Summary
An English teacher resume is a one to two page document that has to work harder than a maths or science one, because English is not a shortage subject. This guide gives you three adaptable versions, the second endorsement and elective that decide most English hires, and current Bureau of Labor Statistics pay and outlook for secondary teaching.
English Teacher resume examples by experience level
An English teacher resume is a one to two page document naming your licence, your grade band, the courses you teach, and the second thing you can be scheduled for when the English sections are already covered.
That last clause is the whole problem. English is one of the few secondary subjects where a principal usually has a choice of candidates, so a resume that only says "I teach English well" is competing on a claim every file in the pile makes.
Resume guide for an English teacher resume
This guide and the corresponding English teacher resume example will cover:
- How to write an English teacher resume, section by section
- What gets you hired when the subject is not in shortage
- Three adaptable summaries: new, experienced and department lead
- How to put a writing load on the page so it reads as workload
- What the job market looks like and what you can expect to earn
How to write an English teacher resume
Six sections: contact header, summary, licensure and endorsements, teaching experience, courses and electives, education, skills. One page for your first five years, two once you have run AP, built an elective or led a department.
| Section | What it is answering | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Licence and endorsements | What can this person legally be scheduled for? | Under the summary |
| Courses and electives | What else does this close on my master schedule? | Its own block |
| Activity you would sponsor | Who runs the newspaper, yearbook or debate team next year? | End of the experience entry |
Put your student load and your writing volume on the page
English is a workload subject, and the workload is the part nobody writes down.
The National Council of Teachers of English has held the same position since 1960 and restated it in Why Class Size Matters Today: "secondary teachers of English should teach a maximum of 100 students per day" (NCTE, April 2014). Very few secondary English teachers are under that number, and the gap between the recommendation and reality is the actual job.
So write the real figure. "5 sections, 3 preps, 128 students" tells a principal what you have carried. Then add the writing: how many pieces of extended writing you take in per student a year, whether you run a portfolio, whether you conference. A candidate who can describe a marking system has thought about the part of the job that makes people leave it.
Run the finished file through the free Rezoom ATS resume checker before you submit, because large districts parse applications into a system before a human opens them.
Choosing the best resume format for an English teacher resume
Reverse chronological. One page for your first five years, two once the course list and a leadership line earn it. Functional formats fail twice here. A principal reads a teaching resume for continuity, and an English hiring committee usually includes the department chair, who reads for craft. A broken timeline and abstract skills clusters read badly to both.
Proofread it three times and have somebody else read it once. Fair or not, a typographical error on an English teacher's resume is read as evidence.

Put the certificate number on the page: human resources verifies it anyway, and a file that lets them do it in ten seconds moves faster. Put the second endorsement in the header line.
Make use of a summary
Four lines: grade band and licence, years, the courses and electives you carry, and one outcome with a number.

Took AP English Language enrolment from 31 to 72 by opening the course to any student who asked, with the qualifying rate rising from 44% to 63% across four cohorts. Advise the student newspaper, hold an ESOL endorsement, and carry 5 sections and 128 students.
English department chair with 15 years teaching secondary English and 5 leading a team of 9 on a 1,400-student campus. Rebuilt the Grades 9 to 12 writing sequence around a common portfolio, moving the share of seniors meeting the district writing benchmark from 64% to 81% over three years. Hire and mentor English staff, write the department budget, and still teach 2 sections of AP English Literature.
Right vs wrong: the same English teacher summary, twice
| ✅ Right | ❌ Wrong |
|---|---|
| High school English teacher with seven years in a comprehensive 1,400-student campus. | Passionate educator with a lifelong love of literature. |
| Teaching AP English Language, English 11 and a journalism elective; 5 sections, 128 students. | Experienced teaching a range of English courses at high school level. |
| Took AP English Language enrolment from 31 to 72 with the qualifying rate rising from 44% to 63%. | Committed to helping students find their voice. |
The right column can be scheduled. The left column can only be admired, and nobody builds a timetable out of admiration.
Outline your English teaching experience
School, district, city, grade levels, courses, student load and dates. Then three to five bullets, each naming a course or cohort and carrying a number.
| Instead of | Use |
|---|---|
| Taught English to high school students | Taught 5 sections across AP English Language, English 11 and Journalism I: 3 preps, 128 students |
| Improved student writing | Moved the share of Grade 11 students meeting the district writing benchmark from 58% to 74% over two years |
English Teacher, Grades 10 to 12, Eastwick High School, Portland Public Schools, Portland, ME, August 2019 to Present
Teach AP English Language and Composition, English 11 and Journalism I, 5 sections and 3 preps, 128 students a year.
