observed you. This guide gives you three adaptable versions and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook.

Student Teacher resume examples by experience level

A student teacher resume is a one page document that presents your clinical placement as employment: one campus, one set of grade levels, a named course load, a roster size, a fixed number of weeks, and a supervising teacher who will confirm all of it.

That framing is the whole job of the page. Most student teaching resumes fail because they file the placement under education, as a line beneath the degree. A principal reading for an August vacancy does not want a transcript. They want to know whether you have stood in front of thirty adolescents five times a day for a semester, and whether anyone qualified watched.

Resume guide for a student teacher resume

This guide and the corresponding student teacher resume example will cover:

  • How to write a student teacher resume when the placement is your only job
  • Where the placement goes, and why it is not under education
  • Three adaptable summaries: field experience, clinical semester, post-placement
  • What edTPA proves and how to show it
  • The market you are entering and what a first contract pays

How to write a student teacher resume

Six sections: contact header, summary, certification status, clinical placement, education, and skills. One page. There is no version of this document that needs two, and the order matters because the reader is checking a sequence of gates before anything else.

SectionWhat it is answeringWhere it goes
Certification statusCan I offer a contract, and from when?Under the summary, with the date
Clinical placementHave they run a classroom, or visited one?Under experience, as a job
Hours and sign-offsDid a trained supervisor sign this off?Inside the placement entry
EducationWhich programme, area and exams? After the placement
Expert Tip

File the placement under experience, never under education

This is the most common structural mistake on a student teaching resume, and it is invisible to the person making it.

Your degree programme goes under education. Your clinical placement goes under experience, formatted like any other job: title, school, district, city, dates, then bullets. The title is "Student Teacher" or the one your state uses, such as "Teacher Candidate" or "Clinical Intern".

The reason is mechanical. A principal scanning for classroom time reads the experience block and stops. Classroom time buried inside a degree entry reads as no classroom time at all.

Run the finished file through the free Rezoom ATS resume checker before you apply. District portals parse applications before a human opens them, and a placement filed under education often parses as coursework.

Choosing the best resume format for a student teacher resume

Reverse chronological, one page. A functional or skills-based resume looks like a solution when you have one placement to your name, and it is a trap: it reads as someone hiding the absence of classroom time. If your placement is short or still running, the fix is depth inside the entry, not a change of format. Five detailed bullets about one semester read as a semester of work. Three vague bullets read as a visit.

Put your certification area and eligibility date in the header. A principal filling an August vacancy works backwards from a contract date, and "eligible May 2026" answers that without a phone call.

Make use of a summary

Four lines: your certification area, where you placed, what you carried, and one measured change in your own sections.

Completed 60 full days of clinical practice under an ADEPT-trained cooperating teacher, with 6 formal observations and 2 summative evaluations.

Name your hours, your sign-offs and the two people who watched you teach

This block exists only on a student teacher resume, and it is what converts a placement into evidence. You have something no other entry-level applicant has: a documented, supervised, state-regulated record of classroom performance, signed by two qualified educators. Almost nobody puts it on the page.

Hours and length. States set these and they differ. South Carolina requires undergraduate candidates to complete at least 100 hours of field experience before clinical practice, then clinical practice of at least twelve weeks or 60 full days, including at least 10 full days of independent teaching in one setting; graduate candidates need at least 75 field hours (South Carolina Department of Education, Field and Clinical Experience Requirements). Write your real numbers: a principal in your state knows the floor and can see whether you cleared it.

The observation record. The same rules require at least four observations during clinical practice, two by the institutional supervisor and two by the cooperating teacher, plus a summative evaluation from each. If you had more than the minimum, say so. Six observations reads differently from four.

The performance assessment. edTPA is a subject-specific portfolio from the Stanford Center for Assessment, Learning and Equity, built on three tasks: Planning for Instruction and Assessment, Instruction, and Assessment. Candidates submit lesson plans, unedited video of themselves teaching a real class, and analysed student work samples, in versions for 28 teaching fields (edTPA, SCALE). Most handbooks carry 15 rubrics scored on a five-point scale to a maximum of 75, with a recommended performance standard range of 37 to 42 points (edTPA Recommended Professional Performance Standard). Thirteen states and jurisdictions require a state-approved performance assessment with edTPA among those approved, South Carolina, California, Illinois, North Carolina, Ohio and Tennessee among them (edTPA state policy overview). If your state uses a different instrument, name that one.

The two references. Between them, your cooperating teacher and your university supervisor watched you teach for a semester and wrote it down. Name them, with titles and school or department. Ask first.

Adaptable resume clinical record example

Clinical record: 60 full days of clinical practice, January to May 2026, plus 112 documented field hours across two campuses. Independent responsibility for the full timetable in weeks 6 through 16.

Supervision: 6 formal observations, 4 by the cooperating teacher and 2 by the university supervisor, plus 2 summative evaluations. Both evaluators ADEPT trained.

Performance assessment: edTPA Secondary History and Social Studies, 48 of 75, passed May 2026.