Took AP English Language enrolment from 31 to 72 by removing prerequisite screening; the qualifying rate rose from 44% to 63% across four cohorts.
Run a portfolio system with 12 tracked pieces of extended writing per student a year and two conference cycles a term; Grade 11 district writing benchmark attainment moved from 58% to 74%.
Advise the student newspaper, which grew from 9 staff and 4 print issues a year to 24 staff and 8, and now runs its own site.
Wrote the department's Grade 9 to 10 writing handoff, adopted across both district high schools.
What gets an English teacher hired when the subject is not in shortage
This is the section that decides English hires, and almost nobody writes it.
English is not among the subjects most states report in shortage, which means signing bonuses, loan forgiveness and fast-track alternative certification are mostly pointed elsewhere, and you are usually one of several qualified applicants for one section.
So the page has to answer a different question. Not "can you teach English", which is assumed, but "what else does hiring you solve". Four things do that, in roughly this order of value.
A second endorsement. The single largest change you can make to your own market. ESOL, special education, reading specialist, social studies and world languages each put you into a second column of the master schedule. Write it in the header, not on page two.
An elective you can build and staff. Journalism, yearbook, creative writing, film and literature, public speaking, debate, theatre, and in many districts a dual credit composition section. Electives fill seats and generate credit, so a teacher who arrives able to run one closes two problems at once.
AP, and specifically the right AP. AP English Language and Composition is the biggest course in the programme: among 2025 graduates it had the largest number of first-time exam takers of any AP course, in a cohort that took more than 4.8 million AP exams (College Board, 3 March 2026). AP English Literature is smaller. Say which you have taught, with the enrolment and the qualifying rate, and whether you have completed the College Board summer institute.
A sponsorship you will actually take. The newspaper, the yearbook, speech and debate, the school play, the literary magazine. English teachers are the default staffing pool for most of these, and a named offer breaks ties.
Courses taught: AP English Language and Composition, English 11, English 10, English 9, Journalism I and II, Creative Writing
Certified to teach, not yet taught: AP English Literature, ESOL, Public Speaking
Would sponsor: student newspaper, literary magazine, speech and debate assistant coach
Endorsements: English Language Arts 7-12; ESOL K-12
Separate lines, because they answer different questions: what you have run, what you could be scheduled for tomorrow, and what you would take on beyond the timetable.
Build a snapshot of your key skills
Ten to fourteen entries in three groups: instruction, assessment, and the systems the district runs. Keep the tools you actually use.
Instruction: Writing workshop and conferencing, Portfolio assessment, AP English Language curriculum, Socratic seminar, Scaffolded close reading, Choice reading programmes
Assessment and data: Common rubric design and calibration, Benchmark writing analysis, Reading inventory data, AP score analysis
Publications and electives: Student newspaper advising, Yearbook production, InDesign and Canva
Systems: PowerSchool, Canvas, Google Workspace for Education, Turnitin, AP Classroom
List your education, licence and endorsements
Licence first with its number and expiry, then endorsements, then degrees with graduate hours, then certifications.
Maine Professional Teacher Certificate, English Language Arts 7-12, #ME-0448217, valid through 2029. ESOL K-12 endorsement added 2023.
Master of Arts, English, University of Southern Maine, Portland, ME, 2018. 33 graduate semester hours in English.
Bachelor of Arts, English and Secondary Education, University of Maine, Orono, ME, 2014
Certifications: AP English Language and Composition Summer Institute, College Board (2021, renewed 2025). National Board Certification, Adolescence and Young Adulthood English Language Arts (2024).
If you hold 18 or more graduate semester hours in English, say so. That is the instructor bar most regional accreditors set for dual credit composition, and a teacher who can carry a dual credit section is closing a course the district is funded for differently.
Choose the right layout and design
Single column, plain type at 11 or 12 point, clear headings, no photograph. District applicant systems parse these into a structured record before anyone reads them, and two columns, text boxes and graphics break the parsing.
Put the second endorsement in the header line. Name every course and elective you have taught, separately from those your certificate covers. Give the student load: sections, preps, students. Describe your marking system concretely. Name the activity you would sponsor. Say which AP English course you have taught, with enrolment and qualifying rate.
Do not open with a philosophy of education or a line about loving literature; every file has one. Do not write "various English courses" when the specific list is what gets you scheduled. Do not claim a course you are not endorsed for. Do not send a two-column template into a district portal. Do not submit a file with a typographical error in it.
English teacher job market and outlook
Secondary teaching is a very large occupation with no growth and heavy replacement demand, which makes subject the only variable that matters.
| Measure | High school teachers | Middle school teachers |
|---|---|---|
| Jobs, 2025 | 1,087,500 | 630,100 |
| Projected change, 2025-35 | 0%, -2,500 | 0%, -2,600 |
| Projected annual openings | ~63,500 | ~38,800 |
| Typical entry-level education | Bachelor's degree | Bachelor's degree |
| Median annual wage, May 2025 | $72,040 | $64,370 |
Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2025-35 projections and May 2025 wage data.
The shortage is in three subjects, and English is not one of them
From states' 2024 to 2025 Teacher Shortage Area reports to the U.S. Department of Education, the Learning Policy Institute counted special education reported in shortage by 45 states, science by 41 and mathematics by 40, with at least 425,412 positions nationally unfilled or filled by a teacher not fully certified, roughly 1 in 8 (Learning Policy Institute, 13 July 2026).
One complication sits inside that same data: because language arts is one of the largest subjects taught, the raw number of shortage positions in it is also large. What English lacks is breadth of state-level shortage designation, and breadth is what the incentives follow.
So in maths or science the resume's job is to be unambiguous. In English it is to be the only file in the stack that also solves a second problem.
Where the jobs sit:
| Setting | Share of employment | Median annual wage (May 2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Elementary and secondary schools, local (public) | 81% | $74,190 |
| Elementary and secondary schools, private | 17% | $61,810 |
Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025, high school teachers.
What salary you can expect as an English teacher
The median annual wage for high school teachers was $72,040 as of May 2025, with the lowest 10 percent under $48,780 and the highest above $107,600. Middle school teachers had a median of $64,370, ranging from $48,080 to $102,540 (BLS, May 2025).
Almost all of that spread is the district salary schedule rather than negotiation. Public schools pay a median of $74,190 against $61,810 in private schools.
Where an English teacher moves money is in the stipends layered on the schedule, and here the crowded-subject problem works in your favour. English teachers are the default staffing pool for the newspaper, the yearbook, the literary magazine, the school play and speech and debate, and most of those carry an activity stipend, as do AP and dual credit sections, National Board certification and department chair duties. All are paid against documentation, so listing the certification, the graduate hours and the activity you would sponsor is what makes you eligible when the contract is written rather than a year later.
Key takeaways for an English teacher resume
- Assume the reader has other qualified English candidates, and be the one who solves a second problem.
- Put the second endorsement in the header line.
- Name every course and elective, split into taught, certified, and would sponsor.
- Give the student load: sections, preps, students, and your writing volume.
- Say which AP English course you have taught, with enrolment and qualifying rate.
- State your graduate hours in English if you have 18 or more.
- Proofread it more times than you think you need to.

English teacher resume questions, answered
How long should an English teacher resume be?
One page for your first five years. Two once you have taught AP with results worth citing, built an elective, advised a publication or led a department. Never three.
What makes an English teacher resume stand out?
The second thing you can be scheduled for: a second endorsement, an elective you can build, an AP section with enrolment and qualifying data, and a named activity you would sponsor. English is not a shortage subject, so a file that only demonstrates good English teaching competes against several others doing the same.
Should I list every course I have taught?
Yes, by name, in its own block, kept separate from the courses your certificate covers but you have not yet run. "Various English classes" is invisible to a principal filling two sections of English 10 and one of journalism.
How do I show results in English without a state test score?
Use what your school tracks: district writing benchmark attainment, common rubric scores across a department, AP enrolment and qualifying rates, course failure rates, independent reading volume, publication output, competition results. Give the before, the after and the period.
Is AP English Language or AP English Literature more valuable on a resume?
Both help, and Language is the larger programme: among 2025 graduates it had the largest number of first-time exam takers of any AP course (College Board, 3 March 2026), so more schools staff more sections of it. Name whichever you have taught, give the enrolment and the qualifying rate, and say whether you have completed the College Board summer institute.
Does a master's degree in English help?
It moves you along the district salary lane, and if it carries 18 or more graduate semester hours in English it can make you eligible to teach dual credit composition, which most regional accreditors gate on exactly that number. Put the figure on the page, because very few applicants do.