Assessment and data: Common assessment writing, Item analysis, Formative checks and reteaching cycles, End-of-course review design

Systems and tools: Canvas, PowerSchool, Google Workspace for Education, District data dashboards

Professional: Classroom management under a schoolwide behaviour system, Family conferences, IEP and 504 accommodation implementation, FERPA-compliant record handling

List your education and certifications

Certification first with its area and date, then the degree, then the exams if the scores help you.

Bachelor of Arts, History, with Secondary Education Certification, University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC, May 2026.

Assessments: edTPA Secondary History and Social Studies, 48 of 75, May 2026. Praxis Subject Assessment, Social Studies Content Knowledge, passed 2025.

Additional: CPR and first aid, American Red Cross, 2026.

Do not list individual education courses; a principal has taken them. The exception is an unusual specialisation, such as a reading endorsement or a gifted and talented certificate, which changes what you can be assigned.

Choose the right layout and design

Single column, plain type at 11 or 12 point, clear headings, no photograph, no skills bars. District applicant systems read these into a structured record before a person does, and columns and graphics break it.

Do

File the placement under experience with a job title, dates and bullets. Give your roster size, your preps and the weeks you taught independently. Put your certification area and eligibility date in the header. Name the performance assessment and the score if it is good. List your cooperating teacher and supervisor as references, after asking them.

Iconly/Bold/Close Square Don’t

Do not write "assisted", "observed" or "helped" as the verb of a bullet; they describe a visitor. Do not bury the placement in the education section. Do not list your education coursework. Do not claim a certificate you have not been recommended for, because human resources verifies it before the principal calls.

Student teacher job market and outlook

You are not applying into the student teacher market. You are applying into the teacher market, one year out, and the numbers that matter belong to the certification you are about to hold.

Statistical insight

The vacancies are real, and they moved fast

South Carolina districts reported 706 vacant teaching positions for 2025 to 2026, down from 1,043 the previous year and from a historic high of 1,613 in 2023 to 2024 (CERRA South Carolina Annual Educator Supply and Demand Report, 26 November 2025). Nationally, for 2024 to 2025, special education was reported in shortage by 45 states, science by 41 and mathematics by 40, with 48 states reporting a shortage in at least one of the three (Learning Policy Institute, July 2025).

Two things follow. The vacancy picture is improving in some states, so a placement written as coursework no longer coasts through on scarcity. And the shortage sits in specific certification areas, so if yours is one of them it belongs in the first line of the page, not in the education block at the bottom.

What salary you can expect after student teaching

Student teaching is normally unpaid, because it is a programme requirement rather than employment. The number that matters is what the first contract pays.

The median annual wage was $72,040 for high school teachers and $64,370 for middle school teachers as of May 2025, but a median is a mid-career figure. A first-year teacher starts at step one of a district salary schedule, so the honest reference point is the bottom of the distribution: the lowest 10 percent of high school teachers earned less than $48,780 and of middle school teachers less than $48,080 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025). Public schools pay a median of $74,190 against $61,810 in private schools (BLS, May 2025).

What a resume can move is your placement on that schedule. Many districts credit a long-term substitute assignment, a master's degree or a shortage-area certification, and those credits are awarded against documentation submitted at hiring, not later. Listing the substitute assignment with its exact dates and section count is what gets it counted.

Key takeaways for a student teacher resume

  1. Put the placement under experience with a job title and dates, never under education.
  2. Give the roster size, the number of preps and the weeks you taught independently.
  3. Lead with your certification area and eligibility date, because that is the contract question.
  4. Name the performance assessment and the score, and state your field hours and clinical days against your state's floor.
  5. Say how many observations you had and who made them.
  6. Name your cooperating teacher and university supervisor as references, with permission.
  7. Keep it to one page and make every bullet carry a number.

Student teacher resume questions, answered

Is student teaching considered work experience on a resume?

Yes, and it should be formatted as work experience. It is supervised, evaluated, full-time classroom practice with defined dates and a named campus. Give it a job title, a school, a district and bullets. Filing it under education is the most common reason a strong candidate reads as an inexperienced one.

How long should a student teacher resume be?

One page. You have one placement, a degree and a certification, and anything past that is padding a principal reading forty files in June will notice.

Should I put my edTPA score on my resume?

Put the pass and the handbook name always, and the numeric score if it is comfortably above the standard. Most handbooks have 15 rubrics scored on a five-point scale to a maximum of 75, with a recommended performance standard range of 37 to 42 points (edTPA Recommended Professional Performance Standard). A score near the floor is better left as "passed".

Who should I use as references as a student teacher?

Your cooperating teacher first, then your university supervisor, then a campus administrator if one observed you. Between the first two you have a semester of documented observation by two trained evaluators. Ask permission and tell them which post you applied for.

Can I apply for teaching jobs before my certificate is issued?

Yes, and most new graduates do. Districts hire on the programme recommendation and the expected issue date, then hold the contract against verification. Write "eligible May 2026" in your header and be exact, because human resources works to that date.
